which offers demonstrations, classroom lectures and general sessions led by experts on current topics.
As an emergency room doctor and a first-generation rancher, Dr. Richard Thorpe offers a unique perspective as president of Texas’s largest livestock organization.
“These were our people,” Thorpe says of those early events.
With a solid reputation and a medical degree as assets, Thorpe was asked to represent the organization on the Texas Beef Council. He later served on the executive committee of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), where he chaired both the Human Nutrition Research Committee and the Culinary and Beef Innovation Group.

From there, the couple became regulars at TSCRA meetings and functions.

rowing up in suburban Dallas, Richard Thorpe was obsessed with all things cowboy. In grade school, doodles and drawings of cowboys filled his notebooks and his thoughts. And then in high school in the ’70s, things got serious. “I drew up the ranch brand we use today during my junior year in study hall,” the first-generation rancher says. It was an unlikely hobby for a boy who was introduced to the outdoors through hunting and fishing, but Thorpe had a purpose. Today, the child fully determined to live life as a cowboy has grown into a cattleman, currently serving as president of Texas’s oldest and largest livestock organization, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA). “I had a lot of goals and a vision, and part of that was to one day get to where I could own a ranch,” Thorpe says. “While growing up, I was very fortunate to have close friends whose families owned ranches, and we would spend weekends and summers there. I liked it so much that I decided at a very young age that I wanted to live on a ranch. “Why would you live in the city when you can live there?” he says of the country.
“It has been a privilege working with Richard and Karen for more than 25 years,” says Brian Meeks, branch manager of the lender’s San Angelo office. “They’re great people who understand and love ranching life and are passionate about the Texas cattle industry.”
Thorpe is midway through his two-year stint as president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
“As a doctor, I’ve always pushed to prove that beef is healthy and has a very important role in the American diet,” Thorpe says.
A Voice for Private Landowners A TSCRA director since 2006, Thorpe began his two-year term as president in March 2016.
When he’s not practicing medicine, Dr. Richard Thorpe enjoys working cattle on his ranch in west-central Texas.
The Thorpes still live on the first ranch they purchased in 1985. As adjoining and nearby properties have become available over the years, they’ve turned to Central Texas Farm Credit, a local lending co-op, to finance additional purchases. To further diversify, they recently added high fencing and a lodge on one part of the ranch where they plan to begin a deer operation. Central Texas Farm Credit helped finance the construction of the lodge, as well.
Thorpe currently splits his time between TSCRA commitments, the ranch and the emergency room at nearby Abilene Regional Medical Center. He’s quick to note that while he may spend more time away from the ranch, his family, especially wife Karen, more than pitch in.
“I really love this association, and I’m so privileged to have been asked to be a director and officer,” he says. “The organization has a very proud history, and I want to carry that torch on.”
From Rodeo Cowboy to Prominent Cattleman
“When I’m at the hospital or doing something for TSCRA, our ranch doesn’t lose a step,” he says. “Karen knows as much about ranching as I do — we both came up through the school of hard knocks.” Established in 1877 to curb livestock theft, the TSCRA represents about 50,000 ranchers and beef producers who manage approxiAnd while neither of them grew up in ranching, they are makmately 4 million head of cattle on 76 million acres of range and ing sure that their love of the ranching way of life is being passed pastureland, primarily in Texas and Oklahoma. Thorpe and his wife, Karen, own Mesa T Ranch, headquartered in Winters, a small town in west-central Texas. They raise cow-calf, stocker and feedlot cattle in two counties. Karen and daughter Tami also run a blue roan horse breeding operation. The couple made the decision to settle in the rural area in 1985, when Thorpe, an emergency room doctor, graduated from medical school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. “We chose Winters because land was affordable, and it was good land that I thought we could do something with agriculturally,” he says. The location also offered opportunities for Thorpe’s medical career, with four hospitals within driving distance. Both Thorpe and his wife had rodeo in their past (they met at a rodeo in their twenties), so starting out with a horse operation seemed like a logical fit. Over time, however, Thorpe became intrigued with the business aspect of raising cattle.
“The cost of membership is by far the best value a rural landowner can get,” Thorpe says. “We represent mainly cattle ranches, but we also have members who have horses or recreational property.”
comes from a family in the Red Angus seedstock business, and the couple’s son, Scott, and his wife, Misty, have three children who visit the ranch often.
In addition to actively promoting the health benefits of beef, Thorpe has been a strong advocate for private property rights.
“I’m very proud to be a first-generation rancher, but I’m really excited to see the third generation on the ground,” Thorpe says of his grandchildren. “Since I didn’t get the chance to take over a family ranch, my goal has always been to establish a ranch that could be passed on for generations. I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.”
“I know how hard it is to get land and how much it means to have it to raise a family on,” Thorpe says. “It’s a very personal, horrible thing if you’ve ever been a victim of eminent domain — for you to spend your whole lives building a ranch and then to have someone come in and say, ‘we’re taking it.’”
“That was when I evolved from being a cowboy into a cattleman — and suddenly, the picture got a whole lot bigger.” The Thorpes starting attending TSCRA School for Successful Ranching events, the organization’s flagship educational program,

