Welcome to beautiful Barbuda! We are delighted that you have come to explore our breath-taking eco-friendly paradise. A stay in Barbuda is the perfect antidote to stress. Barbuda exudes a peaceful tranquillity. The unhurried warm, friendly Barbudan people are always ready and willing to make your stay an unforgettable experience. Barbuda is best known for its deserted pink sand beaches, truly an awesome sight to behold. For those who want to bask in the sun and cool off in the crystal cool waters, nothing could be better. The coral reefs and the many underwater shipwrecks provide an excellent opportunity for snorkelling and diving. For those with a passion for wildlife, the abundance of fauna makes Barbuda a nature lover’s dream; many species of birds, wild donkeys, fallow deer and boar which can be sighted in the mangroves and along the hiking trails in the bush. There is also the peculiar wonder of the natural sink hole and the cave formations just waiting to be explored. However, a trip to Barbuda would not be complete without visiting the Frigate Bird Sanctuary which is home to over 5,000 Frigate Birds making it the largest nesting place in the Western Hemisphere. Whatever you chose to do while you are in Barbuda, I am confident that you will have a wonderful stay and that you will leave with fond memories that last a lifetime. Sincerely

Caribana Caribana
Caribana Barbuda’s Carnival, Caribana, keeps getting better and better each year. It bears little resemblance to the grand spectacle of the festivities in the larger islands; the four-day cultural festival has unique elements that make it memorable. Calypso, soca, seaside fun and jamming make it a special event not to be missed. This year’s Beautiful Barbuda | 3rd Edition 2011
festival was celebrated under the theme, “Culture, Splendour and Fun Again, Barbuda’s Caribana 2010.” Caribana commenced on May 20. The quiet and pristine calm of Barbuda was disrupted by the opening parade and ribbon cutting ceremony. Immediately afterwards, the youth ignited a firestorm

participants. Visitors consisting mostly of Antiguans as well as Barbudans in the diaspora and tourists alike flocked to the Beach Bash and Food Festival on Day two and indulged in the offerings: succulent dishes which showcased what Barbuda is best known for- fresh, delicious seafood and wildlife cuisine. Complemented with live entertainment, the island picnic could be simply described as having been a day of good clean fun. If the Beach Bash got your palate wet, then the All Star Show that featured local and regional artists was enough to satisfy your appetite for more entertainment. The Caribana Classic Horse Race on Day three was followed by the clash of the musical titans; - the Calypso Monarch Show, which is another display of the culture of the Barbudan people. Caribana concluded with the J’ouvert Madness and Last Lap Jump Up on the Whit Monday Holiday. The Last
That cocktail of wild, frenzied abandon climaxed with the “The Whit Weekend Bacchanal”. After the early morning jump up through the streets, revelers cooled down at the beach or just simply enjoyed the rest of the holiday seeing many attractions on the island. Traditionally, the marketing of Caribana has been low keyed, but over the past three years many visitors have begun to show a lot of interest in the festival. With WINAIR and the Barbuda Express (the island’s ferry service) offering scheduled runs between the two islands, Caribana 2010 had a sizeable crowd. After more than 21 years of existence, Caribana is poised to catapult itself to the next level and become a premier festival in the region. Accordingly, Barbudans are anxiously awaiting your visit to enjoy Caribana 2011. Barbuda is a special island in the Caribbean that I always wanted to visit for a long time so that I can better sell the destination to the many US travellers who need a private vacation on a natural, yet beautiful island. In June of 2010, I had the privilege of participating in the Antigua and Barbuda Familiarization trip called “Score 100” hosted by the New York Tourism Board. As an Antigua and Barbuda Specialist, I have been called to action on many events and promotions. I presently work with Protravel International (one of the largest in the industry) and am proud to be a Virtuoso Travel Specialist. Additionally, I work with Distinctive Honeymoons, a division of Protravel Inc. I love my work as I design and create the personalized destination weddings or honeymoons for clients throughout the Globe.

