Who are we

Neda

6

Hi, I’m Neda and I come from Montenegro. Activism has been my passion since high school days so I’m thrilled because of the idea of working at the K.A.NE’s office and help to create more opportunities for young people. Some of my other passions are traveling, dancing and good music and I hope I’ll get the chance to nurture all of them in the following 9 months.

Marine Bonjour! My name is Marine, I’m 28 years old and coming from France. After studying Business Administration, working in Marketing and travelling the world, I will now stay in Kalamata for 10 months, working at the office of K.A.NE. I decided to volunteer here to get to know the functioning of an nonprofit organisation and to set up my own European Projects! During my free time I like to play volleyball, go diving or read fiction books. This year, you also gonna find me at the German language workshop.

ivan

Who am I? A human being, or, an evolved animal? It's really hard to give an explanation by using only words. So, I'll prefer to let my actions speak louder than my words. But you know what? I'm Passionate about Life and Nature. I spend a lot of time studying human behavior, what is a sort of a hobby for me. My biggest motivation is to learn from life and make my eyes see wider. I decided to quit my job, so I could catch the opportunity to experience something unique in Greece.

elodie Bonjour ! My name is Elodie. I come from France. I’m social worker educator since 2014. I’m in Kalamata for 6 months. I’m volunteer in a dog shelter and also, in a therapeutic horse-riding. I’ve decided to do this SVE for discover a new country and news cultures, acquire news skills, share my knowledges, to improve my english, meet other volunteers from other countries.

7

niek I am Niek, I'm 30 years old. From a small town in the Netherlands called Lunteren. I will be a volunteer for 12 months here, in Kalamata. In my freetime, I like to create, read good book or scientific article (psychology, philosophy, history etc), or watch good art-house movie. Sometimes I like to make photographs.

anna Barev! I am Anna from Armenia. Honestly, in 28 years of life, this is my first time abroad in Europe. I am going to stay 8 months here in Kalamata and it is a long time for me to discover everything in Greece: live, love, experience new emotions, meet new people, create new stories, explore new streets. This is a great way and opportunity to get to know me, myself, to discover something new in and outside. After this project, I am going to make a short movie or a video about my story, my EVS, my vision, dreams and goals.

Julien My name is Julien. I am from France near to Lille. I am 24 years. I love the nature and the permaculture, that’s why I have a garden in my city in permaculture since 2years already. I stay in Kalamata for 10 months and I am working in the farm. It’s my second mission of volunteering after Armenia. I love meet a new peoples and learn a new languages. I hope after my mission I will speak greek well and I will have like a second family.

This year, I decided not to take any new year’s resolution from January the first. But I have seasonal resolution for 2018/2019, for my time in Kalamata. These include return to sport, learn how to speak Greek, and find out what I want to do in my life.

17

My Bad Habit One of my bad habits is… eat a lot of chocolate!! I love it! By the way, the breakfast is my favourite meal. I eat bread with spread and chocolate powder with milk !(I kept my child’s soul!). My favourite is chocolate praline. Fortunately for me, I physically spend myself in my personal project.

Elodie Time management is a thing in my life! I have to admit it is my bad habit to take it easy with time. It’s gives me the illusion freedom.

Niek

I don’t get attached to people.

Julien 18

Hi guys, I am not sure my bad habit is interesting for you, but I often hick. And the bad thing is not about this, the point is I am pretty much lazy to go to drink some water or keep air and do not breath seven seconds for solving issue. So if you are with me in the same place and I am starting to hick again, sorry for annoying!

Anna

Procrastination. I’m trying to work on it, but I it’s been a bad habit since such a long time, I think it’s part of my character. So I adapted and now I always put myself some deadline or type of pressure in order to achieve something, otherwise it’s just gonna be “tomorrow…”.

Marine 19

Hitting snooze button too many times in the morning. I would like to start waking up a bit earlier so I can enjoy the mornings.

Neda Being an asshole! Does it count? Even though, I don’t consider it as a bad habit, I’m not proud of being one. I understand that it’s my self-defense mechanism. Yeah… And... I sincerely want to believe I just haven’t meet those few good and kind human beings who would try to understand me and my reasons behind... instead of going straight into judgement and rejection...

My Resolution for my 30 years The year 2019 is a special year in my life because I will celebrate my 30th birthday. Moreover, it’s a year full of new personal projects. With this new projects, there are some news resolutions. Sport I want to register in a volleyball team. 5 years ago I played in a volleyball team. I played in one mixed team (with women and men). I like being part of a team, have fun and do sport. This team spirit has served me a lot for my life, studies … Work I’m social worker educator for disabled persons. When I will come back in France, I want to find a stable job. A job where I can accomplish my goals calmly without imposing a lot of stress like before.I would like to work in therapeutic center with animals for disabled persons. Hobby Here in Greece, I discovered the salsa lessons. I want to continue in France. This activity brings me a lot of well-being. I’m more relaxed. My mind is elsewhere and I only concentrate on the music and on the dance steps.

