In our little library there are more than 500 books on several languages. You can find books on Greek, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian... The library is open for everybody who loves books. All you need to do is to come here, choose the book and register it in the Info point & you will have 15 days to read you book, if you need more time make sure you also come and let it know in info point in advance. Λοιπον, come and visit our library, you will find something for you. Gialova Cleaning Action

his Saturday 25th may, almost 20 volunteers, (Greek volunteer and EVS volunteer ) gathered around an ecological project to clean the beach of Dilavi . After a early wake up (to prevent working on the sun during mid-day as it just would be too hot) people arrived at 10 to the Gialova laguun, one of the most important natural park of the Peloponnese . This park has the label ‘’Natura 2000’’, as it conists a fragile eco system where you can meet chameleons, turtles, rare bird… The idea of the cleaning action was to participate at the protection of this amazing place. meanwhile to get opportunity to enjoy beau-

tiful nature, do good and perhaps also meet some new people. After taking a look around people split into two groups and the cleaning could began. During cleaning action participants discovered an amazing beach but lot of trash around. As some people just don’t understand that beach and sea is not a huge bins for rubbish. But let’s not loose the hope on humankind because of it! ;) After more or less 3 hour of cleaning , the beach was immaculate and volunteers decided to take a rest on the magnificent beach of Voidokilia, because fun comes after work!

EVS Cafes are ment to be small informative seminars about project called European Voluntary Service (EVS) - what it is, how to take part of it, why and so on! Also to get direct info from people who have already taken part in EVS.

OTHER EUROPEAN VOLUNTEERS IN GREECE

As you might know, in the Kentro Neon and in other organizations in Kalamata there are European Volunteers collaborating in different projects related to art, society, culture, media, health or environment… but we are not the only ones!! In other parts of Greece other volunteers like us are doing other interesting projects and are developing its skills in the field they chose to work in. This week we will present you the volunteers from the project “MediaArt”, located in Serres. We will know more about Nerea, Erik, Andre, Umit and Marion’s life in Greece, their opinion about EVS and their project in particular… we will see that not everything is so perfect as we could have expected when we first started to think about EVS but we always learn about everything and we hope that the whole experience is a positive point in our lives. Let’s read what they wanted to share with us!!! • In which EVS project are you taking part? We are taking part in the MediArt project of Praxis organization, in Serres. We are working in a radio, and promoting UNESCO activities. The Radio is Rodon FM where we are doing broadcast, spots and blogging news about youth action. 12

• Which were the reasons why you decided to do EVS? Is it greatful enough or there are some things you don’t agree or you feel are different from what you expected in case you had some expectations? Erik: I choose to do a EVS because one my friend did before me and he told me about this project. For me this project is nice just I thought that the place was different. Andres: I love to travel and meet people from different cultures, so EVS gives me the opportunity to be integrated in the community, not just being a tourist. I expected to learn Greek but our work and lifestyle are in English, so this was a big dissapointment. Umit: First thing was forcing to me to improve my English level beside this to meet new people, this is what I want. Well, just I expected that was more cheap in Greece, but it is absolutely not! We spend our time mostly at home, which is some dissapointing for me. However, my project quite satisfices me. Nerea: I decided to do an EVS because I would travel, improve my English and meet people from around the world. For me the only problem in my EVS is the project, is not how I expect and they are not following some of the bases of an EVS like have a real Mentor. I think is about luck, but an EVS is an awesome service because you have the opportunity to be focus in your project because you don’t have to be worried about rent or bills.

Marion: I decided to do an EVS to have the opportunity to travel as a volunteer, to meet the population, to be somebody else that a tourist in holidays. It is also a great project to meet people from all Europe, to build a European citizen conscience. This EVS project corresponds to my expectations. • Which is your daily work in your project, could you describe it so we can have an idea in mind? Andres: The workplace is a local radio. We have to do the technical support for the morning broadcast, what is in Greek and is made by our boss or another person. Once per week, each one of us have one hour to do our own broadcast about whatever we want, speak about we decide and play our music. Sometimes we have to do a special broadcast about the UNESCO international days (for example International Water Day) to explain why this day is important, how it borns, etc. By other way, every day we post some interesting news in the webpage and blog of the organization. These articles are about art competitions, local and international events, local news…

