PAQUITA

Angelina

Hello there! My fool name is Aleksandra but everyone calls me Ola. I’m 19 and I just finished high school. I come from capital of Poland – Warsaw. I love chocolate, amazing harmonies, good guitar riffs, totally crazy hairstyles and classic rock. I’m a dancer therefore I will be teaching contemporary dance in the Youth Centre but my primary job will be in therapeutic horse riding centre. See you around!

Hi ! My name is Paquita, I'm 26 years old and I'm from Marseille in France. I will stay here for 11 months. My mission will be working in therapeutic horse-riding centre and in KEFIAP Center assisting people with disabilities. I just finished my studies in Art-therapy and I'm very enthusiastic to begin my EVS. This will be a great experience for me :)

Hello! I’m Angelina and I’m 26 years old. I decided to come to Kalamata as a volunteer because I already knew about this kind of opportunities and it was time for drastic changes in my life. You can find me at the Youth Center where I’ll be leading Russian language and fitness + stretching workshop. Can’t wait to meet you at Kentro Neon.

OPHELIE

AntIa

Hello there ! My name is Maïlén I'm 25 years old. I come from Brussels in Belgium and I've graduated a few months ago as a social worker. This year is my volunteery year : before Greece I was in Bénin for 2 months where I worked with abused young girls, now I came to Kalamata for 6 months to work on the ACT Project helping refugees. In my spare time, I'm a musician (singer and violinist), I love to read, art, watch series and movies and have a drink with friends.

Bonjour! My name is Ophélie, I come from France. I am in Kalamata for 11 months and will volunteer at the Day Care Center for children with autism. Living abroad is a wonderful opportunity to meet fascinating people and learn about cultures. It allows to become independent, open-minded and avoid ethnocentrism. I can’t wait to discover the greek way of life and visit the country. I’m also excited about tasting the food (of course!). I like to exchange and discover so… see you soon around Kalamata!

Καλημέρα! My name is Antía and I come from Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. I have arrived in this city because some years ago I made the “mistake” –but, who chooses these things? - of falling in love with Greece and with the Greek language. So, after finishing my university studies in Humanities and Literature, I decided to start my Greek periplus, periplus that, after Thessaloniki and Crete, has found its new stage here in Kalamata. Να μας δούμε στο ταξίδι! 7

I’m Mina and I’m a 28 years old free spirit. I don’t like routine and I think that everything that seems interesting is worth trying. I’m fascinated about human interaction and being part of K.A.NE. gives me opportunity to meet and work with many beautiful people. I'm into si-fi and superheroes and I guess that shaped me into an idealist who believes that there is beauty and courage in everything, no matter how small. Therefore, our duty as human beings is to highlight it.

Hello, my name is Nicolas, I'm 25 years old, and I come from Lille in north of France. Last years, I worked as a volunteer in an association in Lille for a civic service. There, I worked with families in precarious situations, help them save money and, at the same time, raise their awareness of sustainable development. I am in Kalamata for 6 months to work on the ACT project to help migrants and refugees. I also hope to improve my english. In my life, I like music, reading books, watching series and having good times with friends.

Hallo! I’m Maria from Liechtenstein and I’m 19. I finished high school this summer and now I’m doing EVS to take a break before attending university and, hopefully, studying social education. Working at my parent’s restaurant and now at the dog-rescue-center is going to be a nice experience before my "normal life" begins. Because it might be interesting, I’ll answer some often-asked questions about Liechtenstein. Yes, we are a very small country (37000 people in 167km2) and we do speak German. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. Lots of Love, Maria. 9

A RT S Your favorite artist oNE LEGEND FROM YOUR COUNTRY A NT IA I couldn’t say that it is my favourite artist, but Luis Seoane is one that I really admired. He was a prolific and multifaceted artist -he practised the poetry and the painting- and journalist, and he is one of the best exponent of the Galician vanguardism and his job is full of political meaning and social criticism.

SHEILA I don't have a favorite artist, I appreciate all Art in general, what I can emphasize that I like musicals because it combines dance and music and the artists do a great group work.

SA NDRA Van Gogh - It was the fir st ar tist that m a de m e loose the p ercep tion of tim e. I really ap p re c ia te all the d etails in his p aintings, the color s … A ll his stor y and his great talent are an am a zin g com b ination.

