PROGRAM NOTES Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Terry Schlenker (b. 1957) studied music composition at the University of North Dakota and at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, from where he holds a Master of Arts in composition. A composer of many orchestral, piano, and chamber works, Schlenker has focused much of his recent energy on a cappella choral music. Many of his pieces are regularly heard on the National Public Radio Network, and he has been featured on the programs of Colorado Matters, Colorado Spotlight, Sacred Classics, and Classical Discoveries. An embryologist by profession, Schlenker co-founded, and for 12 years directed, one of the most successful human in-vitro fertilization laboratories in the world. Several years ago he partially retired in order to focus more time on composing music. He continues to work part- time as an embryologist and consultant in embryology, and frequently speaks internationally on the topic.

Oliver Tarney (b.1984) was educated in Lancaster, UK, moving on to read music at Manchester University. After completing a master's degree in composition, and training as a teacher, he is now Head of Composition and Singing at Winchester College in Hampshire. He sings regularly with the college's chapel choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer. The evocative text of The Waiting Sky by Lucia Quinault depicts a rural winter scene and is skillfully set to create a lucidly reflective piece.

include for the BBC Singers, Westminster Cathedral Choir, London Mozart Players, and a joint commission from the City of London Sinfonia and the Scott Polar Research Institute. Three Latin Motets were recorded by the renowned American choir Phoenix Chorale; this Chandos recording, Spotless Rose, won a Grammy award and was nominated for Best Classical Album. Reviewed as “gorgeous” (Washington Post) and “stunning” (Lawrence Journal-World), the music of Timothy C. Takach (b. 1978) has risen fast in the concert world. Applauded for his melodic lines and rich, intriguing harmonies, Takach has received commissions from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, St. Olaf Band, Cantus, Pavia Winds, Lorelei Ensemble, VocalEssence, the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, The Rose Ensemble, and numerous other organizations. His compositions have been performed on A Prairie Home Companion, The Boston Pops holiday tour, multiple All-State and festival programs and at venues such as the Library of Congress, Kennedy Center, and Royal Opera House Muscat. He is a co-creator of the theatrical production of All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914, by Peter Rothstein. He studied music composition at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN, where he graduated with honors. He has frequent work as a composer-in-residence, presenter, conductor, clinician, and lecturer. He is a full-time composer, and lives in Minneapolis with his wife and two sons. Primarily known for his vastly influential orchestral compositions—most notably The Planets—Gustav Holst (1874-1934) also composed a wide variety of moving choral works. At the tender age of 12, he won a prize in an amateur competition with his vocal work A Christmas Carol. His most popular choral composition, Hymn of Jesus, dates from 1914 and helped to establish his international reputation. Completed in 1900 at the age of 26, and shortly after he abruptly left the Royal College of Music, Ave Maria for eight-part female chorus is dedicated to the memory of his mother, Clara Lediard Holst, who died when he was a child.

Philip Stopford (b.1977) began his musical career as a chorister (aged 8) at Westminster Abbey, London, singing under the direction of Simon Preston and Martin Neary. After being awarded a major music scholarship to Bedford School, he was appointed Organ Scholar at Truro Cathedral, Cornwall before reading music at Keble College, Oxford, where he was also Organ Scholar. Stopford then moved to be Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, before moving to Chester Cathedral to be Assistant Organist. In 2003, Stopford was appointed Director of Music at Belfast Cathedral, Northern Ireland, becoming the youngest Cathedral Organist in the country at that time, aged just 25. With this extensive background in choral music, Stopford has becoming a respected choir trainer and composer of church music, selling half a million copies of music. As of 2016, Stopford works at Christ Church Bronxville in New York. Composer Abbie Burt Betinis (b. 1980) has loved experimenting with sound since age 3, when her parents – singing in the car – heard an excited squeal from the backseat: “I holded my own hawmony!” Betinis is the great granddaughter of Bates and grand-niece of Alfred Burt. Bates G. Burt (18781948) began a tradition in 1922 creating a musical Christmas card, which he sent to family members and parishioners of the church where he served as rector in Pontiac, Michigan. After Alfred graduated college, receiving a Bachelor of Music in Theory, his father asked him to take over as composer and write the music for the family Christmas card beginning in 1942 and composed the music for fifteen Christmas carols between 1942 and 1954. Continuing the family tradition with freshness and craftsmanship, Minnesota Public Radio has recorded and produced Betinis’ annual Christmas carols since 2001. Ēriks Ešenvalds (b. 1977) is one of the most sought-after composers working today, with a busy commission schedule and performances of his music heard on every continent. Born in Priekule, Latvia in 1977, he studied at the Latvian Baptist Theological Seminary (1995–97) before obtaining his Master’s degree in composition (2004) from the 4

