Hello there! My fool name is Aleksandra but everyone calls me Ola. I’m 19 and I just finished high school. I come from capital of Poland – Warsaw. I love chocolate, amazing harmonies, good guitar riffs, totally crazy hairstyles and classic rock. I’m a dancer therefore I will be teaching contemporary dance in the Youth Centre but my primary job will be in therapeutic horse riding centre. See you around!
Hi ! My name is Paquita, I'm 26 years old and I'm from Marseille in France. I will stay here for 11 months. My mission will be working in therapeutic horse-riding centre and in KEFIAP Center assisting people with disabilities. I just finished my studies in Art-therapy and I'm very enthusiastic to begin my EVS. This will be a great experience for me :)
Hello! I’m Angelina and I’m 26 years old. I decided to come to Kalamata as a volunteer because I already knew about this kind of opportunities and it was time for drastic changes in my life. You can find me at the Youth Center where I’ll be leading Russian language and fitness + stretching workshop. Can’t wait to meet you at Kentro Neon.

Hello there ! My name is Maïlén I'm 25 years old. I come from Brussels in Belgium and I've graduated a few months ago as a social worker. This year is my volunteery year : before Greece I was in Bénin for 2 months where I worked with abused young girls, now I came to Kalamata for 6 months to work on the ACT Project helping refugees. In my spare time, I'm a musician (singer and violinist), I love to read, art, watch series and movies and have a drink with friends.
Bonjour! My name is Ophélie, I come from France. I am in Kalamata for 11 months and will volunteer at the Day Care Center for children with autism. Living abroad is a wonderful opportunity to meet fascinating people and learn about cultures. It allows to become independent, open-minded and avoid ethnocentrism. I can’t wait to discover the greek way of life and visit the country. I’m also excited about tasting the food (of course!). I like to exchange and discover so… see you soon around Kalamata!
Καλημέρα! My name is Antía and I come from Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. I have arrived in this city because some years ago I made the “mistake” –but, who chooses these things? - of falling in love with Greece and with the Greek language. So, after finishing my university studies in Humanities and Literature, I decided to start my Greek periplus, periplus that, after Thessaloniki and Crete, has found its new stage here in Kalamata. Να μας δούμε στο ταξίδι! 7

I’m Mina and I’m a 28 years old free spirit. I don’t like routine and I think that everything that seems interesting is worth trying. I’m fascinated about human interaction and being part of K.A.NE. gives me opportunity to meet and work with many beautiful people. I'm into si-fi and superheroes and I guess that shaped me into an idealist who believes that there is beauty and courage in everything, no matter how small. Therefore, our duty as human beings is to highlight it.
Hello, my name is Nicolas, I'm 25 years old, and I come from Lille in north of France. Last years, I worked as a volunteer in an association in Lille for a civic service. There, I worked with families in precarious situations, help them save money and, at the same time, raise their awareness of sustainable development. I am in Kalamata for 6 months to work on the ACT project to help migrants and refugees. I also hope to improve my english. In my life, I like music, reading books, watching series and having good times with friends.

MARIA
Hallo! I’m Maria from Liechtenstein and I’m 19. I finished high school this summer and now I’m doing EVS to take a break before attending university and, hopefully, studying social education. Working at my parent’s restaurant and now at the dog-rescue-center is going to be a nice experience before my "normal life" begins. Because it might be interesting, I’ll answer some often-asked questions about Liechtenstein. Yes, we are a very small country (37000 people in 167km2) and we do speak German. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. Lots of Love, Maria. 9

Now I'm enjoying this Erasmus experience before introducing myself in the obstetrician working network. During my experience I'll work in a natural farm with Blaga. It's the first time I will work in this field and I'm very happy to work with her in nature. Hello. My name is Carolina and I live in Spain. SEBASTIANO
Ciao! I'm Sebastiano, but people call me "Seba". I come from a small city in the middle of Italy and I just finished 3 year course in Video&Graphic design. So basically I was working as a freelance videomaker before I decided to come to Kalamata as a volunteer! If you don't know me I can seem shy (I'm definitely not) but I just like to listen when I don't have anything interesting to say. I love music, movies and art in general, being open air, travelling and of course making new friends!

