Condo fire likely set by arsonist: police Bridlewood fire on May 4 definitely not accidental or electrical: arson unit BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD

O CANADA!: Attendees at the Kanata Seniors’ Centre’s annual Canada Day celebration take part in a Canada couture fashion show at the Mlacak Centre on Thursday, June 17. More Canada Day coverage inside, from pages 11 to 18.

A fire that destroyed 20 condos in a Bridlewood housing development and forced the evacuation of 108 seniors from a nearby retirement home was likely set by an arsonist, said police. Investigators have eliminated any other possible cause for the fire on Stonehaven Drive on May 4, said Sgt. David Christie, of the Ottawa police arson unit. “You’re looking at a building under construction – it wasn’t energized,” said Christie. It wasn’t an electrical fire and there was no lightning strike, he said. “If you eliminate all those other causes you have to make the assumption the fire was deliberately set,” Christie said. “There’s nothing else going to fit.” A witness interviewed following the fire said they heard three bangs prior to the fire being observed.

“The fire was really intense and it had a rapid growth in a matter of minutes,” said Christie. Investigators have not found any incendiary devices used to start the fire, said Christie. Ottawa police Const. Karen Montague discussed the fire investigation during a meeting of the Bridlewood Community Association at the Eva James Memorial Community Centre on Monday, June 14. TEENS NOT RESPONSIBLE “There’s nothing conclusive when it comes to the fire,” she said. “(Investigators) said it wasn’t careless active teenagers – it wasn’t (caused by) a cigarette. “Definitely they’re looking at an arsonist,” she said. The Ontario fire marshall’s office and the Ottawa police arson unit are still investigating the fire. FIRE, SEE 3

The Ottawa police arson unit says an arsonist likely set the fire that destroyed 20 condo units being built on Stonehaven Drive on May 4.

The fire destroyed the newly constructed homes of 20 people and forced the evacuation of Stonehaven Manor, a neighbouring retirement home. The retirement home residents were evacuated to Broadway Bar and Grill, a nearby restaurant, and an OC Transpo bus, where they were cared for by work-

ers from the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and paramedics. The fire started in an unoccupied eightunit garden home condo complex at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, before spreading to another 10 units still under construction by Urbandale Corp. Homeowners were scheduled to move into the units this month. The fire caused an estimated $3 million

in damage and left one firefighter with a minor injury; a senior who suffered an asthma attack was treated by paramedics. Sixty-four firefighters who arrived on scene in 27 rigs fought the blaze for more than two hours before the fire was under control. The retirement home was not damaged. blair.edwards@metroland.com

NEVER TOO LATE Paul Renaud, a member of the South March Highlands coalition, said it’s not to late to stop the road extension, even though work started in April. “It’s never to late to the right thing,” Renaud said. “The forest will grow back in 50 years.”

If the coalition succeeds in stopping the road, the decision could freeze all housing developments planned for the area, said Renaud. “For years the road has been used to justify development,” he said. The Coalition to Protect the South March Highlands, an arm of the South March Highlands Carp River Conservation Inc., is asking the National Capital Commission to consider making the South March Highlands a conservation area – effectively preventing all residential and commercial development. But the NCC won’t do that, said Wilkinson, who met this week with Marie Lemay, chief executive officer of the NCC. The NCC suggested including the South March Highland in its Greenbelt study, said Wilkinson. If at the end of the two-year study the NCC decides to make the South March Highlands a spoke of the Greenbelt, it would then need to find money to buy the land or do a land swap, said Wilkinson. blair.edwards@metroland.com 379669

other cities, including an injunction stopping work on a $20-million road project in Windsor, Ont. in January. “A lot of people have the impression you can’t fight city hall,” said Gillespie. “But our experience has been slightly different.” The case could affect nearby major housing projects, said Gillespie. “If there is no longer sufficient road capacity that may cause some major rethinking of the viability of the housing projects,” said Gillespie. Urbandale is planning to start work on a housing development on 200 hectares of land close to the Beaver Pond sometime this summer.

