Who am I? Mum to two grown, successful and independent young men. I am a Canadian who chose to call Australia home over nine years ago in order to live an outdoor lifestyle all year round. What do I do? Monday to Friday I manage two simulation labs for the School of Dentistry at University of Queensland; the rest of my days are spent seeking adventures. Who inspires me? I’m inspired by family and friends who dream big, make their dreams a reality and tackle life’s challenges with grace and a spirit of adventure. What advice would I give my younger self? Learn to love yourself, live your dreams, stay true to yourself and your values, and surround yourself with a great tribe who will support and love you.
With everything from food, health, fitness, fashion and more covered in a fun and vibrant atmosphere, I’m confident there’s something to interest and inspire every single woman. I look forward to seeing you there.

Can I pick two... my grandmothers. They have shown me a love like no other, it’s never ending, it’s funny, it’s sticking it out through the tough times, it’s hard work. In one word, they have taught me “GRACE”. What’s one thing you couldn’t go a day without?

My daily phone call with Mum. She’s my best friend, plus if I don’t ring her she’s going to page me over the loud speaker at school (I’m a teacher).
“I am genuinely inspired by all the women who are surrendering to vulnerability, having the courage to be themselves and truly stepping up into their full potential. There are honestly too many to name, I see it daily. There is a real movement of the rising feminine; beautiful, raw and powerful woman and that fire inside is contagious and its spreading!” NATALEE, 33
Who am I? I am a writer, speaker and entrepreneur who helps women heal their body and soul through hormone balance, nutritional medicine, metabolic resets, stored emotional release, positive psychology, soul connection and lifestyle strategies. What is one thing you couldn’t go a day without? Haha my motto used to be, coffee makes it possible to get out of bed, chocolate makes it worthwhile! Coffee would still be a daily vice but I have also learnt to fast on anything that I am attached to so I can access my full internal power.

“There are so many women in this world that inspire me. I tend to notice those who have PASSION, COMPASSION, SERVICE and a DESIRE TO CHANGE TO THE WORLD.” CHARLI FELS, 51 Who am I? I am a woman who believes it takes a collective of all, to make a community of awesomeness. I help others to pivot particularly female entrepreneurs, through elevating their potential and purpose with design and a strong brand. 'Me' time. It's so important to centre yourself daily, appreciate life and be open to receive from the divine, diffuse some essential oils and listen to music.

Who are you? It’s one question that will make you stop and think for a second... but one of the most important questions we can answer about ourselves. Who are you REALLY? What do you stand for and what do you believe in? Who inspires you and who are YOU INSPIRING?
CAPTURED BY PAULA BRENNAN PHOTOGRAPHY
What is one thing you couldn’t go a day without?
“I believe that true beauty comes from within... I believe character is formed from chaos. And order is but a step away.” MARGOT, AGELESS Who am I? Having been recently widowed I am trying to find myself. I come from a strong ethical background of hard work and believe that all things are possible for those who believe. In my coaching practice I always look for the significance that is within and to develop that gift to its full potential. How old am I? Ageless! With a spring in my step and ready to live life to its fullest! Chronological age is but a set of numbers. Who inspires me? Apart from God I found Steve Jobs’s last words poignant and relevant, “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” Any advice for your younger self? Accept yourself for who you are, and make decisions wisely. Don’t worry so much about what others think of you. womenslifestyleexpo.com.au

In one sentence, who are you? Professionally, I am a business development manager and very fortunate to be able to work with very talented members of our design community however what truly defines me, is being a mother and a grandmother to my five gorgeous grandies. Who am I?
TRUSTYOURSELF Elizabeth Fairon has a passion for helping people navigate through family law, so much so that the successful lawyer has written a book to help as many people as she can. Last year, Carroll Fairon became Life Law Solutions to reflect what it is they really do: support clients by finding solutions to legal matters for everyday life. Their focus is on family law, as well as wills and estates law and property law (including conveyancing), delivering trusted advice with personallytailored solutions.
Elizabeth is the owner and principal lawyer of Life Law Solutions, with offices in Brisbane and Maroochydore’s new central business hub. Elizabeth has recently written the book Trust Yourself: How Empowered Decision Making Can Help You Resolve Your Family Law Matter, an easy to follow guide to assist clients with their decision making. Her expertise in personal legal issues and particularly family law, is supported by a real passion for assisting clients in resolving matters so they can move forward with their life. Her personal philosophy is very much based on clients having the right information and knowledge to empower them to make good decisions. A key aspect of that lies in getting out of the legal system as soon as possible. Elizabeth is well known for being able to convert ‘legalese’ that is confusing legal jargon into everyday language that we can all understand. By doing this her clients are empowered to take control and resolve their matter as soon as possible. Elizabeth began working at Frank Carroll Solicitors in 2005 where she went on to became a partner in 2009. In 2010, the firm was rebranded to Carroll Fairon, where Elizabeth worked alongside her mentor Frank Carroll until taking over the business as the sole owner in 2015.
Outside of practising law, Elizabeth thoroughly enjoys the challenges of owning and running her own law practice. She understands that having the right team and culture behind her is crucial to the firm’s success and her ability to support her clients through some of their toughest times. She is also committed to continuing and developing community engagement by supporting local businesses and organisations that meaningfully align with the firm’s values. Elizabeth has a life-long passion for learning and holds a Masters of Law and Masters of Applied Family Law. She is currently studying for an MBA to complete in the latter half of 2019. Elizabeth is also Chair of the Board of a leading domestic and family violence support service, providing information, support and counselling for people experiencing domestic and family violence in South East Queensland.
By equipping people with a deeper understanding of the law and legal system, plus working out what they really want to get out of the situation, clients are able to stay out of court or move through with greater ease. It’s a “must read before you do anything” book.
Life Law Solutions are holding workshops at the expo ‘Running Your Own Business’, ‘Surviving Your Separation’ and ‘A Basic Understanding of Key Legal Concepts’. Book your spot early to avoid missing out!
Contact Life Law Solutions on 07 5446 1745 or www.lifelaw.com.au where you’ll also find a link to Elizabeth’s book Trust Yourself and a weekly reflection journal 52 Weeks, 365 Opportunities. They will also be available at the Life Law Solutions stand at the Expo. womenslifestyleexpo.com.au