26

Continue to take care about my friends and my family The relationship with friends and family is important. They surround me, they support me. We are caring between us. I help my grandmoms in activities such as driving them to medical appointment, taking time to go to the supermarket with them, etc

photo from Elodie’s sister’s birthday My biggest resolution for the coming year is to celebrate with my friends and my family my 30 years! A party with music, food and good waves!

Thank You for my sins by Ivan Doer NOTE: I highly recommend putting on a music track (A Cerulean State - The Warmth I Searched For), when you’re going to read this. Each one of us got something to dream about. And I truly consider that dreams are driving us forward when the lack of motivation hits our life. However, will it be correct to assume that a change of calendar will mysteriously increase the chance of our resolutions becoming real?

Well, I think everybody’s answer will be based on their personal believes and views on life. But, what if I tell you that any sort of resolution you make, New Year’s one or any other – are all the same of kind? The same words to feed yourself in a hope of a miracle… But New Year ain’t not a miracle! 28

No, it doesn’t work that way. It’s a modern bedtime story. In reality, if you want to achieve something you will start working on your goals immediately. Giving a resolution is a waste of words, even if you said it to yourself! The truth behind is - people are making resolutions to self-motivate, what already suspects them in a lack of it.

Most people who succeed in their lives simply started one day. No words, no promises. Only pure action. We all are aware of the fact, that most of resolutions never becomes real. People simply feel themselves much more comfortable with self-made promise. If it’s comfortable, why then you should do more? That’s the basic ideology of majority of our kind.

Our future is created by our actions we commit today, not tomorrow! I don’t think it’s enough of a simple “wish” or “resolution” to make it real. That’s the problem. People think that making a resolution will give something, but no. Not until you will start working on it.

IvanDoer 29

The origin of new year’s resolutions This year, like many others before, you and millions of people around the world will make resolutions and promise themselves a lot of things in order to make their lives better. More exercise, more books to read, earlier mornings… But all of that after the holidays. Let’s first indulge in all of the festivities that tradition brings and later we’ll start. But since when are people making these promises to themselves? The tradition of newyear resolutions is far older than the establishment of the Christian festival or even the placing of the new year in the middle of winter.

The Babylonians were the first civilisation to leave records of new-year festivities, some 4,000 years ago. Their years were linked to agricultural seasons, with each beginning around the spring equinox. A 12-day festival to celebrate the renewal of life, known as Akitu, marked the beginning of the agrarian year. During Akitu people keen to curry favour with the gods would promise to repay their debts and to return borrowed objects. In a similar vein the ancient Egyptians would make sacrifices to Hapi, the god of the Nile, at the beginning of their year in July, a time when the Nile’s annual flood would usher in a particularly fertile period. In return for sacrifice and worship they might request good fortune, rich harvests and military successes.

30

So, whenever you feel like failing with one of your New Year resolutions, remember that humanity has been doing it for 4 milleniums and don’t be so hard on yourself.

New Year’s Resolution #1

32

Marine Kafer 33

The Great Dictator Speech Charlie Chaplin I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost….

34

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. ‌..

35

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

“A day without laughter is a day wasted”

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Timeless 36

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite! This speech is from 1940 but still accurate !! Charlie Chaplin’s final speech

Niek den Boer 37

My Resolution for 2019 Food Continue my vegetarian diet but also find alternatives on products that have palm oil or other ingredients that are harmful to both the human and the environment.

Sport This year was rich in travel (Serbia, Romania, Armenia, Georgia, Aktsakh, Cyprus, Greece, Republic-czech, Hungary ...) and also in work (demolition, construction, armor, plumber, accounting, handling ...) , which translates into a let go in sports. I didn’t have time to go to the gym. This year is the right one to get over it because I stay here for ten months and I do not have an loophole.

38

Life Continue to be more and more autonomous from society. Always buy second-hand clothes Make my soap / deodorant / Fragrance / handkerchief / toothpaste Construct a dry toilet Know how to sew Create my own medicines Learn the medicinal plants Learn about mushrooms in the forest

Julien Debusschere 39

Greece, my greek resolution! Kalimera! I am going to live half of year in Greece, it means my 2019 life resolution will be Greek. More than 1400 islands and 4 seas - I am going to learn how to swim! For me it is the first greek resolution that I should to do. In the year there are more than 250 sunny days are sunny and we can not go back home without nice sun tan.

I want to travel through ancient cities, feel the power of castles and nice views on the top, listen whisper of waterfalls and do not forget take photos with architectural statues that Greece is most popular for.

40

Dancing is the most important part for a good Greek resolution and for me. And more, this year I want to learn how to ride motorbike, bicycle!

What else I was planning for my Greek resolution? Hmmmm, Let’s see! Ahhhh yes! To eat a lot of olives, oranges, fetas, pitas, crepes, spend time at the beaches, travel, discover and why not - feel like goddess Athina in Hellada. Efharisto me!