“All that’s been done,” said Wilkinson. “The city feels we have a very strong case.” A public meeting discussing changes to the environmental assessment was held last year, said Wilkinson. The city has made significant changes to the original assessment, said Gillespie, including a 1.4-kilometre realignment of Shirley’s Brook. “If you’re going to realign almost a full kilometre of a brook that hasn’t been assessed you need to go back and properly review the impact,” said Gillespie. The city has also approved 200 hectares of new development near the proposed extension and has admitted that original data for water flows to the Carp River were incorrect because of an incorrect hydrological computer model, said Gillespie. “There have also been major floods as recently as last year in the area,” said Gillespie. “All of these appear to be major changes in the environmental setting that require the city

to go back and reexamine the existing work.” The coalition also wants a new assessment to consider the affect of the road on 17 species at risk inhabiting the affected area. “There has never been a comprehensive biological inventory taken or an assessment completed,” said Gillespie. “Until that is done, in the view of many people it’s premature for the project to proceed any further.” Wilkinson said the city has done a thorough job on the project’s environmental assessment. She said the project includes plans to create a man-made wetland to replace one destroyed by construction work, and the road will have fencing and underground culverts allowing the safe passage of wildlife. The road is needed now to serve existing traffic, she added. Kanata only has one main route connecting the north and south – not good enough for a community with almost 100,000 residents, Wilkinson said. Gillespie said his firm has won court orders halting similar large municipal projects in

Invest in our future The Youth Services Bureau announced the creation of a charitable foundation on June 17. They kicked off their campaign with a pledge from 50 local celebrities to gather $50 from 50 more people. The ultimate pay it forward. Despite the obvious reasons to help out our city’s young people, we think it’s going to save our population in the long run. As the executive director of YSB, Alex Munter, said, Ottawa is a very young city and we need to protect that resource. But it also makes sense from a fiscal standpoint. Eventually young people who end up homeless or are in trouble with the law tend to turn into adults who are homeless and in trouble with the law. A study in 2001 by Red Tents — a national campaign to end homelessness — showed that it costs an average of $10,000 more than the costs for a housed person. The daily cost of an average federal prisoner is $259.05 per day or $87,665 per year. Unfortunately, as our young people enter forks in the road of life, they sometimes make the wrong choices — the type of choices that can lead in either of these directions. Unless someone intervenes. The announcement on June 17 coincided with YSB’s 50th anniversary. That’s 50 years helping in 20 locations across Ottawa and serving between 2,500 and 3,000 youth and families monthly. If we donate so they can continue with the work they do, imagine what a difference they will have made for the next generation. They started 50 years ago with just two staff members and a $20,000 grant and grew to help kids all over the city. If the community bands together to offer the new foundation a hand up, that success can only be multiplied.

Too little too late To the editor: Of course I am concerned about this development, and have been for 20 years. But where were all the present concerned citizens when the initial Beaver Pond was developed? More specifically, where has Marianne Wilkinson been for the past 20 years? I certainly don’t remember her supporting us when this piece of precious land was first put up for development. We have painfully had to watch the surrounding land reduced to a bombsite, every living thing removed, and then houses built on top of the rubble. But at the last minute, this issue suddenly becomes vocal. Too little, too late I say. There seems to be no way we citizens can halt the march of progress (no pun intended.) Permanent fix takes time

Decision disappointing

To the editor: re: Action required for flooding fixes, letter, June 10, Kourier-Standard. While Aaron Helleman is right to express concern about how long it is taking to get solutions in place, there are a few points in his letter to the editor that need to be clarified. Replacement of manhole covers to reduce the threat of stormwater going into the sanitary sewer system is starting this summer. The time it took the investigation to identify the causes of the flooding reflected the fact that, after three serious floods, every possible factor needed to be looked into. The investigations into flooding problems in Sandy Hill and Orleans, which also had histories of flooding problems, took similar amounts of time. Even people whose homes weren’t flooded, but saw the devastation caused by last July’s flooding get nervous whenever heavy rain is forecast. For people whose homes have been flooded it is many times worse.

