About us I’m Lucia, I am 22 years old and I’m from Spain. I am a volunteer in the Youth Center. I consider myself a person enthusiastic, active and responsible, and I think that is very important to be open-minded and to have a positive attitude, that’s why I´m ready to live the experience and learn all I can. My name is Elisabet Romer Iversen and at the moment I am 19 years old. Together with my older brother and sister, I grew up on a biological farm in Norway with vegetable production, and some animals.

For the last 10 years I am working in the field of Non-formal education as a volunteer, youth worker and youth trainer. 6 years ago, I decided to create the Youth Centre of Kalamata, in order to initiate youth work in Kalamata and promote active citizenship as factor for change. Hi my name is Fotini Arapi and I am project manager in K.A.NE. organization and responsible, among other things, for all sending motilities (sending EVS volunteers, participants in training courses, interns, etc). Apart from my work in K.A.NE., I also volunteer in the Youth Centre of Kalamata, a volunteer initiative managed by a team of local volunteers. I am very proud of and I love the Youth Centre, its dynamic atmosphere, and most of all, its natural inclusiveness that allows everybody to feel “at home” there. See you around :-D

Hi, I’m Jelena Scepanovic, an EVS coordinator in KANE and the volunteer of the Youth center. I came from Montenegro 2012 as an EVS volunteer. I really liked the idea of the Youth center and the work that KANE does, so I decided to stay and be part of it. 6

I am executive director of the NGO Training Center “TARABA” in Montenegro which is the sister organisation of K.A.NE.

February at the Youth Centre 4.02 Love in Chekhov or Chekhov in Love? was a series of scenes revolving around the subject of love, directed by Callirhoe Velentza. Beautiful performances by participants of our Theatrical Workshop were watched by quite an audience, which seemed to appreciate them very much. We are all looking forward to another theatrical performance! 11.02 Tribal fusion belly dance was another Thursday’s seminar, which introduced us to the world of sexy, confident movements, made to shape the body and the mind. Accompanied by a lively music, participants were able to be a part of an interesting dance experience. After a final performance of full choreography smiles of satisfaction and enjoyment on people’s faces were endless! 18.02 Soap-making seminar this Thursday was a big hit. People kept coming, and soon we run out of chairs but it didn’t discourage anybody. The crowd could see how to make a homemade soap and in the end everybody could also take a sample, to see for themselves how it works for their bodies. 8


19.02 During our 80’s party our outfits and music playlist transferred us back to the previous century. We could dance to hits of Madonna, ABBA, Queen, Michael Jackson, A-ha, and many more well-known artists and bands. Even though the crowd wasn’t huge, we had our dosage of good time and fun! 25.02 During Decoupage seminar our participants were able to check out their manual skills while decorating boxes. Everyone seemed to be satisfied – they even refused to go for a cigarette break, because they wanted to keep on working! March Throughout March and April we will be renovating our beloved Youth Centre. We are going to repaint the walls and absolutely redecorate the Café. In connection to that, we kindly ask you for material support (paints, painting equipment, other things you think we might find useful). Also, even small money donations can help us make the Youth Centre more beautiful and simply a better place to be!

Celebrating kalamata’s day In Greece Orthodox religious is a big part of the culture. Indeed approximately 75% believe in god and the traditional event are very important.With the other volonteer we been part of the Kalamata’s day the 2nd February. For this occasion we went to the Church at 9 o’clock and we stayed after for discover the parade.A lot of people was in the chuch, all the bells was ringing. When I looked around everyone was very serious and had the faith. I felt the importance of this day for every one.During the parade all the priest walked with military and little girl who had flower and white dress.

