New EVS
Hi there; I’m Armagan, a new EVS volunteer of K.A.NE from Turkey, let me introduce myself in a summary. I was born in Diyarbakır-Turkey in December 1987, lived there until 18 years old, then I got the opportunity to study university in Izmir-TR. I studied the labour economics and industrial relations’ bachelor’s degree. Meanwhile I worked in the airport as a passenger service agent for a while, then during my last year I worked for customer relations centre of Turkish Airlines. When I could finally graduate, I found the chance to move and work in Athens-Greece for more than a year. Now as I’m happy to be a part of EVS team of KANE. I’ll be here for a year. I’m looking forward to know you better and work with you all.
Hello to everyone! I’ve just took my university degree in Psycology, I love talking and discovering people’s worlds and I hope this is going to be a great experience to do it. I like living in contact with nature and music as well, I’m a singer and I love swing music simply because it makes you happily dancing without realizing it, and this is how everyone should take life in general: smiling, being optimistic and appreciating everything that life gives you, the bad days too! I truly believe that travelling and being open-minded with other cultures is the best way to learn more things and to grow up with ourselves.

EVS’s
Hello my name is Oskar Schrattenecker, I am 18 years old and from Linz/Austria. I am doing Evs in KalamataThe main reason for me to do Evs was because i didn Ě t know what I wanted to do in my future so hopefully I get orientation during my Evs. Also since first of January in Austria you can do a long term Evs instead of your military service, so this was a nice opportunity. I started my Evs one month ago on 18. of April and my project lasts for one year, I work in the Youth center of Kalamata. Me and 6 other Volunteers live in an apartment near the Youth center, The first month was really nice, my roommates and colleagues were really friendly to me, they gave me a warm welcoming. In the first month I experienced very much, since it was Easter in Greece we had a few days off and I did many Activities with my Roommates. We were at a Farm helping to renovate it, we made a boat trip and of course we were at the Beach. Right now all the enthusiasm of the first impression kinda stopped and everyday life began, and I really enjoy it.

For the last 10 years I am working in the field of Non-formal education as a volunteer, youth worker and youth trainer. 6 years ago, I decided to create the Youth Centre of Kalamata, in order to initiate youth work in Kalamata and promote active citizenship as factor for change.
Hi my name is Fotini Arapi and I am project manager in K.A.NE. organization and responsible, among other things, for all sending motilities (sending EVS volunteers, participants in training courses, interns, etc). Apart from my work in K.A.NE., I also volunteer in the Youth Centre of Kalamata, a volunteer initiative managed by a team of local volunteers. I am very proud of and I love the Youth Centre, its dynamic atmosphere, and most of all, its natural inclusiveness that allows everybody to feel “at home” there. See you around :-D

Interview Magda vs. Ruya
How did you decide to do the EVS? It started with my participation in a youth action programme in Serbia. It was only one-week project about the development of intercultural dialog in Balcan countries, but the time I spent there, creating something with people sharing the same ideas, felt really good. Although I already worked with multinational group on the ship, this experience was different because I had a chance to work with people who had similar views as I do, we had many things 10
in common. It was really a quality time with them. I found that I can be much more creative among people with ideas similar to mine. After the project the feeling that I want to do it again stayed with me. After a couple of months I realized that there is not much more time left to do EVS because of my age, so I just resigned from my job and focused on applying to EVS opportunities. After a short time KANE accepted me, and as their project seemed exciting to me – I ended up here, at the Youth Centre.