Editor in Chief Deb Bodine deb.bodine@metroland.com 613-221-6210 Managing Editor Suzanne Landis suzanne.landis@metroland.com 613-221-6226 Associate Editor: Blair Edwards blair.edwards@metroland.com 613-221-6238 Reporter Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com 613-221-6239 Flyer Sales Bob Burgess bob.burgess@metroland.com 613.221.6227

But after three floods in 14 years, we need to make sure the investigation takes the time to look into every possible cause so we do not have a fourth flood. While it is not related to Aaron’s letter, people should also be aware that additional funding will be provided to the protective plumbing program to ensure people wanting to install backflow valves can do so and not be kept waiting for reimbursement. Because of the high number of applications, people were being told that funding for this year had been exhausted. Council recognized that, with the flooding that has taken place, people should not be forced to wait and voted to provide additional funding. To the editor: I read with interest that the transit advisory committee voted unanimously to take a position against proceeding with the Lansdowne plan, “unless a proper solution to the transportation problems can be found.” Needless to say, disappointment reigned supreme reading the comments from the vice-chair of that committee. Sunday evening I tuned in to the Much Music Awards which was held in downtown Toronto, outside, in the middle of intersecting streets. The crowds were alive and the life emitted was inspiring — inspiring to think that this type of event could one day take place in downtown Ottawa.

Thieves steal gift from late husband To the editor: I’d like the thank the “upstanding citizens” who stole my solar lights. I put them in my front yard for myself and the neighbourhood to enjoy every evening.

But I guess they were too pretty for the thieves to resist. If you could please return them, as they were a gift from my late husband, placed in the rock garden he built, and I enjoyed looking

Did you know that working smoke alarms can cut your chances of dying in a fire by 50 per cent? In Ontario, having working smoke alarms is not only a good idea -- it’s the law. Ottawa Fire Services recommends you install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside your sleeping areas. Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks. A working smoke alarm and a home fire escape plan will significantly increase your chances of surviving a fire.

DISAPPOINTING, FROM 6

The audience for this particular show had to get to the venue somehow and they would have to leave most likely in the same manner. How is it that Toronto can pull this off and Ottawa is terrified of even trying? Hasn’t anyone opposed to the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park ever been to Toronto or Montreal? The downtown core in these cities is buzzing with sounds, sights, music, restaurants, bars, studios, art galleries, parks, theaters and shops but to name a few places to see and be seen. What is it that prevents the decision-makers from coming up with a viable solution to anticipated problems not yet realized? Granted, it is most likely the local residents who will be against whatever solution is proposed but Lansdowne Park is for everyone in the City of Ottawa to enjoy and our elected representatives might do well to consider this when casting their vote for or against. Keeping that in mind, the decision to move forward with this redevelopment should not be halted but used as a stepping stone to building a truly awesome venue that puts Ottawa on the map as the “go-to” city. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson says she is trying to find a way to save parts or all of the Beaver Pond lands slated for development. In a meeting with the National Capital Commission (NCC) on June 14, Wilkinson discussed having the Beaver Pond named as part of the Greenbelt. “My meeting with NCC CEO Marie LeMay on June 14 was helpful in developing a partnership with the NCC to have the South March Highlands considered as an extension of the Greenbelt,” said Wilkinson in an email. The NCC is conducting studies to update the original master plan of the Greenbelt, which will not be concluded for two years, said Wilkinson. The NCC is looking into including the Beaver Pond lands in the study but no decision has been made to date. “I’ve asked to have another meeting with them,” she said. “I want to talk to the exact people who are working on that study.” If the NCC decides to name the Beaver Pond lands as part of the Greenbelt, Urbandale would receive compensation for the loss of developable land.

“If they decide they (the NCC) want to have it they only get the land if they buy it,” said Wilkinson. “They don’t have that kind of money.” As an alternative to lengthy delays due to the land study and lack of available money, Wilkinson is looking into the availability of city-owned land to trade with the developer. “I am seeking ways of delaying the proposed development,” she said, “Looking for a land exchange with city lands to obtain at least part of these lands in the interim. We have some lands that might be able to be used.” Wilkinson brought a motion before council on Tuesday, June 22 to have the Tree Preservation Plan, which is to be completed by the developers, be submitted to the planning and environment committee for consideration and direction before it is approved by city staff. This way, the community will get the chance to review the plan as well, said Wilkinson. “I will be continuing to meet with officials and search for additional solutions so that the endangered species are protected and the lands continue to be available for the public,” she said. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