OPHELIE Satire cartoonists are artists I truly appreciate the work and courage. Political cartoons are made of hyperbole and satire to highlight corruption, violence, political nonsense… Through caricatures they manage to simply express complicated situations. Nowadays when I’m mentioning editorial cartoons I couldn’t not think about Charlie Hebdo and all satire cartoonists who were killed all around the world because of their work…

M A RIA Kattv alk, she m ight not b e the b est or m ost fam ous ar tist (ev en thought this p er son d o e s n ot exist) she is the reason why i star ted d r awin g th e way i d r aw tod ay. She has an own and b e a u tif u l ar tsty le which is a goal I’m wor king on m yse lf right now. 17

MAÏLÉN I love a lot of differents artists but the most inspiring for me is probably Frida Kahlo because it alone represents the daily struggles that women face on a daily basis. Her work was so touching about her life who wasn’t easy : she had the poliomyelite when she was young, at 19 she had a bus accident that caused many irreversible damages to her health, she fought for freedom of speech in her country and been arrested for that, she had multiple miscarriages, etc. To me, she’s probably the bravest woman of the world !

RACHAEL I’m captivated by every facet of Artistry (portraiture, painting, photography) and so, I couldn’t pick just one; but perhaps some of the most intriguing is Ellie Macs (Instagram ellimacssfx) and Sidney Cumbie (ishootthedead) – warning do not visit if you’re squeamish! These artists use an array of different mediums to create amazing special effects.

ALICE When I visited Berlin I fell in love with the art on the Berlin wall. It symbolises how oppression could be changed into freedom through art. I do not know the specific artists names who contributed but all of the art represents independency after Berlin was divided by the wall which I think is very powerful. The most well known image is the Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker kissing but my favourite is the peace sign.

SHUKRI Beyonce is an American singer, she is amazing songwriter, actress and businesswoman. I like her because she is a great singer and a strong minded person and i love her lyrics.

18

NELLA One French artist has captivated my soul since few years: Disiz, a french conscious rapper. For me, he is really different from the other rappers. He includes in his lyrics many cultural references, different vibes, spirits. I could not choose one favorite song but I can suggest you “poisson etrange” which is a tribute to Alan Kurdi, and all the migrants. This is a real affecting music !

ANGELINA Expressing the whole palitra of man's emotions with the help of words - that's the art personally for me. The Sun of Russian poetry and prose, Alexander Pushkin, is my favorite artist so far in this field. Can't resist not telling about him in 6 June, the day of his birth 1799, and official day of the Russian Language.

NICOLAS It's very difficult for me to select just one of the millions of artists in many different forms of artistic expression. So I would rather evoke the form of expression that is music, and more precisely styles like post rock and post hardcore that I particularly like. I particularly like the latter, a genre that combines the original state of mind of hardcore punk (distortion, speed, aggressiveness) with a certain subtlety, and notably, more melodic and creative moments.

DUC "You can shoot me with your words You can cut me with your eyes, You can kill me with your hatefulness, But just like air, I’ll rise" Despite not having interests in literature art, the words and wisdom from the poem “Still I Rise” written by Dr. Maya Angelou has always been an inspiration to me through the thickness and thinness of life. 19

ALICE I am currently not practising any form of art, I am not an artistic person but I would like to be. When I was a lot younger I could draw quite well but I did not practise hard enough and I lost the skill.

SHUKRI I am not practicing nothing at the moment but In the future I would like to practice kizomba is a Portuguese dance, it is one of the most popular genres of dance and music originating from Angola. It is a derivative of samba with a mix of kilapanda and Angolan merengue and sung generally in Portuguese. I t i s m u s i c w i t h a r o m a n t i c f l o w. i f e l l i n l o v e with this dance when doing a exchange and the portuguese group started dancing.

NELLA Since I was a little girl, henna has always attracted me. So I practiced by my own and I created my own style, and design. Sometimes I offer home services for special occasions like traditionnal wedding. I really enjoy when people are pleased by my work !

ANGELINA At the age of 10 my mom took me to the Dance Festival concert. I was enchanted by the people performing on the stage, mostly children. Truth be told, bright colorful clothes and energetic music were the reason of my love, not the art of dancing itself. All in all, I can say that attending dance classes wasn't waste of time!

22

NICOLAS When I was younger, I practiced guitar. I started playing acoustic guitar alone or with my father, and then I switched to an electric guitar that I was given for Christmas, when I was 15. In the beginning, I learned to play guitar with blues and then, I started playing others kinds of music, alone or with friends. I still have my guitar today and I’m not ready to get rid of it, even if I don’t play (but I want to get back to it).

DUC C u r r e n t l y, I ’ m n o t p r a c t i s i n g a n y f o r m s o f a r t ; h o w e v e r, I u s e d t o p l a y p i a n o w h e n I was a kid. OLA I am a member of a dance theatre (I’ve been dancing since I am 6), improv theatre, also, I’ve been performing numerous times with different theatre/performance groups and took part in several theatre projects. B e s i d e t h i s , I a m s i n g i n g , p l a y i n g g u i t a r, ukulele, djembe and other percussion instruments.

