Letter from the Executive Director Dear  Sisters and Friends of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Change, or die. That has long been my motto as I’ve led Kappa Delta Phi NAS, as your Executive Director. Ask any of the Board members and they can tell you I bring it up regularly. It’s what drives the work I do and what I push my fellow Board members to do. We are not a centuries-old organization. Our pockets are not deep. We do a lot with a relative little amount compared to our contemporaries. It can be at times frustrating, challenging and exhausting to do what needs to be done in order to keep the sorority going. However, it also gives us tremendous freedoms that larger and older organizations don’t have. We are able to be flexible; we have been able to redefine our work at a faster rate and are not bogged down by outdated ideals of womanhood and sisterhood. Our story is ever changing, growing and developing. For each of us, Kappa will take on new meanings as we experience changes and progress through life. Our Kappa stories will continuously evolve and as life unfolds, it is our responsibility to build upon the legacy left to us by our Founders. We must continue to reinforce the foundation, which has been set in place and nurtured over the past forty-seven years by those sisters who have come before us. We must do all within our power to ensure this organization continues to grow and strengthen while maintaining what makes this sorority so special in order to give new women an opportunity for membership and sisterhood and to make Kappa a part of their story.

As we move forward, the Board of Directors realizes the importance of having a significant presence at a national level, the need to ensure relevance, and the value of the sorority experience. Therefore, Kappa, as it has in the past, will continue to redefine itself through strategic planning, programming and leadership. We will continue our work to educate and empower women. But let’s not forget, the important role we all play as individuals in defining who we are as an organization and who we are as Kappa women. The power is within each of us to achieve greatness both personally and professionally. Kappa is an integral part of that and it is up to you to create a truly fun, meaningful and exceptional sorority experience for yourself and others. Every day we must set examples and pave the way for those yet to become sisters. The experiences we help to cultivate and the legacies we leave behind will create lasting impressions— all of which will affect the success of our chapters, our organization and our sisterhood. It is our most solemn duty to always live out the sorority motto. May the spirit never die sisters! In Kappa,

Summer Leadership Retreat July 26-28, 2019 Southern New Hampshire University Manchester, New Hampshire

Mission Statement

Letter from the President Dear  Sisters,. Fall has always been my favorite time of year. I find the calm of the first fall breeze to be invigorating, but for many of us it signals the beginning. The beginning of the new school year, the beginning of new adventures and for some the closure of a chapter of our lives. Each fall I return to my classroom and I am reminded of the reasons why I went into teaching and the reasons why I became a sister of our wonderful organization. I teach for the future and I joined for my future. In the spring, while we were together at Convention, I tasked everyone with finding their “why” and again at Summer Leadership Retreat, in my letter to you I asked again. Determining the reason we joined, the reason we stayed and beyond all. the legacy we are leaving. I am often asked what legacy I want to leave as President. I believe this is it, “Find your why, Live your why.” Each day I am reminded how important it is that strong women continue to raise strong women. I believe that the lessons we learn today, will help shape our tomorrow and working together you can accomplish any goal. I will leave you with my favorite quote that reminds me to continue on my path. “I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” —Robert Frost In Kappa,

Summer Leadership Retreat 2018 Recap Silver Bay YMCA, Silver Bay, New York For the second year in a row, active sisters gathered at the Silver Bay YMCA in Lake George, NY for Summer Leadership Retreat. This year each chapter was given the opportunity to send up to 5 active sisters. In total, we had 54 sisters from our 12 chapters and one colony in attendance. Undergraduate members participated in various team-building activities including a ropes course and a rock climbing wall, break out sessions and training seminars on fundraising, recruitment, risk management, and applying for awards, and had plenty of time to strengthen existing bonds and build new relationships with other chapters. Sisters spent time together going kayaking, swimming, and making s’mores by a bonfire. The big focus at this years Summer Leadership Retreat was the introduction of GreekTrack. This new program will allow chapters to pay their dues online, track their membership, track philanthropy hours, and have easy access to any forms they need. In addition to GreekTrack, members also worked on planning goals for the upcoming year for both themselves and their chapters. The budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year was approved and gifts of love to be given out at Convention were selected. Overall it was a fun weekend for active sisters and board members alike. Next year's SLR is already booked! July 26-28th hosted at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire. Stay tuned for more details! —Chynna Klaas, Vice President of Membership