Fortunately, there’s a document that offers valuable information for every reading style and level of interest — the annual report. “When stockholders can see here’s where we were last year and here’s where we are this year, it’s really beneficial,” he says.

Dan Wierzbowski, FCBT director of financial reporting and SOX compliance, also starts with the summary, which presents net income, loan volume, patronage distributions and other data from elsewhere in the report on one page. Return on assets and return on equity indicate how effectively the company is generating earnings — the higher the ratios, the better. “At a glance, the five-year summary gives both the historical trends and a snapshot of the company’s key financial indicators,” Wierzbowski says.

The inside scoop FOR ALABAMA AG CREDIT EMPLOYEES | JUNE 2017 Make Tomorrow Better Than Today
Eat Your Vegetables Day • June 7 They come in every color of the rainbow, almost every believable shape and size, and the flavors they bring to the table are absolutely astounding. Whether you’re just talking about the staple vegetables like carrots, potatoes and onions that we all get from the store, or the diverse range of vegetables that come from around the world like bok choy and watercress, we’ve all been eating them our whole lives. Eat Your Vegetables Day is dedicated to getting people to eat their veggies, and also to spread awareness of their diversity and necessity in a healthy diet.
History of Eat Your Vegetables Day The history of Eat Your Vegetables Day starts with an awareness of nutrition and the role it plays in a healthy lifestyle. Vegetables have always played an important role in the lives of humans, all the way back to when we were simply hunter-gatherers. Vegetables were one of the hallmarks of civilization — once crops were planted, we had to be there to tend them as they grew. As we cemented our ability to produce vegetables they stopped being an opportunistic part of our diet, and instead became a foundation part of our culture and cuisine. As time went on, we established that there were benefits to eating them, but it wasn’t until much later that science confirmed what we already knew. Eventually, it was established that yes, they were a vital source of nutrients that were hard or impossible to get from an animal source. These nutrients can help to prevent heart disease and decrease bone loss, offset diabetes, and even improve the health of your hair and skin.
why Visit your Local Farmers Market? Not only do you get to choose freshly picked, in-season produce at its peak in flavor and nutrition, but fruit and vegetables are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients.
opportunity
As an ag lender, these markets offer a great opportunity for us to connect with local growers. You are encouraged to visit your local markets, connect with the growers and follow up with them to see if we can help. Consider setting up a table and providing AAC branded plastic bags or bottled water, or sponsoring the market’s signage. Remember, helping these markets thrive helps our growers and local communities thrive; which in turn build our business.