cinema oNE LEGEND Your Favourite FROMmovie YOUR COUNTRY OPHÉLIE “The Grave of the Fireflies” (1988). This japanese animated war drama written and directed by Takahata, animated by studio Ghibli. This is the story of two orphans at the end of the WWII in Japan. Critics describe it as “the most powerful anti-war movie”. This is the most deep, poetic, humane movie I ever seen and the first that ever made me cry.
MAJKA “Everything is illuminated" (2005) - based on book with the same title by Jonathan Safran Foer. Plot tells the story of a young man from USA who decided to search for woman who saved his grandfather during nazi times in Ukraine. The whole journey is filled with absurd circumstances but it leads to a meaningful and important conclusions. And unique role of Eugene Hütz (Gogol Bordello).
ANGELINA "Sherlock Holmes" Series based on the same named detective stories of Conan Doyle. The old idea of its interpreting into the 21st century was successful, images of Sherlock and his partner are strongly connected now with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Deserved top ratings movie!
BLAGA It is hard to pick just one so I will say few movies that really inspired me. It all begins with classic ‘The mirror’ from Tarkovsky. It has a non-chronological and discontinuous structure without conventional plot - combining incidents, dreams and memories along with some newsreel footage. I would also mention ‘The tree of life’ of Terrance Malick which, for sure, has inspiration drawn from ‘The mirror’. Another, animated, movie that I watched recently and fell mesmerized by was ‘Angel's egg’. 16
SHEILA My favourite movie is “Labyrinth” (1986), fantastic genre, starred by David Bowie. Iit is one more proof that the cinema of before is much better; without spectacular special effects; only with tricksters and a lot of skill; without the marketing of consumerism and without the vile money involved; industry engine. This movie is one from my childhood with adventures and good soundtrack.
SANDRA My favourite movie is “A beautiful mind” (2001). The plot is based in real story of John Nash, winner of Nobel Prize, that suffers of schizophrenia. The movie portraits the amazing mind of the mathematician but also the fight against mental illness. The actors have outstanding interpretations and the way how it tells the story is truly amazing, it balances the brilliance of Nash’s mind, his schizophrenia and his personal life.
SEBASTIANO My favourite movie of all time is Back to the Future, without doubts. The story is about a guy, who’s best friend, a scientist, built a time machine from a car and accidentally travelled 30 years back in time, when his parents were in high school. I watched it for the first time around 10 years ago and since then I’m obsessed with time travels and paradoxes of that kind. It’s really funny and interesting because it’s one of the most important movies in pop culture history!
OLA As a theatre and musicals lover the choice is, maybe not easy, but quite obvious - 2003 ecranisation of Broadway’s “Chicago” directed by Rob Marshall. Not only the plot is interesting with a slight pleasure of John Kander’s music but combining regular movie framing style with staged musical numbers straight from the theatre stage implies the idea of theatrum mundi - life is a theatre. All actions to gain freedom back is one big show and game play. 17
MAÏLÉN “The Lord of the Rings” is my first cinematic love at first sight. I was 11 years old when “The Fellowship of the Ring” came out and, after seeing it for the first time, I watched it every day until the second part came out. And since the third film came out, I watch the long version of the trilogy every year.
MARIA It’s very hard to choose one favourite movie. But i’d choose “Pacific Rim” this time, because it has a lot of elements that I love in movies. I adore movies about the end of the world, I love monsters/ dinosaurs and other things of that kind and I love the idea of humans building giant machines! To top it off, it’s an emotional movie and I like to cry during movies.
MINA This is a hard one...but I guess that today I am tempted to pick “Cloud Atlas”. A screen adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel, where the actors take on multiple roles in stories that spans five centuries. At first they don’t seem connected, but following them you realise that as souls are born and reborn, they renew their ideas and bonds to one another throughout time.
NICOLAS Among the films I've seen, two remain particularly in my mind. The first, "Pan's Labyrinth", a black tale perfectly combining the fantastic with a brutal and difficult historical reality. The second one, "Mulholand Drive" because I love its enigmatic and moving universe, as well as the director's tendency to let his audience make their own interpretations.

