Content Editorial Who we are New volunteer in Kalamata About a previous volunteer Punk Interview with volunteer Sport Lisboa e Benfica Catania Party in The Netherlands Recipe Let’s do it What’s new What’s coming soon

Editorial I am at the Youth Centre of Kalamata after really long time and I realise how much I miss this place. Lately I am rarely in Kalamata due to professional obligations and the first thing I miss after family is the Youth Centre. In the first floor people are dancing, in the second children are playing and in between an English school is taking an interview by an EVS volunteer. Few minutes in this place makes you feel great. Multilingualism, multiculturalism, happy people and beautiful faces! Being member of this experiment since the beginning I can see the impact it has in our community and I can recall hundreds of brilliant examples of youth whose life changed through the Youth Centre of Kalamata. Feeling refreshed I can only wish this initiative to grow more and survive the challenges it faces everyday. Especially now that youth living in Greece, are going through the worst social and economic crisis of the last 50 years. Feel free to join the Youth Centre of Kalamata and be part of this unique experience!!!

About a previous volunteer Hello! I am writing about Ines today. She was volunteer here for Farma Foifa and we worked together during 7 months. (I hate using past tense for her.) She left last week and she is in Crete now. But she is going back to her real life in Austria. She was my best friend in Kalamata and we shared a lot of things. Although it has been just –not even- 1 week, I miss her a lot and I wanted to tell this to everybody through our lovely LINK magazine. I am sure I will not be the only person who will miss her but it is more difficult for me. It is missing the best friend, it is missing one of the most important people in my EVS life and it is missing a “secret friend.”

With the little details at farm, I remember her every day and I always want to say her that I miss her. But I know, it will make her upset and I just want her enjoy her time in Crete. I will tell very single emotional details when she goes back to Austria. And probably she will also read this article after she arrives to Austria.

So, my dear Ines, you are and amazing person and I am so lucky that I had a chance to meet you and to work with you during these 7 long, difficult months. Thank you for being always there to support me and to let me have a person to trust till the end. Although we have different life styles, I know that our mind is working the same. ;) And I know that you miss me. And we will see each other during our long miserable live. :P Until the first meeting, take care of yourself! See you!

Punk! Let’s talk about PUNK! Not everybody have already heard about Panx Romana so im obliged to say few words for this amazing greek based band who their songs and their ethics has influenced lots of people (including me). At the early 80s the band consisted by three persons, the vocals, the base and guitar. After a while the fourth member, a drummer, has joined the group. At the beginning they were giving performances in schools and several bars/clubs. They were also participating in Punk-festivals in Athens and Thessaloniki where they have had the opportunity to cooperate with other punk bands such as “Stress” and the “Ex-humans”.

Their songs talk mostly about love and respect for our fellowmans, their disagreement to mandatory conscription and against all of the kind of drugs including the alcohol. In 1987, their first album named “Παιδία στα Όπλα (Pedia sta Opla, Armed Children)” was released. After two years, they have recorded their second album called “Αντάρτες Πόλεων (Antartes Poleon/ City Rebels”. Subsequently their albums “Σπάσε την Γραμμή (Spase tin Grammi/Brake the Line)” ,the “Διαγωγή Κοσμία (Diagogi Kosmia)” and the “Κράτος Κλειστόν (Kratos Kliston/The Closed State)” were released in 1993,1996,1999 accordingly. After their last album the members of the band, took separated paths. Fortunately, five years later they have gave some new performances and soon we are waiting, the release of their new album, which is expected to be great!

Interview with volunteer Hi Tania, tell me something about you. I’m Tania and I come from Sicily, Italy. The town name where I come from is Palagonia, near Katane in the oriental part of Sicily. I’m almost 29 and I’m here to do a new experience in a foreign country. What are your hobbies? I like to travel and know new places. I like also DIY, to take photos and cook for friends and my family. How long are you here, in Kalamata? I’m here for just 10 days now, but so far I like it: I like having the beach so close and I’ve seen some nice places also. Where you should do the volunteer here in Kalamata? I should volunteering in the tourist office of Kalamata.