BOARD TO BOARD NEWSLETTER
December 2017
The regulatory and business environment has made maintaining a high return on assets (ROA) ratio crucial for the Farm Credit Bank of Texas (FCBT), prompting the bank’s board to approve a new spread on direct notes for the first time in more than 25 years. Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, the spread will change from 52 to 75 basis points on all new loans, loan renewals and loan modifications, phasing in the increase over time for associations. What will not change is the bank’s value proposition — to provide funding to the associations at or below its own cost of funds while absorbing the expense of the services it provides. The new spread should not have a negative impact on associations’ bottom line because the bank will offset the reduction in association net interest income with an increase in patronage. We want to emphasize that this decision was motivated by the need for a strong earnings profile Jimmy Dodson, Chairman
and ROA — not because of expenses or operational issues.
Reliable Financial Statements Require Strong Internal Controls
FCBT Chairman Jimmy Dodson shared a detailed white paper on the new spread with association chairmen in mid-November, and staff members are holding follow-up discussions with association boards and management teams. The bank’s board will also meet with association chairmen or designees in Austin on Dec. 12 to discuss the spread and the progress on the district’s FarmView lending systems.
Institutions have made progress in strengthening their internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) under a new framework that the System adopted in December 2015. Compliance kicked off in 2016 when the three System banks that did not at the time include an ICFR attestation in annual reports, including the Farm Credit Bank of Texas, assessed their internal controls.
We encourage you to review the white paper and to contact the FCBT board if you have any questions.
Spread on Direct Notes to Associations Will Increase in 2018
COMMON GROUND NEWSLETTER
This year it has been the associations’ turn, as they prepare to comply with a new ICFR covenant in the general financing agreements (GFAs) that will go into effect in January 2018. Efforts to enhance controls also intensified when the System identified a need to evaluate segregation of duties and employees’ system access in order to potentially detect and prevent errors and fraudulent activity.
Concern for Community Shows in Hurricane Response The recent response to Hurricane Harvey demonstrated that Farm Credit’s support of agriculture and rural communities goes far beyond financing. Association loan officers personally checked on affected customers, in many cases offering to defer loan payments. Employees and directors cooked meals for flood victims, delivered feed and hay, and helped with evacuations and repairs. Institutions and employees also donated to hurricane relief, and the bank matched more than $16,000 in employee donations.
As associations work their way through the ICFR framework, boards are likely to see an increase in the number of issues reported on the Summary of Aggregated Deficiencies (SAD). Directors should view that as positive because it indicates that their organization is taking a close look at its processes so that it can close any gaps.
While the August storm caused hardship for some members and employees, it is not expected to have a material impact on the quality of the district’s loan portfolio. At the end of the third quarter, yearto-date earnings exceeded projections as a result of steady loan growth.
Adequately segregating duties could also require associations to add employees and realign roles. While working toward a stronger control environment can be stressful in the short term, raising awareness of ICFR’s importance and adding expertise in loan operations and other areas will be of great value.
We want to thank associations for the quick and caring response.

Capital Farm Credit and Southern AgCredit employees teamed together to feed thousands of hurricane victims, first responders and others in Silsbee, Texas, north of Beaumont. t 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, Lylla Joe’s alarm clock went off, signaling the start of what would be a long and unforgettable day. The Southern AgCredit marketing specialist sprang from her bed, quickly dressed and hurried to join a dozen of her co-workers at their office in Ridgeland, Miss. Six hours and almost 400 miles later, the group arrived in Silsbee, Texas, with 10,000 pounds of chicken in tow — ready to partner with a Capital Farm Credit team to serve hot meals to locals who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey in southeast Texas.
In years past, other associations had rushed to help Mississippi when hurricanes struck that state. This time, Mississippi was spared, but Southern AgCredit employees didn’t just sit back and count their blessings. “We knew it was our time to help,” Joe said. In the weeks after Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas’s Gulf Coast, images of people helping people flooded our televisions, newspapers and social media. The generous spirit and caring nature was no different within the Farm Credit family. “There has been an outpouring of calls, texts and e-mails sent our way in the wake

Merry Christmas Beat Holiday Stress It’s too late to start knitting everyone on your list a holiday sweater vest; you’re dreading sitting next to Uncle Ned at the family holiday dinner; and you forgot to buy your boss a present. Let’s face it, the holidays can be a tense time of year: While ‘tis the season to be jolly, ’tis also the season for stress galore! The holidays can bring with them many pressures, such as cooking a giant dinners, throwing a party, being around the whole family (even the ones you tend to avoid) and spending a chunk of your savings on gifts. Feeling overwhelmed during the holidays has become almost natural! We have some holly jolly news for you: There are simple steps you can take to minimize the amount of stress you feel this year: Giving the perfect gifts • Ask people what they want instead of scouring the earth to find the perfect gifts. • Shop early, when there is more of a selection. • Stick to your gift budget.
Here to Help You
LSAC social media graphic
Grow
Planning family get-togethers • Buy prepared foods, instead of cooking everything from scratch. • Ask others to bring their favorite dishes.
• Cook and freeze foods ahead of time. Scheduling time with family and friends • Simplify holiday commitments and traditions. Discuss with your family which traditions are most important to you and to them. It’s okay to re-evaluate past traditions. • Allow time for yourself. Remember to do things that you enjoy. • Avoid time crunches by making plans to visit some friends and family soon after the holidays. Managing your time • Set priorities and let go of impossible goals. • Stop to enjoy the fruits of your labor. • Take the time you need to finish tasks that are important to you. Don’t try to complete everything at once. • Ask others, including the kids, to help you complete chores. • Rest when your body tells you to. Coping with the holiday blues • Try something new. Take a vacation with a family member or friend. • Volunteer your time to help others. Spending time with those in need can help you feel less isolated. • If you are religious, take time to reflect on the spiritual significance of the holidays. • Try to appreciate the good things you have now instead of focusing on the past. • Stay active. Get out. Go for a walk. Window shop. • Get help if you need it. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help any time of the year.
