With the songs from each conten der upping the ante this year, the soca show was riveting from start to end, with new comers Ricardo Dru, Lyrics Man and Laurena Davis definitely proving their worth on the stage. The night air comes alive throughout the island with the silvery notes of pan leaving the pan yards as veterans continue to share their wisdom and passion for the steelpan with young people who have now dominated the pan yards. Oh what sweet beauty it is to not only hear the romantic and pulsing rhythms of the steel pan on the night of Panorama, but to see the numbers of young people drumming that sweet rhythm out of the drums. And just as the numbers continue to grow with the community bands, so too do the support and appreciation of the audience who turned out in full numbers supporting the friendly rivalry between bands. LIME Hell’s Gate was finally overthrown this year, with AMP Halcyon returning to the number one position with bragging rights for a year. But second place Hell’s Gate and third place WIOC Gemonites won’t have them celebrating for too long without an intense battle on steel next year.

But who can forget the pageantry? From queens to shining teens, the pageantry reflects the talent and beauty of the people in Antigua. This year, the Teen Splash dominated the pageantry scene with a night of amazing talent from 13 vibrant teens who proudly wore their school colours and took the audience on a journey of culture, rhythm and pure entertainment. Tired yet? You better not be since we have to venture to Lions for Wootoop or the Coast Parking Lot for the Bullbud. Celebrating 25 years of music those Potters brothers continue to command hordes of people through their music, even making their sibling rivalry a musical addiction that filled the airwaves. But it was big brother Onyan with Bullbud who eventually coined the Road March Title.

And so it is that talent of inspiration and design take to the streets as mas players revel in the soca sweetness of the Antiguan artis tes and smiles spread thickly across the stree ts as they pass eager onlookers. It’s the freedom to jump, dance and celebrate that brings both children and adults out in their numbers year after year to enjoy a festival of colours and cultu re. It’s about colour, it’s about mas, it’s about music, it’s about culture and talent. It’s all about the greatest summer festival in the Caribbean – Antigua’s Carnival!

“She was very big on protocol; you had to do it the right way” Erna Mae Tonge-Hurst on Judie Labadie

No doubt Keva Margetson, Leroy ‘Jughead’ Gordon, and Judie Labadie continue to shake their waists, beat pan, and don costumes in the great beyond. After all, the thing these recently departed cultural icons had in common was how passionate they were about Carnival. Judie Labadie had her Carnival routine. J’ouvert on Monday, Mas on Tuesday; always with a steel band in the first instance, always with Dynamics in the latter. Sometime in between she’d collect extras, adding them to her costume. “By the time she arrived Tuesday afternoon, you couldn’t recognize the costume; she always added embellishments to it,” reflected long time Dynamics co-ordinator, Erna-Mae Tonge-Hurst. But then, that was Judie’s prerogative as a Dynamics foundation member, dating all the way back to the pre-1975 Paragon days. In fact, Judie’s involvement in Carnival, Tonge-Hurst said, goes back even further than that. “According to mommy [Gwendolyn Tonge], she was always involved in Carnival, from the onset,” she related. She played many roles, notably taking on responsibility for majorettes for many years. She kept her hand in, up to the end. “Year before last Carnival, she called me to let me know her observation as the bands crossed the stage,” Tonge-Hurst said. “She was a traditionalist when it came to Carnival. She wanted to ensure that we maintained a balance between what is traditional and what is new.” That was the essence of what Labadie gave in various areas of life; “support, encouragement, guidance, ideas.” Her Carnival and community service pursuits overlapped in 2004 when she was presented with a Humanitarian Award during the annual staging of the Jaycees Caribbean Queen Show by the organization which remembers her still as the “matriarch of the JCI movement”. Each year, the Carnival Grand Marshall leads the parade as a new season begins. That person is usually Carnival royalty; fitting then that Judie was tapped to sit on the ‘throne’ in 2002. Somewhere, she still surveys the Carnival bacchanal with a fond and critical eye.