Philanthropy Update: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention We are excited to be working with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for the second time in three years. This is a cause that we are all very passionate about as it impacts all of us in some way. This year we are striving to reach $25,000 raised in donations for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to present at Convention this spring. We are proud of the work that our chapters have been doing already to reach our goals, from Out of the Darkness walks, to hosting a 5K, to bake sales! Keep up the good work! As your Philanthropy Chair and as your President, I thank you. MTSND, Andrea McKevitt

CH A PTER REPORTS

F A LL18 06

Check out what your fellow chapters have been up to this past semester!

Kappa Chi Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, New Hampshire Fall semester has been incredibly successful and busy so far for the sisters of Kappa Chi. We have had an amazing rush season, held numerous events, co-sponsorships and fundraisers, and have been focusing a lot on sister bonding! For Fall 2018, our rush theme was 70’s tie-dye, where we used the slogan “All You Need is Love” on the back of our rush shirts (which we all tie-dyed ourselves!). For our rush theme, our affiliate educator decorated full of tie dye, sunflowers and peace signs everywhere! Some of our recruitment events included Sister Speed Dating, Craft Night with Chi, and a joint rush event with our Kappa Delta Phi brothers. Overall, rush season ended with us taking in fourteen affiliates this semester! Our philanthropy chair has been hard at work this semester getting us so many opportunities to serve the Manchester community. So far in the semester the sisters have been incredibly passionate about philanthropy, going as groups and far exceeding our expectations. Some of the philanthropy we have done so far is Give a Little Feed a Lot, Gearheads Annual Car Show, New Hampshire Food Bank and Kids Cafe. We have sisters that go to these events on a weekly basis, and people that spend their Saturdays and Sundays helping our community with projects which connects our sisterhood further through this amazing passion we all share. Our Vice President has been busy planning events for us and making sure we are making the biggest impact we can on our campus. During recruitment season, she planned an amazing Kappa Carnival event in which we had carnival games, prizes,

cotton candy and popcorn. A lot of our potential new members came and it was a great way to get to know them and have fun! Our VP also planned a co-sponsorship with us with our Community Center for Engaged Learning to present on Talk Saves Lives. It was an incredibly touching speech that we empathized with and helped us spread awareness for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to the SNHU community. We’ve been working really hard on fundraising this year, hosting Pie-A-Chi in the Green Space, where we played music and got SNHU students to pie us in the face! It was incredibly fun for sisters as well as the SNHU community. We had professors, faculty, friends, and our own brothers helping us out with a good ol' pie to the face. It was an incredibly successful event and we look forward to more events such as our “Dine to Donate” Chipotle fundraiser in the future! Although recruitment season has been crazy, the sisters have been easing back into our normal routines and working harder than ever. We have so many sisters participating in the Inter-Greek Council, Order of Omega, working on campus, doing internships, and getting involved at SNHU through sports and other clubs. We are one busy clan, and we hope to finish fall semester strong, academically, philanthropically, and financially! We cannot wait to see everyone at Convention in the Spring and wish the best for all of you as always! May the Spirit Never Die! In Kappa, the Sisters of Kappa Chi