Nerea: Every day some of us (we are 6) are going to the radio at 9 to support the morning broadcast and write on the blog the news of the day about youth in action. After all of us we are going at 10 to work in the other projects that we have (they are changing every week) like make a video about some action in our city (Serres). Every day one of us has a personal broadcast, we choose the topic and we are completely free in this hour. Erik: my daily work is in addition to the broadcast, do edit of video , work with photoshop and with the blog of organization . Marion: We are 6 volunteers and every morning one of us manages the broadcast morning host by one or two journalists. We have to ensure the technical part. Every day, we create articles for our blog, about European topics, UNESCO campaigns…I am doing a broadcast with another volunteer, Nerea, about the women in the modern society (http://theotherhalfbroadcast.blogspot.gr/). I had also my personal project which was: teaching history of art in an municipal art school of Serres mostly for teenagers. Umit: Updating our blog strongly had told by the manager (maybe every week).Except that

radio broadcasting,making some movies and posters about International special events which is excist in the radio. • In which way have you improved, developed or adapted your project? Which new iniciatives/decisions have you created or put in common? Marion: We just decided few months ago to organize better the work, share the tasks to be more efficient. Andre: We create a schedule to organize our work in a better way and try to be more productive. Six volunteers work and live together, so we share the tasks both at work and at home. Umit: I was working on project with myself so far. But now I had learned teamwork, sharing feelings more.:) Erik: everyone have a different project about the your specific competences. Nerea: Out of the radio each of us has our own project, in my case I’m going two days a week to a center were they are doing therapy with horses for disabled people. I chose this own project because I’m social worker so it uses to be something related with your own studies. • Do you think in any future collaboration/cooperation with other people in a more open/global environment? Andre: Of course, I would like to continue

with this kind of work, and maybe try luck in UNESCO or another important organization. Umit: This is really enough experience for me to stay in abroad which is more than 5 motnhs. So I want to expand my contact and cooperate in a new job or business. I don’t know what it will happen in the future but sounds amazing after Greece. Erik: I don’t now just i will see what the future will have for me. Nerea: Yes, sure. I discovered a lot of ways to still in this “world”. I have in mind to do a Leonardo Da Vinci and after our mid-term seminar we know a lot of possibilities to continue working in this global cooperation. Marion: With Nerea, we are thinking about continue our broadcast via skype and put it on our blog or maybe still in Rodon FM. I would have the opportunity to be involved in European projects in the future maybe by a youth exchange or a Leonardo. • This is your free space to write about anything you feel you want to share/ propose/show or teach, about your project, your own experience or your global idea of life: Nerea: I would like to share how important have been for me this EVS because I just have 3 weeks more so I start to have a global vision. For this has been an opportunity know about other cultures because I’d been sharing a flat and work with other 5 people from around the world. Now I can understand more how other people are working and my mind is more open.

Erik: For me the EVS project in general is very very nice opportunity, just choose the project that you really want do. About this project I thought that it was going to be more interactive and with more possibility. Andres: It would be great keep in touch with

other volunteers who are living through the same experience, because maybe we can do something big in the future. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lose the contact!!

Georgia G - bright young lady on her way to become a youth worker • Present yourself in a few words: who are you, how old are you, what did you study, what are your hobbies Hi! I am Georgia and I am 25 years old. I studied Management and Business Administration in Athens and then I continued my studies in the Netherlands where I did my Master’s degree for one year. I really like tennis but I don’t have so much time to play or practice any more. I also like swimming and now that the weather is better I would be glad to swim again!! • When and how did you discovered the Youth Center? Even though I am from Kalamata, unfortunately I didn’t know about the Youth Center till this September. As I was away the last years, I didn’t have the chance to hear or learn anything about the Youth Center. I am lucky that I heard about it in September from a friend of mine. Actually, the story is a bit complicated but I will try to 16

make it clear for you. A friend of mine that we were in the same university went Erasmus in Liege, Belgium and she met an Italian guy there in 2010. Two years later he decided to come to Greece first to work and then to do an EVS programme. And guess where he decided to do his EVS? Of course in Kalamata! So, the girl who is my friend asked me if I knew anything about the Youth Center in Kalamata. I said that it is the first time that I heard about the Youth Center and about EVS in general. She wanted to come to Kalamata to be a volunteer with her Italian friend so she came in Kalamata in August (or maybe September... I don’t remember well) and she tried to meet with Filaretos or Fotini to ask whether she could be a volunteer. I remember meeting with Fotini in a cafeteria at the beach and we said a few things about the programme and the Youth Center. It was really nice and my friend was really excited since she was told that she may come to Ka-

lamata to stay and become a volunteer in the Youth Center. That’s the first time that I heard about the Youth Center. It is so strange that I heard about the youth center from a person that does not live in Kalamata, not even in Greece! By the way, did you realize who are the two persons that told me about the Youth Center? They were Angela and Gianluca! I am lucky to know about the Youth Center and to meet the people involved in this project because I had the opportunity to learn about Social Youth Development-K.A.NE. which was offering a really interesting job. As you can see, this coincidence changed my life and I now work at K.A.NE. in a field that is very interesting and new for me as I had never heard about it before. • Do you take part in some workshops? I was really interested in Tai Chi workshop that takes place

in the Youth Center this year. I started it and I was really eager to continue it but 3 months after I started it, I stopped going to this workshop because the time was not convenient for me anymore. I hope I could start following some workshops from September on and I would be mainly interested in having workshops in languages, preferably French or Spanish in order to remember them and be able to have a decent conversations. • What is your favorite place in Kalamata? It is definitely the beach and I really like that there are so many different kind of places that you can visit around the city where you can swim. • Give 3 things you cannot live without. Water, water and water!!! My friends used to call me happy hippo! :-) I drink so much water (you will see me especially now in the summer!) that I could definitely not live without it. • Which languages do you speak? Which language would you like to learn?

