VOLUNTEERS Hello! I am Annalisa, I come from the wonderful city of Bologna (Northern Italy). I have an academic background in International Relations (European Affairs) and look forward to become a project developer in international cooperation, tackling social issues through the participation of civil society. I am spending a year in Kalamata, volunteering at the K.A.NE’s office, helping out with the design and management of youth mobility and social projects.

So, I ended up here in Kalamata where I’m going to work with video. I also have a big interest in performance art and cinema and in my work I always mix these different backgrounds and interests. I’m only going to stay for two months, but I’m really excited to get to know the Peloponnese and to enjoy this beautiful city by the sea.

I studied psychology, although now I don’t have in mind to dedicate myself to it. Honestly, now what I want is to know new places and live new adventures. ANNALISA I think it’s an enormous topic for humans, I’ve never heard of a culture that hasn’t built a system of beliefs around it. From personal experience, I think that death is more about the people who have to live on and experience real loss than about those who die.

MAGDALENA What should I think about it? It’s a part of life cycle but people managed to create thousands of ways to make life end unnaturally.

TAMARA I think that’s a natural thing, it always was and always will be.

I would love for reincarnation to exist and to be reincarnated into a bird or a fish, but unfortunately I think we die and that's it.

For me personally - death can happen during your lifetime. Death - is not a desire to live. Death - is absence of motivation. Death - this is degradation. Death - this is putting life off for later (procrastination). Death - is an integral part of life (as there is day and there is night).

DEFINITION OF FEAR

program by nature itself and by God, so that man does not die before HIS TIME. The house of fear is us and our head. So let's knock to our neighbor's door - and say "HELLO I CAME TO YOU IN PEACE". We must accept fear in our lives as something normal. It is normal to be afraid. But there is one BUT.

We live in a wonderful time. We can read and find all the information about fears, death, eternal life, reincarnation and so on on Wikipedia and the Internet. But as 1000 years ago and still now - the main factor in human development and evolution is FEAR and FEAR OF DEATH.

WE HAVE TWO CHOICES Why? You ask. It is because if a mammoth attacked a person, or a tiger wanted to eat an ancient human being- fear forced them to get fire, build a house, learn to hunt, develop your physical shape and learn to cook (in order to not to die of starvation). Fear forced people to unite - to create villages, cities, countries. It is because of fear, we know that once upon a time Sparta, Byzantium, Kievan Rus etc. existed.

By the way, the majestic history of Kievan Rus developed due to the fact that people were afraid of enemy attacks. They expanded their territory, constructed buildings and wrote books. They wanted to be better than their enemies, whom they feared. History gives us a lot of such examples.

1. We can lock ourselves in the room. Cover ourselves with a blanket - and be afraid of living, going outside and communicating with people. We can stop working and just "spit" at the ceiling.

2. We can understand that fear is something good. We can find the reason for fear, think about why we have it. Adopt a strategy what can I do to get rid of fear. When we meet our FEAR, we can take action. First of all go outside. Smile at the sun. And by small steps of a 5 year-old child, we can train our immunity depending on which fear we have.

Here the main thing is to make a CHOICE. DEATH What do we know about death? Who is this woman with a braid in a black dress? What is this terrible event in life? What are dead people?

Zombies? Vampires? Werewolves? Maybe! In the 21st century, people have learned to drive a car, watch TV and use the Internet. We get all the information about the world around us from movies and TV series. But if you include critical thinking - the scripts of all the films are written by people to whom it is very important to sell their film/series. And how to do it – is to write a scene where the protagonist dies - and it's a terrible tragedy. Of course, it is very scary, but this negative aspect makes us remember this emotion of DEATH and to carry it in our head throughout life.

FRENCH LANGUAGE vs GREEK LANGUAGE

Although cultural diversity can be noted in the kitchen, it is also possible to notice differences in everyday life.

MY PROJECT

My name is Emma and today I will tell you about my project, which is in a therapeutic horse riding center near Kalamata.

First, I will present the project to you: The therapeutic horse riding center is a rehabilitative organization giving children with physical and mental disabilities therapies through horses and horse riding.

I work with Siim, another volunteer, and the owners Amalia and Panayotis and I spend very rewarding moments with them.

My tasks consist of preparing, training and taking care of the horses before and after the sessions with children. During the sessions, my role is to assist the therapists, for example by holding the horse or by playing therapy games with the children.

