Challenges L’Etoile managed by Alkor is the largest perfumery and beauty products chain in Russia with more than 640 retail stores throughout the country, of which 160 are in Moscow. The Russian beauty products industry has been experiencing steady growth and is one of the fastest growing sectors in the past decade.
With such a geographically dispersed business serving 9 million registered customers with point of sales checkouts issuing 2 million receipts a month, L’Etoile needed a more effective business intelligence (BI) system. Employees were using more than 20 online analytical processing (OLAP) cubes and over 20 flat operational reports based on Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services software. The reports covered all types of analytics including sales reports, reports on residual stocks, items out of stock, purchases, and other key indicators. The data volume for the OLAP cubes and flat reports is 2 terabytes.
Most of the OLAP cubes are updated every working day and incrementally. However, these instruments not always allowed to easily create new extensions necessary for the end users, and did not give enough graphical view of the information analysed.
User friendly solution consolidates data in a single system L’Etoile had several key requirements for its new BI software: easy to use for all staff with data consolidated in a highly scalable single system. The retail chain wanted the capacity for self-service analysis of any product category through different hierarchies, such as region, city, or shop, quickly and irrespective of the data volume consumed. Nikolay Zaitsev, Technology Vice President, Alkor, says:“We were looking for a business intelligence system that allows business users to explore from a new angle all key performance indicators.”
Ease of customization and integration influences the choice of QlikView After a thorough study of BI solutions on the market, the choice was QlikView. Zaitsev says: “We chose QlikView as it can be easily customised and integrated with other line of business systems. QlikView allows us to analyse data on a timely basis and without making complicated requests.” Specifically, QlikView allows the 35 current users at L’Etoile to consolidate information from disparate data sources such as enterprise resource planning (ERP)

software, OLAP cubes, and customer relationship management technology. User adoption was widespread throughout the retail chain of stores because of its ease of use. Many commented that “the software works the way the mind works.” Since August 2010 when it was deployed, QlikView has successfully extended and enhanced the previous BI tools used by L’Etoile. Employees on the move can also access QlikView through mobile devices including smartphones, iPads, and iPhones, which is a major new benefit for users.
Time for decision making about marketing campaigns has been reduced L’Etoile is now far better equipped to meet competition from other retail chains with the new BI toolset. The current value of the
Russian beauty products market is approximately U.S.$ 7.8 billion with recent annual growth of 14 per cent. Due to QlikView the time for marketing campaigns and sales analysis has been reduced.
In a further phase of development, L’Etoile wants to extend the use of QlikView to top management and line managers in shops as well as creating new statistical reports on sales, merchandise flows, and financial information.
QlikView drills down into over 120 million records The power of QlikView is helping L’Etoile to better understand its business by presenting sales dynamics by product and regional hierarchies. It analyses more than 120 million individual records and achieves a report rebuilding speed of around five seconds. Sales reports are produced in a highly visual way with timelines and use of the Google Maps web mapping service. Managers can monitor customer preferences, control distribution of gifts, and oversee any violations of terms.
We were looking for a business intelligence system that allows business users to explore from a new angle all key performance indicators. Nikolay Zaitsev, Technology Vice President, Alkor
