Editorial Everything changes... well everybody knows that... As normal as it could be that changes occur, there are some changes that weren’t in your mind before. There are some changes which are a result of some beautiful consequences which are completely changing your life. And you are happy with your life but still you choose to make them... Especially the ones which are giving you a new role. A role which is totally far of what you were doing just a year ago. A new role with huge responsibility means a big commitment... and great happiness! Your only fear is if you are good enough for this change you chose. And if you can keep the old things you love, close to you. And I would like to be close to my 3 babies beside the change which is coming in my life. I would like to be able to be involved in K.A.NE., the Youth Centre of Kalamata and the Kalamata Street Festival. To see them growing more and helping people to change their lives (as they also did with mine...). I just hope that I will have the time when the new change comes... Even if everything runs smoothly in your life and you enjoy what you do, a pleasant change is always welcome!!! Choose the change which will make you happier and do not fear anything!!!

Interview with volunteer Hello can you introduce yourself for everyboy My name is Liliana Correia i am 29 years old and i come from Portugal. What country did you visit? I have been to England, Spain, France and of course Greece What do you likes and what do you dislikes? I like reading, spending time at the beach, going out with my friends, late nights dancing, summer festivals, lots of party! And i don’t like to cook, and I have a special fear/hate of............balloons! What was the best experience of your life? My first EVS project. I was in France for a month, doing some work in a castle, 45 minutes away from the nearest village. Being amongst nature, with little technology and a lot of time to socialize with the other volunteers/workers/youth camps changed my life in the most positive way.

What is your biggest dream? It would be travelling around the world, spending my life meeting new cultures, ways of thinking, languages........Live a nomad life What are your future plans? Our first Taratsa Party was fulfilled and it was AMAZING.It took place at the beautiful roof of the Youth Center on Friday 15th of May. The bar was on fire due to the TSIPOURITO cocktail and the summer sangria inspired by our creatful volunteers.Our music playlist was one of the most important factors that have helped us feel more free and have traveled us to an exotic beach bar with palm trees and on a golden sand. It started at 8 o’clock in the evening and we left the Y.C. and it lasted until 1 am. Of course the party continued at Kyttaro Music Bar. I feel sorry to let you know that if you haven’t managed to come to our party, you have missed a great night full of fun and laughter..You shouldn’t worry though, because that was not the last one.

Gay marriage in Germany In Germany there is still no complete equality for lesbians and gays. After the successful referendum in Ireland pressure is growing on Angela Merkel in the conservative party CDU to open the party for gay marriage. “The clear Yes in Ireland is a signal. In Germany, especially in our party, now something has to happen,” demanded the chairman of the Federation of lesbians and gay men in the CDU, Alexander Vogt. “I hope, Angela Merkel finally defies the blockers in the CDU.” The debate about gay marriages is on fire after the Voting in Ireland. In the CDU, the same-sex marriage is a sensitive issue. The conservative part is vehemently against full equality of homosexual couples. But there are also voices that insist on a change of course. But the population is in these topics often more further than politicians. Τα λεμε, Ομορφη Χώρα Μου Hey there! This is my last article for Lınk and I want to talk a little bit about my EVS and mostly about my feelings for Greece. I have been here for almost 9 months and I will miss every single moment of it. As a volunteer, in the beginning –actually for a pretty long time- I didn’t like my Project but now I love it. I love spending time at farm, I love working with Mirto. Being an EVS volunteer is one of the best opportunities to change themselves for young people. I am sure, each of us changed in a way. Me too… For me, it is a little bit bad change but it OK, I will survive. As a volunteer, I liked this country and the city. As a person, ehhh, I don’t really like the city but I am in love with this country, with these people, with this culture… Some of my friends can’t understand my feelings about Greece. And I can’t even explain perfectly. I just love… No reason… No explanation… And actually a lot of reason… A lot of explanations….

I love mythology and I am in the house of mythology… I love my culture and I am in exactly the same culture… I love every single thing about this country… I decided to go 2 months earlier because of some personal reasons but I know that will be difficult for me. In a way, easier, because I don’t have to go now. I choose to go now. It is not visa, it is not the end of project. It is my choice. Good or bad… Even though I find a job as soon as I arrive Turkey, I will regret… I am sure about that. But in the end I have to go, I have to leave my home… I call this country “home”… But I collected amazing memories here. I met amazing people. Last year, when I was in Xylokastro, I met my Greek family – Nadia, Anton, Katerina-. Here in Kalamata, I met my Ines, my Lolita, my Ece… I met my dear Vasiliki. I met Takis, Lukas, Mirto, Kostas… And other people that I remember… but if I mention all, this will never end….

