Volunteers My name is Anja and I find describing myself really awkward and Anja Hi! difficult especially because my personality is a product of a 25-years
long and complex story and is evolving every second of the day. At THAT moment I can say for myself that things that make my heart sing are: when random strangers are super nice to me, diving deep into symbolism or mythology of movies, experiencing the art of being ‘’here and now,’’ reading books and making different types of art (poetry, painting), music, being mommy to green plants and being sister to two dogs.
Celia
Hello! I am Celia, I come from Montpellier, a city in the south of France. Creative and volunteer I offer two months of my time to help a dog shelter association. Enthusiastic about learning every day through my work but also through new encounters and cultural sharing. So, I came to start my twentieth year in the Greek sun.
everybody! My name is Elisabetta, I’m a 22 years old itaElisabetta Hello lian girl who hates Italy and just wanted to escape for a little
bit from the ignorance and racism and homophobia and sexism typical of my country. I really have strong ideals about equality and respect towards people who are different from me and I love meeting new people and learn new things. I really enjoy music, singing and dancing even though I’m a very bad singer and dancer and I also love horses. I love being around them, I love riding them and I love taking care of them.
Lea
Hallo! :) My name is Lea and I am from Griesheim, a small town near Frankfurt. I am eighteen years old, just finished school and now I am going to spend an entire year here in Kalamata. I am volunteering in the Youth Centre and hopefully will hear many different stories from totally different people. I am fascinated by the art of literature, stars and other people and really enjoy sitting on the balcony with friends and enjoying unwinding music. I’m Lise, i’m from the south of france, i’m yo. I really love all Lise Hi, the animals and want to be an animal keeper as soon as possib-
le, so the work with the dogs in the shelter it’s just perfect for me. I love nature and discover new landscapes . Also meet new people and learn a lot of new things.

Lucas
Hi! My name is Lucas, I am 23 years old, and I come from France. Due to family problems, I had to take a break from my studies a few years ago and I hope to resume them after my little pearl in Greece... I am here to discover new people, maybe another culture and especially to clear my mind, I work at the dog shelter for 2 months or I hope to learn a lot from others and a lot about myself.
Marlene
Hey! I’m Marlene a.k.a. Karen, from Portugal! Being in a constant process of discovering myself, I would say that, most of all, I consider myself as a very empathetic person, who loves to try to understand others. This comes with a lot of curiosity and willingness to learn and discuss about our human nature and the physics and metaphysics of everything. I am also very adventurous and a true hungry for discovery! I really love to dance, sketch & paint, and have efficient sleep time. Oh, and I am working at KEFIAP!
Marta
My name is Marta. I’m 25 years old. I’m from a small city of the southeast of Spain. I’ve recently obtained my College Degree in Social Work, and now I find myself looking for a job or a great and fruitful experience. I’m a tolerant, open-minded and passionate girl. Some interests about me: I love reading, music, tea, poetry, animals, having a time between the nature, rollerblading, and I’ve recently started climbing. I’m interested in discovering the world with my own eyes and in creating new bonds with different people. I’m a sensitive person who is also concerned and cares about environmental and social issues which are happening everyday in our reality.
Patrycja
Cześć! Jak się masz? I come from Poland. I love travelling and one day I want to be a professional traveler. I like to take photos, to film, meet new people from all over the world and to learn more about foreign cultures and history! My other passion is everything concerning Latin America: speaking Spanish, the latin dances... I also study English and Portuguese. Now I’m in Greece for 6 months to do an EVS project and hopefully discover this country in the best way possible!
I’m the short guy with dreadlocks who is coming from Roque Viva! northern Portugal. For the next 10 months I’ll spend my time
in Kalamata as a volunteer in K.A.NE.. I came into this adventure so I could meet new people, a different and new culture and to learn Greek. I’d to share with others all my knowledge, interests and beliefs. If you like sunsets, swimming, nature, hiking and listening to music, what are waiting for?! Join me!