07

Kappa Iota University of Southern Maine, Portland/Gorham, Maine So far this semester, Kappa Iota has participated in two philanthropy walks—the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walk and the Alzheimer's Association walk! We had a great turn out of both actives and alumnae at these events, fundraising over $500 for the AFSP, and accomplishing more than 100 hours of philanthropy as of October 1st! We are planning a third chapter walk in October in support of making strides against Breast Cancer! Recently we enjoyed an active/alumnae brunch, in which the active chapter met and bonded with more Kappa Iota Alum nae sisters while enjoying some treats! This semester we have eleven active sisters, and a handful of potential new members! Kappa Iota has participated in two fundraisers so far including a bake sale and candy gram sale, making over $100 in September! We are excited for our affiliate education program to begin, our future philanthropy's, fundraisers, and sister bonding! May the Spirit Never Die! In Kappa, Kappa Iota

08

Kappa Lambda Husson University, Bangor, Maine The beginning of the 2018 Fall semester for the Kappa Lambda sisters started off as all semesters should, with plenty of bonding and philanthropy. In the vein of bonding, the Lambda sisters have had many various social events such as “Kappa Kamping,” and “S’mores and more with Kappa.” For philanthropy, the Lambda sisters participated in the Out of the Darkness walk to raise awareness and money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This walk alone raised over $800 for the cause. Our 5K chairs are currently organizing a costume run/walk at the end of October. This is a very successful way to raise money for our national philanthropy and also a great way to raise awareness for our national philanthropy. Every week the Lambda sisters go to the Maine Veterans home

at least twice to play games with the veterans and keep them company. This is one of the most popular events, as all of the sisters love getting the chance to go give back to those that gave so much to all of us. Kappa Lambda also believes that while being philanthropic is very important, having fun and strengthening bonds is equally as important. One of the longest awaited events of the year is our formal event. This year the Lambda sisters have decided to open it up to Kappa Alpha Alpha brothers and sisters, the Lambda chapter brothers, and alumnae. The theme will be “Summer in December.” This is always a great opportunity for brothers and sisters alike to come together to socialize. May the Spirit Never Die! In Kappa, Kappa Lambda

Kappa Upsilon University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts The Kappa Spirit is alive and well on the UMass Lowell campus! Our new position of Wellness Chair has helped motivate the chapter to actively take care of themselves and improve their physical and mental health. As a wellness event, we had a dodgeball tournament with another sorority on campus. We worked hard during the recruitment weeks and now have eleven amazing affiliates who all seem to be growing quite close to each other. Picking up a large class has excited the whole chapter and everyone is bonding well with their little sisters. Every year, we participate in St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital’s Up ‘til Dawn Event. The entire chapter and our affiliates have already signed up and started fundraising for the event in December. We stay up from 10pm to 7pm to raise awareness and funding for the families of children with cancer.

10

We’re also actively fundraising for the annual Step Out Diabetes Walk in Boston. Last semester our new Alumni Chapter held an informative resume workshop. It was such a success that they’re planning to do a career day with us later this fall. To fundraise for the chapter, we had a car wash on campus that was successful largely due to the support of other members of Greek life on campus. We are also selling Otis Spunkmeyer baked goods as a fall fundraiser with a few other fraternities. Over the next several months, we’re looking forward to the exciting sister bonding events and becoming closer with our affiliates. We’ll be carving pumpkins together for a Halloween themed sister bonding. In Kappa, Kappa Upsilon

Kappa Alpha Alpha University of Maine at Orono, Orono, Maine What a busy start to the semester! Our sisters kicked off the second week of the semester by participating in formal recruitment and then two weeks later having our own recruitment! The turnout was great, and we can’t wait until our affiliates become official sisters!

Our homecoming is at the end of October and we cannot wait! We will be having brunch and catching up with all our Alumna that will be visiting! We also have a lot of sisterhood events coming up, we are most excited for bonding at the trampoline park!

Just this past month we have participated in two philanthropy events! We joined Kappa Lambda and walked in the Out of the Darkness walk, where each sister reached their goal of the amount they had wanted to fundraise! We also were at Riverfest painting faces and taking donations for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The turnout was amazing, and we raised more money than we had expected! We also have made some visits to the Bangor Homeless shelter as well to help distribute meals!