It was a big gathering, all the street was full and for walk and follow the parade was very difficult. this kind of event are not usualy for me because in France, religious ceremony don’t exist and less and less and people believe in god. But it was impressive to participate and discover the tradition and all the atmosphere around had a unique character.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs http:// www.erasmus-en trepreneurs.eu/ is a cross-border exchange program which gives new or aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to learn from experienced entrepreneurs running small businesses in other Participating Countries. The exchange of experience takes place during a stay with the experienced entrepreneur, which helps the new entrepreneur ac13


quire the skills needed to run a small firm. The host benefits from fresh perspectives on his/her business and gets the opportunities to cooperate with foreign partners or learn about new markets. The stay is partially funded by the European Union. Whether you are a new or highly experienced entrepreneur, the program can offer strong added value to your business: possible benefits include exchange of knowledge and experience, networking opportunities across Europe, new commercial relations or markets abroad. In the program can participate new entrepreneurs, firmly planning to set 14

up their own business or have already started one within the last three years or experienced entrepreneurs who own or manage a Small or Medium-Sized Enterprise in one of the Participating Countries. What does volunteering means to you? Volunteering for me means investing your time and skills for the good of the community. Because of that I always enjoyed to participate in the volunteering activities both on local and international levels. Did you do EVS? Why you decided to do it?


I did my EVS in Galicia, in Spain, in an Association of people with intellectual disabilities ASPANAEX for 11 months. As I was working with international volunteers for a few years, I always wanted to do EVS myself. During long period I couldn’t do it because of work, but as I was aware that I’m approaching the age limit (30 years), I’ve decided to quit my job and do EVS. That was definitely the best decision of my life !!! There, I learned a lot. I opened my mind for a new ideas, I worked with another group of people with disabilities, I’ve learned a language, discovered

completely new and for me completely unknown culture and after university period I had the opportunity to share the flat with a bigger group of people which are foreigners. My EVS was a year full of experience... To whom would you recommend to do EVS? To everybody, because I think that EVS is providing a lot of opportunities which all should grab for personal development. It’s amazing and unique opportunity that definitely all should live.

Recipe: Galette des rois This pastry is a French dessert usually eaten around the Epiphany, on the 6th of January. As this day is not a holiday in France, we have it on the first Sunday of the year and after. We actually eat many of them, with our family, with our friends, at work or at school... Inside there is a tiny porcelain figurine hidden that we call “fève”, and whoever gets it is crowned king or queen for the day. Ingredients: – 100g almond powder – 75g sugar – 1 egg – 50g soft butter – a few drops of bitter almond essence – 1 yolk – 1 fève – 2 puff pastries

Puff Pastry: – 500g flour – 250g butter – 30cL lukewarm water – 2 tablespoon of sugar Mix the sugar with the water and knead the flour with this mix. Let it rest 30min in the fridge and take the butter out of the fridge so that it’s a little soft. Spread flour on your working surface and roll your dough in a circle. Cut the butter in little cubes, put them in the middle of the circle and fold the edges of your dough over them in 4 steps (up, down, left, right), then let it rest 10min.

Roll the dough again in a rectangular shape, and fold it in 3. Put it upside down then roll it again as a rectangle, fold it in 3 and let it rest 20min. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Repeat the whole previous step twice again, and it’s ready! This was for only one puff pastry and here you will need 2 of them (be brave). Of course if you lack time you can buy them at the supermarket ready to use. So now for the galette! Put one of the puff pastry in a pie pan and prick it regularly with a fork. Mix the almond powder, sugar, almond essence, butter and the egg together. Spread this mix over the puff pastry in the pie pan and drop the “fève” in it. Cover the pie with the second puff pastry and join the edges of the 2 pastries together so that it’s well closed.

You can draw patterns on the top pastry with the tip of a knife, then spread the yolk mixed with a little bit of water on it. Again, make a few tiny holes with a fork on the top dough and put it in the oven at 210°C for 30min.

Holmsbu in Hurum Hurum is a lovely peninsula located between the Oslofjord and the Drammensfjord, approxomately 60 km south-west from Oslo. The typical landscape is hills with deep green forests and valleys. The tallest mountain, Stikkvannskollen, reaches 361 meters over sealevel. Certain areas in the south of the peninsula are protected bacause of the very interesting geology and the special vegetation. Several findings from the stone age testify very ancient settlement, amongst them there are many gravhauger at the coastline. Today the settlement is mostly concentrated in the villages. Tofte 3 055, SĂŚtre 5 248, Klokkarstua 720, and Holmsbu 249. There are ofcourse a lot of people living outside the villages as well, and all the farms are spread between them. The last mentioned, Holmsbu, is what I call my village, eventhough I grew up on a farm located 2 km outside the center. This is a small fishermanvillage, with just one fisherman left. In the winter the local shop closes, and the only life you can find are frozen people with big coats walking their dogs, or waiting for the bus. When there is snow you see more people, because skiing is as important for norwegians, as relaxing and going out is for greeks. You can just imagine how full the skiing tracks are, if you compare it to the bars and cafes of Kalamata.

