NEW SCHOOL YEAR, NEW LOOK KHS CREATES SPACES FOR STUDENTS

A

s students left school for summer break, the KHS maintenance team remained busy by renovating the

school.

The team, which includes summer student workers, district maintenance staff and some contractors, installed new lighting and furniture in four classrooms in the C wing and some hallways.

“Better lighting and furniture in the classrooms should improve students ability to complete work. The lighting will provide energy efficiency in those rooms through the use of LED fixtures with daylight harvesting and dimming capabilities as well as occupancy sensors,” project manager Mark Payton said.

In addition to new lighting and furniture, KHS has also developed a Collaboration Lab in B102.

“The Collaboration Lab is a new working space off of the library in the B hallway.

It is designed to give classes an alternative

setting for group work or individual work with a variety of furniture and a Chromebook cart. I believe it fosters discussion and group work in a new way not available in most typical classrooms, and can be a desirable change of pace,” principal Jill Maras said.

The testing center in the library has also been updated.

“Over the summer we have moved our PASS and testing center into the library.

The reason for this is to provide a larger space for the testing center, and to move both into the center of the building making it easier for all to access it from the cafeteria, and C110 study halls, as well as the rest of the building,” Maras said.

Maras and Payton hope that these renovations will improve students’ ability to learn through increased comfort.

“Renovations like these will help Kaneland stay up to speed with the latest educational standards,” Payton said.

fter more than ten years of having the same locker system, Kaneland High School now has a new way of assigning lockers, along with a new and improved lock system that guarantees no stress.

“Students will be assigned lockers, as they have in the past and will be in the future, and then those will be their lockers until they graduate.

So whatever location a senior class will vacate will become the incoming freshmen class’ area when they enter KHS,” assistant principal Carri Oslager said.

for the manpower that has to change the combinations on every locker every summer.

By having the same locker each year, students will already know where their locker is and what their combination is.

However, their locker information will still be available on Tyler.

“This will alleviate quite a bit of chaos on the first day of school,” Oslager said.

Also, this means students lockers will be located in the same hallways all four years, and will have the same staff members around for support.

Along with having the same locker throughout high school, the locks within each locker got changed.

“The physical locker will stay the same, but the lock itself will change,” Oslager said.

The mechanism that changes the locker combinations is known as the tumbler.

“The wear and tear on the tumblers when changing the combinations each

year leads to the mechanisms wearing out faster than necessary. This leads to replacement costs that can be alleviated through a more efficient process,” Oslager said.

Putting in the new locker system and having the same locker until you graduate adds on to one less thing students have to worry about, and makes it easier to get from point A to point B without being late due to locker difficulties.

“At the start of school every year, it is a nightmare for kids. It’s putting in a new system making it easier,” Oslager said.

BACKPACKING THROUGH THE HALLWAYS

T

his coming school year all students will be allowed to carry their backpacks throughout the day. Before, only certain students were given permission to carry their bags with them during the school day.

Administration decided to change the “no backpack rule” after last year’s increased requests of students to carry their backpack.

“Over time we had numerous students who needed their backpack throughout the day for a variety of very good reasons.

Exceptions were made to the rule and it became hard to communicate who could and couldn’t carry their bag. This caused us to relook at the rule,” principal Jill Maras said.

Students will have to respect teacher’s requests regarding the location of backpacks to maintain the safety of the building.

“We believe we can maintain the security of the building while still letting students bring their backpacks. Teachers

will need to be creative with the location of backpacks depending on the volume of students carrying them,” Maras said.