What do you think is the biggest achievement in the last decade?
The greatest achievements during the last 10 years are the speaking and consciousness that is carried out more or less quickly in the world, on previously taboo topics such as feminism, LGBTQ+ communities, ecology, alternative lifestyles, etc. Lucas I think for me it is the invention of the electric scooter. It’s amazing and it’s the future. Marlene I think the mainstream access to the internet made all the good things happen. We have information in our hand and everyone is connected. Unfortunately, it also made a lot of bad things happen.
Anja
Biggest achievement for me it’s spreading awareness about different topics: ecological/LGBTQ+/ socio-economic/… issues. I don’t really remember how it was before 2010 but I love how we created a huge dialog around certain topics and, in my opinion, talking and communicating about things is the most important part of solving problems.
Marta
Celia
A big achievement from this decade is the way of the ecological, social and women movements and coming through the society and getting stronger every day.
For me, the greatest achievement of this decade is the growing awareness of our ecological footprint. As well as the willingness to transmit this knowledge to create a more sustainable vision of needs and our actions in the world. Elisabetta For me is the new feminist movement who took place in the last few years. An awareness about female conditions is spreading all over the world in these last few years and I find so inspirational to see all the girls come together again to try to fight against male oppression towards us. In the last decades, the feminist movement was very silent and I would say almost invisible, but now is rising again and for me is the best achievement of this decade.
Patrycja The greatest achievement of this decade is, above all, the growing awareness of people on many levels, thanks to which we strive for positive social, environmental and health changes.
Lea I think for me it is that a lot of minorities are now being heard - or at least the public is starting to pay more attention to various social movements. There is still a long way to go, but diversity is being more accepted and appreciated and that is a really nice development in my eyes.
Roque The possibility of more and more people being able to express themselves without being criticized or humiliated. 8

Perhaps I have seen some regressions between countries in terms of racism, women’s rights, and human rights.
What upsets you the most in the last decade? Not personally, but in general development?
Lucas Emmanuel Macron became the president of France. Marlene For sure the migrants problematic and the constantly extreme positions (political or not) growing in our society, increasing polarization between us.
Anja
With the rise of activists for minority rights there is of course even bigger rise of people with narrow minds and inability of constructive behaviour (fact that right-winged parties are taking over all over the world is of course not helping). Watching how people are becoming more and more hateful towards minorities is what made me upset the most.
Marta The fact that despite all the social and ecological movements that are presented in our actual society and despite all the evidence that exist of the climate change, and social injustices there are a lot of political forces and others kinds of movements who are still denying these kinds of situations.
Celia
Patrycja
The deforestation of the Amazon - in my opinion, the largest natural laboratory of humanity. The list of decisions with ecological stakes was growing this decade. As also the denial of the personal responsibilities of many of us for a better future in the decades to come - every little action today will make the big changes of tomorrow.
By far the most annoying phenomenon for me is the radicalization of society and the increasing nationalistic/xenophobic movements. Another huge problem is people who think that global warming, climate change is an invention and bad propaganda. Roque
Elisabetta
I find it very sad that technology is making people more introvert, less willing to communicate face to face and above all, all these changes not only due to technology but to strong ideologies are making us “less human” when interacting with others.
Seeing the right parties winning elections all over the World: Trump, Bolsonaro, Salvini and the list continues. It’s a rise of the far-right movements and it’s really scary to me to see so many politics using the rhetoric of hate towards minorities and having such a large approval between the people. Lea One tendency is making me really angry: The success of the far-right political parties. Another thing is that the priority setting is kind of messed up. Notre Dame burns and the whole world knows in less than 24 hours. The rainforest burns and it takes two weeks until the news reach other countries.