I speak English (I think so at least since I am answering your questions :-p) and a little bit of French even though some of the French volunteers here make fun of me and they think that I cannot speak French. But actually it is true that I don’t remember most of the words in French but I always complain that it is their accent or the fact that they speak too fast that makes it difficult for me to understand the language but to be honest I don’t remember a lot in French. I also know a bit of Spanish since I tried to learn while I was in the university in Athens. Aaaa, and I think that I know Greek! I would really like to learn Russian because it is different and challenging to learn it.

• If a genie gives you the chance to create your own business/firm/society, what would it be? Hmm... That’s a difficult question... I am not sure what kind of firm I would create. Since I work at K.A.NE. I have seen that there is a need for a youth hostel in Kalamata, with a big conference room where various activities could take place during seminars or educational trainings. Another idea could be to create a travel agency since I like travelling a lot! However, there is nothing concrete so far in my mind. Tell the genie to wait a bit till I find out what kind of business I would like to create. If (s)he comes now, could I change the question/wish? Interviewer: Manuela

After several travels around Europe I needed to make a small break and work a little in YC to earn a lot of money for my future trips. And after couple of weeks securing Youth Center both day and night & being adorable waiter in cafe I am ready to go for another trips! As I know many-many different & interesting people in the Youth Centre and they all have given me great advice about traveling, also this time I didn’t had to be disappointed when I went to visit magnificent small but bright country - Estonia. BTW, did you knew that they have their very own language called ESTONIAN and it’s nothing similar to Slavic languages at all. It is little bit similar to Finnish language and it’s like singing, lot of vowels almost every word stressed on 1st syllable, interesting, oh, they also have 14 cases, so perhaps it’s not the easiest languages, but still - impressive.

So from the beginning at first I went to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia - stunning medieval old town (what looks like a heart from certain corner) balanced with modern city centre. Symbiosis of ancient values and nowadays technology have well merged there. I saw impressive TV tower and outdoor concert stage called “Lauluväljak”, that was told to be full of Estonians singing all together & having good time every 5 years, next event like this is being held on summer 2014, so I might come back ;)

I also visited impressive, modern & functional Kumu Art Museum, what earned European Museum of the Year Award in 2008, later on had a great evening in the nightlife of Tallinn. Everything was just awesome until the very moment I got hungry and went to one descent looking restaurant, where I almost fainted as waiter offered me to taste their speciality - bear meat??!?! Oeh, it made my almost cry, I just declined politely and run as far from this place as I could… 19

Shocked as I was I just run around the city randomly and totally lost but gladly with a help of kind locals I was able to find train station to take a train to reach Türi - the spring capital of Estonia that my friend is from of. As it is springtime now I was especially lucky, they had many different events going on there, the big flower-fest and much more (not too much, as it’s just a small city with around 5000 inhabitants, but still). I’m not sure should I brag with it, but in flower-fest I met a celebrity, divine & really beautiful creature called Murumoor - she is the mascot of Türi. We got to know each other and she was gladly ready to company me during part of my holiday in Estonia.

As Murumoor had a summerhouse with sauna near wetland called Soomaa (meaning Land of Bogs) in South-West Estonia and I had never swam in bog before so of course I accepted her offer to go to have small sauna-party there ;) I understood that average Estonian is using sauna at least once-twise per week, hmmm, anyway after sauna it was perfect to jump in to refreshing, sludgy and mucky but still clean bog-lake. We played around with mud and then swim a bit in this peaceful and untouched nature surrounded by tender sunlight fondeling above us, slight waves of wind with neat pile of fresh air everywhere. Oeh, makes me already want to go back there! I could say it was total positive cultural shock for me.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway – Siddartha by Herman H

For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) is Hemingway’s account of the Spanish Civil War, which he served personally in as a war correspondent. The novel, which is widely considered as one of his finest, tells the story of one Robert Jordan, an American volunteer in the International Brigade (a republican guerilla faction during the war consisting of foreign volunteers). The novel covers a variety of themes, some of which might already be familiar to Hemingway fans, such as courage, comradery, death, love and of course the social issues and revolutionary and reactionary ideologies that are connected to the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway’s minimalist prose and direct approach is combined with beautiful imagery of love, violence, death and destruction and even has a few beautiful stream-of-consciousness parts that create a vivid and elaborate scenes not too common in Hemingway’s other work. This is one of my all time favorite novels and is best enjoyed with a glass of whiskey, a cigar and some added contemplation about your life, death and the meaning of true courage.