Recipe: Karniyarik A recipe for a delicious traditional main meal from Turkey: Karniyarik Before I start telling about the details of the recipe, I’d liked to give you some basic information about this food. Karniyarik literally means (it’s) belly split in Turkish language. It’s not a type of food that you can find easily in every Turkish kebab or döner restaurants, bistros or small fastfood takeaway places. Though it’s cooked very commonly as a homemade meal in most of the houses in Turkey, especially as one of the main courses when some important guests are invited for a dinner. Apart from all these, it may seem a bit complicated and tiring to cook it in the beginning, but once you start the first steps, you’ll see that it’s not that difficult. It’s worth to spend a little time to have a nice meal. Last but not least: I’ve heard from some of my Greek friends that it’s very similar to Greek Papoutsakia, it might be similar, except the cooking procedure and the melted cheese on the top.
Ingredients for 4 people • 6-8 dark purple small to medium aubergines • 2 tablespoons olive oil, black pepper and a pinch of salt(in order to bake aubergines in advance) For the inside meat sauce: • 300 grams of ground(minced) beef, • 2-3 adet tomatoes, • 2 onions, • Half bunch of parsley, • Vegetable/olive oil, • 3 green peppers, • Black pepper and salt. For the last topping sauce: • 400 ml of warm water, • 2 tablespoon of tomato paste(concentrated puree) • A pinch of salt(or as much as you wish) For the final touch • Sliced tomato and green pepper
14
If you prepared all of these materials and ready to bake and cook, let’s begin! First, you’ll peel off the aubergines lenthways, stripey and leave the stalk intact. Cut deep splits lengthways without cutting through to the skin on the opposite sides. Meanwhile preheat the oven to 200 C / 390 F. In a large big bowl, leave the aubergines in salty water for about 15 minutes in order to avoid the possible bitter taste of them. Then dry them well with a piece of clean towel or kitchen paper. Mix 2 tablespoon of olive oil, salt and black pepper and oil the aubergines a bit thoroughly before you put in the oven for baking. Bake them about 15-20 minutes to get them softer.
Peel them off stripey
Oil up and bake them
Preparing the meat sauce
Chop up the onions and peppers quite thin, sauté them with a bit of olive oil until it gets softer, then add the ground beef and blend it slowly and cook it until all the moisture is absorbed. Then add the grated/chopped tomatoes, salt, black pepper and finely chopped parsley cook them until most of the juice is absorbed and the mixture gets thicker. 15
Take the aubergines out of the oven let them get warm a bit. With the help of a small knife and dessert spoon split in the middle of semi-baked aubergines gently, without tearing the skin, then fill in the gaps with the meat sauce. If you wanna make it look better, garnish the top with a slice of tomato and green pepper. Finally, mix the warm water, tomato paste/puree, salt and any spices you prefer in a sauce pan/pot and stir well and slowly pour the sauce on the filled aubergines that you already prepared on a baking tray. Bake it about 15-20 minutes in 200 C, until the peppers will be roasted well.
16
Tip: You’d better cook a nice rice ‘pilaff’ and tzatziki(Greek or Turkish, doesn’t matter) to accompany this yummy food “Karniyarik”(Belly Split) Bon Appetite/ Καλή όρεξη / Afiyet Olsun

Climb Up – Kalamata
Their philosophy Climb Up is made up by trained, experienced and skilled mountaineers, climbers and tour guides, who offer you the possibility to get to know the Greek countryside and the mountain up close, by unique experiences or by developing a firm basis of knowledge through training. Throughout the year, they offer a strictly selected range of activities regarding rock climbing and hiking, while during the winter they can take you to some of the most popular mountainous destinations of Greece, for single-day or multiple-day excursions. Their goal is to inspire you and impart knowledge and love of the mountain, always considering your safety and enjoyment. Head Of Climb Up - George Malamas George Malamas was born in Kalamata in 1981. His passion for the mountains begins early. He has been trained by the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering & Climbing and by the Hellenic Rescue Team. He dedicates himself to lifelong learning and he continues his studies for the mountain knowledge, as an instructor now, and also at University of Patra in History class. 20
He has climbed all of the greatest slopes of Greece. He has carved out and created more than 100 new climbing routes. He has also climbed the Himalayas, the Alps, the Dolomites, Caucasus, the Tatras, the Carpathians, on both rock and ice routes. For the past 7 years he has been the instructor in charge of climbing and hiking excursions for private schools, promoting the culture of climbing to children from the age of 5 and over. He simultaneously works at Costa Navarino as a tour guide and climbing field supervisor. He expresses his passion for volunteering at the ‘Hellenic Rescue Team’, where for the past 7 years he has been a member, an instructor, and a supporter. Explanation of different types of climbing activities There are many different activities described as climbing, hill walking and mountaineering. Many are outdoors activities whilst others take place on indoor climbing walls. Some activities are usually carried out with ropes to help manage the risks, whilst others, such as bouldering and hill walking, are invariably done without ropes. The main activities are: Rock climbing with ropes can be done indoors or outdoors and usually involves two people, but it can be done in a group. The person climbing is tied to a rope controlled by another person. Controlling the rope is called belaying and the person controlling the rope is the belayer. Trad (traditional) climbing is where the first climber (the ‘lead’) places their own protection on their way up the rock face and their partner (the ‘second’) removes the protection while they are ‘seconding’ the route. 21
Bouldering is a form of climbing usually practised on small rocks and boulders, or at indoor walls. As the climber doesn’t go very high it is often possible to jump back down. Boulderers usually use padded mats to jump down (or fall) onto to reduce impact on landing and to protect the ground from erosion. Bouldering routes are called boulder problems. Ice climbing involves climbing on snow or ice. It is most often done outdoors using ropes and protection systems similar to rock climbing. There are now some specialist indoor venues for this form of climbing. Specialist equipment required includes mountain boots, warm clothing, ice axes, crampons, harness and rope. Hill walking involves walking over mountainous terrain and venturing through exhilarating landscapes with fabulous views. Specialist skills needed include map reading, terrain judgment and navigation. Boots, warm and waterproof clothing are required as the weather in hills and mountains can be inclement and sometimes difficult to predict accurately. Mountaineering usually involves a combination of walking and scrambling as well as rock and ice climbing in mountainous areas. The BMC Winter Essentials DVD gives useful insights into aspects of hill walking and mountaineering. Mountaineering can be done in Scotland during the British winter and pretty much all year round in the Alps. The Himalayas is also a popular place for mountaineering, where there are still hundreds of unclimbed mountains.