On the pier upon arrival, a warm welcome and sincere hugs came from the Lighthouse Bay Resort, General Manager Mr. Mo Sallah, Assistant Manager Terrence and naturally little Gigi at the helm; setting the pace for the remarkable Barbuda hospitality. The Staff made certain to know each guest by name and anticipated their personal needs. The personalized service was exceptional. Lighthouse Bay is an intimate all inclusive, boutique style resort. Imagine, strolling down the private pier, entering an open air lobby with the crystal clear blue water, pink sandy beach and breathtaking sunset as the backdrop. That was when my soul was captured by the beauty sending my mind and body to a peaceful place. The resort is intimate with large, well appointed suites. The complimentary wireless laptop and internet in addition to free international calls make this resort very desirable. The taste of homemade breads, fresh fruits and coconut French toast makes it a memorable breakfast. Fabulous dinner menus personalized to each guest while dining in the open air with the vista of the water and long beach satisfied all the senses. Experience Barbuda
Experience Barbuda Through the Eyes of the Children Greetings! My name is Takiyah Mussington. I live on the sister isle Barbuda where it is a nice place to live. To the bird watchers out there you can go to Frigate Bird Sanctuary to watch the birds fly around in the sky. There are some other beautiful birds on Barbuda, like the Barbuda Warbler, Egrets and of course many other tropical birds. And don’t forget the clearest, bluest water capped by beautiful pink sandy beaches. When you’re hungry, our land turtle, deer meat or fish is just fine. To those who would like to experience my island, come and enjoy our paradise. Come relax and enjoy our pink sand beaches, our birds, food and our sea creatures.
Hi, I am eight year old Rashaun Harry. I am a grade four student at the Holy Trinity Primary School. I love to write stories and play sports. I live in the Caribbean on a beautiful island called Barbuda. Barbuda has the most beautiful breathtaking beaches, eye catching pink sand and adventurous historical sites. Some of the historical sites are Martello Tower, Two Foot Bay, Bird Sanctuary, Darby Cave, Willy Bob and Codrington Lagoon. Barbuda is the home of interesting creatures like the Fallow Deer, Hawksbill Turtle, Frigate Bird, Wild Pig, Land Turtle, Guinea Fowl and Iguana. The weather is usually sunny and at nights it is very cool. The visitors who come to Barbuda would never be bored because there is so much to do like fishing, camping, hiking, swimming, exploring the caves and horseback riding too. Living in Barbuda is like living in your own paradise and you would love it too. Please come to Barbuda. I hope you make it here. You would have a wonderful time. Beautiful Barbuda | 3rd Edition 2011
19 Hello, my name is Ezekiel Francois. I am ten years old. I am in grade six at the Holy Trinity Primary School. Barbuda has one village and the people that live here are very friendly. For me, living in Barbuda is like a vacation every day because the island is very, very quiet. There are a lot of fun things to do. Sometimes I go to the beach for a swim, or to look sea grapes and coco plums. Other fun things are going camping and looking for crabs. So, if you are looking for a getaway vacation, you can come to Barbuda and relax with me at one of our beautiful hotels. If you are a music lover, you can also listen to the sweet melody of the Holy Trinity Pan Orchestra which I am a part of. We play every lunch hour at school, so drop by and experience our culture. You can go fishing at the National Park in the big, blue, Codrington Lagoon. In this lagoon, there are Frigate Birds in the Sanctuary and hundreds of other different birds. The beaches in Barbuda are well known for the famous pink sand. Gravenor Bay is one that is very shallow. It is so shallow, that you can walk very far out into the water. The
island also has a lot of history, like the many shipwrecks that have sank at Two Foot Bay. So now I have told you so much about my island, come and experience her for yourself. It is the perfect island paradise, my home, sweet home.
Hello! My name is Starr George. I am nine years old. I am a grade five student at the Holy Trinity Primary School. Barbuda is known for its historical sites and pink sand beaches. The Martello Tower is one of my favourite sites. It is a place where the British looked out for boats years ago. When I climb up to the top of Martello Tower I feel like I have power. There is a beach nearby, which is known as Pink Sand Beach. You can build sand castles and look for pretty seashells. It is fun to live in Barbuda because I can go to the lagoon to fish and swim. I like to cruise around the lagoon. It is safe and peaceful. I like to visit the Bird Sanctuary and watch the birds. The red pouch on the male is very fascinating. Hiking in Barbuda is awesome. The caves are magnificent. In Barbuda, the environment is so clean and no chemicals are given off in the air. So come to my home, Barbuda. You will have a blast! When you go back home, you will have memories that last and before you realize you are back again. www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Our History
Undoubtedly, the most significant family name where the development of Barbuda is concerned is the Codrington family, whose roots can be traced as far back as the medieval period in Gloucester and Bristol, England. The patriarch, Christopher, was a trustee to the sale of St. Lucia in 1663 and acquired lands in Antigua to set up no less than four plantations, including one he named ‘Betty’s Hope’. In 1684, King Charles II of England agreed to the lease of Barbuda to him and his brother, John, for the princely sum of ‘one fat sheep on request’, with the initial fifty-year lease agreement being signed on January 9, 1685. Codrington was to have full oversight over the 62 square mile island, including defence and the proceeds of salvage. It was the same Codrington who willed most of his holdings in Barbados, St. Lucia, and Antigua as well as parts of Barbuda to the Society for the Propagation of the Christian Religion in Foreign Parts, who were able to establish Codrington College