Kappa Alpha Alpha is flourishing and has so much planned! We wish you all the best of luck with the rest of your fall semester! We can't wait to see everyone at Convention in the Spring! May the Spirit Never Die! In Kappa, Kappa Alpha Alpha

Kappa Alpha Gamma State University of New York at New Paltz, New Paltz, New York The Kappa Alpha Gamma chapter has been up to a decent amount this semester. We started off this semester with twelve amazing sisters and hope to grow even more as the semester comes to an end!

wishes. Another event that we have done is raising awareness for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention during Suicide Awareness week. We made goodie bags with life-savers and a little note of encouragement.

We have seized many philanthropy opportunities. One of them was helping out with the Taste of New Paltz. Some sisters went out to help set up the day before the big event! Another philanthropy opportunity that we did was the Out of the Darkness Walk with our wonderful field representative and president, Andrea McKevitt. We were so proud of how much awareness we raised for this walk. We were in the top 10 teams that raised the most amount of money! As a team, we raised $1,400. It was amazing to go out and walk for a cause that is truly amazing. Some on-campus philanthropy events that we have done is the Make-A-Wish chain to raise awareness for the Make-A-Wish foundation, which is our local philanthropy. Students were able to come up and write a wish that they had and attach it to the chain of

Another accomplishment that we have had was having the highest GPA on campus out of the sororities. We always make sure to put our education first and it is amazing to see all this hard work pay off! You can always find a sister in the library studying away!

12

We have continued to grow our relationship with our brothers, the Alpha Gamma chapter of Kappa Delta Phi. We can’t wait to see our relationship grow more with these great group of guys! We can’t want to see what the rest of the semester will bring us! MTSND, Kappa Alpha Gamma

Kappa Alpha Iota Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania This semester, the sisters of Kappa Alpha Iota here at Shippensburg University have been hard at work and have some big plans. This includes philanthropy, events, and welcoming our six lovely new affiliates. Kelsey Schlecter, our recruitment chair, did an amazing job with our Adventure/ Campfire-themed recruitment and we are so grateful for her! With our quickly growing chapter, we are always excited to see the amazing skills and talents our sisters have to offer. Our treasurer, Angelica Timar, just designed us a beautiful set of sparkly letters that we absolutely love! We have a lot planned for the semester, but we have already accomplished so much. In just one month, we have completed 120 volunteer hours. At our most successful fundraiser so far, our Hot Dog Sale, we raised $130 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This is a foundation that is very close to our sisters’ hearts, and we are so excited to raise money for such an important cause. Our next big event we plan to sell bracelets to support the AFSP. Next semester, we plan to hold a “Dodgeball for Diabetes” event to honor our late sister Emily Norman, who passed away from diabetes complications.

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Juvenile Arthritis and the Fight to end Prejudice. Later this October, we plan to support our university’s Women and Gender Studies minor by attending "Love Your Body Day," an event hosted by the program that brings awareness to body positivity and self-love. Even with our rapidly growing chapter, we always remember to value the time spent with one another and use our sisterhood to better our community and our university. We couldn’t be more excited for everything this semester and the rest of this year has to offer. In Kappa, the Sisters of Kappa Alpha Iota

Not only have we raised money for our own philanthropy, we are always sure to support our fellow Greeks. We have donated around $80 to various other philanthropies on campus. This includes causes such as the Special Olympics,

13

Kappa Alpha Mu New England College, Henniker, New Hampshire Kappa Alpha Mu has had a busy and exciting start to the fall semester. We started off the semester strong with a bunch of new recruitment events our first and favorite was called “If You’re Going to Go Greek…Be A Goddess” our goal was to talk about what empowers us. Currently our chapter is gearing up for our annual fundraiser: Halloween Care Packages. We’re also making Boo Grams for students, faculty and staff to buy for each-other. Our chapter is setting up even more events for the fall and spring, and our sisters are busier than ever, with a total of six sisters graduating this year, Ashlie and Rebecca this winter, and Nicolina, Destiney, Haley, and Katie graduating in the spring. Recently Becca (House of Representatives, Representative) Destiney (VP, Affiliate Educator, and Treasurer), Haley (Secretary), Ashlie (Sargent-at-Arms, Chaplain/Historian) and Katie (General Member) were published in the 2018 Henniker Review, a literary magazine at New England College, with Becca as the Editor in Chief. Kappa Alpha Mu looks forward to an exciting school year and we can’t wait to see were our journey takes us.

