WELCOME TO TEXAS! Dear Brothers & Guests, Welcome to San Antonio, Texas, for Kappa Alpha Order’s 75th Convention. This is our Diamond Convention and I’m proud to celebrate it in my hometown! San Antonio is a wonderful city filled with culture, history, and energy. From the exciting River Walk to the historic Spanish Missions, you will find it all here. This week will be filled with good fellowship, reacquainting with old friends, meeting new ones, and of course conducting the business of the Order. There are several special events this week that I hope you enjoy. These include the model initiation Thursday afternoon at the Scottish Rite Theater. Directly following initiation, we have a unique opportunity for you, dinner on the grounds of the Alamo! Friday morning we’ll open the first session of the 75th Convention. Afterward, everyone will take buses to SeaWorld San Antonio for a fun-filled day with brothers from across the nation. That night we will host the 16th annual Bid for Brotherhood auction on the River Walk to raise funds and support for the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation. Saturday morning will be filled with more business of the Order. Following those meetings, we’ll have our Leadership Lecture Luncheon. This year, we are fortunate to have The Honorable Robert Pittenger (Omicron - Texas ‘67), U.S. Congressman from North Carolina District 9, as our lecturer. The final Convention session will allow us to complete the work of the Order for this meeting. Finally, we’ll cap off our Convention weekend with a Diamond Celebration including receptions and the Knight Commander’s Banquet. We will also hear about what’s in store for 2015. I am pleased to share this week with you to celebrate our heritage and continue our mission of serving young gentlemen. Brothers, welcome, and thank you for being here.

William E. Dreyer Knight Commander

4th Convention (1873) - 140 years ago, due to the closure of Alpha Chapter, the Convention formally assumes control as the sovereign body of the Order, in Athens, Georgia.

CONVENTION SESSIONS Convention is the soverign legislative body of the Order. Regular meetings of the Convention are held in odd-numbered years. Each time the Convention convenes during a meeting is called a Session. There is an order of business to follow, which may be rearranged upon vote of the Convention. The Knight Commander serves as president of the Convention. The Convention completes much business, including: amendments to the Kappa Alpha Laws, which have been previously filed, are read and referred typically to the Legislative Commitee then deliberated upon for report and action; the Resolutions and Finance Committees meet and give their reports; the Alumni and Undergraduate Conferences convene and report; and the Councilors, Senior Councilor, and Knight Commander are elected. Also, the Knight Commander is required to give his biennial report. While it is a time for business, it is also a time for recognizing award winners and members, speeches, special presentations, and recording into the official Convention record the history of the Order. Just imagine, what is recorded this year in 2013 will be read and researched in 25, 50, 75, and even 100 years from now. Current Kappa Alpha Laws can be found at www.kappaalphaorder.org/laws.

CONVENTION PROCEDURE

The Convention may proceed, out of order, to any order of business by a majority vote. Amended by 56th Convention, 1975 and 64th Convention, 1991.

9th Convention (1878) - Annual Conventions are done away with at this Convention in Macon, Georgia, when the delegates adopt Biennial Conventions in odd-numbered years, the first beginning the following year.

MODEL INITIATION This year, our initiation ceremony will be performed by our brothers from Gamma Xi at Lamar University and Zeta Xi at Texas Wesleyan University. The ceremony will be conducted at the gorgeous Scottish Rite Theater and Grand Ballroom. Built in 1924, the Scottish Rite Theatre & Grand Ballroom is a building with rich historical character. The Grand Foyer boasts Italian marble pillars from floor to ceiling. All hallways, stairways and ceilings are covered in hand-carved, hand-painted designs. A number of new men will be initiated into our eternal bonds of brotherhood. In addition, look to the Model Initiation program, handed out when you enter the Theater, to help remember and memorialize our KAs we have lost over the past two years. As you watch the initiation, recommit yourselves to a lifetime of brotherhood, service, and dedication to the values of Kappa Alpha Order.