When you compare Portuguese and Greek mentality can you see any differences?

Maria: From my experience, for Greeks it's normal to arrive more than one hour late to an appointment, while for Portuguese 15/20 minutes is the maximum acceptable. Greek people are not really trying to reach an ecological/sustainable way of living, since they are still ok with leaving trash on the floor or not really doing recycling. While most Portuguese people are more and more aware of ecological policies and try to do the best they can in this subject.

What do you like about Greece and Kalamata the most?

Greece, because I did an erasmus semester in Athens last year. And after spending quarantine and summer in Portugal I really needed to go out. In Kalamata, I just want to be able to do a personal project and develop something with the community.

Maria: The weather, the amazing landscapes where the mountains meet the sea. The hospitality, the really great food and greek chill way of living.

Maria: I don’t think we have, we only refer to Greeks in some popular sayings, like “I saw myself Greek with that work”. Which means that I had a lot of difficulty doing that work.

COCO - THE FILM

For this “dark” issue, I’d like to present

Coco, a 3D computer-animated fantasy film about a Mexican boy, Miguel, who - in order to pursue his dream of becoming a musician - goes all the ...and pays a visit to his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, who used to be a great ultra popular musician of humble origins, enchanting folks live and on tv with his voice and guitar, eventually dying in a tragic stage accident in 1942.

First of all, why “Coco”? Well, Coco is Miguel’s great-grandmother, an incredibly sweet lady, daughter to Mamá Imelda, the long-deceased founder of the family shoe-making business, highly respected for her strength of character and resilience, which allowed her to make an opportunity out of a crisis and raise a little girl all by herself after being abandoned by her husband. Due to her age, Coco suffers from some sort of degenerative brain condition, which makes her confuse past and present, so we mostly see her reliving her happy childhood.

As I was mentioning, Coco opens with a sad family history, in which Miguel’s great-grandfather - also a great musician abandoned his wife and little girl, starting a new era of shoe-making and music banishing for the whole family. In the first sequence, a big family tree is set up on an altar (of course, the traitor ancestor cut from all family pictures), celebrating with ofrendas the Día de los Muertos - the Day of 36

The whole family is busy with the preparations for one of the most important festivities of the year, and Miguel is frustrated and saddened by the ban on music, preventing him from expressing his one true passion, and forcing him to set up his own personal little altar in honour of the great Ernesto de la Cruz. He wants to participate in the annual town’s talent contest, but his grandmother catches him playing a guitar and angrily reminds him of the tragedy brought by music into their family, trying to convince him to leave music and be a part of the family’s celebrations. His answer is blunt: he doesn’t care about the ofrendas, he wants to play music.

I’m not going to spoiler too much about this movie, but there are some very interesting elements I’d like to point out.

Personally, I think the real protagonist of this movie is Mexico: its landscapes, traditions, colours and flavours. I haven’t spent a lot of time in Mexico - just a couple of days - but I do have a few friends who are from different parts of the country and I remember reading - as a teenager - a book that left me a very strong impression (Como agua para chocolate).

Why “Coco” for a Link issue on death and fears? Well, for me this is a movie that talks about death by portraying it as part of a cycle where different elements are inextricably intertwined. The most relevant of them, I think, is memory. Especially in these difficult and extraordinary COVID 2019 times, I find it very important to represent death as something that concerns who leaves us as much as us - those who are left to live on. In the Land of the Dead, only those who are remembered by someone who is still alive can stay, while others slowly disappear. I find this concept very interesting: the point is not that someone dies and someone lives, it’s their connection, the fact that they remember each other, and they support each other through memory. Throughout the movie, we can see Miguel becoming more and more aware of what “the Land of the Living” looks like from the perspective of those who have pas-

ZAKYNTHOS - Navagio Beach and the Blue Caves

This June I and four other volunteers decided to take a five day trip to one of the Ionian islands, Zakynthos. We saw amazing places there, but we saved the most famous for the last day. Navagio Beach, which means shipwreck beach, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and one of the main attractions of Greece, this is why it is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

A lonely cove, vertigo cliffs, crystal clear waters, white sand and a ship stranded in it. The view couldn't be more perfect. The skeleton of the ship that overlooks the bay, has remained there, lonely and rickety, for more than 30 years after a storm. It is the Panagiotis, which, it seems, was used by the Italian mafia to transport whiskey and smuggled tobacco from Turkey.