14

Last we would like to wish our sister graduating in December, Ashlie and Becca, congratulations and good luck on your future endeavors. In Kappa, the Sisters of Kappa Alpha Mu

Kappa Alpha Nu University at Albany, Albany, New York The Kappa Alpha Nu Chapter is off to a great start this year. Currently we have 31 active sisters on campus and 2 sisters studying away from the University (one studying abroad in Spain and another completing a semester in Washington, D.C. as part of an internship). Our chapter volunteered for the Out of the Darkness Walk sponsored by our philanthropy, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Thirteen active sisters attended for 4 hours resulting in 52 total service hours completed that day by running the check-in table, handing out flowers to walkers, directing traffic in the parking lot, guiding walkers through the route, and giving out refreshments. In addition, our chapter participated in our University’s “Meet and Munch” event, a free event open to the public to encourage networking and connecting with our neighbors. Twenty active sisters attended and received 1 hour of community service, totaling to 20 community service hours. This brings our chapter to a grand sum of 72 hours completed thus far in the semester.

We’re looking forward to our “Mental Health Awareness Week” in late October. For the first event, we are partnering with our campus’ counseling and psychological services peer assistance program, Middle Earth, on an educational program. We will also be holding a bake/ribbon sale with raffles to raise money for the AFSP. We hope that people will purchase these ribbons and wear them around campus this day to spread awareness about Suicide Prevention. Our final event this semester will be a program partnered with our University’s “To Write Love on Her Arms” organization; a non-profit which aims to present hope for people struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and thoughts of suicide. We’re so excited to see what the semester has in store for us and to continue our growth as a newly established chapter. We wish a successful and memorable fall semester to all our sisters and can’t wait to see you at Convention this spring! In Kappa with love, Kappa Alpha Nu

Kappa Alpha  Xi Colony Utica College, Utica, New York A big hello from the Kappa Alpha Xi Colony! As we are the newest colony in this incredible sisterhood we have been busy emulating the values we all hold near and dear to our hearts. Our colony has been continuing to grow, learn, and give back to the community! The time we have spent collaborating has been so wonderful so far and we are so excited for what is in store for the future! During this fall semester we have 4 new affiliates. We are elated to be able to help them learn about the sisterhood and help them develop into the giving, driven, loyal, wonderful women they are destined to be! We currently have 18 amazingly active sisters who make our hearts whole. For philanthropy, we have been working tirelessly this past summer and semester coming up with new creative ways to raise funds and awareness and give our time. We have been very active in the month of September, being suicide awareness month. We took part in a social media campaign called, “You’ll See Me Tomorrow Because...” Here the sisters created a poster and gave the reason why they hold on strong into the new day, giving advice for those who may need it. We hosted an event on our campus called, “Dare to Care” where the sisters gave presentations about stigmas regarding mental health as well as tools we can all use to be a better ally for those who are struggling. Kappa Alpha Xi has also been able to raise funds for philanthropy by tabling in highly trafficked areas on our campus as well as our extremely successful event titled “Hold onto Hope” in partner with the counseling center at our school as well as other organizations. We gave a presentation on suicide awareness as well as interactive activities with our audience to ensure them that they are not alone. We had our counseling center speak about the services they offer, and we even had multiple raffle baskets that allowed us to raise funds! We look forward to the months we have coming up and the new ideas that our sisters endlessly offer. We cannot wait to see you all at convention again. Good luck to everyone we only want to see the best for all of our sisters near and far! In Kappa, The Sisters of Kappa Alpha Xi Colony