cinema the least appreciated movie OPHÉLIE “Kaboom” (2010). Years ago at a birthday party, as a joke, this movie was one of the gifts, so we decided to watch it. This science fiction story center on the sexual adventures of group of college students and their investigation of a bizarre cult. To make it short I prefered to fall asleep than to keep watching. Even if I did not like it, it is an important to stress that it received first ever Queer Palm at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival for its contribution to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender issues.
MAJKA “Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys” (2014). It all started with my fascination with the discovery of Lampreys. The jawless fish beauty. Well they are quite ugly, but their mouth and teeth looks like amazing mandala created by nature. One day I spotted this movie and well, just take a look at the poster.
SEBASTIANO The movie that I appreciate the less is Lord of the Rings, for sure. It’s because I don’t really like fantasy movies and I saw this movie years after it came out so I didn’t had the “hype” about special effects and stuff that everybody were enjoying at the time. Everytime I tell this to someone they watch me like I’m crazy, but please don’t judge me!
BLAGA When there is a movie I don’t like, I usually forget it. Basically, if i watch a movie, I prefer to go to arthouse cinema in Sofia or download at home because I don’t enjoy what is shown in big cinemas and this 3D glasses makes my eyes and head so heavy... I think I cannot manage to watch the action movies with a lot of special effects. 19
MAÏLÉN Being generally admiring Lars von Trier's work, I was very disappointed by his film “Melancholia” : the shots give me a headache, the scenes are excessively long and the plot is disappointing. It is not, for me, the director's representative film; even if many consider it a masterpiece.
SHEILA The movies that I appreciate the least are japaneese genres like samurai movies or anime, also, I find movies from the west very boring.
ANGELINA I wouldn't call myself a faint-hearted person, still I don't appreciate any kind of horror movies or psycho thrillers. The feeling of anxiety long after watching these kind of movies gives me no pleasure at all. Probably "Final destination" was the first and the only horror I ve seen from start till the end. And made a full stop.
NICOLAS “Jurassic World”. I remember wanting to leave the cinema in the middle of the film when I saw it. It is only a failed imitation of the first opus, the actors play badly, it’s full of clichés and the scenario is not inspired at all. This film represents everything I hate about American cinema today, it's all in the special effects.
20
SANDRA “Bolod Father”. I went to the cinema and my friend book the wrong movie so we watched it. . It was so bad that in the second part I decided pick my home and read the news. Since the plot, bad effects and terrible interpretations...
MARIA I c a n ’t p i c k o n e m o v i e I l i k e d t h e l e a s t , b u t i n g e n e r a l I h a v e s o r t o f a b a d re l a t i o n s h i p w i t h war movies / movies that mostly exist because o f g u n f i re . A s t h e y a re n o t m y f a v o u r i t e g e n re b u t I u s e d t o w a t c h , o r r a t h e r, g o t ‘ f o rc e d ’ t o w a t c h s o m a n y o f t h e m , t h a t I o n l y l i k e a f e w, l i k e P e a r l H a r b o r.
OLA Again as a “I-prefer-theatre” person I haven’t watched a lot of movies but the one that left me disgruntled was a remake of “Footloose” from 2011. I don’t understand why one would want to take a perfectly timed (80’s baby!!!), with good, almost legendary music, and plot fitting the times of action movie and put it in modern times. And maybe my love for young Kevin Bacon has something to do with it…
MINA Personally, I don’t like action movies. I don’t have something specific in mind, but I really don’t appreciate movies that don’t have a story to tell or a well contoured character and they are more concentrated on the special effects and how “though” this “empty” characters are.