JACK In the past i have practiced kayaking i have a 2 star award and played water polo sports in the kayak it has been a few years since i have done this and would like to practice at this again.

SANDRA Classical dance and gymnastics. Since little that I am fascinated for it but unfortunately I never had the time or the opportunity to try it. I am fascinated by motion, biomechanics and physics and it is amazing how this is combine in classical dance and gymnastics. I would like to try it.

M A RIA I n gener al I want to exp er ience m ore of th e d r awing esp ecially p ainting and d igital wor ld. Also, I’d lov e to m ore m ore sculp tur ing. I did one wor k in highschool b ut it would b e am a zin g t o m ake a full siz ed statue once!

MAÏLÉN I’ve always been bad at drawing and sometimes I think I should follow some lessons. On the other hand I’m a musical person and I really would like to learn to play more instruments like piano, double bass (I soooo love this instrument) and skin bois.

R A CHA EL S om ething I would like to tr y is oil p a in tin g, usually I stick to p encils, charcoal and gr a ph ite howev er I think oils would b e a good cha lle n ge by taking m e out m y com for t z one.

25

ALICE I would like to practise gymnastics because gymnasts always look so graceful when they perform. I used to do trampolining in high school which is a form of gymnastics in a way and I loved it. I would like to start it again one day if I have the opportunity.

SHUKRI i like to draw good, when i was younger i used to draw a really good lion teach by my cousin. but as i grow older and older i forgot how to do that. i would like to try and draw nature and landscapes.

NELLA I think I would like to try graffiti, or something in link with drawing. Art is vital, thanks to it you can express yourself and explain your own world and vision. When class is boring, I am always doodling some random forms in my notebook, really bad student‌

ANGELINA Some consider it as street and buildings wall damaging, however it might be real masterpiece. Graffiti is the art that I always wanted to do. Despite being toxic (due to dying paints) and exhausting long time work, the outcomes outweigh the efforts! Still in my bucket list!

26

NICOLAS I really don't know how to draw, despite a lot of people doing very well in my family and circle, and a stylist brother, I never had the patience or inspiration to draw properly. I think it's really something I'd like to learn to do. Writing is also another form of artistic expression that attracts me, and with which I think I have more abilities.

DUC Although I have ceased to practice Vovinam – a Vietnamese traditional martial art – for more than 10 years, my enthusiasm towards it is still burning bright. I yearn to be able to learn a new kind of martial arts in the near future. I was attracted to martial art due to not only the enhancement of my vitality and endurance but also its value of respect, honor, integrity, and humility.

JACK i would like to practice playing musical instruments i would like to learn the drums, guitar and saxophone. i would also like to learn how to meditate. when i was younger i did performing arts i would like to practice this again.

OLA I see my future in the music or theatre industry, therefore I want to try maximum of those. There is so many techniques, practices… new things to explore! Although I am already many many years in this subject and it’s not new itself to me, I feel like I don’t know it as much, deep and complet, as i would want.

A RT S Is it LEGEND art? FROM YOUR COUNTRY oNE

In this article I’m going to focus only on art in terms of drawing and painting, as this is the topic I’m most experienced in in general and where I encountered this problem. As someone that draws since she’s able to hold a pencil, art or the act of drawing has always been a huge part of my life. In fact it has been very useful as my parents could take me to every place no matter how boring the concert or other occasion we visited was for me, as soon as my mother had some pieces of paper (if not, the table cloth was good enough as well) and some coloured pencils I was entertained for the whole evening. I also made a lot of adult friends that were sitting next to me and had no choice but to join me in my drawing session. 28

Growing up I never stopped drawing, nowhere. I drew with everyone, always and with everything. Also in school. During class I was most likely doodling something, if not making an actual piece. At some points in high school I had a portable set of aquarelle colours with me and drew with that during almost every class and pause. I had a lot of people that inspired me and my stile changed a lot. Also the things I drew were always of a big variety, but later on almost everything I drew had either scars, open wounds or any other creepy/hurt aspect to it. Often I drew “pretty” ladies, there was no sense behind the pictures most of them were just more or less beautiful women, not a ton of variety except in their scars. For me this was no problem, a lot of my pictures might not have a huge story behind them, most of them had detailed that I just added because I thought it might look good, but for me this was still art, the art I’ve been practising for years. One day in psychology class my teacher brought up the topic art. Which was no surprise since we were the music, art and psychology class, but what she said quite shocked me. For her and a lot of other people, art is only art if there is a (preferably politic or critic) sense behind the drawing. There MUST be a story and a reason for every detail added. People that just draw pretty pictures like Bob Ross are not “real” artists. She admitted that he is very talented, but the paintings he created are simply not real art. My class, as there were a lot of girls thinking like me, started arguing with her saying also pretty pictures are art in their own way, but she didn’t let loose, that was her final state on the definition of art. Later on I heard of an aspiring artist on YouTube that he has the same problem in art school. And while I understand that an Art-school might take the definition of art very serious, and of course they can critique your decisions and everything you do. I simply learned that this is not what I’m ever going to study or do in my life. Later on I heard of an aspiring artist on YouTube that he has the same problem in art school. A RT S Heart for art