Alumnae Spotlight: Kappa Eta Chapter, Spring 1982 My name is Bridget Catherine McCabe and I am a Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority sister of the Kappa Eta chapter, University of Maine at Machias, pledge class of Spring 1982. I had the honor and privilege of pledging with five other women and being mentored by many amazing sisters. I know I am getting older because I love reminiscing about the old days on campus and telling stories of my sorority experiences both while in and out of school. A funny thing is these stories continue to grow as my relationship with the sorority and my sisters never ends so there are countless new stories added each year. I could tell you more stories than you have time for and sisters who know me could tell stories I don’t even remember. All of those individual story-creating experiences have made me the person I am today. Since graduating in 1985 my professional career has been in social services, primarily supporting individuals with disabilities and aging issues to live lives of their choosing. KDPNAS has always been significant in my life because of the relationships fostered by like thinking and key values held by our sorority making it different from any others I have come across.

Pride When I look back over my life—I am now 56—and consider decisions I’ve made, pledging Kappa Delta Phil National Affiliated Sorority, Eta Chapter, is in the top three best life decisions I’ve ever made! As a second semester freshman in 1982 with friends who were in the sorority, I thought this was totally for me. I am gregarious, social, and love a sense of community. I had no idea of the intensity and impact the sorority would have on my life, the sisterhood, the tenants of the sorority and how my life would be affected over the years. I am ever grateful for the relationships I have with some of the most amazing women in the world brought together by KDPNAS. Pledging was one of the most difficult things I have ever done and it helped me prepare for many of my life’s challenges. Of course, these challenges have been eased and made much more manageable by my sisters; I am never alone in this world. As an affiliate, I was proud to wear my uniform and march with other affiliates. I was proud to be put through my

18

paces and be welcomed into the sorority as a sister. Being a sister of Kappa is one of my greatest sources of pride; I put it on my resumes, use it as conversation starters and connections when I meet new people, and I have a bumper sticker on my car. To this day, I am proud to wear our colors and represent KDPNAS. Kappa is more than a sorority to me and has joined me in a life long journey with my sisters.

Devotion As an on campus student at the University of Maine at Machias in the 80’s I learned the value of relationships, loyalty, and commitment to others. We watched out for each other’s best interest, we offered support to each other, we made ourselves available to individual and group needs; “All for one and one for All!” Friendship, leadership and being part of a team were valuable lessons not always learned easily but most often with love and compassion. We try to pass on these lessons, beliefs and practices each day with others, personally and professionally. I see the results of this work in the hundreds of women still connected to our sisterhood. I see this devotion in the National Board, Alumnae Association, and others from chapters continuing these convictions to work with others to be a part of this amazing organization. Many of us wax and wane in our active engagement with the sorority but we are always sisters and join with each other when asked or needed as we are able. Many of us have strong, life long connections with sisters from many years ago as well as creating these ties with newer sisters. My life would be very different without my dearest friends who are also sisters.

Kindness “In a world when you can be anything, be kind.” “You will never regret being kind.” I love short, simple sayings with huge meaning to help me stay my path; these are two of my favorites. As an affiliate, the concept of kindness was drilled into us, trying to understand another person’s perspective, managing judgments, how we treat others. These were not easy lessons to learn and often painful but have stayed with me to this day and continue to be a work in progress. As sisters and members of our com-

munities we have many opportunities to make choices with many influencing factors. I often find myself in dilemmas to make decisions and I find using this premise helpful, when choosing an option with kindness, I am never wrong. I am grateful for the opportunities and friendships KDPNAS has offered me. I value the work the sorority does and the impact we all have on others through our message, volunteerism, networking and commitments. Respectfully Submitted, Bridget C. McCabe, Spring ‘82