cinema favourite movie quote OPHÉLIE “Ca va être tout noir” - RRRrrrr (2004). A quote from a hilarious movie due to the french off-the-wall humour of the actor/director Alain Chabat. This sentence is the best way to look for french speaker when you’re abroad. If you say it and someone gives you the right answer, be sure you find one with a wonderful sense of humour! “It’s gonna be dark” is the translation.
MAJKA I’m not one of this people that can easily find in their mind a movie quote for every situation. I’m better in remembering the pictures, scenes. That’s the reason I will leave here a scene from my favourite movie ‘Everything is illuminated’
BLAGA I think that the function of cinema is to provoke our inner knowings, our deeper memories by triggering all this things that can not be communicated by our limited word of words. That is way I enjoy cinema. The way it can show us things that hardly can be described with words. It can be pure visual poetry. As for a quote I will leave here a quote from a movie that I really like from Bergman - ‘Fanny and Alexander’. 22
MINA “You never know if you can fly unless you take the risk of falling.” This quote belongs to my favourite character, Nightwing. It’s not from a movie, but from a comic book, DC’s Secret Origins vol.2, issue #13 released in April 1987. As the title of the series suggest, this is the issue that presents the origin story of that time of Batman’s first Robin, Dick Grayson. He is also the first sidekick in the history of comic books.
MAÏLÉN “Pas de bras, pas de chocolat” (“No arms, no chocolate”) is taken from the French film "Intouchables" which I consider one of the best. This film is tender, funny and gives back faith in human goodness. In short, it's the story of a ghetto boy who finds himself working for a tetraplegic. A strong and sincere friendship is born between the two men who boast about each other ; and the scene of this sentence represents this still recent complicity at this level of the film.
MARIA “Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you gonna get” from Forrest Gump. Why the quote is amazing does not need a lot of explanation. To be honest it does not mirror my life exactly, but the quote and this lovely movie will always stay in my mind.
SHEILA “Supercalifragilisticoespialidoso” from Mary Poppins' (1964) song quote, another of my favorite movie in musical genre, and very f u n n y. T h e s o n g d e s c r i b e s t h e m i r a c u l o u s w a y in which one can overcome difficult situations, and even change his own life.
23
SANDRA “Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up”. This quote is from 'Batman - Begins' (2005) and is a good lesson from the movie. It also synthesize much of Batman universe and this scene is still very vivid.
OLA “ -To kłam stwo! Kop er nik b yła kob ie tą! Einstein?! - Te ż b y ła kob iet ą! -A m o ż e C u r ie S kłod owska te ż ?!” (“-It’s a lie! Kop er nik wa s a wom an” -Einstein?! -Also a wom an! - And m a ybe Cur ie-Skłod owska too?!”) This q uote c om e s from M achulski’s 1983 p olish classic com e dy “ Sexm ission” where two m en were froz en a s a n e xp er im ent b ut, caused m y circum stance s, got defrozen in a p ost-war wor ld where only w om e n were existing. This d ialog com es from a sc e n e where m en were fighting ab out m an histor ic a l figures tr ansfor m ed into fem ale v er sions.
SEBASTIANO From the movie “Hugo”, by Martin Scorsese, and it says: “I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.”
ANGELINA "Happiness Is Only Real When Shared" from 'Into The Wild' (2007). I Like this quote for having truthful sense. Life circumstances gave me the lesson that remains in this quote already couple of times, so it might be my motto or a reminder not to get out of t h e s o c i e t y s o d e s p e r a t e l y.

cinema the deeper meaning of movies
Movies are a huge part of my and many people’s life. Either if I watch one alone, many of them in a row or together with friends, watching movies is, with exceptions, a fun activity to enjoy. So as I said, I watch a lot of movies and some of them multiple times, but other than a lot of people, I often don’t analyse the movie while watching it. I do not search for the deeper meaning, I don’t analyse which actor played how well and if this role fits him or not. I often just purely and blindly enjoy the movie. Of course this depends a lot of the genre as well. Historical movies are obviously a completely different experience to watch as silly comedies. But even here, if the movie is off the historical details in order to be a bit more exciting or emotional, I’m still totally in. Sometimes in life you need to give your brain a present of pure joy without thinking, for me, lots of times, this happens when enjoying a nice movie. Thought, the more I know about the franchise, the more I like to talk about the movie, the plot, the text and similar things. For example, after watching Infinity War, me as 25
a huge Marvel fan (Disclaimer for the people that care: I don’t hate DC, I just really love Marvel more) there was a lot to talk about after finishing the movies. Tons of questions, actions of character to talk about, whether we think that was typical for the character or not, and whether we like the ending or not. So, ironically enough, after watching an action movie, which makes other people shut their brain, makes me think about everything I ever knew about the franchise, but Movies that are supposed to make me reflect them on my own life do not. Also, as a very (very) emotional person, I cry a lot during movies. The movie does not even have to be sad to make me cry. My favourite memory about this is, when I watched “Herbie” as a child, maybe 7 years old, and I cried when Herbie was broken and alone in a corner in the rain. A car - I cried - as a child. Back to the main topic, a genre that is the definition of watching without thinking is horror. Horror movies are a big part of my life. Some years ago I turned into a huge horror fan while I was not even able to watch Lincoln in cinema with my siblings before. I don’t know when and why exactly my obsession with ‘watching pain happening’ started but I enjoy it ever since. Also very absurd Movies like Human Centipede which I watched all 3 of them in one weekend (If you are somewhat ok with horror movies I really recon those movies). So all in all my relation to movies might be a bit weird, but I can only recon to watch movies or even series without thinking at all from time to time. It’s such a nice way to relax your brain.