“It’s their fault!” Capitalism. Crisis. Conflicts. Jews are blamed for almost everything. Antisemitism is one of the oldest and most persistent prejudices. Whether open and violently, or as a quiet opinion or attitude, it finds expression in everyday life including antisemitic graffiti on the streets or synagogue walls, desecration of Jewish cemeteries, strange comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany, and statements in politics and the media. On school grounds „You Jew“ can be heard as a swearword, in public debates financial investors and bankers are attacked as a „plague of locusts,“ an image reminiscent of biblical anti-Jewish stories. Even antisemitic conspiracy theories, like those concerning the attack on the World Trade Center, are popular. It is therefore not surprising that according to a study by the Pew Research Center in Washington DC from 2008, about one quarter of all Germans were found to be antisemitic. But this issue is not confined only to Germany – antisemitism exists in Europe, Arab countries and many other regions of the world. But what does antisemitism mean exactly? Antisemitism is the most common term for all forms of hostility against Jews. Historically, this hostility existed long before the advent of the term „antisemitism“: Jews have been perceived as a threat for a long time. Whether in ancient or medieval times, they have consistently been blamed for various perceived ills; their very existence seen as cause for re-

ligious, cultural and social problems. Antisemitism therefore describes different degrees of hostile attitudes against Jews. It operates with a variety of excluding prejudices and attributes that are ascribed to all Jews.You may have heard ideas of „the Jews“ as alleged parasites, as people assumed to be greedy and deceitful. But antisemitism not only stands for simple prejudices against Jews but also for a specific explanation of the way the world is arranged. In this world view Jews are held responsible for all the bad things happening in the world. This characteristic distinguishes antisemitism from other forms of racism: „foreigners“ are usually described as lazy and inferior. „The Jews“, on the other hand, are described as influential and powerful. They are not only bad and threatening but also superior to others, and therefore hated. Where does all that crap come from? Already at the beginning of Christianity a religiously motivated hatred against Jews arose: anti-Judaism. It helped Christians set themselves apart from Judaism, a religion that basically came to be equated with evil. In the Christian middle ages (5th to 15th century) this religiously motivated hatred spread further. It became accompanied by more and more anti-judaistic myths. Many stereotypes – for example of the rich and avaricious Jew – are left over from these times. Approximately two hundred years ago, with the beginning of the modern age, antisemitism changed significantly. Religious prejudices fused into economic, political, and cultural ones. This happened in a time of major social changes; upheavals and transformations, like the establish-

ment of capitalism, were not understood by many people and brought fear with them. Therefore, simple explanations were welcome. Allegedly, „the Jews“ were undermining the national culture, dominating politics, as well as ruling the economy. These attributes almost inevitably suggested that the „Jews“ were extraordinary powerful – so powerful they could rule the world. At the same time science was intensely involved in the construction of an „Aryan race“ and with it, racial antisemitism. Following the pseudo-scientific, biologistic race ideology of the 19th century, Jews were not treated as a cultural or a religious denomination but as a distinct „race“ with specific characteristics. On the saturday 23 May had been organised by volnteer in the Youth Center the Intercultural party. It was a nice moment were everybody could discover and learn interesting thing about the country of our volunteer from all around Europe through some games and quizzes. What do animals dream about? The Greek philosopher Aristoteles once wrote, on On Sleep and Sleeplessness: “Almost all other animals are clearly observed to partake in sleep, whether they are aquatic, aerial, or terrestrial.’’ But do other animals dream? On that the Greek philosopher also had an opinion. In The History of Animals, he wrote: “It would appear that not only do men dream, but horses also, and dogs, and oxen; aye, and sheep, and goats, and all viviparous quadrupeds; and dogs show their dreaming by barking in their sleep. We certainly can’t ask animals if they dream, but we can at least observe the evidence that they might. There are two ways in which scientists have gone about this almost impossible task. One is to look at their physical behaviour during the various phases of the sleep cycle. The second is to see whether their sleeping brains work similarly to our own sleeping brains. The story of how we managed to get into the minds of sleeping animals begins in the 1960s. Back then, reports began to appear in medical journals describing people acting out movements in their dreams. This was curious, because during so-called REM sleep (rapid eye movement), our muscles are usually paralysed.

