Letter from the Executive Director Summer has come and gone, and Kappa Delta Phi NAS sisters everywhere have found themselves in the ever-busy fall season. With fall comes an immense amount of change but also so many new beginnings. As the weather changes, many chapters are completing the process to welcome new sisters into our organization. New sisters who serve as the future of Kappa. They bring new energy, new ideas, new levels of creativity and new spirit as they begin their journey of sisterhood, and I for one am eager to meet them! Speaking of fall bringing about changes, this fall I have had the opportunity to finally pursue my passion for Greek Life in a professional setting. It’s something I have been working for, for the past eight years to achieve. It’s the reason I pursued a degree in Higher Education and shifted from the business industry into the Higher Ed industry. This passion has stemmed from my own time in Kappa in which I continue to feel called to volunteer for. It’s one I’m incredibly excited about and I know will make me not only a better professional but also a better Kappa woman. It’s here, in my work with college students, first at Tufts University, and now at MIT that I have come to appreciate what we bring (and have always brought) to our sisterhood. In my work, I often hear students ask one another, “What house are you in?” and what I find myself reminding them is that the more accurate question should be to ask “What chapter are you in?”.

counterparts in the larger organizations do not: A house doesn’t define a fraternity or sorority, it’s the members that define it. We have long since provided members with a sense of belonging and feelings of comfort and security that are not defined by four walls. The old adage of “Home is where the heart is” resonates deeply with me. For so many of us, Kappa is home. I hope the sorority is a home to you in the same way it’s always been for me. I hope you will think about the ways you can contribute your talent, energy or passion into making the sorority a home for yourself and your fellow sisters. It’s a responsibility that all members, both collegiate and alumnae have to work together to ensure that our chapters provide a sense of home for all members, both new and old. And finally, I hope to see you all at what I consider to be the greatest homecoming event, which is Convention! In Kappa,

Letter from our Brothers Greetings Sisters, Welcome back to another wonderful year with Kappa Delta Phi and Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority! We are looking forward to another very successful year. This past summer we held our annual Summer Leadership Workshop in Orono Maine hosted by Alpha Alpha Chapter. We spent a full day on Saturday working alongside Taylor Deer of Phired Up! We learned all about dynamic recruiting, social excellence and retention through recruitment. This is our 4th year working with Phired Up! and they never cease to slow down their presentations even when the A/C goes out! Â Our chapters have brought home what they have learned and are hard at work bringing in our newest members as I write this. Â We had 63 Brothers graduate last semester, one of the largest graduating classes ever! This is great news for our graduating seniors, but places even more pressure on our Brothers. We are confident though that they can return our numbers with new members using the tools they learned at SLW16. In November we held our President Treasurer meeting in Manchester, NH hosted by Chi Chapter. From the reports we received from our chapters it looks like we are on track for another banner year. Last year you were all in attendance for our presentation of $26,414.69 to Homes For our Troops. What you may not have realized is that our chapters also donated 3,278 hours to philanthropic causes, and $29,324.69 outside of our National philanthropy project. We are extremely proud of what each one of our chapters has accomplished last year and cannot wait to see what they bring to the table this year! Very shortly our Executive Board will be attending the Association of Fraternity / Sorority Advisors conference (AFA) in Boston along with your Sisters Executive Board. We are hoping that this opportunity will bring us new opportunities to expand within New England. Along the same lines we would ask that if there are any of the KDPhi NAS Chapters who would like to see us expand to their school please get in touch with us at National@KappaDeltaPhi.org We are always looking to expand, and with a group of likeminded women already on campus you would be a great asset in helping us reach our expansion goals. We look forward to seeing all of you in April at our annual joint convention. We wish you all the best of luck with your academics and work within each of your chapters in the upcoming year. Summer Leadership Retreat 2016

n a hot August weekend, active sisters gathered Camp Eaglewood in Elizaville, NY for our Summer Leadership Retreat. Formerly known as Summer Undergraduate Workshop, the name was changed at Spring Board meeting to better reflect the purpose of the weekend. Members of each chapter’s executive board participated in a series of team challenges and leadership development activities, including high and low ropes courses and a personal challenge—a rock wall climb. The weekend also provides an opportunity for active members to meet fellow sisters from our 13 chapters and colony, and to share their personal leadership successes and challenges. Each year, chapters send members of the executive board to take part in training and bring back what they learn to their chapters. The national board pays for members to attend - for SLR 2016 - chapters were able to send up to four sisters at no cost. 2017 Summer Leadership Retreat plans are in the works. AFA Annual Conference