in Barbados, the oldest tertiary institution in this part of the world. Unlike other islands in the West Indies, Barbuda was not subject to sugar cane cultivation, but was more involved with the export of ground provisions, deer, cattle, horses and mules to Antigua. The lives of the slaves were more varied, with many being in much less arduous occupations such as cobbling, shipbuilding, masonry and blacksmithing. There were two uprisings in the 1740s however, not due to ill treatment on the part of the Codringtons, but more so to the cruelty of managers during the period. Owing to the entire island being under the control of one family entity, slaves were not ‘swapped’ as normally was the case, so family connections were particularly strong on Barbuda. The success of the model of slave ownership meant that the island soon became self-sufficient in the provision of labour, with the importation of slaves from Africa ceasing after 1761. Though the Codringtons mainly stayed in Barbados and England, they needed suitable accommodations when they were on island. The main structure created was Codrington Castle, which dominated Codrington village for about 220 years, was a succession of three different limestone structures on the same footprint contain-

ing a central courtyard. It had a threefold purpose, as a fortress, storage facility and administrative centre for the island. Next was River Fort, more commonly known as Martello Tower, which is today the most complete historical building on the island. Historical records are few, and there are conflicting reports as to whether the structure existed before the Codringtons’ arrival. Lastly, there was Highland House, believed to be built sometime after 1720. More of a vacation retreat than a permanent residence, it was built atop The Highlands, the highest elevation on the island, at 120 feet. All that remains of said residence are the floors, a cistern and the
lower level walls. Various overseers reportedly spent time there on a short term basis. Perhaps most significant was the transfer of ownership of Barbuda on a communal basis to Barbudans in the late 1800s. This development meant that no land on the island may be sold, with every Barbudan being given the right to a plot for house building. Investors and non-Barbudans must now get permission from the Barbuda Council for development projects. The right to their patrimony is perhaps the most significant component of what it is to be a Barbudan, and for this and many reasons, the Codrington family has made an indelible mark on life in Barbuda and their influence will likely be felt well into the future.

Highland House Ruin
Martello Tower Martello Tower (also referred to as River Fort) is 32 feet above sea level. It’s the most impressive and complete historical site on Barbuda, constructed around 1745. Martello Tower was used as part of a protective security system to prevent invasion by aggressive foreign powers which includes the Spanish and French naval vessels. Martello tower was also used as a signal station to the village of Codrington.
Situated in the north-eastern area of Barbuda is Highland House Ruin. The house was built around 1720 and was used as a retreat for the Codrington family whenever they were on island.

Coconut Plantation
Have you ever seen a coconut plantation before? If not, take a trip to Barbuda’s Coconut Plantation. These 250 acres of endless coconut trees can be seen from your way out of Codrington to River Wharf, but the best way to appreciate its naturalness is by a helicopter tour of Barbuda. Situation on a hilltop in the south-eastern area of Barbuda is Spanish Point. This limestone outcrop provides a clear view in all directions and is an ideal observation point. The area was used as a defence point during the colonial period whereby a structure was in place to store all weapons to fight its enemies.