I dream about a world where the real concerns are to succeed in countering global warming and to succeed in creating a better equality across each country for each person.
Your prediction of how the 2020’s will be?
Lucas It will be sad, of course, polar bears will be bears at all. Marlene We are in a breaking point for global warming, growing in population and needs. The ones with the power to drastically change things, many times set money as a priority which creates a gigantic delay in any attempts to save our planet. But we will continue fighting! I’m seeing now a great effort of my generation to connect with nature, in an offline world. I think this effort is getting bigger.
Anja
I believe that something really bad will happen and it may sound scary, but the world really needs to restart in order to be better. Maybe we’ll finally understand what important values are. Celia I hope to see an end to over-consumption and massive industrialization, even if this seems utopian for most of humanity. Consider more sustainable methods - I can only predict bad consequences given our evolution. Elisabetta I hope to see a rise against this wave of hate that is spreading all over the world. I would love to see people becoming more aware of the conditions of the minorities and actually, starting to change that. I would love to see a more respectful and aware future for us.
Marta I hope pro-environmental and pro-human right movements continue changing this huge and a little destroyed world.
Patrycja Lea
I hope that people’s consciousness will grow and that the situation will start to improve anyway.
I fear that a lot of people won’t change anything and keep on ignoring that change is needed in a lot of topics. But somehow I have the feeling that especially the young generations are aware of the impact their behaviour has and maybe we will live more consciously as a lot of stuff is getting really serious.
Roque A world more conscious about who we are, where we are and how we are affecting everything that surrounds us.

A letter to 2010
Quite every social movement that took place in the last ten years has an online presence and for sure being connected helped a lot to raise the awareness for certain issues - Fridays for Future is organizing their global protests via Instagram, #metoo, #niunamenos, and #blacklivesmatter became important hashtags. Another example of how helpful the in-
Dear decade of 2010,
T
he last ten years have been kind of messed up. One the one hand the human race was capable of achieving a lot of breakthroughs, especially in science and in various social movements, but on the other side, it seems like we are just getting dumber and dumber every day.
“
(...) we can even find our soulmate online thanks to algorithms.
”
Thanks to the internet and modern technology, we are connected with each other as humans have never been before. In real-time we can call another person on another continent, we can look up every information we want to know and can order everything online. We can even find our soulmate online thanks to algorithms. Nowadays, the internet and technology are determining the majority of our life even if we might not want to admit that. There are a lot of advantages we gained thanks to the world wide web. We can not only profit personally by having such a fast connection to every point of the world.
ternet can be is the Ice Bucket Challenge: After the trend went viral globally, such a big amount of money has been collected through the challenge so that a new medical and biological research could be financed. In the end, even a new ALS gene could be discovered thanks to the financial resources collected throughout the challenge. But unfortunately, as much as useful and correct information can be shared on the Internet, a lot of useless, and even harmful stuff can be shared. I guess that most of us will know what Harlem-Shake, Gangnam-Style, What does the Fox say, the Cup-Song, the Dog-Filter, Duckface, Dabbing and Bottle Flips are about.
“
(...) a lot of useless, and even harmful stuff can be shared.
”
12
People were even spending their time having huge discussions about a dress whether its colours are #whiteandgold or #blackandblue. Mirror-selfies became a thing. Penis pics too. We started to use Smileys (thanks to some protests, the emojis now are representing different skin tones and the LGBTQ+-movement!) and memes to express our feelings. And for some of us, the amount of streaks might be the most significant measurement of the quality of a friendship. Some of the above mentioned might be funny, some might be really useless, but they are not harmful. And sadly, this category of viral trends developed too. People died because they were taking selfies at the edges of really high buildings just to follow a viral challenge. And then, there is also the Blue Whale Challenge: It starts with a harmless task, and the further you get into the challenge, the more harmful it gets. After animating the players to upload pictures of them cutting themselves, it eventually ends up encouraging people to jump from the highest building in the city.
“
People died because they were takting selfies at the edges of really high buildings just to follow a viral challenge.
”
But Social Media does not always need a challenge in order to be harmful: A lot of pressure is built on Social Media users. As it is possible to share everything with everyone, we see a lot of stuff that is going on in other people’s life. People can even finance their life by being active on social media - we all know the famous Influencers doing advertisement, and apparently living their best life. And that’s another problem: On Media, we can show whatever we want. And most people just post memories of nice moments of their life. That’s understandable, but I think it makes it really hard for ourselves to appreciate what we have. Since I use social media, I enjoy it less to just sit in my cozy bed with some tea, reading a good book as I always have a comparison of what other people are doing. I hope, that in the next decade we will use the Internet in a more useful way. And I really hope, we will use it less and start to communicate again with each other face to face more than we do via Messengers.