Latvian Academy of Music. Ešenvalds’ compositions appear on many recordings released by labels such as Hyperion, Decca Classics, Deutsche Grammophon, Delphian Records, Pentatone, Ondine, and Naxos. Born in St Asaph, North Wales in 1975, Paul Mealor studied composition privately as a boy with William Mathias and John Pickard, and at the University of York with Nicola LeFanu and in Copenhagen with Hans Abrahamsen and Per Nørgård. His music has been commissioned and performed at many festivals and by many orchestras and choruses, and has been broadcast on every major TV and radio station throughout the world. Since January 2003, he has taught in the Music Department at the University of Aberdeen where he is professor of composition.

in Honolulu, Hawaii, where her husband is stationed with the Canadian National Guard. Following in the steps of William Dawson, Jester Hairston, and Moses Hogan, the arrangements of Stacey V. Gibbs (b. 1962) bring new life to the spiritual repertoire. His rhythmic voice is particularly fascinating, providing an authentic sense of energy and motion to each arrangement.

Highly acclaimed for his expertise in bringing new vitality and excitement to these beloved pieces, Gibbs’ work has reached a wide range of choirs both internationally and in the U.S., where they have been featured in numerous festivals, celebrations, and competitions as well as at ACDA regional and national conferences. Gibbs resides in Detroit, Michigan.

PLEASE CONSIDER TURNING IN YOUR PROGRAM AT THE END OF THE CONCERT TO BE RE-USED AND RECYCLED.

Mealor was catapulted to international stardom in April 2011, when 2.5 billion people (the largest audience in broadcasting history) heard his Motet, Ubi caritas performed by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, conducted by James O’Donnell, at the Royal Wedding Ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton (now TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge). It since topped the Classical singles charts in the USA, UK, Australia, France, and New Zealand. Sarah Quartel (b. 1982) is a Canadian composer and educator known for her fresh and exciting approach to choral music. She celebrates the musical potential of all learners by providing singers access to high quality repertoire and engaging music education. Quartel’s choral works are performed by children, youth, and adults throughout the world and her work as an educator connects exciting musical experiences with meaningful classroom learning. Quartel regularly partners with ensembles worldwide on commissioning projects. In 2015, her work Wide Open Spaces was commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association and received its premiere performance under the baton of Bob Chilcott. In 2017, her work Snow Angel was performed at Lincoln Center in New York City by the National Children’s Chorus of the United States. Her compositions have been featured in numerous concerts, commercial recordings, and radio broadcasts. She currently lives 5

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Artistic Director Joel M. Rinsema joined Kantorei in 2014, becoming the second conductor in its history. During his tenure, Kantorei has already experienced tremendous growth of its audiences, nearly tripled its budget size, and launched an ambitious recording strategy beginning with its first professionally recorded and produced recording project on the Naxos label in early 2018. A frequent collaborator and champion of new works for chorus, Joel has commissioned and premiered work of many of today’s leading composers including Kim André Arnesen, Mason Bates, René Clausen, Ola Gjeilo, Mark Hayes, Cecilia McDowall, David Montoya, Timothy Tharaldson, and Eric Whitacre. He is an accomplished conductor of major works for choir and orchestra and was one of eighteen conductors chosen nationally through audition to participate in master classes and workshops presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and Chorus America. As a tenor soloist, Joel performed across the United States and in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Joel is a passionate advocate for the professional choral art form, and he frequently consults with other choral arts organizations locally and around the country. Because of his leadership in his field, he

received the Louis Botto Award for “Innovative Action and Entrepreneurial Zeal” from Chorus America, the industry’s advocacy, research, and leadership development organization for choral ensembles. He came to Kantorei from the Grammy Award-winning Phoenix Chorale. Throughout his 23-year tenure with the Phoenix Chorale, he served in nearly every capacity with the organization including the last 15 years as President & CEO and Assistant Conductor. He negotiated an ongoing recording contract with the prestigious U.K.-based Chandos Records, and Phoenix Chorale recordings earned a total of eight Grammy nominations and two Grammy wins. Joel appears on all of the Phoenix Chorale recordings and was a soloist on the Grammy Award-winning “Spotless Rose: Hymn to the Virgin Mary.” In addition to his work with the Phoenix Chorale, Joel served as the Director of Music at Church of the Beatitudes United Church of Christ in Phoenix for 15 years, and was the founding chorus master of the Arizona Musicfest Chorus. He holds music degrees from Arizona State and Whitworth Universities. In March 2017, Joel began his tenure as the North American Choral Promotion Manager for Oxford University Press based in Oxford, England.