Anna Khlghatyan 41

My sending organisation! Europa Dom Slavonski Brod is a non-governmental organization founded in September 1998 with the aim of promoting Croatia’s European integration processes and cultural, political and economic integration into Europe. One of the main reasons for the establishment of this European home is to promote and develop an understanding of the importance of European interdependence and cooperation, human rights protection, environmental preservation, natural and cultural heritage. It should be added to the intention to develop a culture of understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

The European Home has one hundred and fifty members. At the founding assembly, officials and governing bodies were elected: the Assembly, the Steering Board, the Presidency, the Supervisory Board, the Disciplinary Tribunal, the President and the Secretary. The structure and manner of management of the association are regulated by the statute. The Statute also established that the European Home operates in the territory of the Republic of Croatia and has the right to implement international projects.

42

The European House Slavonski Brod cooperates with elementary and high school students, students, young people and all others interested in contributing to the expansion of knowledge and the European dimension in education on youth education, creating a sense of personal responsibility for peace, human rights, preservation of the environment, natural and cultural heritage.

The European House Slavonski Brod accomplishes its goal of expanding its ideas not only directly to its members but also indirectly to all members of the community in which they live and work, cooperating with complementary organizations, embassies of EU member states, cultural international institutions, state institutions, city administration bodies and samouprave.

Interview with a local volunteer Chara Iliochari Can you introduce yourself a little bit to know about you? I am Chara and I enjoy to learn new things and meet new people.. I love dancing like if being drunk and playing Capoeira! I always look forward an interesting conversation, an adventurous trip and sitting in front of the fireplace or in front of the sea under the sun. And I could continue writing about things that I like endlessly!

How long you are working as a volunteer and what are you doing? This is my third year at the youth center and I am teaching capoeira, helping at the coordination and in general I support the youth center by any chance..

What is the difficult part in volunteerism for you? Hmm maybe the limited time... By the time that we are volunteers during our free time that is limited and precious!

Most nice memorable moments in your volunteerism? This year that I decided to take more initiatives is a very educative year... Last year I have a wonderful menti Yana and it was the first year that I started teaching capoeira.. The youth center always provides me memorable moments that each one is so special for me that I can’t distinguish one

46

Are you thinking about volunteer on abroad and if yes , which country and project would you like it to be? Yes of course I think about it. There are two options. Portugal and Ireland. The projects that I am interested in are about non formal education and sustainability.

What about you? The most lovely thing that you can do in Greece & enjoy it? You can do everything. You can go to do ski and the next day you can go for swimming at the sea. And by being in Greece you can enjoy the hospitality of the people. Be open to the people and you will discover amazing places and circumstances!

love to the trees!!:) This year, Earth day with the action #HugATreeWithPassion It is your country and culture, what is your favourite food, drink & place in Greece?

Thank You Anna Khlghatyan

I love lentils as soup, as salad, or with rice. That is very nutritious.. I like beer or homemade wine or raki. I love Crete. But if you want to visit a nearest place you can go at Kardamyli, especially before summer, because at summer is overcrowded. 47

Interview with an outgoing person Within this interview, you’ll get to know Ivan Doer, an extremely loud and positive guy.

Tell us a little of yourself? I can’t tell too much. However, here’s my name. It’s Ivan Doer. I came from Latvia. Born in early 90s. Meter eighty something tall… Love dogs and long night walks with interesting and soul-deep people. What is your general motivator on your life way? I guess, I desire to know more about the world I live in. You know, the existential questions and stuff. It motivates me for moving and improving myself. Why do I need to improve myself? Well, that’s quite simple. As more I want to learn and absorb, as wider my eyes should see and as wide my heart should feel. Do you like communication with other people? I believe by exploring other people, I will explore myself. And I receive an enormous pleasure of having a deep and spiritually high chat. Do you know what you can hold without ever touching it? A conversation. And this is the most unique tool any civilization could ever invent.

Is that true you often speak too loudly? Ask my flat mates! They know better than anyone else. But I’m not rejecting the fact I might be too loud, sometimes. Maybe it all comes from the fact I had lisping, what is a sort of speech defect. So, I wasn’t speaking loud at all. With a time, I learnt to be louder just to make people hear me from first attempt. I suppose the skill became a habit.

Are you an influencer? I think every one of us can have a little influence on somebody else. True, but it depends from everyone. So, am I a one? I would like to answer with loud “yes”. But everyone going to see it differently. Besides, there’s no truth. There are only opinions.

48

What do you think about Erasmus+? From my perspective, Erasmus+ is a great opportunity for youth to travel abroad and see the world the way it is. What is your project about? In few words. I am a Creative Media Designer. I create visual content, including videos and a little bit of graphic design. But honestly, I’m learning it in the same time. Especially the last one. How do you see your contribution within your project? Contribution is Loading… 404 ERROR… CONTRIBUTION HAS NOT BEEN FOUND, yet. Do you like coffee? Oh, yeah!! I like this drink as much as waves loves the sand on beach. I drink it every day. Trying not to overuse it, otherwise I can go wild. But on morning, a mug of self-made coffee sets up the right mode.

What do you dream about? I have many dreams floating in my mind. But I don’t want to share it all. I don’t like when people know about my dreams, or plans. Sometimes, I share. But mostly it stays private. Besides, I want to let my actions speak louder than my words. Capisci?