I'm proud to present 2 Russian cities: Kirov (my native city) and Nizhny Novgorod (my actual city of living till this EVS journey). Both cities are close to Moscow and share the same culture, habits, still have unique features appropriate only for them. It goes without saying that Matryeshka doll is one of the most popular souvenirs from Russia. Painted in traditional tangy patterns it embodies old-fashion slavic culture and presents unique Russian heritage, the oldest handicraft with 4 centuries history. 30

Khokhloma is a decorative painting of wooden utensils and furniture. Originally it was called after the same-name village in Nizhny Novgorod region, the birthplace of the technique.

Its hallmark is complete hand-painted as if golden ornaments on the wooden prep. Phenomen of the technique is that painters in fact don't use any gold, only natural paints. The secret is in the long lasting procedure, patience and hearts of the Khokhloma creators. Thanks to religious painters (who invented the art craft) and their real love for folk culture we can take pride in their results. Good news is that it doesn't require much effort and money (8 euros) to visit the exhibition and get one more skill under the belt - try out yourself

in the role of a painter, in the regional Museum, Semenov city. For creative people strongly recommended! Recent promotion of the unique let-it-be-called brand has taken the new turn, due to the World Cup 2018, 14 June-15 July. Who said that urban art and traditional art can't co exist together? Modern factory in Semenov developed limited collection of souvenirs produced with the Khokhloma symbol. The city of Nizhny Novgorod was completely renovated to the Global event. An integral part of the process was installation of Sport symbols with the elements of classic-still-stylish ornament. One more reason has been proved by action - Khokloma is not only the most popular saved Russian handicraft, but it is adaptable and successfully appliable in modern context.

A RT S A Sample of Contemporary Galician Artists oNE LEGEND FROM YOUR COUNTRY Sample of Contemporary Galician Artists

The Galician writer Manuel Rivas spoke one time about the “telon de grelos”, “The Grelos Curtain” (a word joke between the iron curtain –telón de acero in Spanish- and the grelos, a typical vegetable of the Galician cuisine). He used this ironical expression to refers to the imaginary and symbolic line that separates Galicia for the rest of Spain and that avoids that our artists, productions, etc. become unknown outside our borders (unfortunately, sometimes, even inside). So, let’s break today the Curtain and to show to the world some of our artists of the last century. Maruja Mallo (1902-1995) : against what is mainly believed, the Generation of 27 was not only constituted by men writer like Lorca or Cernuda. Another artists, and women, were part of the group that used to meet in the pre-civil war Madrid. Maruja Mallo, surrealist painter, was one of them. Owner of a captivating personality, she had freedom as a standard and the character ended up eclipsing the painter, like happed with another artist like Dalí. This last one called her half angel and half shellfish. Some common topics in her job are the city and its inhabitants, the popular pastimes, the velocity and the simultaneity of scenes and perspectives.

33

Urbano Lugrís (1908) : Lugrís is known like the “painter of the sea”, because it is the main topic of his surrealistic paintings, in which the mythical and the oneiric elements intertwine. In his paintings we can easily find mythological creatures of the sea like mermaids, and the blue tones are dominant over his work. In it, we can also realize the influence of the metaphysic painters like Chirico or Carrà. He was also painting sceneries for “La Barraca”, the theatrical group of Lor Francisco Leiro (1957) : painter, but mainly sculptor, in Galicia is especially known for his sculpture Sireno (1991), situated in the centre of Vigo, work that produced a big “shock” between the citizens when it was collocated for its avant-garde style. And the beginning, it was considered, simply, “ugly”, but nowadays it have become one the symbols of the city. His style is principally expressionist, and it has like referents the traditional Galician sculpture made in wood and the archaic forms of sculpture. “Las meninas de Canido”: this is not any particular artist, but an artistic initiative that has already integrated a lot of world artist. In fact, one of the last paintings that have appeared in the neighbourhood it is thought that could be a work of Bansky. Canido is a neighbourhood situated in the city of Ferrol, in the north of Galicia. It is a popular area, in which the living conditions were not the most appropriate. In 2008, Eduardo Hermida and another artists, like a act of protest and complaint about the situation of abandoned that they were living, starting to drawn “meninas” in the walls of the buildings.