Gone Too Soon But Not Forgotten

“All Yuh Too Soup” A well-known Keva-ism Keva Margetson was the spirit of Carnival in one spry, diminutive body. Picture her, a joyful vision in white-nfuchsia, and her crew of Just Between Friends, the life of the party at Carnival 50. This informal troupe was Keva’s last lap before illness took hold. By year two, their numbers had swelled and Keva’s twin, Leslie, donned her costume in her stead. Thanks to Vitus, the Catholic troupe she helped build, she was gone but not forgotten again in 2009, with an entire section inspired by her – featuring the madras of the National Dress she helped popularize. Vitus stalwart, Donna O’Donoghue, recalled how essential Keva was to creating the mas’ brand. Take the high stepping moco jumbies, all but gone from Carnival until Vitus brought them back. “The second year we played, ‘Evolution of Wadadli Mas’, we introduced the moco jumbies for the first time,” O’Donoghue explained, “(Keva) built on that...she actually created the Vitus corps of moco jumbies.” Keva also pulled together the script that would make Vitus more than a seasonal troupe – borrowing heavily from her father, Bobby Margetson’s research. The Vitus Cultural Performers have taken their ole time mas depictions to island hotels, cross country, and across the water to other islands. Keva was tireless in her service to Vitus. She spent many a night putting her hand to getting the ‘merry but moral’ troupe ready for the road; daughter Patrice, now a popular singer, sleeping on a cot as night turned to morning, according to O’Donoghue. “I still hear her calling my name,” O’Donoghue remarked. “I still hear her say ‘you know!!’ or ‘hey, it’s not our fault we enjoying ourselves.’ I still hear her riotous laughter.” Keva was soup for culture and Carnival, from her days playing pan with the all-girl Symphonettes steel orchestra to her involvement – through Vitus – in the revival of Antigua’s indigenous pan and iron band. Her brother, Robin, recalled, as well, her active support of the annual Moods of Pan festival. The Professional Organization for Women in Antigua and Barbuda, of which Keva was a founding member, has fittingly set up a scholarship in her honour, awarded to someone majoring in one of her areas of interest, including, what else, culture. Somewhere, Keva is smiling.

“His good beginnings have made really good endings” Antigua Dance Academy founder Veronica Yearwood

Leroy ‘Jughead’ Gordon was all about passing the sticks; passing on his skills to the next generation of pannists. That’s why his work with the School of Pan remains his most enduring contribution to the Harmonites International Steel Orchestra. “Eighty percent of the band’s membership is people that Jughead trained,” said executive member Jerry Edmund. Band captain, Simon Toulon agreed: “He has a knack with young people and he was always thinking about the future of the band.” In fact, one gets a sense that to Jughead, Harmonites and pan was a legacy. “He felt very proud the first time he and his daughter [Simone] played together in Panorama,” Edmund related. But Jughead’s involvement in Carnival wasn’t strictly a pan t’ing; after all, this man was the mas Wizard, leader and designer of Goblins mas troupe and co-founder of Invaders Mas Troupe. There’s also the fact that Jughead Lighting was the go-to lighting and sound team for events on island, a role his son has since taken on. Toulon recalled that Jughead’s interest in this area grew out of the shows put on by the band at hotels. But these other pursuits aside, he was a pan man at heart: the kind of pan man who meticulously chronicled the history of pan so that Antigua’s contribution would not go unrecognized; the kind of pan man who snuck out of his hospital room as the band readied for panorama to hear them play one more time; the kind of pan man who was always ready with words of encouragement as the band worked through rough musical patches. He’ll perhaps best be remembered for the lighter tone he could inject into any situation. With Jughead around, “there was always a moment to have a laugh,” Toulon said. The annual panorama competition was named in Jughead’s honour in 2009, a fitting tribute, Toulon believed, for the former pan association president. Also in tribute, the band he loved had high hopes of hoisting the winning trophy. No doubt, Jughead was nearby whispering encouragement. R.I.P., Keva, Jughead, and Judie; you added colour, music, and splendour to Antigua’s Carnival.

It’s their time to shine. Bright smiles, lots of energy and streets filled with excited children make Children’s Carnival a must-see event, especially for the children. It’s their day to dominate the streets of St. John’s and Carnival City as they dance and frolic, showing off their costumes and latest moves. Jamming to hot releases for the season, we’re reminded of their innocence and the need to have fun for nothing else but that purpose – to have fun. It’s a day for the family, to either watch your children participate in the festivities or take them along to watch the parade and show on stage.

16

We watch as they enjoy themselves, make friendships, and proudly show off their beaded hairstyles, spray-painted hair, and freshly cut Mohawks. It’s about keeping tradition and culture alive, when the children adorn their bright colours and dance in the street to celebrate emancipation from slavery. It’s passing on a love for culture when the junior calypsonians take to the stage to share their words of youthful wisdom, their social commentary in hopes of capturing the titles and leaving a little piece of themselves with all who come out to witness the competition.

But most importantly, it’s about creating memories with our most valuable resources, our future. It’s about letting our children know that we support them, believe in them and trust them to carry on our tradition of Carnival in a safe and fun way. It’s also a reminder to us, as adults to continue to make this tradition one that they’ll be proud to carry on.

So here’s to a day where we remember and celebrate our children!