After coming out to his parents and ending up in 17 foster homes in two years, 20-year-old Johnny said the Youth Services Bureau saved him. “I ended up addicted to drugs and alcohol because that was the only way I knew how to deal with everything,” he said. “But thanks to the YSB I have been clean for three years.” Since then, Johnny was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, but has found a way to deal with it and with the help of a YSB counsellor, make positive choices for his future. Johnny’s story was one of the happy endings showcased at the launch of a new YSB charitable foundation at McEwen Park near Richmond Road. Supporters from local industry and government gathered at the launch on June 17. They banded together to ask the community to donate and help expand the services that serve 2,500 to 3,000 of the city’s youth each year. Donated money will go to improving services at the agency’s 20 locations — including the 60-

year-old drop-in centre downtown. It will also fund employment programs and reduce wait times for times for services. The kick start the campaign, a group of 50 local celebrities, including Mayor Larry O’Brien, have committed to finding 50 people to donate $50. The foundation has already reached $102,000 of their goal to get $750,000 for 2010-2011. The bureau’s services often are the turning point for young people who are forced to make tough choices. Johnny heard about the long-term affordable housing offered by YSB in 2007. He was offered a space four minutes after he applied and has been living in one of the units on McEwen Avenue ever since. He will be going to La Cité Collégiale’s social work in the fall to give back to the community that helped him. Alex Munter, the YSB’s executive director for three years, said the bureau helps youth to put their lives back on track. “Ottawa is a very young city,” he said. “These young people are our future and we need to invest in that resource.” jennifer.mcintosh@ metroland.com

Overworked and under-trained Personal Support Workers struggle to provide the best care

As front-line workers in the overburdened long-term care system, PSWs are the first to see its problems. Given the chaos they experience every day, they want better training standards and other professional improvements that the province, so far, is rejecting.

SECOND IN A FOUR-PART SERIES

By Jillian Follert

W

hen the woman’s head hit the wall with a dull thud, Cathy’s blood ran cold. “I was just thinking, ‘oh my God, oh my God, what if I killed her?’” The 26-year-old was four months into her first job as a personal support worker at a Toronto long-term care home, when she left a frail, wisp of a 90-year-old Alzheimer’s patient with a bump on the head, after struggling to transfer her 100pound body from wheelchair to bed. “It’s partly my fault, because I probably should have asked for help,” Cathy said, crying as she remembers that day in 2008, and the nurse who called her an idiot. “But, I also think it’s not really my fault, because my school never taught me how to do transfers properly.” Cathy isn’t her real name. As was the case with most of the 30 PSWs interviewed for Situation Critical, Cathy agreed to tell her story, on condition that her name and the home she works at not be identified. She worries about being fired or blacklisted for speaking on situations that jeopardize care. PSWs are the most intimate point of contact for 75,000 elderly Ontarians living in government-supported nursing homes, helping with everything from feeding to toileting. The approximately 100,000 PSWs employed in various eldercare capacities in Ontario — about 30,000 work in nursing homes — toil at the bottom of the health care food chain, whether they work in long-term care facilities or at an individual’s home. They are in a struggle for legitimacy that has become more public as PSWs push the province harder for higher standards and concrete training requirements. It’s a losing battle. Health Minister Deb Matthews recently scrapped a round of public consultation on potential regulation of PSWs. She told Metroland she is “very much concerned” about PSW qualifications and the fact that training courses differ dramatically in length and content. “What I think is important, is there is a clear understanding of what training is required to call yourself a PSW,” Matthews said. “My understanding is that it varies tremendously.”