cinema t h e P h e n o m en o n o f po l i s h voice-over
What a pleasure it is to turn the TV on Friday evening or go to the movies during those long long winter nights. To sit comfortably in your armchair, put some snacks by your side, turn the lights off and relax. The entry starts, characters appear on the screen and… yes! The dialog starts! But wait… why, where and what for this strange monotonic voice is distracting the actor’s voices…? Welcome to polish reality! Whether you choose to see the movie in cinemas, put any program on television screen or play one from CD you will always come across voiceover (and most of the times the same guy!). Statistics says: more that 50% people 27
prefer narrating over other methods. Nowadays in cinemas, more and more movies with subtitles and dubbing appears but still, voice-over is exceling. How did all this happen? I’m here to tell you!
We distinguish three kinds of techniques – subtitles, dubbing and voiceover. The first one is easy to explain – at the bottom of the page, translation is being shown, so the viewer can hear the original track without any distractions. The second one, dubbing, is mixing additional or supplementary recordings with original sound. In Poland, this technique is mostly used in animations for kids and computer games. The third one, the most popular in post-USSR countries, is voice-over, also called narrator. This way of voicing is made by putting the narrator’s voice on top of original soundtrack so both actor’s and narrator’s voice are hearable. Why it’s so popular? To be honest, I’m not a fan, but many people I know prefer watching something with Tomasz Knapik’s (the most popular narrator; pictured on right) monotonic voice regarding the comfort it brings – no need to read nor 28
getting used to ten thousand voices. In many cases people are so used to this method that they don’t see other way of watching movies. It’s not their fault. Polish voice-over history reaches the times of first movies shown in our motherhood. During those times you would go to the cinema and on side of the screen, you would find a man, who throughout the movie would read at loud and do live voice-overring. The same refers to TV. Simultaneously to the action, the reader in the studio would read dialogs at loud. At the time that new magnetic storages were invented, the voice started to be recorded and so more and more recipients could enjoy the magic of 10th muse, although live-reading is still being practiced.
Voices about this subject are divided between us, Polish people. Everyone has its own opinion and preferences while hurling insults at others. Fortunately, although tv situation won’t change and either you watch with original soundtrack (still not that common) or voice-overing, increasable more people start using their choice and narrating in cinemas is ousted. I strongly believe that, at some point, we will satisfy everyone. Until then, let the monotonic man voice rule! … I guess…

cinema matter o f taste
Like an insatiable spectator I devour new films, popular series and scandalous TV shows avidly. I wonder, what’s the end of your everyday after-work evenings before final going to bed? I found my own perfect cure for sound sleep-watching light movies, short facile series. Actually, given the second thought I’ve changed my mind: they make me thrilled and ecstatic. Have you ever noticed that people on the screen do not just speculate on diverse issues they are facing? Simultaneously they have some snacks, make small bites of extremely savory mouth-watering meals, sip cocktails, at least. Yet food may be presented in the spotlight. 30
Julie & Julia discover classical recipes of accomplishment the challenging assignments / how to find your real vocation / vary day-to-day working routine owing to exquisite French cuisine. Even trivial sandwiches there look like artwork! (Julie & Julia, 2009) If you’re passionate about pervasive mindset of giving things a try (in all meanings of the phrase), here you are. Taste a renewed life as it was done by Julia Roberts in Italy! (Eat, pray, love, 2010) For those who like it spicy, "Hell’s Kitchen" is an alter native. Tensed strained atmosphere of the show, high seasoned with an eccentric behavior of Gordon Ramsay, and it’s just the backstage. The name of the game is serious competitions and fights of people who claim to be the best chefs. Serve hot! Jamie Oliver (Jamie Oliver's Food Tube) not only shares practical tips for cooking on different occasions, but most importantly shows the process himself. Thus he assures that cheap-&-cheerful effortless home-made cooking isn’t a dream. Frankly speaking, my provoked ambitions don’t go so far, however should admit: high quality shoots of video tips are impressive indeed! Well, it reminds me of a vicious circle: can’t sleep without having an esthetic visual pleasure. However feelings of endless excitement and those appetizing episodes leave me awakened long after!) Hm, inner voice is telling me “Perhaps, it’s high time to cook something extraordinary new!” ANGELINA KAYSINA