KDPNAS Alumnae Association Dear Sisters of KDPNAS, Inc. What an exciting time of year it is! There is something magical that happens in the autumn months. We shake off the heat and sand of summer and turn our attention to school, sweaters, homecomings, apple, pear and pumpkin pies, renewing relationships, and meeting and making new friends. It is thoughts of term papers and grueling finals, anticipating Mom’s turkey and stuffing at Thanksgiving, the first snow of the season and rushing for new members to welcome into our beloved sisterhood that season our lives. Not many chapters of KDPNAS, Inc. still participate in fall classes, but I imagine that some might. Back in my day, back to the 70’s…okay Spring 1975, most chapters held both fall and spring classes, but we could NEVER pledge first semester freshmen. It was taboo at our chapter sites. Most colleges and universities frowned on it. It could have a less than positive effect on a freshman if she wasn’t used to college life, the need to become totally self-sufficient (work study, laundry, parietals, etc.) and a disciplined motivated student. We'll discuss the college social life another time, but I think you can empathize. I pledged in 1975, joined the Temporary Board in 1976, became the first national Vice President in 1977, and became a Kappa Rose in 1978—the same year I graduated. It was a fast and busy time for all of us. Working together with our brothers, we wrote a constitution, a pledge manual, a Book of Rituals and a national song. We adopted our colors and our motto. In those formative years, we spent hundreds of hours at Paul and Jeanette Collette’s home, and my reckoning of all those meetings have been etched in my memory. I remember our first President’s Cup—a gift from the Kappa Delta Phi brotherhood because we didn't have money to buy one of our own. We designed the first shield, pin, pledge pin and eventually the alumnae badge. The "Kappa Rose" (now the "Kappa Quill," and all the manuals for that matter, were done on an old-fashioned mimeograph machine. Deb Flint Wheaton and I would walk around my dining room table for hours putting manuals and the "Kappa Rose" together. Sometimes we had to borrow postage stamps from the fraternity and later, we were able to reciprocate when they had a need. All the while, we were adding to our chapter rolls and incrementally building a strong foundation for the sorority we love so much today. Nothing

20

we did then went away. The foundation lives on even though our sisterhood has gone through a metamorphosis to become what it is today. Oh, the memories. I was asked to write about the importance of becoming an active alumnae sister. I don’t think I can begin to share all my feelings, but I will try to share why I have chosen to remain an active alumna. I graduated from UMPI forty years ago (May 1978). I became the National President and then the first female Executive Director. There was still so much to do. In the meantime, my personal life went on just as yours has or will. I was a teacher. I married. I became a mother. I worked second jobs (didn’t everyone?), took care of elderly parents, helped take in new chapters, edited the "Kappa Rose," co-wrote an anti-hazing policy along with Bob Stomski of Gamma Chapter, raised a son, got to see the teen years all over again through my son’s eyes, went to graduate school at USM graduating in 1997, returned to USM to take classes in administration, helped build our National Alumnae Association, moved five times, had proud Mama pangs when my son graduated from high school, became a brother of Kappa Delta Phi, Iota Chapter in 2006 and then graduated from college. Imagine my pride in attending convention that year with my legacy: my son. Many brothers and sisters attended his college graduation. Many of the same who were with me on May 7, 1977 when we became Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, Inc. They included Paul and Jeanette Collette, Edward F. Webber, Mark Tschamler, Allan Zeller and so many others. Joshua’s graduation day was also Ed’s 50th Anniversary as a brother of Kappa Delta Phi, Inc. I think you get the picture. These memories are “the ties that bind.” They bind me to you, to countless Kappa Sisters who came before and after me, to our Kappa brothers, and to Kappa sisters and brothers who are no longer with us. I am your past, and you are my future. Even if I die, I live on through you. So why become an active alumna? There is a case to be made for those who are active beyond their college years according to researchers who found that 75% of Americans are active in some kind of group. The average American adult is active in some 3.51 groups of various types, and 14% belong to eight types of groups. They are happier, feel they