34

From them, each September a festival is celebrated in Canido, where international artists are invited to fill the walls with their personal vision of the famous painting of Velazquez. Dare to get into the journey of the Galician art and I am sure you will enjoy and discover new unthinkable perspectives !

A RT S G r eek a rt i sts yo uYOUR s h o uCOUNTRY ld k n ow oNE LEGEND FROM Yiannis Gaitis (b. 1923, died in 1984) Born in Athen, he studied in Athens Fine Art Academy and he moved to France in 1954. He came back permanently to Greece in 1974. He started with gestural, abstract painting, but he change it in direction of neofigurative art and he created his own ‘trademark’. Wherever you will see ‘the little man’ ‘anthropaki’ - you can be sure you are watching Gaitis work. The little men are dressed in identical way - hats and plaid jackets. There are symbols of the middle class propriety, they are diagnosis of modern society - alone, homogeneous, interchangeable - with the obsession of watching and the feeling of being watched. He’s works are not limited to painting only - he often was using sculpture, wooden constructions, utilitarian applications or artistic happenings

36

TAKIS (Panagiotis Vassilakis, b.1925) World well known artist. If you had opportunity to be in Paris most likely you already saw some of his works in public spaces around the city (like ‘La Bassin’ in La Defense). He’s works since early 50 are employing elemental forces - magnetic fields - to create movement, sound, form in his sculptures. What is interesting about him is that he doesn’t have a formal art education and he calls himself ‘instinctive scientist’. I saw some of his works both in Paris and Greece and as they are very often kinetic I will leave you with this link presenting his work Musical (MMCA Thessaloniki)

Jannis Kounellis (b.1936, died in 2017) He was a Greek- Italian artist. He was born in Piraeus, he was living in Greece during the Second World War and Greek Civil war but in 1956 he moved to Rome. One of the artists from the Art Povera movement. He starts with using stenciled alphabets and numbers in his paintings but soon he found it not enough. He wanted more. 37

He incorporated the found objects to his paintings, even living animal at the end reaching the installation/sculpture and even the manipulation of the exhibition space by creating a labyrinthine environment.

Chryssa Romanos (b. 1931, died in 2006) She spends 20 years studying, and than living in France. Inspired by New Realism and Neo Dada she worked a lot with collage art. Her works are criticizing the society and the capitalistic culture. To create her works she was using advertisements, paces of newspapers and magazines, photography, letters and handwriting. Her works are full of dynamic interchanges in meanings. After 1980s she started to work with decollages. What is it? Artists start the artwork by gluing multiple layers of collage materials and after that with a wet sponge it’s removing some of them and this process continue.

His work is a dialogue with the people that lives in the city, he chooses an abandoned place and transform it a living place that speaks with who is passing by. His faces usually are also characterized by the expressive eyes wat gives them some sensation of humanization. Art and psychology

After mythology and cinema, let’s continue to explore how psychology is interacting with others subjects and fields.

Psychology of Art Art Psychology is an interdisciplinary subject which studies perception, understanding, art characteristics and productions. Art psychologists are looking at the structural aspects: the conscious and unconscious processes that took place into the artist’s mind during the creation, as well as the processes during the interaction with the final production. Psychology of art is also analyzing the environmental aspects, the culture and the period in which the creation has been made.

41

Wölfflin, was one of the first whom study art through psychology. In 1886, he wrote a dissertation which shown architecture could be understood from a purely psychological (as opposed to a historical-progressivist) point of view. In 1910, Freud psychoanalyzed Leonardo Da Vinci’s paintings but results were criticized due to the questionable accuracy of posthume analyze and the different cultural contexts between the two men (as we saw before having in mind the culture and the time in which the creation belongs is essential in Psychology of Art). On the other hand, Carl Jung had a positive impact on the development of the Psychology of Art. His approach was to understand the psyche through dreams, arts, mythology,philosophy... He stressed that personal and collective unconscious are included into artistic creations.

