About us
I’m Lucia, I am 22 years old and I’m from Spain. I am a volunteer in the Youth Center. I consider myself a person enthusiastic, active and responsible, and I think that is very important to be open-minded and to have a positive attitude, that’s why I´m ready to live the experience and learn all I can. Hi everyone ! My name is Anna, I’m 21 and I come from France. I’m an engineering student in Marseille and I took a break from school to come here in Kalamata. I’m working in the KEFIAP Center and in the therapeutic horse-riding project, so I like horse-riding of course but also football and cinema. Hi, my name is Maciek. I’m 25 and I come from Poland. I like music, movies and spend time with people who have a dark sense of humor. If you like the same things, you can find me around.

Hello, my name is Marie-Noëlle, I’m 24 years old and I’m from Lille in France. After my studies and after to created an artistic association, I wanted discover new places, another cultures and meet people. That’s why I decided to do an EVS in Kalamata, Greece where I’m Volunteer in the Youth Center. Also, my project is to make videos and I hope create an exhibition with local artist Geiá sou ! I am Marjolaine, 27y/o from France (Marseille). I am a globetrotter and really curious about Greece so I will be ready fo any trips around ! Hello, I am Filaretos Vourkos. For the last 10 years I am working in the field of Non-formal education as a volunteer, youth worker and youth trainer. 6 years ago, I decided to create the Youth Centre of Kalamata, in order to initiate youth work in Kalamata and promote active citizenship as factor for change.
Hi my name is Fotini Arapi and I am project manager in K.A.NE. organization and responsible, among other things, for all sending motilities (sending EVS volunteers, participants in training courses, interns, etc). Apart from my work in K.A.NE., I also volunteer in the Youth Centre of Kalamata, a volunteer initiative managed by a team of local volunteers. I am very proud of and I love the Youth Centre, its dynamic atmosphere, and most of all, its natural inclusiveness that allows everybody to feel “at home” there. See you around :-D

Hi, I’m Jelena Scepanovic, an EVS coordinator in KANE and the volunteer of the Youth center. I came from Montenegro 2012 as an EVS volunteer. I really liked the idea of the Youth center and the work that KANE does, so I decided to stay and be part of it.

Hi there; I’m Armagan, a new EVS volunteer of K.A.NE from Turkey, let me introduce myself in a summary. I was born in Diyarbakır-Turkey in December 1987, lived there until 18 years old, then I got the opportunity to study university in Izmir-TR. I studied the labour economics and industrial relations’ bachelor’s degree. Meanwhile I worked in the airport as a passenger service agent for a while, then during my last year I worked for customer relations centre of Turkish Airlines. When I could finally graduate, I found the chance to move and work in Athens-Greece for more than a year. Now as I’m happy to be a part of EVS team of KANE. I’ll be here for a year. I’m looking forward to know you better and work with you all.
Hello to everyone! I’ve just took my university degree in Psycology, I love talking and discovering people’s worlds and I hope this is going to be a great experience to do it. I like living in contact with nature and music as well, I’m a singer and I love swing music simply because it makes you happily dancing without realizing it, and this is how everyone should take life in general: smiling, being optimistic and appreciating everything that life gives you, the bad days too! I truly believe that travelling and being open-minded with other cultures is the best way to learn more things and to grow up with ourselves.

Hello my name is Oskar Schrattenecker, I am 18 years old and from Linz/Austria. I am doing Evs in KalamataThe main reason for me to do Evs was because i didn Ě t know what I wanted to do in my future so hopefully I get orientation during my Evs. Also since first of January in Austria you can do a long term Evs instead of your military service, so this was a nice opportunity. I started my Evs one month ago on 18. of April and my project lasts for one year, I work in the Youth center of Kalamata. Me and 6 other Volunteers live in an apartment near the Youth center, The first month was really nice, my roommates and colleagues were really friendly to me, they gave me a warm welcoming. In the first month I experienced very much, since it was Easter in Greece we had a few days off and I did many Activities with my Roommates. We were at a Farm helping to renovate it, we made a boat trip and of course we were at the Beach. Right now all the enthusiasm of the first impression kinda stopped and everyday life began, and I really enjoy it.