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell – Nine-

teen Eighty-Four (1949) or just 1984 is British author George Orwell’s most famous piece of work, and arguably one of the most socially and politically important works of fiction in the 20th century. The novel is Orwell’s depiction of a dystopian totalitarian/authoritarian state with an omnipresent government that practices brainwashing, historical revisionism and a persecution against individualism to absolutely control its population. The historical context of the novel is the aftermath of the second world war, where Orwell’s experience and fears as an observer and journalist of the rise and fall of Nazism, Fascism and Communism are transformed into this remarkable work of fiction. The book is considered one of the most vivid and realistic depictions of a possible complete totalitarian state and has had considerable impact on our culture, both by vocabulary from the book being directly adapted into the English language and influence on the general political mindset. It has the honor of being probably the single most terrifying book I have ever read, not because of violence, horror or monsters but because that the reality it depicts, a society where the social control is so total and complete that the individual human spirit gets utterly destroyed, it seems so absolutely conceivable and realistic. And that is absolutely terrifying.

The film is a historical drama set in the late Muromachi period of Japanese history. It deals with the theme of conflict between nature and man, symbolized by the struggle of Japanese animal gods against the rapidly growing and industrialized human civilization. The main character, Ashitaka, is an exiled prince that must reconcile the animal gods of the wild forest with an invading human group of miners intent on exploiting its resources. In doing so, he meets the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, an orphan girl rescued and raised by wolves who is intent on destroying the human, and the movie’s message is exemplified in Ashitaka’s personal mission: “To see with eyes unclouded by hate.” The movie is for me the perfect example of Miyazaki’s mastery, the beautiful animated landscapes and characters accompanied by an epic orchestral soundtrack and of course, a thoughtful and piercing message. Miyazaki is one of Japan’s most popular directors, being the first ever to win an Oscar award for a Japanese animated film (Spirited away in 2001) and continuing to receive critical acclaim for his large number of films. I would recommend his work to anyone, regardless of whether you have any previous interest in Japanese animation, cinema or culture.

Casablanca – Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic

drama film directed by Michael Curtiz. The film stars Hollywood icons Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and is set in Casablanca, Morocco during world war II. It focuses on a man torn by his love for a woman (Bergman) and the need to save her husband, a Czech resistance leader, from the Nazis by helping them get out of Casablanca. It came out during the middle of the World War and depicts anti-Nazi sentiments and support for the French resistance movement. Although it contained A-list Hollywood celebrities and a high budget it was only one of 100’s of Hollywood movies coming out of the time and not expected to receive anything but an ordinary reception. Despite that it won 3 Academy awards, including best picture, and has through its memorable writing, soundtrack and main characters become one of the most iconic Hollywood movies of all time. I recommend it as an example of a classic old-time Hollywood movie, a love story and a political drama with fantastic example of early classical cinema.

Bonjour! This month, if you have time and patience, you can try to cook... Profiteroles! Ingredients • 250ml (1 cup) water • 80g butter, at room temperature, chopped • 150g (1 cup) plain flour, sifted • 3 eggs, at room temperature, lightly whisked

Creme patissiere • 435ml (1 3/4 cups) milk • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthways, seeds separated • 3 egg yolks • 70g (1/3 cup) caster sugar • 50g (1/3 cup) plain flour, sifted

• Step 1 Place the water and butter in a saucepan. Bring just to the boil. Remove from heat and use a wooden spoon to beat in flour until combined. • Step 2 Cook, stirring, over medium heat for 2-3 minutes or until the mixture forms a ball and comes away from side of pan. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool. • Step 3 Gradually add egg, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition, until the dough is thick and glossy. • Step 4 Preheat oven to 200°C. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Place heaped dessertspoonfuls of dough, about 3cm apart, on trays. • Step 5 Use wet hands to pat down any peaks of dough. Sprinkle trays with water to create steam. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until puffed and golden. • Step 6 Turn off oven. Use a knife to pierce thve base of each profiterole. Place profiteroles in oven for 28

20 minutes to dry out. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. • Step 7 For the creme patissiere, warm milk and the vanilla seeds in a saucepan. Whisk yolks and sugar in a bowl until thick. Whisk in flour, then milk mixture. • Step 8 Return to pan and cook, whisking, over low heat for 5 minutes or until mixture thickens. Cover surface with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge to chill. • Step 9 Spoon creme patissiere in a piping bag fitted with a 5mm nozzle. Push nozzle into the base of each profiterole and fill with creme patissiere. Bon appétit!