Steve Grupe comes to Kantorei with nearly 25 years’ experience in performing arts administration, having previously worked with Opera Omaha, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and St. Martin’s Chamber Choir. A native Nebraskan and a graduate of Concordia University, Nebraska, Steve also did graduate work in choral conducting at the University

of Colorado in Boulder. He began his career in the arts as a high school music educator in suburban Cleveland, where he sang with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for two seasons, joining them on a tour to Carnegie Hall. In his spare time, Steve’s interests include travel, opera, and the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. 7

THE CHOIR

Kantorei frequently performs at major choral conventions across the U.S., has toured around the world, and works with composers and conductors of international renown. Kantorei has sung under the batons of René Clausen, Simon Carrington, Eric Whitacre, Karen Kennedy, and Anton Armstrong. Kantorei has commissioned and premiered new choral works from renowned composers including Kim André Arnesen, Eric William Barnum, Abbie Betinis, René Clausen, Ola Gjeilo, Joshua Shank, and Eric Whitacre.

8

Naxos released Kantorei’s recording—its first to be professionally produced—of works by Kim André Arnesen in 2018. Santa Barbara Music Publishing Inc., publishes the Kantorei Choral series. Formed in 1997 under the leadership of six friends and artistic director Richard Larson who decided to form a choir capable of singing a broad range of a cappella choral music, Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 National American Choral Directors Association Conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

TEXT & TRANSLATIONS Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence From the Liturgy of St. James, 5th Century Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in His hand Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture in the body and the blood. He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the pow'rs of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At His feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, “Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord most high!” The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came Basque carol, trans. Sabine baring-Gould The angel Gabriel from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame: “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favoured lady, Gloria.” “For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be, All generations laud and honour thee, Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold. Most highly favoured lady, Gloria.” Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “My soul shall laud and magnify His holy name.” “Most highly favoured lady, Gloria.” Of her, Emmanuel the Christ was born In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say“Most highly favoured lady, Gloria.” The Waiting Sky Lucia Quinault The trees are bare, Green fields where puddles hold the waiting sky. The cows move slowly, Their breathing clouds the air as they walk by. What if the clouds smother the shining star? We’ll know it’s there. Warm light will fill the puddles, 10

And the cows will stop and stare. The trees are bare, Green fields where puddles hold the waiting sky. Now may we singen 15th-cent. English This Babe to us that now is born, Wonderful works He hath ywrought, He would not loss what was forlorn, But boldly again it brought; And thus it is Forsooth ywis, He asketh nought but that is His. Now may we singen, now may we singen as it is. Quod per natus est, natus est nobis. [Because a boy is born to us.] This bargain loved He right well, The price was high and bought full dear. Who would suffer and for us feel As did that Prince withouten peer? His ransom for us hathy paid; Good reason have we to be His. Be mercy asked and He be prayed, Who may deserve the heavenly bliss. Joseph Michael Dennis Browne A starry sky is in my arms I hear my breathing – now not only mine each dawn is different now that you are here sometimes I stare at you, sometimes I tremble I stand above you, my head a moon and you down there on the sweet straw each dawn is different now that you are here I hear my breathing, now not only mine all my dreams for you, wondering who you might be, how far you may have come to be with us each dawn is different now that you are here sometimes I feel among waves too steep, my boat too small for these wide hands to have made when I’ve been working, when the sun is low, I sink into the stream and lie there, pale as stone and still this burning that I feel so deep inside me how are you mine, child? how are you ever mine? I am like a father I am like a father so let the old Joseph die, the new be born hold high this lantern for the world to see – this child, this light, this saving one a starry sky within my arms (O heart) each dawn is different now that you are here