The Ginnery This is the place where salt and cotton was stored from the days of slavery into the 1900’s. The salt was coated on the walls 10 years ago and one could see dates and quantities stencilled on the beams. Today, the Ginnery is used as the local government’s council hall. The Ginnery is located on Ginnery Street in the Capital, Codrington.
Holy Trinity Anglican Church
Two Foot Bay National Park This National Park was used for shelter by the Amerindians who used the caves. The presence of the old stone ruin and the well indicates that it was used in the colonial period. It was also used during the Codrington tenure for the mining of phosphate as evident by the phosphate caves. Today, most Barbudans use this national park as a camp site. It is also where you can find Gun Shop Cliff and Barbuda’s remarkable caves.
Indian Cave It is the oldest church to be established in Barbuda and was built in 1844 during the days of slavery. The Anglican is open daily for sightseeing and you are invited to the Holy Eucharist at 9.30am on Sundays and Sunday school at 3pm.

The Caves
Situated in the Two Foot Bay National Park is the one of the most interesting prehistoric sites in Barbuda; Indian Cave is where the two small Amerindian rock carvings (pertroglyphs) can be seen. Indian cave is small and compact, giving a mysterious feeling; it is not difficult to imagine the Amerindians who lived there long ago. The cave overlooks the north-eastern windward coast which was a lookout site for the Amerindians.
Darby Cave
A 45 minutes hike from Codrington Ruin also known as “Willy Bob” will take you to one of the most exciting and adventurous caves in Barbuda. On your way you might just happen to meet up with the land turtles, deers, guinea hens and other birds. Darby Cave, better known as “The Sink Hole” is a great wonder of the Caribbean, located on the northern side of the island. Some 400ft long and 85ft deep, it is known for its lush vegetation and self contained eco-system. As you climb down, you will discover the water falling from above called “The Silaga” and a variety of birds and fauna, enjoying this undiscovered paradise.

The Paradise of Pink Sand To many, the notion of spending a relaxing day of pleasant recreation down at the beach is most alluring. This could be — swimming, sunning, playing games and associating with friends and loved ones in the fresh unwrapped air, with the restful sound of surf in the background. While that is true of most beaches in the world, Barbuda‘s beaches with its pink, crystal sands holds a even more powerful attraction. Beautiful Barbuda | 3rd Edition 2011
The beaches with pink miniature sea shells and-lots of them-make Barbuda the Caribbean’s dream escape. Miles and miles of deserted white powdery beaches peppered with pink miniature gems stretch from River Landing in the south to Cedar Tree Point in the northwest. The sparkling, clear, blue ocean waters and white sandy beaches amid the profusion of pink shells are a magnet for tourists who return year after year to the island. The characteristic of a beach is determined by its sand. The miles of unspoiled beaches, due to the absence of human intrusion, fringed with nature’s lace –pink sand, makes these unique beaches like no other in the world. Many visitors have inquired about how this dynamic phenomenon of sand dyed pink came about? In short, Barbuda is surrounded by coral reefs and sand on

the beaches in different parts of Barbuda is differently-coloured because of the undersea coral reefs nearby. The ocean currents affect Barbuda by carrying different types of mineral deposits and sea creatures to her shores. These pink sand grains on some of the beaches are made of the same material as the white grains; however they are pink because of the red algae, commonly called reef cement, which has grown on the coral reefs. Reef cement protects the coral reef from destructive waves and storm surges. This mixture of pink and white sand is prevalent around the windward coast near Two Foot Bay. However, the miles of pink sand on the leeward side is as a result of the pink shells of tiny sea creatures. Unique to Barbuda, this array of brightly coloured pink shells has adorned the enchanting water’s edge for years.
The splendour of Barbuda’s pink sandthe array of colour and texture- fascinates some people to the point that they have taken up collecting sand, interrupting their serenity to gather samples of it in small glass bottles, the showpiece to their collections. It is no wonder that Barbuda has become the destination of choice for many arenophiles (lovers of sand). The making of a truly beautiful and natural beach is beyond the ingenuity of man. In contrast, creative and maintenance forces have for long centuries smiled on Barbuda and kept her pink, sandy beaches places of refreshment and leisure. If you ever have the blissful experience of visiting Barbuda- The Paradise of Pink Sand -be assured that the memory will linger for a lifetime.