What is a topic you wish we would discuss more openly? A taboo topic that if we did talk about it could help many of us navigate our way through life? A group of local women answer this question, can you relate?
WORK / LIFE BALANCE “I wish we would talk more about the realities of work life balance. It is a marketing phrase that often boasts ‘we can have it all!’ Yet more often than not our balance is out of whack and we beat ourselves up for not having the balance right. If we were honest with each other I think we’d give ourselves permission to be happy with where we are at and just work towards finding the harmony for finding our own type of balance.”
“I wish we spoke about WHEN TO WALK AWAY FROM A TOXIC RELATIONSHIP, with partners, friends or family.” “Yes I agree. I think because I turn 50 this year I’m getting better at all of this. What I have learnt is no matter what, always be kind. Some relationships must end in order for new things or opportunities to bloom. It’s really hard to be kind sometimes when it’s toxic and there is emotional and physical abuse. Any type of retaliation or lowering yourself to their level just doesn’t work. I’ve had to bite my tongue in my professional life, and when things are toxic just let it go and be kind. It’s very hard to do, but why regret saying or doing something. Life is too short.”

womenslifestyleexpo.com.au
Miscarriage “Miscarriages. I suffered four between my two sons and nobody wanted to talk to me about it because they thought it was awkward. I started a closed page to express my daily thoughts/feelings/losses and invited friends to have a read and it surprised me how many friends had suffered miscarriages but no one knew as no one talked about them! It’s surprisingly very common!”
“I suffered a miscarriage on my honeymoon at a time I didn’t realise I was pregnant. People thought that because I didn’t know about it at the time that I was lucky and didn’t need to grieve. It had a profound effect on me and my life took a 360 turn for the better. I believe to this day it was a blessing because I took the time to reassess my life and hubby and I made real decisions about what we wanted. I did take the time to grieve, but it was a very confusing time.”
MOTHER’S GUILT “Working too hard, feeling guilty for talking time out for yourself, not being mindful when spending time with the kids and of course feeling guilty after yelling.... after asking for the 5th time to “put your shoes on and get in the car”, all common mummy guilt triggers.”
We need to talk more about motherhood. “Being or trying to become a Mum. From the stage of conception, pregnancy, loss, birth, parenting, finding balance. Such important topics. It’s so important we talk about it and find our tribe, the ones we can REALLY talk about it with, unfiltered, speaking our truth without judgment.”
Failure, it’s okay!
“We often have such high expectations of ourselves, often too high, and when we don’t meet them we despair. Often the goal was most likely ridiculous from the start. Being presented with the realistic picture in society is so important, that people fail, all the time, and that’s okay – in fact it’s an important part of most successful women’s stories!
SUICIDE “Eighteen months ago I was the one to call an ambulance after my own father tried to take his own life. Then I lost a school friend who’d had enough. A best friend’s son took his own life at 14 years old due to being bullied. I am the first person in the room to say it’s okay not to be okay, but it’s not okay to not talk about it. If you ever need someone to talk to it starts simply with a conversation.”