n Wednesday, November 30th members of our Board of Directors descended on Boston, MA to attend the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Annual Conference. We have always sent a few board members in the past, but as this year’s conference was held in Boston, we were able to budget for a full five board members from Kappa to attend! In addition, we connected with our fraternal counterparts from Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity who were attending for the first time. Over the course of the four day conference our board attended dozens of educational sessions where we learned about best practices, gathered ideas to benefit our sorority and educated ourselves on the issues facing the Greek community today. We also spent time networking with other colleagues of Greek Headquarter staff as well as building connections with Greek Advisors at Universities we’re interested in expanding to. Finally, with the conference being held locally this year, we were able to meet up for dinner with other sisters of the Sorority Board allowing for some much needed in person bonding. This annual event is a highlight for our organization and is what allows us to not only get out name out there but to also build our knowledge base and skills that we can bring back and better our work for our Sorority and our members.

Kappa Alpha Alpha

hat an exciting year for Kappa Alpha Alpha! With the new school year ahead of us we wanted to focus on sisterhood and bonding together through new experiences, and this was the first time Kappa Alpha Alpha has done Formal Recruitment at the University of Maine. Through that process, we have gained experience, new memories, friends and above all three amazing affiliates to add to our chapter! We continued recruiting while holding informal recruitment events to bring in some additional wonderful women into our sisterhood. We kicked off the school year right by hosting two great events to raise money for the AFSP. The Darling’s Ice Cream Truck came to campus and we gave out free ice cream while collecting

donations for the AFSP. We also brought smiles to kids faces at a local fair by painting their faces for donations. We also participated in the Out of the Darkness Walk right here on the UMaine campus. We are so proud to annouce that we were one of the top three teams, raising about $900 for the AFSP! Kappa Alpha Alpha has also made a new resolution to become healthier together. We have recently started using a gym buddies page so that nobody has to workout alone! There are endless possiblilities for our chapter and we are hopeful each and every day that we can keep building up to be the best that we can be. Our sisterhood bond will continue to grow as we conquer all the sleepless nights studying for exams together and as we share the constant laughter during our events together. Kappa Alpha Iota

t’s hard to believe how fast this semester has gone! Kappa Alpha Iota is proud of how hard we have worked this semester all-around. In the beginning of the semester, we received 5 affiliates, and on Nov. 21, they became sisters! Kappa Alpha Iota is very proud of these new sisters and knows they will do wonderful things for our chapter. Please help us express our excitement and help us welcome Josie Dress, Moriah Hathaway, Brianna Carpenter, Kesley Schlecter and Kelsie Hauser, the Psi class for KAI!

We are happy to announce that this semester, we have raised over $1000 so far for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. To get this far, we have participated in canning events, even pairing up with Phi Delta Theta. We have also at-

tended a vigil as well for suicide prevention and can’t wait for what our amazing philanthropy chair, Allyssa Krick, has planned for the rest of the semester and the next one! To keep our close-knit sorority as wonderful as ever, we have had sisterhoods where we have decorated pumpkins, volunteered at the local food bank and let loose at our homecoming, where we spent much needed time with alumnae! The sisters of Kappa Alpha Iota want to extend warm wishes and happy holidays to all of our amazing sisters and want to congratulate all of our new members! We can’t want to see what everyone else has been up to, and want to let everyone know we are so happy we can be a part of this wonderful sorority!

Kappa Rho

he sisters of Kappa Rho have been working hard! From participating in a number of philanthropies to bringing in five new lovely ladies into the Affiliate Education Process. To help spread Suicide Awareness, our chapter focused on giving encouragement and information to everyone with Suicide Awareness ribbons with encouraging words written on the back and homemade bookmarks. We have also participated in our local Suicide Awareness Out of Darkness Walk and a Penny Wars fundraiser with our Brothers. This semester’s recruitment was centered on the wonderful world of Disney! Each girl was treated like a Princess throughout the week. Our events throughout the week embraced our love for Kappa

and Disney by our Aladdin themed info night, Lady in the Tramp Spaghetti Supper, and Royal Pink and Gold Party the day Bids went out! After a week full of magical events our Chapter welcomed four new lovely ladies into the Affiliate Education Process. Kappa Chi