Barbuda Warbler
Barbuda Warbler known in Barbuda as the Christmas Bird. The Barbuda Warbler was once listed as Adelaide's warbler. In 2000 the American Ornithologist’s Union (AOU) on the basis of current information, divided the species into three, under the names: Adelaide’s Warbler, Dendroica adelaidae (endemic to Puerto Rico and Vieques), Barbuda Warbler, Dendroica subita (endemic to Barbuda), and St Lucia Warbler, Dendroica delicata (endemic to St. Lucia). An endemic species is one which is unique to a particular geographic location. Islands are more likely to harbour endemics due to their isolation, given the

Bird
Watching Bird watching is a popular activity that attracts thousands of visitors to Barbuda. Most visitors usually have the opportunity to experience these birds in an unique, natural environment endemic to the island.
The Barbuda Warbler is found mainly in those areas of Barbuda that fall in the vicinity of the wetlands associated with the Lagoon. Here, the thick shrubs provide the ideal conditions for its secretive nesting habits. This vegetation type (particularly the logwood – Haematoxylon campechianum) also supports an abundance of insects, which make up its food source.
a viable economy going into the future. The island is flat (highest point is just over 120 ft/35 m) and ecologically it is very fragile. This is, however, its greatest asset. The small population of just 1,200 people means that Barbuda supports extensive wilderness areas. This balance serves to create a unique blend of 'island' ambiance that forms the basis for this one-of-a-kind ecotourism experience. Visit the island, and rest assured that you will not see anything like it again! Information is provided by The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG), which is Antigua & Barbuda’s only environmental non-governmental

Bird Watching
Magnificent Frigate Bird A short boat ride north of Codrington Village across the lagoon takes you to the Frigate Bird sanctuary, which provides habitat for many species of birds, including brown boobies, black-necked stilts, yellow warblers, moorhens, and, most notably breeding Magnificent Frigate birds. With their long wings, graceful flight, and remarkable mating display, Magnificent Frigate birds are striking seabirds. With more than 1700 nests counted in 2008, the Codrington Lagoon harbours one of the largest frigate bird breeding colonies in the Caribbean. Therefore, the site has recently been designated as an important bird area, a ramsar site and a national park. The Magnificent Frigate birds exhibit several unusual characteristics. Unlike most seabirds, the males and females look different—females are dark brown with white fronts, and are larger than the males, who are heavily ornamented with shiny black feathers and a red throat pouch that they inflate during courtship. Like most seabirds, both parents help to raise their chick. Males collect the nest material and females build the nest. Both parents take turns going on multi-day foraging trips for flying fish and squid. However, in an unusual twist, the males abandon their chick by the time it is 160 days old, leaving the female to continue to care for a juvenile that is dependent on her for over a year. With their light bodies and long wingspans, frigate birds are able to cover vast distances of ocean spaces when not at the colony.

If you look carefully on your visit to the sanctuary, you may see birds with yellow wing tags, with a number-letter combination that can be read with binoculars. To answer some of the questions about frigate bird ecology that we still don’t understand, researchers from Canada (PhD student Sarah Trefry and Professor Tony Diamond) are studying the frigate birds on Barbuda, in cooperation with the Barbuda Council, the Environment Division, National Parks and the Environmental Awareness Group. These researchers are wing tagging individual birds and following breeding success. Any re-sightings of wing tags or questions about the study can be directed to Sarah: s.trefry@unb.ca. Barbuda’s Codrington Lagoon is a fantastic location to observe and photograph frigate birds, but please be respectful - don’t pressure your guide to go closer than the boundary markers. One of the main causes of nest failure in frigate birds is males stealing nesting material; if you go too close to a nest and an adult leaves, its nest could be destroyed. Enjoy your visit to the sanctuary, and help us to keep it a safe place for frigate birds to breed! For tours to the birds sanctuary contact Barbuda Tourism Department, 1 268 562 7065/66

It is highly unlikely that you can have a day at the beach without the steady trade winds blowing across the island. An activity akin to windsurfing, kite surfing involves the use of a kite steered by two tethers while attempting to surf the waves – almost a marriage between surfing and para-sailing. Kayaking is best done within the confines of the Codrington Lagoon or on the sheltered western side of the island, though those more adept and experienced in the activity may be better able to manage the surf within landward side of the eastern reefs. Imagine a breathtaking Caribbean sunset while paddling along the deserted coastline - a truly treat.
Beach Picnic
Take a trip to one of Barbuda’s deserted, secluded beaches and enjoy a day picnic (see page 40). Horse Back Riding
With most of the island being a virtually deserted, a horseback ride along the stunning coast might just be the perfect ending to a day on Barbuda. Picture riding along in a grassy clearing and seeing a deer stag emerging from the thick bush...the only place in the Caribbean where this is possible.
Nature Tours/ Hiking
Barbuda’s landscape offers good terrain for the novice or more experienced hiker. A hike to Darby Cave from Highland House Ruin will take approximately 45 minutes. Trails usually have canopy cover and are quite pleasant to walk. It is not uncommon to see tracks from wild boar, deer and donkeys but sighting of animals are rare. Ask the locals for trail direction or a guide, they are always too willing to help.