Easter in Warsaw, Poland
Easter is the second most celebrated and so - the second most important catholic holiday in Poland, loosing in this popularity and importance contest only with Christmas. Preparations to Easter are connected with a tradition of painting eggs and making special palms for the celebration of Palm Sunday, which opens the Great Week. However, these days most people just search for the most beautiful palm and buy it, or just buy a simple one right before the celebrations. The believers take palms to church one week before actual Easter in commemoration of biblical story of Jesus arriving to Jerusalem.

Most families start the celebrations connected to Easter on the Great Saturday, when they prepare a basket with foods that are supposed to be sprinkled with holy water at church. The traditional basket called Święconka usually contains eggs, bread, sausage, and salt. Only after bringing the food to church, the fast that starts on the Great Friday is over. On Easter Sunday the families gather for a celebratory dinner, which starts with sharing the food from the basket and giving each other best wishes. On the table we can usually find a lot of different types of eggs, hams and other meats, salads, breads, and - depending on a family - usually many other foods. After eating people just sit around the table and talk or choose to go for a walk, so not to be around food all the day.

Easter lunch/dinner is nothing specific in Warsaw. You can see roasted turkey, duck, goose, but also simple pork chops or minced meat cutlets, accompanied by salads, potatoes, rice and so on. The most unitary along all the households is the dessert time. You can eat traditional Mazurek or yeast Babka cake almost everywhere. As you can see, Easter Sunday in Warsaw is mostly eating and spending time with one’s family.

Easter Monday is called the Wet Monday because it’s connected to an old tradition of boys pouring water on unmarried girls they like. However, these days it’s mostly children running around with buckets of water and pouring it on each other, which is accompanied by laud screams, as water is usually ice-cold. Monday is a day when we visit our further family members and continue eating and sitting around the table, enjoying the time together. And so the easter-time ends... Note: the ways of celebrating Easter in Poland are different in cities and villages, but also vary a lot from region to region, and... from family to family. Therefore, described ways shouldn’t be generalized for the whole country.

Painting at Agroktima Marini Agroktima Marini is a cultural and agricultural organisation where some of us went for 3 days to help them prepare their big opening. The place seems lost in the mountains, like a little paradise full of treehouses, where you can admire the sunset on the sea only hearing dogs and ducks from what seems to be an ancient amphitheatre but that was actually built 5 years ago. In exchange for some painting and cleaning, we got to stay there for 2 nights with our meals prepared in a wood oven by our host Sotiris, who’s an amazing cook, and enjoy the peace and quiet. Even if to this day we still find traces of paint on our skin or in our hair that we didn’t see before, this was an awesome experience.

EVS E-Structures is using internet media to promote and support idea of European Volunteer Service(EVS). My role in Kalamata is to creating newsletter, develop websites, logos and posters(of events, workshops, competitions, parties in our oraganization).

Greek adventure : boat, friends, fun and… STORM The Friday 29 of April start the easter week end in Kalamata. Day off oblige we decided to organize a trip. Some day before Bojana proposed a boat trip for go to Oitylo. With the others volunteers. We was of course very exciting by this trip because common to do boat in Greece is a dream come true when you come from an other countrie. We left of Kalamata around 8 o’clock the morning, the weather was amazing and we start to enjoy the moment together and have fun. On my own, I didn’t ate before leave and even if I never been sick on a boat, I started to be a little dizzy and I took one pils. The consequences was to sleep almost immediatly after. But whatever the weather was so good, it was not a problem to sleep outside and enjoy the sun. When I woke up after this nap the most of the people was talking or resting. And I started to talk with some volunteers but I think the pills was very strong because I was really tyred. So I decide to take some rest and sun at the front of the boat inside of the life boat because with the lifebuoy it was very confortable. But sometimes later the weather started to change. The blue sky became cloudy and grey, a big wind started and the sail was open… Conséquences : I was alone in the front of the boat, the sailors rocked a lot the waves came in my face, I was totaly wet and I started to have very cold. It was of course very scary. But at the same moment it was like to go for a ride on the merry-go-round and it was

funny with of course a big shot of adrenaline. But anyway I was in the life boat maybe the most seruty place in the boat and just watch behind me and see Magda laughing beause I was totaly wet and she told me my face was amazing : A mix between laugh and scared maked me don’t worried. Finaly the weather became again sunny and I had the possiblity to come back inside of the boat and drink some bear and ouzo and laughing about this big adventure. Then we had the opportunity to swim in the sea, to stop the boat for go to eat something. At the end of the day we watched the sunset and just we enjoy this amazing moment to be together on a sailor in Greece.