cinema psych o logy an d ci n ema
After Psychology and Mythology, let’s continue to discover how psychology is connected to others subjects. The eye of Psychology into movies In 1916, few years after the release of the first film ever “Arrivée d’un train à la Ciotat” by Louis Lumière, a Harvard psychologist, Munsterberg spread the idea of studying cinema through the eyes of psychology. S Fischoff Ph.D, who founded The Society for Media Psychology and Technology, explained: “We’re looking at the different dimensions of film experience, at the cognitive component of film, as the human mind mediates what comes out in terms of behavior.” 32
Nowadays, studying films from psychological perspective is combining many disciplines. Cognitive psychology is interested in the neurobiological responses of films’ viewer; marketing psychology is studying the effectiveness of product placement… The therapeutically effect (known as cinema therapy) or the emotional and behavioral impacts of movies (to name only few) are also examined by psychologists. Film as reflection of the society is a fascinating tools to study individual’s and social psychology. The eye of movies into Psychology Psychologists themselves are often invited into movies as characters. It has been stressed that inaccurate portrayals of psychologists in some movies has an impact on the public attitude toward the profession (cf. studies of M.Orchowski and J.V Flowers). Mental illness is a recurrent topic into movies. Here is an obviously nonexhaustive list of movies in which you can meet psychopathology*: Thrillers: Before I go to sleep (2014) : Amnesia, The Iceman (2013) : Psychopathy, Shutter Island (2010), The Machinist (2005), Hide and Seek (2004) : schizophrenia, selective amnesia, Identity (2003) : disorders of personality, Red Dragon (2002) : psychopathy, Hannibal (2001) : disorders of personality, The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001) : disorders of personality, Das Experiment (2001), American Psycho (2000) : psychopathy, The Sixth Sense (1999), The game (1997), Se7en (1995) : schizophrenia, Copycat (1995), The Silence of the Lambs (1991) : psychopathy, The Shining (1980), Play Misty for Me (1971), Psycho, (1960) , Manhunter (1960) : psychopathy, Santa Sangre (1989) : schizophrenia, etc…

cinema serve with a m ovi e
Every country has its own cuisine preferences, cherished and kept for centuries. Greece takes pride in Mediterranean cuisine: fasolada, pasticio, kurabie and melomakarona, spanakopita, etc. Yet in June, 22-30, people of a neighboring country hosts Festival for the-best-while-watching-movie-snack. Italy, Napoli, is considered as the original place of Pizza, 9 February is the X Day. However they believe that the Ancient Greeks gave such a round shape to pizza. The prototype was a round flatbread dressed with olive oil, diverse vegetables, meat and melted cheese on the top. The only difference from the modern pizza was the absence of exotic (back in that times) tomatoes. Today this favorite dish is popular as never, it's given. There is nothing like the smell of freshly baked pizza. This festive treat is sure to raise a smile before a single bite is taken. Let's bring a piece of delicious sunny Napoli heritage to our guests, love halves and friends! You'll manage, it doesn't require culinary skills of a Michelin star chef. Migration has many causes: political, economic, social and cultural. These causes intersect and reinforce each other. A person does not leave his country, his family, his relatives, his culture for one reason only. Various factors pushed him to the end of his cumulative suffering. Moreover, migrants are never the poorest of an already poor population who choose to migrate; because migration is quite expensive, and implies for the future migrant to be able to raise the necessary resources and means. What factors influence migration? 36
A. Safety factors : - Armed conflicts: Armed conflicts are among the main causes of emigration. They generate living conditions so unbearable that migrants are willing to risk their lives on long journeys, one of whose obligatory passages is the sea (just like the desert). Of all asylum applications made worldwide since 2014, the largest numbers have been from Syrians, Iraqis, Afghans and Eritreans. Four countries torn apart by war and dominated by authoritarian regimes - Persecution: Members of ethnic or religious minorities may be at risk if a state tolerates acts of racist violence. The example of the migration of Kosovars during the war with Serbia illustrates this well. - Low level of governance: When countries have low levels of governance, migration increases due to insecurity and instability at all levels. As proof the great migratory movements from Somalia to northern Europe and the United States. - Human rights violations, dictatorships: In the absence of a guarantee of fundamental rights, human beings are often victims of oppression and persecution. B. Economic factors : - Job search: The migrant is attracted by the possibility of employment in a society that can offer employment. In many countries, such as Tunisia, Algeria and Kenya, there are large numbers of unemployed university graduates. - Low economic growth: Many countries of origin of migrants have low growth and lack of development, and even when countries have high growth rates, incomes are very poorly distributed and only a minority benefit. C. Psychological and cultural factors : - The dream of leaving : The media, films and television presents a European society of well-being and abundance. Hence the dream of migrating to Europe to have a better quality of life. Europe exercises a fascination in the unconscious of people, and is perceived as a cultural, historical and economic paradise. 37
- Traditions and cultures: In some traditions and cultures, leaving the country plays an important role; this is the case in some societies where migration is part of the path that young people have to follow to attain adult status. - Rich countries' responsibility : Few times do we recognise that the many policies of the EU and international institutions are also responsible for Africa's lack of genuine local development, increasing poverty and forced migration of people. D. Environmental factors : - Natural or technological disasters: For example, the Tsunami was followed by a wave of migration of affected countries. Floods in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea. The Bhopal disaster in India, which continues to kill, means that many are still leaving for the region. The earthquake in Nepal has further increased migration from that country. The Chernobyl disaster led to the emigration of the entire population from the surrounding area. - Voluntary destruction of a habitat (economic project, war). - Pollution and resource depletion: for example, migration caused by soil impoverishment in the Sahel. E. Demographic factors : - The EU's responsibility for the impoverishment of certain countries, particularly the Middle East. - Economic and social responsibilities : Through agreements and policies of all kinds made under conditions of great imbalance between Africa and the former colonial masters. Through development policies that have not helped the real development of peoples and countries. - Political responsibilities: Through military interventions in these countries. Example: Involvement of the United States, the United Kingdom and France in Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Syria... In this sense, there are also political or other interventions that have set up or protected dictators who do not respect human rights. 38
We can see that the causes of migration are still beyond the people's control. Indeed, few people would leave their countries and cultures overnight, for no apparent reason. Most are forced to flee because they are confronted with certain causes named above. Most migrants, as we have seen, do not come from the poorest backgrounds because immigration is expensive and becomes a privilege. The poorest people travelling often take longer to reach their goal (often years) because they quickly lack the means on their roads and are often forced to stop on the way to work for an indeterminate period, in order to have the necessary resources to be able to continue. This is the case for most migrants from West Africa who leave their countries hoping to make a fortune in Europe, but they often find themselves trapped at certain stages of their journey where they find themselves trapped for months or years before being able to continue. But there is still a common motivation for all these people: the promise of a better life in Europe. Only they disenchant quickly when they get there.