Horse Racing
Barbuda is populated by only about fifteen hundred persons, living almost exclusively in Codrington village, so it is rather easy to find a quiet, private location to camp out with friends or family. We suggest camping near to one of our lovely beaches. Be sure to inform the relevant personnel at the place where you are staying on island.
This is a Bi-monthly sporting event where you will find some of the fastest horses on track at Connation Park in Codringtion. The islanders go out to supporting their favourite horse and place bets. So come and join the action. Admission is only EC$5. Beautiful Barbuda | 3rd Edition 2011 50

Simply Beautiful Barbuda Island Tours
Exotic | Unspoilt | Tranquil
At 10ft above sea level, Barbuda is mostly flat, with the exception of the highlands in the north where the island rises to its highest point at 125ft. A short 15 minute flight will get you to Barbuda, located 28 miles north of Antigua. The island is 14 miles long and 8 miles wide with an area of 62 square miles. There are spectacular beaches and reefs with crystal clear water. On Low Bay, there is a small restaurant with shaded tables on the beach for serving lunch and drinks. North beach is a private island on the North Coast of Barbuda, close to the frigate bird sanctuary.

Barbuda
The Perfect Deserted Paradise for Yachting Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda is the yachtsman’s perfect getaway destination. It is, in effect, one big beach. The island was formed from a coral reef which has uplifted from the ocean floor, but not by very much. About a half day’s sail from Antigua at 30 miles, the island is not visible until quite close by and care has to be taken on approach due to the many outcrops of coral reef below the surface of the water but, once there, nothing could be more peaceful. On a first visit, it is best to head up the west coast to the capital, Codrington which is situated on the inside of an almost landlocked lagoon. Anchor off and take a dinghy ashore. A lightweight dinghy can be dragged across the sand spit which encompasses the west side of the lagoon; alternatively, water taxis are available within the lagoon. Apart from Codrington, there are several other anchorages with their own deserted beaches. Ideally a yacht should arrive at and manoeuvre around Barbuda when the sun is overhead so that the reefs are easily visible below the surface of the water. These reefs form one of the attractions of Barbuda as the snorkelling amongst them reveals an abundance of sea life. Other anchorages to consider are Palmetto Point where it is unlikely that you will see another soul. Coco Point needs to be approached with caution through the
reef and Palister Reef offers many anchorages within the reef itself. Gravenor Bay and Spanish Point are other anchorages worth a visit but, apart from Codrington, all anchorages should be approached using an up to date chart or one of the sailing guides which has a section on Barbuda. If you have not already cleared Customs and Immigration in Antigua you will be obliged to do so in Barbuda. They can be contacted on VHF CH16 or +1268 460 0085 and +1268 460 0354. However, if you have cleared in Antigua there is no requirement to do it again in Barbuda. With a small population, there are not many facilities but basic provisions can always be obtained. There are several bars and restaurants frequented by the locals. However, if you are looking for something special check out the Lighthouse Bay Resort at Low Bay which welcomes visiting yachts to its fine cuisine restaurant where freshly caught fish and lobster are a speciality. Of the local bars and restaurants, It’s A Bit Fishy is probably the best and is a short stroll south from the centre of Codrington. There are a few places to visit in the interior such as the limestone caves and the Frigate Bird Sanctuary but, in reality, Barbuda is an island to visit and chill out on its many miles of deserted beaches or snorkelling amongst it reefs. www.beautifulbarbuda.com

MOSQUITOES & SAND FLIES
For further information, please contact the nearest tourist office or:
Though they can be bothersome, mosquitoes in Antigua and Barbuda have little chance of infecting their victims, though the rare dengue fever infection has been reported a few times in Antigua. The biggest concern may be the swelling and itching that would result from being bitten, as is the case with the sand fly, which becomes more of an irritation after a dip in the ocean.