The starting point of a reflection about changes
wo Thousand and Ten. What was I doing in 2010? It is very strange to think that I was practically half the years I am now. It is even stranger thinking about how much I have changed. Ten years ago, I was in 5th grade. I remember learning the prime numbers in Math class and my Portuguese teacher demanded that we all should have white notebooks and write in permanent ink pen. In Music class, we learned to play the flute with Celine Dion’s song “My Heart Will Go On” aka theme song of Titanic, and in History, we learned how democracy was formed in Ancient Greece and the teacher gave us some images representative of that time to stick in our notebook.
“
(...) ten years later, changes are evident at all levels and with them, growth comes.
”
Now, ten years later, changes are evident at all levels and with them, growth comes. I look at my friends and notice the same. I look at my family and I start to notice fewer differences. I look at my city and notice again some differences, at least as far as my memory goes. What did happen in Portugal? What happened in the world? Have there been significant changes? Growth and progress? Or regression?
14
Before going any further, I would just like to explain the reason for this questioning. Some days ago, I was trying to study a bit of the history of Greece and a YouTube video caught my attention particularly. The narrator was outraged that, in the ancient war drawn between Greece and Persia, Sparta had won Persia, and this may have caused many civilizational delays. As it turns out, the Persian empire mainly followed the religion of Zoroastrianism, which specifically outlaws slavery. Besides, it was also stated that religious freedom was declared. On the other side, the majority of Greek cities practiced slavery of some sort. According to this source, Sparta had such huge numbers of slaves that they created a social class and culture. Only almost two thousand and five hundred years later, we were able to declare slavery as inexistent and religious freedom. I don’t know if these facts are real, but they certainly made me question the progress of civilizations and how everything can change if we consider certain breaking points.
“ ”
(...) started this decade with a world economic crisis (...) Back to the present days, let’s reflect on some of the events that marked this decade and try to create a visual image of what might happen in the future. We started this decade with a world economic crisis and the legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries. Civil war raged Syria. #BlackLivesMatter movement. Smartphones became mainstream. Daesh performed terrorist attacks across the world. Je Suis Charlie. Migrant Crisis. Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. Brexit. Cybersecurity. #MeToo movement. Anti-government protests in Hong-Kong. The first black hole image captured. Artificial intelligence and IoT everywhere. Plastic, plastic, plastic & CO2. Students strike for climate action. Aging population. Increase in political polarization.
I will not try to describe my image to you since I think I have been partial enough. As Heraclitus said “you cannot step twice in the same river” and, as it is not possible to not change, I say that we must continue to look at things critically. Maybe today we are not slaves like many years ago but slaves in other ways... Maybe we are on the edge of a breaking point and we don’t even notice… One thing is for sure. We must be aware and try to strive for the best direction possible, as a world community, always! Author: Marlene

Interview Meeting Olga, a volunteer at the youth center for 8 years. Interviewer: Why did you decide to become a volunteer? Olga: I came to the youth centre for learning silence language and I fell in love with the atmosphere of this place. I started knowing a lot of people, local and European volunteers and being in contact with so many people from so different cultural backgrounds is really amazing and interesting. So I decided to become a volunteer and now my “job” here is to help with the coordination of the centre and I also teach traditional Greek dances.

(...) everything you do in your life changes you because you take a lot of feelings (...)
”
Interviewer: What is for you the most difficult part of being a volunteer here at the youth center? Olga: I work with a lot of people very different from one another and I have to try to connect with everyone and sometimes this part can be hard due to the big differences between all the people that come to the youth centre. You have to try to communicate as possible as you can and try to connect with them but is not always easy, sometimes it can be really hard too. Interviewer: And the best part of being a volunteer at the youth center? Olga: Also, this part. Being in contact with so many different people, with different mindsets, different cultures, different styles of life, as I said before it can be really difficult to connect with everyone but is also the best part, having a lot of different people in such a small place is very interesting and beautiful.
Interviewer: Did this experience change you a little bit? Olga: Of course, but I cannot explain how. I really think that everything you do in your life changes you because you take a lot of feelings, you keep the best parts and let the difficult ones go. I want to say that meeting so many different people from one another really open your mind and right now I can’t see living my life without the youth center, it became part of my everyday routine.
“ ”
What would you say to people to encourage them to become a volunteer?
Interviewer: What would you say to people to encourage them to become a volunteer? Olga: I would encourage them to come to the youth center and meet all the interesting people that come here. People with different nationalities and cultures. I would encourage them to learn about the KANE project and all the possibilities for young people to travel and do volunteer abroad. Doing this kind of project really changes how you see the world and how you interact with other people. I would say to people to come out of their comfort zone and travel and collect these beautiful opportunities. Interviewer: Betta