PSWs are the heartbeat of Ontario’s 625 nursing homes, responsible for up to 75 per cent of care. They bathe and dress residents, comb their hair and brush their teeth. They lift them in and out of beds and wheelchairs, and help those who can still use the toilet. They change diapers, spoon feed residents and reposition them to prevent bed sores. Increasingly, PSWs also tackle medically related tasks delegated by other overworked health professionals, including changing nitroglycerine patches and navigating chest drainage, feeding tubes and oxygen therapy. PSWs who spoke to Metroland said ratios can be as low as three or four PSWs to 50 or 60 residents. “You’re literally jogging from room to room, you have no time to talk to the residents and spend time with them,” said April Hill, from the Orillia area, a PSW for about three years. “It’s just go, go, go. Get them out of bed, put them back in bed. Feed them, wash them, dress them. Move on to the next one.” PSW advocates say it would be easier to navigate the growing challenges if PSWs were all well-trained and had a professional organization to lean on. “We are in desperate need of regulation and standards, if you get a PSW in there who isn’t properly trained you put the public at risk. People get hurt,” said Miranda Ferrier, president of PSW Canada, an advocacy group. “PSWs become an extension of their residents, they’re their hands and their eyes. They do everything they can’t do for themselves, and that takes the right training.” For many families with loved ones in care, PSWs are indispensable. Kathy Paterson of the Oshawa area, whose 86year-old mother was in long-term care before she died this spring, appreciated the PSW assigned to care for her. Paterson said the PSW who dressed her mother each day, helped her eat and noticed even the smallest medical changes, was a life raft in a chaotic system. “She treated my mother with such care, it was like they were family,” she said. Just like the families who feel grateful to those who care for their loved ones, many PSWs become attached to those they serve. Luc Carriere, who works at the Carleton Lodge long term care facility, which opened its doors in 1960, wants to maintain a standard of care for seniors in the province. He believes this can be accomplished with a standardized number of hours alloted each day to individual residents. Alberta is currently the only province with a standard where patients get 3.5 hours of personal care per day. PSWs are also traditionally given low

pay rates, with a national average of $14.34 per hour, according to a Canadian Union of Public Employees study. “I love my job, but there just aren’t enough hands to give residents the care that they need,” Carriere said. Carriere is in charge of the centres day activities, which will often mean organizing outings or happy hour. For him, every day is different, but a lack of resources and staff can sometimes mean he is filling in when needed in other areas of care. Wendy McCarl, graduate of the PSW program at Algonquin College has a different set of priorities on her wish list. McCarl’s intention on taking the program was to work with young people with developmental disabilities, but after doing a stint with Help the Aged, a local charity dedicated to the health and well being of the country’s seniors, she was hooked. Now McCarl works to support elderly men at the Ottawa Mission. Whether it is to help provide access to health care or to locate a spot in a long-term care facility or assisted living complex, she helps her clients when they need it the most. “If I could ask for anything, it would be safe housing where they can be comfortable and safe,” she said. “Some men I work with don’t need that much, just someone to visit them or help with their banking, but every little bit helps.” McCarl said it can be difficult to place her homeless seniors in the right facility due to lack of documents, a murky picture of their health concerns and the attitude that there isn’t a better life out there to be had. “A lot of them just accept not feeling well or not having enough food,” she said. “Sometimes it can be tough to convince them that there is another way.” McCarl’s job isn’t the day-to-day physical care of seniors’ needs. She doesn’t bathe them, she doesn’t have to feed them and she wouldn’t know how to treat their physical ailments. That doesn’t make her work any less

important. The work she does makes sure they end up in the types of facilities that will care for their physical and mental well being, so despite the crushing paperwork and long wait times, she feels satisfied in her career. Carriere said she feels the same way. “Sometimes it can be depressing, but you can make just that one resident smile and it is all worth it,” he said. But, concern that PSWs are not regulated or certified, coupled with media reports of infractions — a North Bay PSW, for example, was sentenced to house arrest this year for stealing an elderly resident’s credit card — have led to calls for the profession to go through an accountability overhaul. For the organizations working on behalf of PSWs, that means an Ontariowide PSW registry, uniform curriculum and clear-cut standards of practice. In the chaotic life of a PSW, time, wages, resources, training, support and respect are often in short supply. Without education standards, some new hires end up at a loss when they’re thrust into reallife situations — jeopardizing the care of fragile residents they oversee. “ ... when I got out there working, then I realized there’s some things I don’t know,” said Jen, who has been on the job for a year and completed a six-month adult education course offered through a school board. “We didn’t spend much time on the proper terminology for certain illnesses or anything that can go wrong with the body. Even the CPR first aid course, I find myself having to go back and reread my book over again. Because I find myself in some situations where it’s like, ‘oh my God, it went too fast and now I don’t remember what to do in this situation.’” With files from Jennifer McIntosh

