Welcome to the Celebration Dear Brothers & Guests, Welcome to Roanoke, Virginia for Kappa Alpha Order’s Sesquicentennial Celebration and 76th Convention. From the beautiful Hotel Roanoke to the streets of historic Lexington, this weekend you will explore the past, enjoy the present, and shape the future of our Order. There are several special events and wonderful KA alumni speakers this weekend. On Thursday, we’ll have our first Convention session including the Leadership Lecture from world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James R. Andrews. Dr. Andrews will also speak to the Crimson & Gold Society that evening. Concurrently, we’ll host the Opening Celebration featuring our Official Traveling Archives and special guest speaker, Dr. James I. “Bud” Robertson. Dr. Robertson is a leading expert on the Civil War and Robert E. Lee.

Between committee meetings and the final Convention session, we will hear from two sports legends. Superbowl coach and quarterback Sam Wyche and former U.S. Olympic Basketball Team Captain Kenny Davis will each speak and field questions from the audience. Our guest moderator, sportscaster Dave Baker, will host the event. Congressman Richard Hudson will speak to Convention that afternoon before we adjourn. Saturday night is the Sesquicentennial Ball. After our entertainment, a new Knight Commander will be installed and the Sesquicentennial Toast will be delivered by Former Knight Commander Dr. Idris R. Traylor, Jr. My two terms as Knight Commander have been a highlight of my life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served. Personally, this Sesquicentennial year has been eventful, rewarding, and of course memorable. Linda and I have traveled thousands of miles, met thousands of wonderful Kappa Alpha brothers, and celebrated dozens of milestones, occasions, and awards. We look forward to meeting all of you this weekend, too. God bless the Kappa Alpha Order and God bless each one of you! Fraternally,

William E. Dreyer Knight Commander

Friday morning we will travel to the birthplace of our Order—Lexington, Virginia. A model initiation ceremony is first on the itinerary. Afterward, at Virginia Military Institute, we will hold a ceremonial Convention session. Following Convention are tours of historic locations throughout the city. That afternoon we will dedicate our Veterans Memorial at the National Administrative Office at Mulberry Hill. Congressman Robert Pittenger will speak at our BBQ dinner on the grounds of Mulberry Hill. Finally, you may either attend the downtown Friday’s Alive Concert or the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation’s exciting fundraiser, the 18th Annual Bid for Brotherhood.

76th Convention Convention Sessions

The sovereignty and legislative authority of Kappa Alpha Order shall be and is vested in the Convention. Regular meetings of the Convention are held in odd-numbered years. Each time the Convention convenes during a meeting is called a Session. There is an order of business to follow, which may be rearranged upon vote of the Convention. The Knight Commander serves as president of the Convention. The Convention completes much business, including: amendments to the Kappa Alpha Laws, which have been previously filed, are read and referred typically to the Legislative Committee then deliberated upon for report and action; the Resolutions and Finance Committees meet and give their reports; the Alumni and Undergraduate Conferences convene and report; and the Councilors, Senior Councilor, and Knight Commander are elected. Also, the Knight Commander is required to give his biennial report. While it is a time for business, it is also a time for recognizing award winners and members, speeches, special presentations, and recording into the official Convention record the history of the Order. Just imagine, what is recorded this year in 2015 will be read and researched in 25, 50, 75, and even 100 years from now. Current Kappa Alpha Laws can be found at www.KappaAlphaOrder.org/laws.

The Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation’s Bid for Brotherhood (B4B) began in 1998 in Kansas City, Missouri. Conceived and first hosted by then Knight Commander James R. Estes, B4B brings alumni together for a meaningful fundraising event to support KA’s valuable leadership education programs.. By providing a grant to the Order annually, the KAOEF assists in offsetting the cost to provide outstanding educational opportunities for KA’s undergraduate members. The KAOEF’s long-term goal is to offer all the Order’s programs at zero cost to our undergraduate members. As of last year, net income raised through B4B events totaled $694,000. Each auction event continues to grow and it is our hope that this 18th annual B4B, held on post at VMI, will be our best yet.

Loyal Order and Forever KA Reception Saturday, August 1, Hotel Roanoke, Shenandoah The Loyal Order is an elite group of alumni who have re-dedicated themselves to their fraternal experience. The cost of producing The Kappa Alpha Journal is primarily burdened on undergraduate brothers through their dues. However, it is substantially an alumni publication. By endowing The Kappa Alpha Journal we can alleviate this burden and expand our Journal development and production. Join the Loyal Order today for a one time fee of $299. You’ll assist the Order, our undergraduates, and receive our award-winning magazine, The Kappa Alpha Journal for life. One way to join the Loyal Order is through Forever KA. But Forever KA is much more. This is not a giving society; it is an opportunity for KAs to stay connected for life by supporting not only the Order, and the KAOEF, but also their specific chapters with a gift of only $18.65 per month. With this support we can continue to enrich the lives of so many. Your simple, automatic, monthly contribution will allow you to acquire a Loyal Order membership first, if you’re not a member yet. Either after that or if you are already a member, your $18.65 is split between the KAOEF, the Order, and a chapter specific fund of your choosing. Become Forever KA and keep the connection for life.