Interview I am interviewing a volunteer from the EVS who comes from the South of France. She is in Kalamata for two months and is a volunteer at the Dash dog shelter in Messini. This shelter is the largest in Greece and relies solely on donations and the work of volunteers.
Erasmus+ Volunteer
Interviewer: How do you know about the European Solidarity Corps? Lise: I didn’t know him, I had to make a Young Guarantee and so I had a counselor at the local mission who I had told about my desire to work with animals, she received an email from the IPPEIC in Montpellier for the project and she told me about it.
“ ”
I’m someone who’s always had a lot of love and empathy for animals.
Interviewer: Can you tell us more about your desire to help the dog shelter, DASH? Lise: I’m someone who’s always had a lot of love and empathy for animals. So, every moment I’m down, I try to be as present and accurate as possible in the tasks I perform. I really feel like I’m making myself useful and bringing them some happiness. Interviewer: How has this experience been a positive experience for you? And what do you take away from the negative? Lise: This experience is very positive for me because I feel useful, I think I have found my place within the team or among the dogs. It gives me a rather peculiar feeling of happiness because despite all the little things that can be complicated to live with every day, I think that one can’t replace the sincere love of an animal. The only thing I get out of the negative is maybe that I hate more and more the human being, not being a very sociable basic person, after learning some stories about the past of dogs, I really lost faith in humanity. “ The more I know people, the more I love my dogs.”.

Interviewer: How has this volunteer project changed you? Lise: This project made me evolve in the right direction, I feel even more invested than during my civic service in France, it allowed me to understand the difficulties of this country concerning animal welfare, and made me feel comfortable in my choice to work in the animal field, and especially in shelters or care centers.
“
(...) my little pleasure in the morning is to take the time to say hello to each of them.
Interviewer: Why would you recommend this project? What would you say to someone who wants to get involved? Lise: I would recommend to someone to choose this project because we are with the dogs every day and because they bring so much love to the day, my little pleasure in the morning is to take the time to say hello to each of them. I would tell this person to be aware of the work that will be asked of him by coming on this structure, it is a physical work quite tiring and not very rewarding sometimes (picking up poops is not really what I like the most). But besides these little things, the relationships we can make with dogs are unique and so comforting.

Adventure of the week Trip: Kalamata to Koroni Duration (bus): +/- 1.5h Rate of experience (1-10 scale): 8.2 (where 10 is “THE BEST EVER”)
What’s going behind the doors of Koroni?!
A
place that I’ll try to describe as I felt and experienced it and will do my best to represent it to you, my dear reader, is Koroni. Searching for facts about places we visit is easy with technology nowadays so I will try to stay away from that history part of the story. Stepping from the modern bus to this ancient, cute, little town got me feeling like I am in an animated movie where everything is downsized, colorful and cute. Little pastel-colored houses with colorful doors and shutters are hugging paved narrow streets and cats are just laying around and are getting kissed by the sun and live their extra nomad life. What also mesmerized me was looking at the little woman hanging her laundry on a rope a few meters away from the house (so it was actually by the road) and for me, this is a huge indicator that is showing how safe these people feel and that they trust each other. The town itself is wonderfully quiet because it’s not massively populated and because of it I got the feeling that time was standing still- I also immediately got the feeling that Koroni ‘’breaths.’’ When I talk about that city Is ‘’breathing’’ it for sure is a huge compliment: for me, that means that there’s no hustle and bustle of the city and that the only thing I can focus on is the city itself, my thoughts and feelings I’m getting. While walking around I realized that I always get hypnotized by the front doors of the houses. What I loved in Koroni is that every house feels like it’s welcoming you even though the old rumors suggest that closed doors symbolize defense, forbiddance, restriction, etc. I just felt such a heartwarming and cozy feeling when I was observing the architecture and vibe of the city. Even though I am a big lover of hidden meanings behind things, I cannot see sense it when it comes to the closed doors of Koroni. Author: Anja