SHEILA GOMEZ
interview with an act volunteer MAĂ?LEN MALENGREAUX
Mailen is an interesting ACT volunteer that has the habit of watching a lot of movies and TV shows. If you come to Aristomenous for sure you will find her some afternoon with her laptop cousy sitting on the couch and if you pay attention you will see her watching something. When I pass by, there is always something different, from french TV shows through historic movies, animations and so on‌ So lets learn about her tastes in cinema a bit more. Hello, Mailen! How did you develop such an interest in movies? Since I am young I am watching movies with my mother. It just came like that. I have always watched every kind of movie even if there was a restriction for children. My mother was okay with it. 41
Which is the first movie that you remember? It is about Merlin and the round table but I don’t remember the exact name. It shocked me because Arthur had to kill his own son. What kind of movies do you prefer? It depends. If one day I watch cartoons, the next I will watch historical movies and the day after I can watch science fiction. Sometimes it is only TV shows for weeks and I don’t watch any movies during this time. If you watch TV series do you start from the first season until the end? Yes, for example I don’t wait every week for the new episode. I am waiting for the whole season to come out and I can watch it for one night. Do you like watching also with other people? Yes, of course. It is always nice to share our experience and tastes. But it depends on the movies. I prefer watching some alone if I will cry. Or it depends with who you will watch it. There is a lot of people who likes to talk during the movie if it is a good movie you are just like ‘ Come on! Shut up! Let me appreciate it!’. Do you organize movie nights back at home? Not really organizing it. Just like if my friends are like ‘ Can I come to you place? ‘ and I am going to watch a movie. And they are ‘Okay. I will bring pizza or something…’. We never really plan it. Do you have specific taste for directors or do you read critics? Not so much. I am seeing sometimes what others are saying because there are directors that are not really appreciated. But usually I don’t care about critics. I prefer to have my idea of the movie. For example, one of my favourite movies ‘Red riding hood’ has bad critic but I love it. And would you like to write a movie? Not really. Let's talk about cartoons. Tell us some of your favourites. Pocahontas, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Brave, Ice age, Despicable me and many more except Frozen. I hate this one. 42
Are you interested in movies soundtracks? A lot. I often say when the soundtrack of the movie is good, then the movie is good. When music and images are synchronized, it touches me a lot. What about the actors, where you amazed by some performances? Of course. If the actors are not good even if the music is good, it doesn’t work. It is a holistic thing. Would you like to share something else about this art? Yes. A lot of people think that cinema is not art and when I am talking about movies with some people, they just see it as a way to escape themselfs. They don’t really find the message like in an artistic way. I am not talking about movies like ‘Machete’ which is a big joke. There is no message. Cinema is an art because it shows something bold. When you rewatch a movie, do you think you see it in a different ways? Some of them, yes. Like animations. I love rewatching them because they are a mind break. You stop thinking about anything else and not only. For example the french movie ‘Astórix and Obélix. Mission Cléôpatre’. Funny movie but every time I watch it I am like ‘Oh, this reference. I didn’t get it last time.’ It is always a like a surprize to watch it. And few words about your favourite movies... Lord of the rings, Big fish Edward Scissorhands, Die hard, James Bond, all of Marvel... It is a long list. And one interesting fact here: When Mailen’s mother bought her HVR ‘Lord of the rings. Fellowship of the ring’, she was not really excited but after watching the movie, she was rewatching it every single day almost until the second movie of the trilogy came out. That is a fan! :) Maybe if you pass by Aristomenous house some afternoon, you can join Mailen’s movie universe in our living room!