EVENING AT THE ALAMO The memories of James Bowie, David Crockett, and William B. Travis are as powerful today as when the Texan Army under Sam Houston shouted “Remember the Alamo!” as it routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The Alamo has been managed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1905. Located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Alamo represents nearly 300 years of history.

LEADERSHIP LECTURE LUNCHEON Saturday, we’ll be treated to the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation’s 14th Leadership Lecture Luncheon. The Leadership Lecture Series began in 1996 in Scottsdale, Arizona with the late Ely Callaway, Jr. (Epsilon – Emory ‘37), founder of Callaway Golf, speaking to all KA undergraduate and alumni brothers in attendance. Since that time, the series has grown to become an integral part of the Convention weekend. Robert Pittenger (Omicron - Texas ‘67) is the United States Congressman representing the citizens of the 9th District of North Carolina. Congressman Pittenger’s district encompasses portions of Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties, and is home to the second largest financial center in the country, located in Charlotte. He serves on the House Committee on Financial Services, and sits on the Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee, as well as the Monetary Policy and Trade Subcommittee. House Speaker John Boehner appointed Congressman Pittenger to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which monitors human rights and the development of the rule of law in China. He is Chairman of the Congressional Taskforce on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, and is also a member of the Taskforce on Terrorism and Proliferation Financing. Born and raised in Texas, Robert was the youngest of four children. His dad was a small businessman, and his mother raised the children. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, Congressman Pittenger began his career in service to his faith. He worked for 10 years as Assistant to the President of Campus Crusade for Christ, and helped to bring the work of the organization to over 170 countries. In 1985, Congressman Pittenger and his family moved to Charlotte, where he built a national real estate investment company from the ground up. He served in the North Carolina Senate from 2003-2008. He has served on numerous governmental and community boards in and around North Carolina.

...the Order simply could not do what we do without the donors to the KAOEF. When you meet a donor to the KAOEF this weekend, thank them! Then ask, “how can I begin to support the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation?”

KNIGHT COMMANDER’S ACCOLADE RECEPTION These are the gentlemen in the handsome crimson and gold ribbon and jewel. They are some of our most dedicated, loyal, and selfless alumni. The recipients of the Knight Commander’s Accolade are selected for leadership and service to the Order. Over 148 years, thirteen Knight Commanders have bestowed this honor on only 199 brothers. Many of these gentlemen are here with us this year. They are invited to gather for the this reception and exchange stories of involvement, service, leadership and brotherhood. Just maybe another recipient will be honored too! If you see these men this week, talk to them. Learn from them and their experiences. They truly have given years of time, talent, and treasure to Kappa Alpha Order.

KNIGHT COMMANDER’S BANQUET At the Knight Commander’s Banquet, we honor our 39th Knight Commander, all Former Knight Commanders, and enjoy a grand program. Sir, you are a Kappa Alpha. You are not just another fraternity man. You are a knight of the most unique organization among Greek letter societies. You have been made familiar with the tradition and values which emanated - not by accident, but by device - from the most noble qualities of the Knights of Old. Into the heritage you have been presented are incorporated the highest ideals of fidelity to God and esteem of women. You are a KA. You can never be anything else and cannot do less than aspire to excellence. You cannot be petty, cowardly, unfair, unfaithful; you are a KA. You have a serious challenge, indeed a direct obligation incumbent upon you as a KA. As you are the recipient of so rich a heritage, you are conscience-bound to be ever anxious to preserve, strengthen, and pass on the heritage to those brothers your Order chooses to entrust with it in the future.

You will never grow taller than when you stoop to help a brother. And you cannot desert him when others do. You can never become wiser by disregarding the sterling ideals of your Order. You can never worship your God more intimately than when you utilize the tools Kappa Alpha has given you. And if you will do these things, you cannot but realize for yourself the respect of your fellow man, the wealth of mortal happiness, and the salvation by a generous God. -Former Councilor Roy Parsons (Alpha Kappa – Missouri ‘46)