My experience in the KE.Φ.Ι.ΑΠ. Centre It’s almost a month and a half since I started working in KE.Φ.Ι.ΑΠ. Centre, the lessons have just finished and I really want to share my feelings about my experience with them until now. First of all, I have to say that I have been doing volunteering for many years in Italy with autistic people (this is actually one of the reason that moved me to ask to KANE to put me in this specific project) and it is really interesting for me to discover how Greece faces this kind of topics, considering that it is a country that has such a different legislation about inclusive policies of people with fewer opportunities and disabilities as well. KE.Φ.Ι.ΑΠ. Is a place where people with different types of disabilities can go once they finish the “special schools” for people with special needs; you will not find there any children (most of them are indeed older than me) and you can easily realize that, in fact, most of the workshops are not considerable has have the purpose of facilitating their process of learning, socialization and inclusion. How do they do it? They handle many kinds of workshops and lessons that go from the physical activity to the theatrical sessions, trips, but also ceramics, cooking, music and drum workshops and besides they have a moment of socialization with the local community correlated with a newspaper managed all by themselves. Probably, for who is reading now, it won’t seems anything special, because cooking is something that we do everyday, most of these actions are part of our dailyroutine and we can easily do it; but it takes a completely different meaning when you realize 24
that there they are organized for people that generally wouldn’t have the abilities of doing something that for us is given for granted. Imagine to put, in a theatrical play, a person that doesnt know what empathy is or that doesn’t the correct functionality of the mirror neurons and to ask him to pretend to be a warrior that has to save a princess in order to marry her. Could you imagine to do it without the ability of putting yourself in the shoes of someone else? How would it work? I don’t know about you, but so did the group that I’ve been working with in these weeks: they played a fabulous version of “Erotocrito” with all the proudness of volunteers and families as well. I would like to talk more about this magical moment when the play finished and all of us couldn’t stop the excitement of the moment (“Yeah! it was a success even if it wasn’t neither in our farest dreams!!”) but I’m afraid that it would take the all magazine then, so I’ll simply try to summerize (as much as I can) my feelings and reflections about the all experience that I lived there in this period. Honestly, what I found at the KE.Φ.Ι.ΑΠ. Centre is a group of volunteers and workers that do their job with passion and professionality without giving anything for granted in the relationships that they have with their users and better again they never forget to use creativity in the way they decide to articulate their workshops. It might sounds strange but being creative is something really important in a job where you always have to deal with users characterized by stereotypies, mental retardation and/or physical deficits, because it allows you not to focus on the deficit of the person but to think and work on the potential skills that they might develop with the right attention to some specific aspects 25
of themselves: this opens a scenery that is completely far away from the idea that if, in 2016, a country still has these “special schools” it means that you are simply trying to “hide” the topic in new kinds of “ghetto”, as many people had told me before I started working in Greece; as a matter of fact, it can be interpreted as a way to put more attention on the real needs that the disable person can have and help them to develop their abilities depending on the real possibilities that they have, instead of simply putting them in “normal classes”, pretending that they care about “policies of inclusion” but not really organizing a special educative program for these students. I’m not saying that one approach is better than the other, (and neither that what I saw is the majority of the cases, but only my personal experience), what I’m meaning is simply that I 26
realized that they can both have positive aspects and also that, if they would be integrated with each others they could give really good feedbacks in the developmental processes of users but local community’s sensibility as well. In conclusion, I want to say that I feel really happy and grateful of having found such a challenging environment: the way how the people work is giving me a lot of ideas and motivation to integrate with my previous experience, I feel richer now and this is only the beginning…let’s see what I will learn in the next months! :)

My
most favorite place in the world
Since I am from austria, the country of mountain climbers and hikers, it is no big suprise I grew up with this kind of sport. And I love it, for me hiking is the best sport, not only that it is good for my body it is also good for my soul, when I hike up a mountain and see all the nature and the amazing view over the land, I get silence and peace in myself. I want to tell you about my favorit place in the world and it is connected to hiking. Every year since i can remember my family and I meet with some other families. We rent a big house in the mountains and we hike for an entire week, every morning we hike a different route. Since the other families which coma with us, have children in my age it was always a good time, and i connect alot of good times and memories with this house and this weeks. The house belongs to a farmer and he rents it to visitors so they have a place to stay during their visit. It is a old wooden farm house with alot of rooms. On one side of the house is a playground, and next to the playground is a field for the horses of the farmer. All together this house is my favorit place in the world. One day when i have my own family i want to do this tradition too.