have genuine purpose, are more productive individuals and it allows for sharing similar ideals, beliefs and principles. Many feel that they have learned so much more about themselves and others than they might have had they not joined an organization and they feel they have a deeper consciousness about mankind. Sound like Sociology 101? We embrace our three degrees of sisterhood and the ideals instilled in each of us because of having affiliated with Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority. Inc. The newest sister in our organization shares the same ideals I espouse. She will espouse the same ideals that a young college woman will adopt in twenty, forty, or sixty years from now. I won’t be alive, but I will live on through her. Our Alumnae Association was incorporated in Maine on November 16, 1992. We went through the same process to create the Alumnae Association as we did to create and incorporate the undergraduate association, KDPNAS, Inc. We are organized “To perpetuate Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Alumnae Association, Inc. et al…” We exist to continue to share the bonds of our sisterhood, Kindness, Devotion and Pride, beyond our undergraduate years. We exist to be the keepers of our history. We exit to foster positive relationships and collegiality over the course of our individual and collective lifetime. We exist to take up the work of helping others wherever and whenever there is a need. We exist to love and to nurture our sisters (and brothers) in a time of need. We exist to be role models to our undergraduate sisters. We exist to exemplify kindness, devotion and pride in ourselves, our families, our communities, our individual states, our country and to be as far reaching as our world. We exist to support one another throughout our lives. Our National Alumnae Association has approximately 85 members. Some years we have more members and some, less. It takes determination to run the organization. Our organization is comprised of women of all ages, from all chapters and from all walks of life. Some live in other countries. We believe in our purpose and the fact that we are kindred spirits with all Kappa Sisters and the brothers of Kappa Delta Phi. We would like nothing more than to increase our membership and by doing so, increase opportunities to impact our world. We created the Graduating Senior Ceremony to welcome each graduate (and those who have had to leave college) to the rank of alumnae. We ask you to join us in our mission as we honor the vow that we made when we became members to perpetuate our Sisterhood throughout life. By way of information, the KDPNAS Alumnae Association has created the following awards or recognitions:

• The Alumnae Service Award 2006 - Formal recognition given to a group or individual who has contributed to the Alumnae Association or to the greater community on behalf of KDPNAS Alumnae Association, Inc. • The Alumnae Education Award 2009 - A financial award given annually to a randomly selected undergraduate at Convention. • Most Registered Alumnae Award 2009 - A annual financial award to the undergraduate chapter with the most registered alumnae at Convention. • The Calling All Angels Fund - A financial assistance awarded to a sister or brother in a time of need and who is nominated by a fellow sister or brother. The individual remains anonymous and the amount of the gift is based on available resources earmarked specifically for this purpose. As prescribed in our By-Laws, our Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, November 17th at the University of Rhode Island. Feel free to contact Jeannette Collette, Maryanne Burt or me for more information. All alumnae members in good standing are invited. If you aren’t a member now, you may join before the meeting. Additionally, we look forward to welcoming graduating seniors into our fold at Convention 2019 or any time throughout the year. Lastly, I want to take a moment to recognize a truly beloved sister, alumnae, Executive Director Emeritus, Kappa Rose and Lifetime Member, Jeannette M. Collette for her many years of service to the undergraduate and alumnae boards of our sisterhood. Jeannette has decided that she will not seek a position on the Board for another term. For once in my life, I am at a loss for words to adequately thank and honor this woman, our sister and my dear friend. Jeanette has given literally thousands of hours to our undergraduate and alumnae organizations, and to the brotherhood. We could not have built our organizations without her unwavering dedication, support and love. She is one of the few who have walked every step with me along the road from undergraduate to alumnae. She, too, has woven herself into the foundation of our organizations. She is a strand in the bundle of ties that binds. A thank you isn’t enough, but in saying “I love you my sister and my friend, I hope you know just how much you mean to me and so many others.” May the Spirit Never Die. In the spirit and love of Kappa, I wish each of you my best. Susan M. Dyer Taylor President, KDPNAS Alumnae Association, Inc. Executive Director Emeritus