Art Psychology was first developed in Germany, and quickly expanded worldwide: USSR with Vygotski, England, France with Malraux’s “Psychology of Art”, USA... In 1970, Psychology of Art had a major place into universities. Today, psychology still plays an important role in art discourse, mainly in the field of art appreciation. Some of the actual branches of Psychology of Art are putting the light on awareness, others on the unconscious. From this state, it has been shown it could be a treatment for behavioral and mental disorders. A concise definition of Art Therapy would be “a form of therapy that uses the creative process 42

of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Art therapy is encouraging the expression and understanding of emotions through the use of the creative process”. Painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, writing,photography... are some example of tools used by Art-therapists. Art Therapy is improving cognitive and sensory motor functions, foster self esteem and self awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress…To beneficiate of Art therapy, patients do not need artistic skills. Art Therapy is seeing creation not from an art approach, but for psychoanalytic point of view and treatment role.

Art therapists are professionals trained in both art and therapy. They are knowledgeable about human development, psychological theories, clinical practice, spiritual, multicultural and artistic traditions, and the healing potential of art. They learnt to pick up on nonverbal symbols and metaphors that are often expressed through art and the creative process, concepts that are usually difficult to express with words. The family is traditionally an important factor for social cohesion and societal development in countries of origin and destination. But migration is also a source of great difficulties for families and their members: long-term separation, giving members of the same family a transnational identity or integration problems in the destination country. Family migration increasingly affects children, either because they are separated from their parents and must remain at home, or because they migrate with their families or alone. Migration has negative effects on the family that need to be better established and that require policy attention. Migrants and their families contribute greatly to the development of destination and origin countries through their human, cultural and economic potential. Despite this, research and policy debates tend to focus on individual migrants rather than on the family as a unit, or to approach the family from a purely economic perspective. As regards family reunification, common rules have been established between EU 46

Member States since 2003 in order to determine the conditions of entry of thirdcountry nationals through family reunification. The Directive defines the conditions of admission and residence for thirdcountry family members who join a third-country national already residing in a Member State. This Directive does not apply to EU citizens. The measure has been criticised by NGOs and academics for introducing a relatively low level of harmonisation. On the other hand, public opinion, supported by politicians' positions, has made family reunification the central point of their exasperation with immigration. Some Member States have even introduced restrictive rules and have even called for the directive to be amended so that additional conditions can be imposed on family reunification. Moreover, we can say that family reunification represents immigration almost as important as asylum in the world. The reunification of relatives (children, spouses, parents, etc.) accounts for 40% of flows to developed countries, with a total of 1.6 million family residence permits issued in 2015, i.e. as many as the number of asylum applications registered in 2016.The migrant population coming for family reasons is predominantly female (60%), younger and less qualified than the other categories of immigrants. While migration can have a positive impact on families, it may also put them in more vulnerable situation with risks of abuse, abandonment, and exposure to exploitation. 47

Access to basic services including education and health care remains a challenge for migrant families and unaccompanied children, especially those with irregular status and cut off from support and protection services. Challenges linked to the protection of migrant families require particular attention and a better coordinated response from governments, international organizations and civil society. Appropriate policy responses need to include the gender perspective as an essential component, since women and girls are more vulnerable and most likely to face all kinds of exploitation. Youth account for a large share of today's world population and international migration flows and hold great potential towards positive development. In the absence of appropriate policy responses, migration risks can reduce the potential of these youth and expose them to significant human right violations. Integration measures must be proportionate to everyone, to ensure that family reunification can be granted even if the initial requirements are not met. The personal situation must always be taken into consideration, such as vulnerability, level of education...etc. Particular attention must be paid to the fact that, in some parts of the world, women and children have less access to education and literacy. Language and integration courses must be offered in an accessible and appropriate manner. We can conclude that family and its potential positive development implications have been neglected for too long, and deserve more attention and discussion. Migration policies in Europe today are still poor in terms of integration. Admittedly, we can accept that these measures can only vary from one country to another and that a certain freedom must be given for each Member State, but not to the point of such a rejection as we can see.

MY project wo r k i n g w i t h r efu g ees - act p roj ect

My name is Nella, I am 20. I just finished studying International Trade and I always wanted to achieve a volunteer, it means a lot for me ; for my professionnal carreer and personnal life, one of my goal is to be a world citizen. My sending organization is ADICE, (in Roubaix, France). I find a project according to my knowledge and what I want, so…Here I am in Kalamata, Greece, to raise awarness about the migrant situation. During my two months stay, I will write articles about refugees and migrants situation : history, stories, testifies… and more generally immigration : causes, consequences… Moreover, I will try to help migrants children by proposing playful workshops, and summer lessons. 49

We also organize events in Kalamata to sensitize all public by putting forward activities. For example, during the Anti war week, we organized two events, one in the square, one in the city. I twas really nice to see people putting some interests on what we do. Children were really pleased with the ÂŤ doves workshop Âť : we had precutted white doves and we let children put colors on them. At the end, we had this :