Canada Day in Kanata here to stay

13

Canada Day in Kanata is here to stay, at least for another year. Event organizers were unsure if this year would be the last celebration due to a lack of funding. But sponsorship has picked up, meaning the show will go on. “The gentleman working on our sponsorships did an outstanding job,” said Michele Green, chair of Canada Day in Kanata. “With the sponsorships that we got we’re going in with a balanced budget. It worked out quite well.” The organizers typically go into the event looking to make up the needed cash on the midway, but this year they are ahead, said Green.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY There will be entertainment aimed towards all ages at the celebration. Headliners David Usher and Crash Parallel will be rocking out on the main stage, gearing up towards the fireworks. “We’re mostly looking forward to playing a festival-type show again,” said lead vocalist of Crash Parallel Tim Edwards. “And celebrating Canada Day with a bunch of people we’ve never celebrated with before will be exciting too.” Inflatable bouncers, puppet shows, a

tug-of-war competition, free yoga classes, a Zumba demonstration and a number of musical acts are among many of the activities available during the Canada Day celebration. “We love playing outdoor festivals,” said Lucas Haneman of the local musical group The Elyssa Mahoney and Lucas Haneman Band. “It’s going to be great to play for a big crowd of people, we always like doing that. And it’s mainly about that; people are there with their families, people are there with their significant others; it’s nice to play for a community.” CANADA DAY, SEE 14

VOLUNTEER SHORTAGE The Canada Day in Kanata celebration could not take place without the assistance of the many volunteers who give up their time to ensure the event is a success. This year, however, staffing is still a little short. “We’re a little shy on volunteers,” said Michele Green, chair of the event. “We only hit about 25 or 30 and that’s about half of what we need.” Volunteers are needed to man the new greening initiatives, the family fun zone, the set up and tear down of the structures. “We figure we need between 70 and 90 people,” said Green, who is offering a $500 honourarium to a community group of 10 or more that commits to help clean the area the day after. For those interested in volunteering, email Green at volunteers@canadadayinkanata.com. For more information on Canada Day in Kanata, visit www.canadadayinkanata.com. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

BLAIR EDWARDS KOURIER-STANDARD Rippers and posers alike will converge on Walter Baker Park for the third annual 8-Hour Skate, a charity skateboarding event on Saturday, June 26. Organizers expect close to 100 boarders between the ages of six to 46 to compete in the charity skateboarding event with all money raised going to KidSport, a charity that helps children participate in Ottawa sports programs. “Last year we had participants younger than six,” said event organizer Rich Bryan. The event will include lessons and skateboarding competitions. Bryan said he hopes the event will raise the profile of the sport within Ottawa. Bryan and Eric Dion co-founded the 8-Hour Skate in 2008, running the first two boarding festivals in downtown Ottawa. “We just felt there wasn’t an event out there that was servicing the community,” said Bryan. This year it was time to move the SUBMITTED PHOTO event into the city’s west end, said Kanata’s Walter Baker Park will host the third annual 8-Hour Skate, a charity Bryan. skateboarding event on Saturday, June 26. Kanata Food Cupboard 25 Years of Helping Hands in Kanata The Kanata Food Cupboard is always in need of volunteers for regular duties and special events. We often have no difficulty recruiting student volunteers, but our special events frequently involve activities that call for supervision of younger students by mature adults and we sometimes find ourselves short of these sorts of volunteers. For example, we need about 20 volunteers for the Bushtukah Canada Day Road Races in Kanata on July 1 from 6:30 a.m. until about 11:00 a.m. If you would be able to help out at this or any of our other special or regular events, please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@kanatafoodcupboard.ca, or by telephone at (613) 836-7847, line 3. 396993

The Canada Day show will feature songs from Wonder Away, in an intimate and interactive format aimed at audience participation and particularly at getting children involved in the performance. With the release of Wonder Away this summer, 2010 is truly a breakthrough year for the band. It is the genesis of over a year’s work and a lifetime of experience. Wonder Away captures the pure essence of Rothwell and Moffatt’s expansive range of style and melody which can be compared to artists such as The Dixie Chicks and Lady An-

tebellum. Originally conceived as a children’s album, Wonder Away evolved into a collection of songs that crosses-generations and resonates with children and adults alike. It is an album that can be enjoyed as a family and will inspire thought, reflection and imagination. From the opening chords of the title track to the campfire, end of summer vibe of Linger, Wonder Away will hopefully transport you back to your own endless summer. Rothwell and Moffatt perform at 3:30 p.m. in the Family Fun Zone, on the Gazebo Stage. For more information visit www.rothwellandmoffatt.com.

A dragon boat mixed-team competes during a race over the weekend of June 19 at Mooney’s Bay Park. This year 186 teams turned out.