Place of the week
Χιλιόμετρο Καλαμάτας “Kalamata’s Kilometer”
F
or me, the place of the week is absolutely the kilometer. If you want to enjoy a sunny day if the view of the sea relaxes you, if you need some peace and calm this place is the right one for you!
It’s a beautiful walk near the port of kalamata full of fishermen, boats (someone will try to sneak into them...) and at some point, you will find some stairs, so you will be able to go on the top of this construction and watch the sea from the top! I like to sit down, read a book and listen to the sound of the waves hitting the rocks. It’s so peaceful!
And now the best part of this experience: the sunset! If you are at home doing nothing and it’s a very limpid day and it’s almost 5 p.m., then take your bag and go there! You will see a beautiful sunset from an amazing place, and if you have some friends to share this moment with, even better! Author: Betta

Place to Travel Καταρράκτες Νέδας “Neda’s Waterfall”
This week, I’m going to propose Neda’s stunts. Lost in the depths of the Peloponnese mountains, there is about an hour and a half drive from Kalamata.
Once you get to the parking lot you have to park your car, take your backpack and your paws and it’s off for a good half-hour walk before arriving at the stunts. The path is quite steep at times and it happens that the void is quite close, so I advise you to take a good pair of walking shoes and adequate clothes. After half an hour of walking, you will arrive at the waterfalls. The water is crystal clear, the place is very relaxing and if you go there out of season you will not come across many people. After crossing the small bridge, the path continues and leads you to the side of the mountain. You will find yourself at the edge of the cliff in the hollow of the mountains with the river flowing just below. There you will also find an old Orthodox chapel built directly on the cliff. I highly recommend you stop there, it is a very quiet and relaxing place.

Song of the week “Broken”
By Jessie Reyez feat THEY
LYRICS We fall in love, you does the most But I question it all ’cause I’m still broken He gets tired, then he leaves Then I cry and I repeat Fall in love again, f**k it up again There’s still the affect I cry Better being friends to avoid the pain I say I’m okay, I’m not It’s always the same It’s like I’m lookin’ for someone to save me Someone to blame So I can cry and ask you why’d you break me? And now you say I didn’t come broken And now you say you did it And now you say I didn’t come brokeeen We fall in love, I do the most You question it all ’cause you still brokeeen I give you space, let you breathe Flip it on me then it repeats I messed it up again, pissed you off again Give you love, this what I got Dissed me off again, acting out again Think it’s okay, well it’s not It’s always the same It’s like I’m lookin’ for someone to save me Someone to blame So I can cry and ask you why’d you break me? And now you say I didn’t come broken And now you say you did it And now you say I didn’t come brokeeen

Restaurant of the week Πλάτανος Καφέ Μεζεδοπωλείο “”
4,5 Average cost: $ Address: Artemidos 84, Kalamata 241 34 Contact: 2721 088266 Openning hours: 09:30 - 00:30 Monday 09:30 - 00:30 Tuesday Wednesday 09:30 - 00:30 09:30 - 00:30 Tuesday 09:30 - 00:30 Friday 09:30 - 00:30 Saturday Closed Sunday
The restaurant of the week is Platanos Taverna. In this place, you can find typical food from Greece like pork baked in an oven (which is freaking DELICIOUS!) or dough with feta and honey (which is also AWESOME ) The server is attentive and patient (several people were vegetarians or vegans), the service was fairly quick despite the fact that there are quite a few people in the restaurant. The dishes were good and inexpensive. Like all restaurants in Greece, there is always a cat and a dog who wander around the table in order to recover this little piece of food that someone will drop to the ground. If you want to have a good time with friends, I recommend you go there to have fun around good food and a good glass of wine.