The 20th of June, is the world refugee day, for this occasion, our team decided to organize one minute silence at the port, in the tribute of the victims of immigration. We will put greec poster on our back and put candles. Even if it is not a big event, we wanted to form a thought about them.

an

rachael Hello Rachael, thank you for accepting this interview, can you tell me a few words about you? Hello, my name is Rachael, I am 21 years old, I am graduated psychology. How long are you in Kalamata for ? I’m in Kalamata for 6 months –not long enough. How long have you been here ? I have been in Kalamata for 10 days, its already flying by, I’m dreading leaving in December already. Have you done voluntary work before ? I have done voluntary work before in Liverpool I worked with an NGO called MRANG, a women’s organization for refugees and asylum seekers. I did emotional support and case work. I absolutely loved my time there and learnt A LOT. I met some amazing service users and volunteers alike (one of which happens to be Alice). I also realised that I would like to pursue a career in NGO work in the future which is one of the reason’s I’m here! 51

Have you worked abroad before ? No but I plan on working abroad in the future, I’m hoping my next stop after Kalamata will be Barcelona What made you want to do voluntary work in Kalamata ? I wanted to pursue working with refugees in an international and different culture Greece in profound for its refugee camps which I plan on visiting. It is also important to raise awareness and to help the community and the nice weather in Kalamata is much better than the weather in Newcastle where I live it also is a beautiful place to practice things I didn’t have time for at the university such as sketching painting reading and yoga How do you feel about living with so many people ? I am used to living with loads of people during my three years at uni. I used to live in old halls on a floor with 20 people sharing two showers, not great! The room sharing is new but surprisingly okay. Everyone has been very welcoming and lovely. And lastly, what is your favourite type of art (do you practice one) ? Couldn’t pick just one I love them all. I probably would say realism using charcoal & graphite but I also love SFX makeup (special effects). I practice both of these.

Thank you Rachael for your time !

JACK ACKLAM

interview with a collaborating structure Horse Riding Center - Ιππόσχεση Καλαμάτας

Ipposchesi, also known by name of a Horse Centre has been cooperating with K.A.NE for 3 years now. Centre provide multiple services for youngsters with various disabilities but was based on horse therapy – type of therapy where usage of the horse, it’s movement, presence etc. is primary due to develop certain skills. Today we meet Panagiotis Siavelis, a physiotherapist that alongside his life partner, Amalia is leading the centre. How long this place is working and why you decided to open it? We’ve been open since summer 2015, so it will make a third year now. Before, Amalia was doing horse therapies in other centre in Kalamata but when, after a decade, it closed, she had an idea to open one by herself and continue her work here. *jokingly* And of course made her poor husband suffer with another of her “brilliant ideas”. Amalia had previous experience with horse therapy. Did you? Not really. I visited Amalia’s at work couple of times and helped but the first real experience was here. I had to learn everything from the scratch. 53

What is the difference between working for someone in this field and leading a whole centre? Honestly, we feel more like therapists than centre leaders although financial problems really make me think how to be a better owner which is not easy as neither of us have a big experience in this field. But the centre is not your primary job. Both you and Amalia work in different places. How do you combine it? Amalia works in the Kefiap centre (Centre for people with disabilities) and I am a physiotherapist. We both get very tired, but we are both really fond of our work here and enjoy it a lot. As part of your staff members, you host K.A.NE volunteers. How did this cooperation come up? How you learned about the organization and decided to work together? K.A.NE has been providing volunteers form different parts of the world in the other horse centre, the one Amalia worked before it closed, for couple of years so we already had the base and know how it works. In general, K.A.NE volunteers are known in Kalamata and it’s nothing new for its citizens. Whatever is happening in the city, they are there, so whenever you have an idea or want to cooperate, you contact with them. So, as I said, we had previous contact with volunteers and when we opened our centre, K.A.NE was more than happy to help us and they have been providing us volunteers for 3 years now. What other services you provide at this moment? At this point, beside horse therapy of course, we have an occupational therapy room, speech therapy, physiotherapy and a psychology room.

