COUNTY BOARD ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING MY TERMS IN OFFICE

• Refinanced jail and courthouse bonds for a substantial savings by taking advantage of low- interest rates to reduce long-term debt.

• Held tax-forfeited land sales, which brought in $400,000 for the county and townships as well as putting 40 land parcels

back on the tax role to expand the tax base.

• 911 signs installed to enhance sheriff, ambulance, fire, school bus, garbage and delivery services.

• I serve on the Snake River Watershed Management Board which works with property owners on local lakes and rivers to improve water quality by cost-share grant-funded projects. This brings in money for local contractors • Contract with state to house prisoners, for up to $400,000/year, which helps keep the jail fiscally solvent.

• Appointed Erica Bliss as new Veterans service officer. She has enhanced relationships and services for county veterans.

• I am working with the Timber Trails Transit committee working to incorporate county vans to operate beyond the 10-mile radius,

which is stated in our DOT contract, to serve the entire county.

• Implemented an Economic Development Authority to attract and retain businesses and hired Heidi Steinmetz as director.

Heidi was instrumental in: 1. Kwik Trip entering into a contract with Mora Public Schools to purchase the former Fairview school building.

2. Mick and Mary’s Candy Shoppe opening in downtown Mora 3. Diversified Bronze locating to the Braham Industrial Park (located in Kanabec County).

4. Helped with tax abatement which brought NPP to the former Blue Water Yacht location.

5. Established a business-retention program and is currently working with four additional business prospects interested in

locating to Kanabec County.

• Worked with the hospital board to purchase Mora, Pine City and Hinckley Clinics as well as overseeing a major expansion project to the hospital itself. The expansion added new patient rooms, rehabilitation department, eye clinic, pharmacy and Emergency Services department. FirstLight now has state of the art facilities to house more services and specialists to better serve the community. FirstLight now has over 500 employees.

• Contracted with the U of M Extension for a 4-H coordinator. We then hired a county resident, Laura Ambrose, who has grown the program to include 275 youth and 80 volunteers.

• Created maintenance fund for the Knife Lake Dam.

Early Detection Saves Lives “I went for my mammogram faithfully every year, but I was going to skip it that year,” said Debbie Davis about the year she was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, her doctor convinced her she should go.

Davis went in for her mammogram Sept. 19, 2015, thinking it would be no different than any other year. However, after her mammogram, she was told to go sit in another room. She thought that was strange, but then a nurse told her she could go home.

The following morning at 9 a.m., Davis received a phone call and was asked to come in for an ultrasound. After the ultrasound was completed, she was asked if she had any questions. “Yes, is it cancer?” she asked. The doctor informed her, yes, it was cancer.

The estrogen-based, fast-growing cancer was caught early; Davis was at stage two. “From that point on, Cambridge (Medical Center) was fantastic,” Davis said. “Your head is spinning; all you’re thinking is you’re going to die, I want it gone, and what can you do to save my life.”

A social worker at Cambridge Medical Center assured Davis that the new medical technologies and medicines gave breast cancer patients a better chance at survival long-term. The social worker also took care of scheduling all Davis’ appointments with the oncologist, radiologist and surgeon.

After asking for recommendations from her neighbor, a surgical nurse, Davis’ decided to have her lumpectomy performed by Dr. Kevin Steadland at Mercy Hospital. “He was fantastic,” she said.

Since the cancer had not spread to other parts of her body, there was no need for a mastectomy.

During Davis’ surgery, the surgeon discovered the cancer had spread to one lymph node, which had “burst,” she said. The lymph node and surrounding tissue was also removed along with the tumor. That discovery also led to Davis needing both chemotherapy and radiation, rather than just radiation. She would undergo four months of chemotherapy, and seven weeks of radiation.

“The day after chemo was the worst part of the whole thing,” Davis said, noting she had to take a shot that made her bones produce more white blood cells. “I would hurt for two days.”