Nobody has thought, not even remotely, to remove the ship, because it has become one of the incentives to visit this place.

Being able to visit this place without practically people is surely an experience that we will not be able to repeat. It really was amazing, incredibly beautiful. What impressed me the most was the color of the water. I've never seen a color like this. It was an electric turquoise color.

It seemed that someone had put coloring in it.

Due to the bad state of the sea, Andreas could not embark on the sand so we had to jump off the boat and then swim against the waves to shore. For me it was an incredible experience to bathe in that turquoise water between the cliffs that surround the beach and the ivory white sand. We visit the Panagiotis closely and explore the corners of the beach. To get back to the ship, we had to go one by one. It was a bit difficult because the waves were heading towards the beach.

Instead of looking for a tour on a boat that would transport a lot of people, we found a good deal with a small boat just for us.

We met our captain, Andreas, in a restaurant in the middle of the road. There, he told us to follow him with the car to Puerto Vromi. The road was full of curves and Andreas was going very fast. When we got there, we got on the boat and started the adventure. That day, it was quite windy and the sea was agitated. So we voted against the sea with great intensity. The place was incredibly beautiful, full of high cliffs.

We finally reached our destination, the beach.

Normally this beach is crowded with tourists but due to COVID-19 we were practically alone, since at that time the borders of Greece were still closed for foreign tourists. There were only two more boats and no one on the beach.

Then, we went to visit the Blue Caves.

These arched caves, where the turquoise blue sea water runs through, are located on the cliffs that surround the beach. They can be explored in a small boat but we were unable to enter some due to the waves. After this, we went to the port. There, we took the car and went to a viewpoint where you can see a perfect view of the beach and take the typical postcard photo. Finally, we finished our adventure. It really seems like a recommendable experience to me.

PAST EVENT HIKING AND CLEANING IN KATO - ANO KARVELI

On October 18th, a walk was organised by the EOS association of Kalamata (ΕΟΣ Καλαμάτας), to cover the most beautiful hiking trails in the villages of Taygetos and Kalamata, on the path linking the villages of Kato (Κάτω) and Ano Karveli (Άνω Καρβέλι).

It is a historical path that plays a central role in the ancient network of paths of Messinia and Taygetos and was probably once part of the axis that linked Kalamata to Sparta. During this hike, the path was cleaned by collecting the rubbish found on the path, as well as cutting branches and pulling up plants that had grown on the path, making it impassable.

During the 6 hour walk we were able to admire magnificent panoramas, as at the start with the view of the town of Kalamata and its beaches or with the arrival at the village of Ano Karveli with its mountainous landscapes. The route ended with the meal with all the hikers on a small square in Ano Karveli with local products such as wine or seasonal fruits, a musical atmosphere accompanied by traditional dances before returning to Kalamata.

RECIPES FROM FRANCE QUICHE LORRAINE

Easy 1 h (15+45) 4 servings

INGREDIENTS:

• 200g of shortcrust pastry • 200g of bacon • 30g of butter • 3 eggs

• 20 cl of fresh cream • 20 cl of milk • nutmeg, salt, pepper

PREPARATION: Preheat oven to 180 degrees and roll out the dough in a mold.

Prick it with a fork. Sprinkle with shavings of butter.

Fry the bacon in a pan. Beat the eggs, cream and milk - add the bacon to it.

Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg and pour over the dough.

Cook 45 to 50 minutes. it's ready, enjoy your meal!

RECIPES FROM FRANCE CREME BRULEE

Easy 55 min (20+35) 8 servings

INGREDIENTS: • 50 cl of liquid cream • 100 g sugar • 6 egg yolks

• 6 tablespoons of brown sugar • 20 cl of milk • 1 vanilla pod

PREPARATION: 1. Cut the vanilla bean in 2 to extract the seeds.

2. Heat the cream over low heat with the pods and let infuse.

3. Vigorously beat the yolks, sugar + vanilla seeds to obtain a foamy mixture.

4. Gradually pour the lukewarm and filtered cream over the yellow / sugar mixture, stirring continuously.

5. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.

6. Place the cream in the ramendions, and cook in a bain-marie for 30 to 35 minutes, the cream should shake like a custard.

7. Take it out of the oven, put the creams in the fridge for at least 4 hours.

8. Pour a layer of sugar on the bottom and let caramelize with your torch.