Ave Maria Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus Et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus Sancta Maria, Ora pronobis Amen Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee Blessed art thou among women And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus Holy Mary, pray for us Amen A Child Is Born in Bethlehem 14th Century Latin Hymn A child is born in Bethlehem, alleluia. And joy is in Jerusalem, alleluia. Rejoice, rejoice, sing high, sing low, alleluia. Benedicamus Domino, [let us bless the Lord,] alleluia. To thee O Lord be glory paid, alleluia. Thou Son of Mary, Mother maid, alleluia. To Holy Trinity give praise, alleluia. With Deo gracias [thanks be to God] always, alleluia! Hail, Christmas Day! John H. Burt Hail, Christmas Day, that brings the story Echoed forth from East to West Unto us God comes in glory, Hodie, Iesu Natus Est! [Today, Christ is born!] Over Bethlehem hills a-singing, Down through centuries to our day; Peace, good will, and love he’s bringing, Gloria Tibi, Domine.[Glory be to Thee, O Lord.] What does this birth to us betoken? Can he save from fear and doom? This have saints and prophets spoken, Christus Redemptor Omnium. [Christ the redeemer of all.] So, good people, let’s be giving Praise and offerings profuse Unto Christ, the Lord of Living, Adeste Fidelis, gaudeamus. [Approach, faithful people, rejoice.] Some Children See Him Wilha Hutson, Alfred Burt Some children see Him lily white, The baby Jesus born this night. Some children see Him lily white, With tresses soft and fair. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, The Lord of heav'n to earth come down. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, With dark and heavy hair. Some children see Him almond-eyed, This Savior whom we kneel beside.

Some children see Him almond-eyed, With skin of yellow hue. Some children see Him dark as they, Sweet Mary's Son to whom we pray. Some children see him dark as they, And, ah! they love Him, too! The children in each different place Will see the baby Jesus' face Like theirs, but bright with heavenly grace, And filled with holy light. O lay aside each earthly thing And with thy heart as offering, Come worship now the infant King. 'Tis love that's born tonight! Run, Toboggan, Run Holly Windle Anticipation’s in the air, Run, toboggan, run! The snow is fresh and waiting there; The children chatter and prepare. Run, toboggan, run! Assemble sweaters, coats and caps, The mittens, gloves and fleeces, The scarves and jackets, hats with flaps – With buttons, zippers, clips and snaps – So many separate pieces! A vee of geese flies overhead As southward their migration, While armed with snowballs, skates and sled, The families frolic, noses red, With noisy jubilation. Oh, sledding teaches useful skills, Philosophy and science: Respect the steepness of the hills, And try again, despite the spills, To steer with self-reliance. The safest and most pleasant way Is taking turns and sharing; Help rescue any runaway, And know the risks when you display Outrageous feats of daring. Find happiness to hold and keep. The joys of just an hour Become a comfort, strong and deep, To help you when the hills are steep With mem’ries’ golden power. December days are cold and dark, Run, toboggan, run! In each of us there glows a spark Where joy and hope have left their mark. Soon Christmas Day will come. Run, toboggan, run!

O Emmanuel Gregorian chant O Emmanuel, Rex et legifer noster, Exspectatio Gentium, et Salvator earum: Veni ad salvandum nos, Domine, Deus noster. Emmanuel, King and our law-giver, Hope and Savior of the nations: Come to save us, Lord, our God. In the Bleak Midwinter Christina Rossetti In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter Long ago. Angels and archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air – But only His mother In her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can, I give Him – Give my heart. Silent Night Josef Mohr, trans. John F. Young Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child, Holy infant so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia! Christ the Saviour is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light; Radiance beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Go Tell It on the Mountain Traditional Spiritual Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev’rywhere. Go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. When I was a seeker, I sought both night and day. I asked the Lord to help me, And He showed the way. They found a lowly manger, Where humble Christ was born, And God sent our salvation That blessed Christmas morn. Rise Up Shepherd Traditional Spiritual Rise up shepherd and follow, follow, follow. Behold the star up yonder, behold the star. There’s a star in the east on Christmas morn, Rise up shepherd and follow, It will lead to the place where the Christ was born, Hallelujah, rise up shepherd and follow. Follow, follow, rise up shepherd and follow, Follow the star of Bethlehem, Rise up shepherd and follow. Shepherd leave-a your sheep and leave your lambs, Rise up shepherd and follow, Shepherd leave-a your sheep and leave your rams, Hallelujah, rise up shepherd and follow. If you take good heed to the angel’s word, Rise up shepherd and follow. You’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds. Hallelujah, rise up shepherd and follow.