Researchers realised that inducing a similar state in animals could allow them to find out how they dream. In 1965, French scientists Michel Jouvet and J F Delorme found that removing a part of the brainstem, called the pons, from a cat’s brain prevented it becoming paralysed when in REM. The researchers called the condition “REM without atonia” or REM-A. Instead of lying still, the cats walked around and behaved aggressively. This hinted they were dreaming of activities from their waking hours. And studies since have revealed similar behaviour. According to veterinary neurologist Adrian Morrison, who has written a review of this research, cats in REM-A will move their heads as if following stimuli. Some cats also show behaviour identical to predatory attacks, as if they were chasing mice in their dreams. Similar dream activity has been seen in dogs.

Some humans have been found to ‘act out’ their dreams too – if they suffer from a condition called REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder. “Punching, kicking, leaping, and running from the bed during attempted dream enactment are frequent manifestations and usually correlate with the reported imagery,” according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD). Injuries are common among these people and those sleeping with them, the ICSD adds. Physical movement is not the only way of peering into dreams, though. Researchers can now humanely peer into the electrical and chemical activities of brain cells in animals while they sleep. In 2007, MIT scientists Kenway Louise and Matthew Wilson recorded the activity of neurons in a part of the rat brain called the hippocampus, a structure known to be involved in the formation and encoding of memories. They first recorded the activity of those brain cells while the rats ran in their mazes. Then they looked at the activity of the very same neurons while they slept. Louise and Wilson discovered identical patterns of firing during running and during REM. In other words, it was as if the rats were running the maze in their minds while they were snoozing. The results were so clear that the researchers could infer the rats’ precise location within their mental dream mazes and map them to actual spots within the actual maze. University of Chicago biologists Amish Dave and Daniel Margoliash looked into the brains of zebra finches and discovered something similar.These birds are not born with the melodies of their songs hardwired into the brains; instead, they have to learn to sing their songs.

When they’re awake, the neurons in part of the finches’ forebrain called the robutus archistriatalis fire following their singing of particular notes. Researchers can determine which note was sung based on the firing patterns of those neurons. By piecing together the electrical patterns in those neurons over time, Dave and Margoliash can reconstruct the entire song from start to finish. Later, when the birds were asleep, Dave and Margoliash looked again at the electrical activity in that part of their brains. The firing of those neurons wasn’t entirely random. Instead, the neurons fired in order, as if the bird was audibly singing the song, note for note. It might be said that the zebra finches were practising their songs while they slumbered.
Does the behaviour of cats in science experiments actually qualify as dreaming? Do rats have any subjective awareness that they’re running their mazes in their minds while they nap? Do the songbirds realise that they’re singing in their sleep? These questions are as hard to answer as the question of consciousness. It’s tricky.

We humans do not usually realise we’re dreaming while we’re dreaming, but it becomes clear as soon as we wake up. Do zebra finches remember their dreams as dreams when they’re shaken out of their sleep? Can they distinguish the real world from the one in their dreams? We can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that the physiological and behavioural features of dreaming in humans have now been observed in cats, rats, birds, and other animals. Yet what it’s actually like to experience a dream if you’re not human remains a mystery.

PREPARATION: Cut the eggplant into cubes and lightly salt. Leave them to draw out excess water. Add the oil in a frying pan and saute the onion and garlic. Add the eggplant, tomato pulp, salt and pepper and cook for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the penne in salted boiling water and when cooked, toss the penne with the sauce. Add the basil and grated salted ricotta or diced mozzarella. With theYouth Centre opening again its doors to the public, for the 7th period, there are still some things, where we could use your help!!! For the beginning of the workshops, and throughout the year, the Youth Centre needs: * CHAIRS Strange as it may sound, the Youth Center is in need of chairs! As the Youth Centre acquires more and more members, and the use of the chairs is extensive, our poor old chairs are breaking down. As it is, it is impossible to have all the chairs that the workshops need. If you have any chairs that you do not use, or you think that you can spare, you can bring them! * MARKERS for the white board As all of the language workshops make use of the white board, we consume approximately 3 markers per week! * Pens You can never have enough of those! * Computers Unfortunately, theYouth Centre at the moment has only 1 working (almost) computer to be used in the info-point. We need at least 1 more computer to be used in the dance workshops (for now we are using a borrowed one) and 1 more for the outside activities… *Volunteers As you may have noticed, most of the time in the Youth Centre, apart from our lovely volunteers from abroad, there is usually also a Greek speaking volunteer around, to give information about the workshops and help in case it is needed. What’s coming soon Event about the need of animal: On the Thursday 11th June will be organised in the Youth Center from 16h30 to 21h an event to talk about the need of the dog and think about how to provide to them all the thing they need through some activity and and discuss about sollution for all the stray dogs in Kalamata.