54

Can you tell me more about beginning of the place? You had to learn everything from the beginning – how to manage a horse, how to train them, how to lead the horse therapy… Our first horse came with the trainer, so we had no clue what to expect... We found a trainer to teach us everything about horses from the very beginning. The trainer knew about a good horse for sale and asked us if we want it. We blindly bought the horse trusting the guy and it turns out a very good choice. So Melia was our first horse and we learned everything on her. Generally, we are learning everything by trials and mistakes. At this point I believe we are better at managing horses and training them than other horse owners in Kalamata… and maybe Greece. We are doing everything on our own including hoofs, helth treating, training, feeding etc. etc. What about other two horses? What is their history? Pulsar, our second horse, we officially rescued. He was an old race horse, severely abused and considered a “dead horse”. There was a stable that didn’t know what to do with him deciding to get him to butcher and so he got into the Horse Rescue Association from where we took him. Here, he gained is life and piece back. Currently we use him as our primary horse. Second one, Simoun, we unofficially rescued from the person that wasn’t feeding him and generally abused him. One of our patient told us about this horse near her village, we came there and took him. At this moment he is still being trained and slowly slowly we will start to use him in therapies, as we want to make him the primary therapy horse. What is the future for Ipposchesi? In some months, we are opening another place that will host some of our services. It’s a big plan but we are hoping it will be better to have a different, bigger space and it will be in the center of Kalamata, therefore more appealing to clients. 55

Are you happy to work here? Yes, I’m very happy. Working with children is very nice and Amalia is a very inspiring therapist, you can see really whole innovative... It’s really hard to work with children, it’s not the same like with adults, wo will tell you what the problem is, there are 3 ways ti fix it, let’s do it. With children you have to be really well informed from quite wide spectrum of functions that will interfere with the way to fix things, like, there is a problem with children motion when, in reality, it’s the problem in their emotion, or not understanding the right and left or not controlling their impulse. If you take a health specialist, probably he won’t write them all down in 10 minutes, we will point just this or that as a problem. When you grow, it’s not like you are lacking ability to move your hand, it’s not only that. If you don’t move your hand, you don’t get all information, you don’t learn how to react to certain actions, you lack of other: mental, social skills… all of the basic thing how to be a human are damaged by anything. If you are born blind, you do not become an adult, who can’t see, you are an adult that does not understand basic things. It’s very complex… The thing is that with Amalia, for example if you would ask other therapists, they see a child unable to se “I want this, I want that” and hit another child, they would tell you, that this is hyperactivity and behaviorise the child but they will not look for a deeper problem. Amalia knows how to look for them from all possibly damages skills and, for example, this case one happened and it turned out, that the child had a speech disorder, so this child couldn’t communicate is a right way and his social skills were damaged. Why horse therapy? You were forced? *laughingly* Yes! Amalia can be very persuasive. And why you decided to become a physiotherapist? You wouldn’t believe. It was an accident. I wanted to become an engineer and so when I was choosing my university I applied wherever I could and after the big big whole of “engineer”, I put “physiotherapist” as it sounded nice… Guess where I got in… But it turned out to be a good thing for me and my personality, especially when working with adults.

The shrinking world of politics brings changes every day into people's lives, sadly to say Middle East suffers a lot. Victims of the modern disaster are innocent children, separated families, devoided of peace and basic leaving conditions. However Kalamata, Greece are not indifferent to the issue. Since 4 June the Anti War week took place with the purpose of raising awareness to the problem. Together with Kentro Neon Kalamata Team and ACT volunteers we took attention of casually walking locals and guests. Children together with parents made paper doves, the well-known symbol of peace. Activities covering humans rights, refugee crisis documentary screened in the train park, photos from hot spots refuge camps, open discussions after. Frankly speaking, now I perceive it more consciously. And can't stand aside. It's not the deal to happen overnight, yet with support of ACT volunteers and local citizens we might make somebody's life better. Stay tuned!

future event kalamata Street festival The next 26th of July, the 11th edition of the Street Festival in Kalamata will begin. For 4 days, the streets of the city will be invaded by artists of all kinds : painters, actors, players, dancers, skaters, etc. to celebrate the free artistic expression ! Art lovers will have the opportunity to express their talents through the many creative and fun activities for young and old that professional artists will offer.

What is exactly the Kalamata Street Festival ? The Street festival was set up in 2009 with local community at his heart. It was created to provide young people with a space to enjoy street activities and express themselves creatively. It worked as a collective festival that people were encouraged to

contribute,

participate

in

volunteer together.

and From

the beginning it worked as a collaboration

between

many

people and organisations. It was 100% voluntary, for the artists and performers too.

61

The festival has two goals : 1) The use and enhancement of public spaces of the city using activities that strengthen social cohesion and contribute to the cultural development of the area ; in other words using art to combat many social problems (racism, discrimination, prejudices, etc.). 2) To develop the creativity of the participants and offer them space to express themselves freely utilizing their skills and interests

Good atmosphere Like any good festival, it will be colourful and full of emotion. People will be in a good mood and openminded. Some will have a crush on certain artists, others will only appreciate the festival as a whole. Whatever it is, Kalamata will celebrate the summer 2018 in an atmosphere of conviviality and solidarity to the rhythms of concerts, shows and laughs.