Oncologist Dr. Sanda Morar, who is no longer at Cambridge Medical Center, promised Davis she would not get sick on chemotherapy. She prescribed Zofran that Davis took twice per day to help combat nausea.

Although she did not get sick, Davis was extremely tired for days following each treatment. “You’re supposed to drink a lot of water when getting chemotherapy, but it’s hard to drink water when you are sleeping,” Davis said. She noted she was going and receiving IV fluids twice a week, and she was also getting steroids through the IV to combat her drowsiness.

Davis also shared the care one has to take for 48 hours following chemotherapy as the poison leaves one’s body. Family members cannot come into contact with body fluids, which carry it out of the body, or they could get sick from it.

Chemotherapy also made things taste funny. “I love coffee; it’s my favorite,” Davis said. “But chemo made it tastes like tin.”

Candy bars tasted good, and she also developed an addiction to Carmel Nips. Pizza was bad. Chemotherapy also causes one to develop mouth sores.

One of the side effects of chemotherapy is loosing your hair, and this was something that one of her grandsons feared when he was told that his grandmother had cancer. The 6-year-old told his grandmother he did not want to see her without hair, so Davis was always very careful to make sure she had a hat or a wig on when she saw him.

For Christmas that year, Davis was wearing a wig, but it was very hot in the house, and she was sweating a lot. As she was sitting next to him on the floor, her grandson told Davis he liked her “hair.” When Davis turned her head to look at her grandson, her wig spun on her head and her grandson looked at her in horror before exclaiming, “Take it off !” After looking at her without hair for a while, her grandson decided his grandmother’s bald head was not so bad after all.

Before losing her hair, Davis dyed it a shocking bright pink color.

“If it was going to fall out, it was going to be pink – because I was going to win,” Davis said.

Her biggest supporter through cancer was Terry, her husband of 31 years. He helped her to shave her head when her hair did start to fall out. “He waited on me hand and foot, and was my chauffeur,” Davis said.

Life after cancer “It does change your life for a long time,” Davis said of cancer.

This fall is three years after her diagnosis. “Everybody thinks that after chemo and radiation you’re done. That is not the case.”

For the first year, Davis was seeing her oncologist and surgeon every three months; then she would see her surgeon every six

months. She has an appointment with her surgeon Oct. 2, and hopes that will be the last time she will have to see him.

Now that she is in her third year post-diagnosis, Davis will be seeing her oncologist every six months. She has an oncology appointment Oct. 1.

She is also having a bone density test this fall to make sure her bones are not too brittle due to the chemotherapy, and she had a mammogram Sept. 28.

“Every time I go in for a mammogram, I freak out,” Davis noted.

“I have a lot of fears. I try not to let them take over my life, because I am a survivor,” she added.

When Davis was done with her treatments and well on the road to recovery, she and her husband decided to sell their four bedroom house on two acres outside of Cambridge and live a simpler life. After their house sold, they moved to a one-bedroom, one-level home in Mora. They also took off traveling for almost three months going to see Terry’s brothers, staying with one in Arizona for two weeks, another in California for two weeks, and then one in South Dakota for three weeks – taking their time staying in hotels and driving cross country along the way. Last year, they went to Florida to see a fourth brother of Terry’s.

Three months after chemotherapy was over, Davis went on a 5K walk/run to raise money for Cambridge Medical Center’s Harbor Room, which provided her with gift cards for gas and food as she was receiving treatment, as well as provided her with wigs.

Davis also took up crocheting while going through her treatments, and donates hats to the Harbor Room and other hospitals.

She volunteers at Soup for the Soul every Monday, and she and her husband are busy grandparents to their 10 grandchildren.

She was born in Milaca on May 7, 1949 to Ralph and Lillian Unger. She was the first born of 12 children to the couple.

She is survived by daughter, Tara; mother, Lillian Unger; three brothers, six sisters and many nieces and nephews.