‘It’s total co-ordinated mayhem’ Dragon boat festival sees 186 teams compete in races The Exclusive Oars missed the boat to qualify for Sunday’s race during the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival by only 2.5 seconds. “Overall we came in 96th place out of 186 teams in the Saturday races with a best time of 2:26.03,” said Bob Einarsson, captain of the mixed-gender team. “The actual race; it’s a huge rush, ev-

erybody’s cranking away as hard as they can go. It’s total mayhem but it’s total coordinated mayhem.” The Dragon Boat Festival took place at Mooney’s Bay Park on June 19 and 20. Although they didn’t make their goal of advancing, Einarsson said they still had a lot of fun. “We all had a great time at the festival,” he said. “The races were very well run this year, no major accidents.” The Exclusive Oars had solid times dur-

ing their preliminary and final races but didn’t make it into the top 75 to qualify for the second day’s races. “Our first race went pretty well, but we had a bit of trouble hearing the starting instructions, as we were the farthest boat away from the starter. So we did not get as good a start as we would have liked. We came in third place out of eight boats in our first race,” said Einarsson.

Ages 5 - 18 (Students must be 5 at the time of the camp date - no exceptions) Price $199.00 plus tax = $224.87 Registration begins immediately in the office. Space is limited to 30 students per week. 215 Terence Matthews Cres., Bridlewood, Kanata

She is now in remission but continues to fight the disease with her comrades on the dragon boat team Busting Out. Griffioen said that the concept of breast cancer survivors entering into dragon boat races was developed by Dr. Don McKenzie — a sports medicine physician at the

University of British Columbia, who worked to dispel the myth that repetitive upper-body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema. The first team, Abreast in a Boat in 1996, showed that by following a special exercise and training program, women could avoid lymphedema and enjoy active, full lives. Now, Griffioen, an administrator at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School in Kanata, said she draws a tremendous amount of support from

her teammates. “We all have different stories — different treatments, different degrees of the disease —but I am a better person for having the chance to have met them,” she said. The Dragon Boat Festival in Ottawa began to raise funds for the foundation — which funnels pledges to local charities every year in 1988. Griffioen said her team has competed in races internationally, travelling to Australia and Vancouver

to compete. The training starts in early spring with trips to a two-day sports workshop in Chelsea, Que. “It’s a sport and there are always new techniques to learn and better ways to do things,” Griffioen said. Also the team met every Tuesday and Thursday before the races on June 19 and 20. Their boat has a permanent home at Rideau Canoe Club on Mooney’s Bay. So twice a week the girls would warm up, go out on the water and then cool

The Exclusive Oars after their second race at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. DRAGON BOAT, FROM 23

“Our second race went much better, with a good solid start and a really good finish. We came in second place out of eight boats.” Einarsson, who has been captain for five seasons out of the eight the boat has been competing, said his team is “semi-competitive – we like to have fun and do as well as we can.” This year, the Exclusive Oars only had 23 paddlers; 22 are needed to fill a boat. “You get to be a close-knit group when you’re paddling and practicing,” said Einarsson. “It’s nice; it’s a team-oriented thing.”

Einarsson, whose team used to be corporately sponsored by Nortel, said they used a play-on-words to come up with their name. “We’re originally a technology team,” said Einarsson, who lives in Glen Cairn. “In computer programming you have logical ors and you also have exclusive ors.” His team raised a total of $1,615 for local charities. “I offer a prize to the top fundraiser on the team to encourage people to do better,” said Einarsson. DRAGGIN’ DOCS TOPS IN FUNDRAISING The Draggin’ Docs came in second in the

down and socialize with drinks and a bite to eat. “It’s really a good time, I wasn’t sure at first,” Griffioen said. Griffioen joined the team at the urging of her daughter seven years ago and never looked back. “I always thought I had enough support from my friends and family, but the team has offered me a camaraderie that I never expected,” she said. jennifer.mcintosh@ metroland.com.