Before coming here, what did you do? Last summer I participated to Leonardo project that allowed me to do an internship in an hotel in Krakow. As soon as I came back home, I decided to study a new language: Russian. Right now I had to give up with that because of EVS, but I can replace Russian with Greek. What will you do once you come back to your country? I will get the certification in order to be able to teach Italian language to foreigners and maybe this way will lead me to a period in the USA. Finger crossed.

Catania

Catania (in Greek Κατάνη) is the second-largest city in Sicily and one the fifteen metropolitan cities in Italy. So, why a tourist should choose to visit Catania? Catania one of the few cities of the world interesting under the point of view of culture and history, amazing naturalistic landscapes, unique in the world, folklore, seaside and nightlife. Catania history is strongly linked with the Mount Etna story as the city was destroyed several times by lava flow, the most important in 1669, but as phoenix it obtain a new life from its ashes. In fact, the city was completely rebuilt in 1669 and the historical centre has an early neoclassical asset, but with the influence of a late baroque style. The main material used were marble and lava stone, so the city centre has the contraposition of black and white of these two stones. The city centre has also two main gardens: Villa Pacini and Villa Bellini. Underneath the city run a river: the Amenano. It is possible to see it flowing in the Amenano fountain, in Dome square.

In this square it is possible to see also the Dome the elephant fountain. This two elements represent the religious and the profane power in order to block other lava flows in the city. The elephant is also the symbol of the city. From here it is possible to continue on Via Etnea, one of the main streets, where it is possible to see “a Muntagna” as Catania people call it in a respectful way inflecting the name in feminine, the Mount Etna. In Stesicoro square there are the traces of the several flows Catania suffered during his history, as underneath there is the Roman amphitheatre. Other remarkable places to visit are Vincenzo Bellini Theatre, really amazing inside, the Benedictine Monastery of “San Nicolò” where is possible to have a guided tour, the Greek theatre that has free entrance and Ursino castle where at the moment there is a Picasso exposition. These are just a few things you can visit.

For those who love nature Mount Etna is the perfect solution to make an excursion. many legends are connected with Etna. When Mount Etna erupts it’s a real show.

As regard the folkore, a very important moment is the Festival of Saint Agatha, that is the most important religious festival. It commemorates the life and martyrdom of what is the city’s patron saint. It takes place annually from 3 to 5 February, but weeks before it is possible to see along the street processions following “Candelore”. Candelore are made of wood and they are a devotion sign of the people to the Saint. In Catania they represent also the most common jobs and they are twelve. Some of them are ancient and made in the baroque style and contain a big candle inside.

In the end, we have the last to aspects of the city: the seaside and nightlife. There are both rocky and sandy beaches: the first in Ognina whilst the latter at the Playa. Whereas the nightlife develops above all around the Main Theatre Square where there are several clubs and pubs. So, what would you like to choose among all these aspects?

Party in The Netherlands I would like to tell you something about the party days in my country. Because also the Dutch people know how to party. Everything starts with the celebration of our beloved king and queen, Willem and Maxima. That Willem is a big party example for us Dutchies explains his nickname: Prince pils. (Prince beer). We celebrate his birthday on the 27th of April, Kingsday. Everyone is dressed in orange, our national colour. And of course most of the people don’t make it to the night because if it is for one day allowed to drink beer on the streets, everyone will abuse this speciality :) If you survive this day, the next party is already coming, the 5th of may. This day our country celebrates the liberation from the second world war. During this day, alover the country festivals arise and where the rain normally is falling everybody is happy and think about the fact that our freedom is not a simple thing. And of course, we are a happy nation so we like to party for no reason. Enough reasons to find good parties in The Netherlands!. Your Dutch, Daan Roorda
