On July 11, 1870, delegates from seven Kappa Alpha Order chapters and Knight Commander Samuel Zenas Ammen sat around a small table in a hotel room in Richmond, Virginia. This session constituted the first KA Convention. 147 years later, the Order holds its 77th regular meeting of Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. WELCOME TO ST. LOUIS! Dear Brothers & Guests, Welcome to St. Louis, Missouri, for Kappa Alpha Order’s 77th Convention & Brotherhood Weekend. I’m proud to celebrate it in a state dear to my heart! St. Louis is a wonderful city filled with culture, history, and energy. From the historic Gateway Arch, to the beautiful Forest Park and Botanical Gardens, to the fantastic Zoo, you will find it all here. This week will be filled with good fellowship, reacquainting with old friends, meeting new ones, and of course conducting the business of the Order. There are several special events this week that I hope you enjoy. All day Thursday we introduce a new concept in the spirit of the St. Louis World’s Fair—The Values Expo. Here you’ll gain some great information about KA values and operations, visit vendors and exhibitors, and enjoy live music, entertainment and fellowship with arriving attendees. Don’t miss the numerous giveaways and raffles for just attending. Thursday afternoon we will open the first session of the 77th Convention. Afterward, everyone will take buses to Anheuser-Busch for tours of the brewery and a fun-filled brotherhood dinner with brothers from across the nation.

Saturday will be filled with more business of the Order. We will discuss important topics in the Undergraduate and Alumni Conferences as well as the committee meetings. The final session will also allow us to complete the work of the Order for this Convention. We will also hear about the status of the Order and what is in store for the next year. Finally, we’ll cap off our Brotherhood Weekend with receptions and the Knight Commander’s Banquet. I am pleased to share this week with you to celebrate our value of brotherhood. Brothers, welcome, and thank you for being here. Fraternally,

Darren S. Kay Knight Commander

On Friday morning, initiated brothers will get the chance to renew their vows at model initiation, which will be held at the beautiful Missouri Athletic Club. Following model initiation, we will have our Leadership Lecture Luncheon hosted by the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation (KAOEF). We are fortunate to have former American football player and head coach Sam Wyche (Iota–Furman ’66), who introduced the no-huddle offense, as our lecturer. That night we will host the 20th annual Bid for Brotherhood at Busch Stadium to raise funds and support for the KAOEF through live and silent auctions. Each undergraduate’s full registration fee allows them to attend Bid for Brotherhood and take part in the action.

SCHEDULE You must have a name tag and meal tickets for each meal. Some events may require additional purchases. Visit the Registration for more information and to purchase additional event tickets.

KAPPA ALPHA LAWS Convention is the sovereign legislative body of the Order. Regular meetings of the Convention are held in odd-numbered years. Each time the Convention convenes during a meeting is called a Session. There is an order of business to follow, which may be rearranged upon vote of the Convention. The Knight Commander serves as president of the Convention. The Convention completes much business, including: amendments to the Kappa Alpha Laws, which have been previously filed, are read and referred typically to the Legislative Committee then deliberated upon for report and action; the Resolutions and Finance Committees meet and give their reports; the Alumni and Undergraduate Conferences convene and report; and the Councilors, Senior Councilor, and Knight Commander are elected. Also, the Knight Commander is required to give his biennial report. While it is a time for business, it is also a time for recognizing award-winners and members, speeches, special presentations, and recording into the official Convention record the history of the Order. Just imagine, what is recorded this year in 2017 will be read and researched in 25, 50, 75, and even 100 years from now! Current Kappa Alpha Laws can be found at www.KappaAlphaOrder.org/laws.

CONVENTION PROCEDURE

The Convention may proceed, out of order, to any order of business by a majority vote. Amended by 56th Convention, 1975 and 64th Convention, 1991.

ANHEUSER-BUSCH Take a tour of Anheuser-Busch’s largest and oldest facility. As you walk through the halls of the historic St. Louis brewery, you are transported in time. You will realize the vision that became one of the largest and oldest breweries in the nation. After your tour, enjoy the Brotherhood Dinner in The Biergarten.