Challenge Cup Fundraising with a total of over $32,400 raised for local charities. Gail White, who lives in Kanata and has been captain for two years out of the three her boat has been competing, has a team of 24 women – and they are very competitive, she said. Each year the Draggin’ Docs finish among the top fundraising teams, which White said is one of their main focuses aside from the competition. “The fundraising is a huge part,” said White, who added their motto is “The fun the fashion the friendship and the fundraising.” Dressed like Wonder Woman, the Draggin’ Docs came in sixth place during the women’s B final on Sunday, with a time of 3:37.66. The team also won the Best Site award. “We had a fabulous weekend,” said White. “As always, a great time was had by all.” On Saturday, the Draggin’ Docs finished 15th among the female teams and were 108 overall with a time of 2:27.34. White’s team is made up of female doctors from all areas of the medical field, including family doctors, psychiatrists, sports medicine physicians and obstetricians. “We were two separate journal clubs and we were thinking that it would be good to come together for a fun activity independent of our work,” said White. The Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival began in 1993 and is North America’s largest festival of its kind. jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Peggy Feltmate Kanata South Lansdowne Park plan missing key details. Both supporters and opponents of the Lansdowne Partnership Plan should be concerned about the fact that the plan before council is incomplete. One of the concerns about Lansdowne Live is how traffic will be handled. The Transportation Assessment and Impact Study looked at how much traffic the site would generate, what the parking requirements would be and what measures would be required to make the proposal work. Assumptions used for transportation assessment and impact study raise questions. If the consultants doing the Transportation Assessment and Impact Study had used the rates for vehicle traffic from the different uses at Lansdowne, developed by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, their conclusion about the increase in traffic the development will generate would have been very different. 613-580-2752

Capital soccer club headed to South Africa KATIE MULLIGAN KOURIER-STANDARD Ottawa’s passion for soccer is going international, thanks to a local club. The eight-member men’s soccer team of the Capital United Men’s Soccer Club are headed to South Africa at the end of June after winning their way to the top. The team kicked off their winning streak by coming out on top at the regional level. They qualified for the nationals in Toronto, where they competed against five teams for the chance to head to South Africa for the Budweiser Global Beer Champions. After beating Montreal in the semifinals 2-1, the men went head-to-head against Toronto. They tied 0-0, but Ottawa won in the penalty shots. “It was a tough game,” said goalkeeper Mark Krocko of Ashton. Krocko, along with team mates Kyle Washington and Wade Washington, both originally from Carp, Ahmad Berjawi, Abdullahi Abunefeesa, Shawn Ord, Pat Zanetti and Joel Musambi, is headed to Johannesburg, South Africa at the end of June to compete against other countries at one of the FIFA stadiums. Krocko, who is a goalkeeping coach in West Carleton, was recognized as Keeper of the Game at the national level and was awarded an official soccer ball during the dinner gala to commemorate the award. He said about 16 countries are expected

to compete in Johannesburg on July 1. “Since Canada didn’t make the World Cup, we can show Canada’s ever-improving passion for soccer,” said Krocko. “It’s getting bigger and bigger, especially in (Ottawa).” Krocko, who graduated from Notre

Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, began his journey with Carleton Place Soccer around the age of 10. He joined the league to stay active during the summer during the off-season from hockey. He eventually chose soccer as his pri-

mary sport, dropped hockey and joined the Capital United club at the age of 15. “This is really exciting,” said Krocko’s mother Eva of the trip. “But he seems so calm, cool and collected.” SOCCER, SEE 35

Kyle Washington grew up in Carp and runs a west-end business, Washington Total Soccer, which is self-described as a skill development company dedicated to teaching young soccer players to enjoy the game. “I am so on top of the world, said player Kyle. “It’s so unbelievable, it’s barely setting in. Kyle said he knows they are going and he has his itinerary ready togo, but he’s still having trouble imagining what it will be like at the World Cup, playing at one of the FIFA stadiums. “Nothing in my experience can get me ready for what it will be like when we get there, he said. “It’s unreal. Kyle has been part of the Capital United since he was 16.

He said the group going to Johannesburg is close-knit, which makes the experience even more exciting. “This is going to be the trip of a lifetime, he said. The Capital United Men’s Soccer Club is the top amateur league in Ottawa. The home field as located in the east end of the city. They play one to two games per week, and train up to five times per week. Many members of the team have been playing together for more than 10 years. The team has enjoyed an undefeated season so far. “We always finish in the top seeds, said Krocko. The 6v6 Budweiser Cup is an international amateur event which features soccer teams from around the world at the same time as the World Cup. katie.mulligan@metroland.com