In the summer on the other hand, it is difficult to find a silent hour. All the campings, cabins, boats and the two hotels get filled up with tourists. The owners of the cabins are mostly norwegians from bigger cities that want to get away from the hustle, breathe the sea, the nature, and eat icecream in the famous kiosk by the harbour, Bryggekjøkkenet. On the campings you can find a lot of germans and dutsches as well as norwegians, some come just for a few days, and some come to stay all summer. We have two hotels, one of them is a quite famous Quality Spa which is a popular location for conferences and meetings, as well as a relaxing vacation. They have the sea, and thepool, excursions in boats, massage, tasty food, and a lot more (which I have no idea about, cause I would rather sleep in my barn). Just a few meters behind the hotel you can find a lovely wild forest with many hiking routes, also nice with bicycle or a horse. A few years ago the harbour of Holmsbu was expanded, so in the summer, when boats come from near and far, the size of the village looks almost the double. The size of one boat alone can be bigger than the local supermarket, eventhough it is a small supermarket, I am saying that those boats are overwhelming. We have four restaurants: Brdr. Jensen is where the cool kids hang, the food is modern, variated and the best vegetables come from the local biological farm, the waiters are handsome and international, and the live concerts are mainly indie.

Juno is a pizzarestaurant, with the sign: ”the best pizza of the city”, which play football on a ”big” screen at every occasion. Privaten is the very typical restaurant which you find in all small villages, a lot of flowers and paintings of unknown artists, and concerts with local bands every night. The last one is Holmsbu Bad. A classy place with a perfect view over the harbour and the center. Here you can enjoy several dishes with ingridients from local producers, like the farm of my family. It is often rented for weddings, comfirmations and other big celebrations. Eventhough it counts more as a fastfoodplace than a restaurant, Bryggekjøkkenet is the most loved of all. They make the best burgers, pizzas, fish’n chips, salads, but most of all ICECREAM!! Enjoy the best softice you can imagine with the best toppings you can imagine, and try to decide which to choose amongst more than 35 flavours of italian and norwegianicecreams. Just two km out of the village you can find a nine hole golf course, at Myhrene Gård. They also offer croquet, or just an amazing norwegian waffle with strawberry jam and sourcream, mostly made by the neighbourgirl working there through the season. The closest neighbour is a biological farm, Bergsmyrene, where I grew up. We produce all kinds of vegetables and sell to the local restaurants, as well as the non-locals, in Oslo and so on. We also have a farm shop which is ”self-service”( as long as you dont need any help). In this shop we sell the vegetables ofcourse, our own eggs, honey from a local producer, and 100% extra virgin biological olive oil from the area of Kalamata, Greece. So we basically have it all. 22


If you want to challenge your condition, you should try one of the two mountains we have. You can walk over Haraldsfjellet, starting from the golf course, and ending up by the sea, pr the pther way around. Knivsfjellet can also be walked from both sides, depends if you like to walk uphill or downhill. The view is unforgetable, with sight almost to Denmark, and the little pond makes the whole experience even more magical. If you are more into ”straight forward”, the coastpath is a good choice. It goes all the way around the peninsula, always by the sea, so if you like you can take a bath, a picnic on the beach, or just a small break to enjoy the panorama in silence. The valley ”Holtnesdalen”ends close to Holmsbu and is one of the most beautiful hiking paths. The vegetation is completely different from the rest of the peninsula, with tall leaftrees, and plants that most remind of the rainforest. It is a very special and magical place which I highly recommend. The small fishermanvillage also has worldknown art from three painters that used to live there, Henrik Sørensen, Oluf Wold Torne and Torvald Erichsen. Their paintings are collected in a troll-like gallery in the forest which can only be visitied by walking a narrow path through the dark pinetrees. The local church is also adorned by Henrik Sørensen. Through the days the beaches are filled with happy freckled children, playing and making sandcakes, and in the evenings you can see teenagers and young people sitting by bondfires drinking beer, laughing and playing music. It is a paradise, open only at summertime.