he Kappa Chi sisters have had a very exciting Fall semester full of events, fundraising, and philanthropy. Our rush theme this semester was “under the sea” with the tagline “Welcome to Our World” and was really successful, we gave out 17 bids! We have been super involved on campus from hosting events such as our Kappa Chi Carnival to cosponsoring events on campus like SNHU’s Welcome Back Bash. We are also working on some events for October for Breast Cancer awareness with a tabling event with possible co-sponsorship from the two other sororities on campus along with a Breast Cancer Awareness BINGO night. Fundraising is in full swing for the AFSP with our GoFundMe page, our Pie-A-Chi event, a monthly prize calendar fundraiser in the works, and many more to come! We have also started putting in a lot of philanthropy hours with sisters being involved in a NEDA walk, collecting food donations around the city of Manchester for underprivileged families, volunteering at a car show, and volunteering at an Out of the Darkness Walk alongside NH State Senator, Kelly Ayotte. At the Out of the Darkness Walk sisters helped with crafts and gave out bubbles and waters at the end of the walk. The committee in charge even gave us the honor of saying the closing statement at the end of the walk. We have many more philanthropy events coming up as well including making holiday cards for the troops overseas and hopefully sending care packages as well before the holiday season.

Despite all of the sisters having busy schedules we still make sister bonding a priority from doing weekly sister dates to having family dinner at the dining hall or at someone’s place to painting pumpkins. The sisters of Kappa Chi can’t wait to see everyone at Convention and what the rest of the year has in store for us! MTSND! In Kappa, The Sisters of Kappa Chi

Kappa Sigma

appy fall from the sisters of Kappa Sigma! We hope that you all had a wonderful summer. As the seasons begin to change, we have started planning new goals for this upcoming year. So far we have had a successful rushing season, with many new girls across campus becoming interested in Kappa. At the beginning of the year we hosted a Greek-Carnival with two other sororities on campus in order to promote ourselves and Greek-life on the Plymouth State campus. The Carnival was a success and our president Annalisa Richardson, did a wonderful job with planning a good portion of it. Since then, we have had Alumnae Weekend which was an absolutely amazing time to see sisters – old and new – be brought back together for some food, fun and business. We have also participated in lots of community service so far this year, which includes: volunteering with children at the local schools, volunteering at the on-campus blood drives, volunteering for Autism speaks; helping out with the local food pantry and much more is to be eagerly planned. Sisters have also been planning more bonding activities in order to bring each and every one of us closer. We have planned movie and game nights, and nature outings, and we hope to be going apple picking together very soon as well, and we might even be adding a haunted house to the list!

We also have our national philanthropy in mind for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. We are currently planning to have sisters be trained as on-campus ‘gate-keepers’ to intervene in the correct way when needed. We also have a GoFundMe page set-up for the year and are planning fundraisers such as raffles, oncampus stations such as Henna tattoo and movie nights. We plan to partner with some of the local restaurants downtown while spreading awareness in the Plymouth community. This year we are very eager to meet our chapter goals and expectations. We look forward to what the upcoming months have in store for us. We hope that our fellow sisters at other chapters have had a successful rushing season. MTSND! Kappa Sigma

Kappa Upsilon

he fall semester of 2016 has brought quite the whirl-wind in events and activities for the Upsilon chapter here at Umass Lowell. From the start of the semester we have jumped into recruiting events such as “Kappa Kakes” where sisters and rushes can make cupcakes and play games together, all the way to the philanthropy days held to support and recognizing others going through difficult situations. Within the active chapter we have connected with eight affiliates that are all well rounded with great personalities and motivation, some being freshmen while others being transfers. As affiliates they have started to gain their own philanthropy hours from events like safe trick or treating on campus with children; writing letters to ESL students in local middle schools, and also supporting local churches with pumpkin delivery and selling. Lastly, one of the affiliates' biggest fundraiser/philanthropy has been participating in the preparation of Up ‘Til Dawn, where our chapter has raised over $300 alone so far for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event Up ‘Til Dawn has over 12 of our sisters participating, along with several affiliates, and requires everyone to stay up from 10pm to 7am, supporting St. Jude, raising money and participating in several team games to help everyone stay up and recognize the important cause. Another awesome event was the Step-Out Diabetes walk in Boston during October. Approximately ten sisters came to Boston to walk for people struggling with diabetes and take the time to listen to several survivor stories. Similar to this event was RAINN, which was held on campus and incorporated the affiliates. RAINN stands for Rape Abuse Incest National Network, which is the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the U.S. It is an annual day of action that our sisters and affiliates took part in to educate students about sexual violence on campuses. Our chapter

had tables with flyers and information about sexual assault, and we all wrote inspirational messages to victims and families. This event hit home for a lot of sisters and affiliates as some of us and our family members may have been victims in the past. Lastly our chapter as a whole has been working on getting closer as sisters. We dedicate one day a week between our business meetings and social events to spend time talking about ways to improve ourselves as sisters and as a whole. We also incorporate games that help sisters get to know different sisters more than they have in the past. Some of these events have consisted of spending time together at hockey games while supporting our college home team players. Other situations have been writing ways to improve communication on flashcards, and having someone else read them, then following a discussion of the ideas. Lastly, outside events count as well such as when the majority of the chapter met up on a Saturday, in the middle of October to all go apple picking together. The day was perfect and the apples were delicious, and after the picking was over several sisters went back to dorms to cook apple pies for one another. The majority of these events has so far helped KY grow together emotionally and physically with the affiliates, and as we always say “we may not have it all together, but together we have it all!”

Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Dear Kappa Sisters, Greetings from my new humble abode! I have dubbed it The Cottage in the Borough. I moved here in July and thus far it has been adventure. The cottage is a rental, and I am trying to remember what it was like to relive my youth between the Suites at UMPI and my first apartment in Portland. My son is grown, and I don’t require a lot of space and rooms filled with things—I have a storage unit for those. I don’t have to mow the lawn, and I don’t have to shovel snow. Yes, I have arrived to that part of my life when less is more. I am just a few minutes from Scarborough and Old Orchard Beaches, the Maine Mall, in town Portland, etc. I am not crazy about the heavy traffic along Route 1, but I’ll adjust. I hope one day soon be in an in-law apartment with my son and daughter-in-law so that I can have easy access to my grandchild. Yes! I am going to be a grandmother in April. My official title will be Mo’ree, which is Gaelic. As a matter of fact, the baby’s arrival date is the same as Convention weekend. The big reveal as to whether it will be a boy or a girl is Thanksgiving Day. Josh is going to bake a special cake for dessert. If the filling is raspberry, it is a girl. If it is blueberry, it will be a boy. What a blessed Thanksgiving it will be! I am so excited. I want to address each of you individually and collectively about a matter that is of deep personal concern to me and others—the KDPNAS Alumnae Association. Founded October 10, 1997 our mission is to perpetuate the ideas of Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority, our beloved sisterhood based on the premise that our affiliation is for life, and that sisters who wish to can continue to be an active part of our

beloved Sisterhood. We have an Executive Board, governed by By-laws, and we are incorporated. We remain as active with the undergraduates as we can and to the extent that the infrastructure of both organizations allows and that is significant. We have our philanthropies and raise money for financial gifts at the chapter and alumnae levels. We continue to espouse a kindred spirit that can never be extinguished. That said, as many of the original founding sisters of Kappa Lambda, Kappa Eta, Kappa Rho, Kappa Mu, and others from the early and mid-seventies continue life’s journey, we find fewer sisters taking an active role in the Alumnae Association. We have a genuine need for more Executive Board members, as well as participants at our Annual Meeting and to some extent, at Convention to help sell merchandise and raffle tickets, take subscriptions, assist with the Alumnae ceremony, and take pictures. Each and every alumnae sister is an ambassador to our undergraduate sisters and to our brothers of Kappa Delta Phi, Inc. and KDP Alumni Association. You, me, and collectively “we and us” are the embodiment of our ideals of Kindness, Devotion, and Pride. What I hope will happen is this: each and every graduate-to-be and alumnae sister will make their way to the Alumnae Table—join! We have both annual and lifetime memberships. Perhaps you would like to give your Big or other alumnae a gift subscription membership. It’s just $20 per year. You can find a copy of the membership form in the chapter Dropbox. I hope that you will use it now, or in the near future. Lastly, I want to share how proud I am of the Kappa Sisterhood for bravely taking on suicide

Sorority Alumnae Assocation awareness as a national philanthropy. Recently my life was again touched by the untimely passing of someone who felt there was no other way to deal with difficult life issues and depression. It is another tragedy. The need for social activism to help diminish or eliminate the suicides, suicide attempts, and the impact that they have on the lives of remaining loved ones and friends is real and growing. Though your efforts, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority is taking a stand.

Cooking with Jeanette Paul's Favorite Fruit Cake Ingredients: 2 ½ cups flour 1 teasp. baking soda 2 cups slightly beaten eggs 28 oz. jar of Nonsuch Mincemeat

1 can condensed milk 2 cups of candied fruit (I use 3 cups) 1 cup of chopped walnuts

Instructions: Grease tube pan with butter. Sift flour and baking soda together. Combine eggs, mincemeat and everything else in bowl. Mix in walnuts and fruit. Batter will be very thick. Bake at 300 degrees for two hours. Let cool before taking it out of pan. When cake is completely cooled and out of pan, make several holes from top to bottom of cake with a ¼ inch wooden dowel. Place a small funnel on top of hole and pour a little brandy into the funnel so the brandy will go through the entire hole to reach the bottom. Brush some brandy all over the outside of the cake. Cover and seal cake with foil to allow the cake to marinate.