interview with a local volunteer giwrgos Hello, how are you? Hey! Thanks for giving me the chance to say things about me. My pleasure and thank you for accepting! What would you like to share about you? I’m Giwrgos (Γιωργος), I’m 24 years old and I’m a volunteer since 8 years now. That is nice! How did you find out about the Youth Center and what made you become a volunteer? A friend of mine brought me there when we were in high school for salsa lessons and I liked the way they work in the Youth Center, so I wanted to be a part of it. After a while I’ve been teaching salsa, but at the moment I cannot because of my free time. What else do you like to do in your free time besides volunteering at the Youth Center? I like a lot to walk around the city, go out with friends and to watch movies. Perfect! What kind of movies do you like? I like comedies and psychological thrillers. And do you have a favourite movie? Which one is it? I don’t think that I have a favourite movie but not too long ago I saw a psychological thriller that I liked a lot. It’s called “Get out!” (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=DzfpyUB60YY). It’s a really nice movie. 44
I will try it, thanks for the recommendation. You’re welcome! (Hey, I didn’t say that!) Do you have a favourite character from a movie or a series? Yeah, my favourite character is “Forest Gump” because he went running through all the USA and when he got bored of it he just stopped and went home. That was a good choice to do! How about your favourite actor? Morgan Freeman, because he has the best voice that you could hear in every movie, series...in everything, actually. It makes you relaxed and makes you trust the narrative line. If it were to compare your life with a movie and with a movie character, what would you pick? Kung Fu Panda! Why is that so? Because the panda is bored of everything and fat, like me but at the end he’s successful and becomes the dragon master. That’s an awesome comparison, ‘ll watch the movie to see the ending! Thank you very much for your time! Thanks for choosing me for this interview and it was nice to talk!

In the previous week, 7th -12th of May, Thessaloniki received one on-arrival training. Twenty-six EVS volunteers of different organizations met in STAY hostel to understand better their roles as volunteers but also their rights. I was very excited about this, especially because I would like to meet other volunteers and understand the different contexts of a EVS on Greece. Although the time for meeting all of them was short and understanding how the realities can be so different, even in the same city. The diversity of the projects was also very interesting and knowing some personal projects gave me couple of interesting ideas too. One thing that I really 46
appreciate in the work with volunteers is the motivation (when is the right one) and the willing to make things happen and it was very nice to see that in some of them. The training was well-planned and the presence of National Agency of a positive point. However, all of us felt that the training should had been a little adapted to the circumstances of the last months. But there was an effort to listen the volunteers and their needs and that is positive. Taking part on the training and talk with other participants is also important for thinking about us and our hosting organization. Any organization, project or volunteer is perfect but there are some that make an effort for be in accordance with ERASMUS+ and guidelines. After listen most of the volunteers, I felt grateful. Comparing some realities with mine help me realize that after all I got lucky with my organization and that they try to elucidate us about the EVS on our arrival, they try to follow us and understand what they can do better when the things do not go as supposed. That is very positive in my opinion.

PLASTIC FREE For those who support environment friendly lifestyle, Radikala (Recycling Awareness Design Innovation Kalamata Association) has the right point. This Swedish nonprofit NGO is based in Kalamata, Greece. Its main activity is raising awareness about environment and health through involving citizens in waste recycling efforts combined with physical activity. Since 2 June, 2018 together with the help of 1- month-volunteers we'll make our town less plastic. Bought water/cola/other bottled drink? After the last drop save the plastic and bring it to Hamid Perseas Roshangar, our active volunteer. Plastic after being Vshredded (bike-shredders) by school children during their sport hours, will become the material for sailboats. At the end of June freshly made boats will be put on water for the first time. It will also help children in acquiring new skills. Stay tuned and be involved! www.radikala.org Radikalaproject@gmail.com Facebook/Radikalaproject 50