CRIMSON & GOLD SOCIETY DINNER The Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation will host the 4th Annual Crimson & Gold Society Dinner on Thursday at The Racquet Club. Attendees will hear from award-winning author Scott Bowden to discuss Robert E. Lee in a question and answer session setting. In 1927, when Charles Lindbergh needed money to make his historic solo flight across the Atlantic, he went to members of the St. Louis Racquet Club. During dinner at the club, a group of businessmen ponied up $15,000. In return, Lindbergh named his plane the “Spirit of St. Louis.” The Crimson and Gold Society Dinner honors alumni and friends of the Order who contribute $1,000 in unrestricted support to the Foundation each year. Learn more at KAcrimsonandgold.com.

2017 KA CHORUS Led by Councilor Sam O. Leake Jr. (Beta Xi–Oklahoma State ’61), the KA Chorus will perform KA songs at the Knight Commander’s Banquet on Saturday evening. If you are interested, see the schedule for KA Chorus practice times or talk with Councilor Leake for more information.

A MORAL COMPASS FOR THE MODERN GENTLEMAN

KAOEF LEADERSHIP LECTURE LUNCHEON This is the KAOEF’s 15th Leadership Lecture. The Leadership Lecture Series began in 1996 in Scottsdale, Arizona, with the late Ely Callaway, Jr. (Epsilon–Emory ’37), founder of Callaway Golf, speaking to all undergraduate and alumni brothers in attendance. Since that time, the series has grown to become an integral part of the Convention weekend. This year, we are fortunate to have former American player and head coach for the Cincinnati Bengals Sam Wyche (Iota–Furman ’66). Perhaps best known for introducing the use of the no-huddle offense as a standard offense, Wyche’s greatest achievement as a head coach was leading the Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl XXIII.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING Membership in a fraternity comes with many benefits including professional networking, which can be vital in excelling in your career. During the Professional Networking Fair, undergraduates and alumni will get a chance to mingle and connect with brothers in almost every industry. Get advice or learn from the first-hand experiences of other brothers, and make connections that will help advance in your career.

INTERFRATERNAL RECOGNITION LUNCHEON Kappa Alpha Order is proud to honor individuals who have been recognized by the NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference (NIC) for their leadership and service to the fraternal movement and Greek community during the Interfraternal Recognition Luncheon. Gregory R. Singleton (Gamma Gamma–Memphis ’82) will receive the NIC Silver Medal, Wayne E. Dawson (Gamma Epsilon–Arizona ’60) is the recipient of the Advisor Award of Distinction, and Jesse A. Sheldon (Zeta Mu–Univ. of Washington ’14) will receive the Undergraduate Award of Distinction. In addition, we will be joined by interfraternal friends from the area. KA will recognize Mark E. Timmes, CEO, of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, with the Order’s Accolade for Interfraternal Service. This award was created by then Knight Commander Dr. Idris R. Traylor Jr. to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to the Greek or fraternity community.

KNIGHT COMMANDER’S BANQUET

Events on Saturday evening are black tie. See the schedule for tuxedo pick-up times.

WORSHIP SERVICE Join National Chaplain Dwain P. Knight (Delta Kappa–Stephen F. Austin State ’04) for a moving Sunday service surrounding Kappa Alpha Order’s values, our shared brotherhood, and our faith. Reflect on the Order in your life and enjoy the fellowship in the closing hours of this historic weekend.

REVERENCE • GENTILITY • KNOWLEDGE • LEADERSHIP • BROTHERHOOD • EXCELLENCE

As a finale to the 77th Convention & Brotherhood Weekend, celebrate the value of Brotherhood at the Knight Commander’s Banquet on Saturday evening. Prior to the Banquet, there will be two receptions. The first is for recipients of the Knight Commander’s Accolade and members of the KAOEF’s Crimson and Gold Society. The second is for all Convention attendees. It is hosted by the St. Louis Gateway Alumni Chapter in honor of the Loyal Order and Forever KA. Join us and learn more about staying involved as an alumnus and giving back to KA.