SHE’S JUST
rolling with it
Life sometimes throws you curve-balls, but powerhouse Carly Watterson says you just have to roll with it – and learn from it. The GFC saw this young, highly qualified futures trader return from Hong Kong to Australia to pull beers at the local pub. But her degree in international trade didn’t go unused for long, soon she would begin her own beauty product importing business that would prove wildly successful. “I wouldn’t say it was courage… it was more out of necessity because no one would hire me, so I created my own niche. If not for those circumstances I wouldn’t have been pushed to think outside the box and start my business. Sometimes from discomfort comes great opportunity!”
“I’m someone who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to take a chance – NO MATTER WHAT THE OUTCOME MAY BE. I love travelling and experiencing new cultures, because I think it really OPENS UP YOUR MIND and challenges your viewpoints. I’m also a straight talker… and a damn good Mum.” What do you do for a living? I’m the Managing Director of MU Australia. We specialise in distributing independent niche products within the body, bath, home fragrance and stationery arenas, and it’s a business we built from the ground up 14 years ago. Why do you do what you do? I love the thrill of discovering a new brand that isn’t yet available in Australia, then bringing that into the market and watching it thrive. And, as cliché as it sounds, I really love working with our suppliers and our customers because they’re all great people who are passionate about what they do. What is one topic you think we should speak about more in society, something that might be considered taboo, but would help others if we were more open about it? The reality – and every day struggle – of juggling work and home life. Social media shows these perfect snapshots of people’s lives, of mothers “having it all” on a daily basis, and although we know logically that it’s not real, it can still cause so much anxiety and depression. As women we need to show – and share – the “real” side more. And we also need to be comfortable asking for help if we need it, without fear of judgement. CARLY WATTERSON IMAGE SUPPLIED

Kara knows that marketing is more than just making something look great. After all, a pretty logo or social media post won’t mean anything if a business isn’t making enough money to stay open.

A recent project Kara has completed www.thrivefinancial.com.au
Her point of difference is a hands-on approach: she is personally involved creatively in all projects to achieve cohesive branding to meet your marketing objectives. And when it comes to getting your message out there, consistency is key. One point of contact for you also means greater flexibility, much quicker turnaround times and lower costs. While most business owners are experts in their individual industries, that doesn’t always translate to engaging social media posts, kick-ass digital campaigns, a cohesive website or nailed-it logo design. In a lot of cases, businesses understand they need something but are just not sure what, or where to even start. And that’s where Kara comes in, with the ability to work with businesses as their one-stop creative and marketing partner, taking client concepts and bringing them to life… and them some.
Two local charities have created a government funded pilot program to address the rising cost of living and the risk of social isolation facing single women over 55 years old living alone on the Sunshine Coast. Gail Middleton from Sundale and Lee Banfield from Coast2Bay Housing are leading the Better Together Housing program, which is designed to assist women find independent shared accommodation on the Sunshine Coast. Different to regular flatmate finders, this program is tailored to helping senior women find suitable accommodation in a safe and secure way. All registrants are thoroughly screened and police checked, then supported to meet other women looking to share accommodation.

The program launched in May and already has had many registrants and enquiries, proving more successful than expected and driving the organisers to start thinking about how to reach more areas sooner. “We have been asked when this will be available in Brisbane and other areas already. And although we have received funding for this initial test program on the Sunshine Coast we will require funding to scale the service and reach more people in need,” says Gail. “We are strong and independent women, challenging the status quo and adapting our living environment to enjoy a greater quality of life. This is a cutting edge program and we hope to pioneer the way forward for many like-minded women.” Gail’s words are powerful, and Better Together have already acquired a following of supporters on social media and in focus groups across the Coast. Registration is simple and can be done through our new website, created by Kara de Schot Creative + Marketing, along with beautiful branding and an email marketing system she has helped us to launch this new concept with a bang! the femeconomy effect Don’t you just love hearing about a new business idea where the premise is so simple it makes you think “of course!” But it’s an even better idea when the ramifications are huge. And by huge, we mean like shake-up-the-world-economy enormous. Femeconomy founders Jade Collins and Alanna Bastin-Byrne are the sisters-in-law with a simple idea to address gender equality. Or inequality as the stats would have it. Australia is only ranked 46th on the Global Gender Index which measures how much countries are doing to create gender equality. So, how does Femeconomy positively impact gender equality? By utilising the significant economic purchasing power of women to support brands that in turn support female leaders. When you think about it, who does the grocery shopping? Who purchases for the children? Who influences the car and house purchase? Women. “Shopping is already on a women’s to-do list. We are just asking women to be informed about where their dollar is going and how this can help gender equality for generations to come,” Jade says. Jade says a ride in a Melbourne taxi ended her own climb up the corporate ladder after 20
womenslifestyleexpo.com.au
she read a Harvard Business Review article that said women make 85 per cent of the purchasing decisions.
Women’s purchasing power through buying decisions was $818 billion last year in Australia alone. It’s a lot of money and Jade and Alanna want to see it being used to support companies that are closing the gender gap. “What an incredible economic lever women already have in their own hands to effect change,” Jade says. “As we all know, money talks. I became obsessed with the statistic. I thought, what if we identified companies that had women in leadership and asked women to buy from those companies? If more women are at the corporate decisionmaking table they can increase workplace flexibility and change mindsets around diversity and inclusion. They can also close the gender pay (and superannuation) gap, which equals more money for the whole family. “And research shows the company is more profitable, so there is more opportunity for everyone,” Jade says. Jade says she conscripted Alanna, who happened to have an international marketing
background, to join her. “Could we press for progress by mobilising the female economy? We quit our jobs in April 2016 to find out,” she says. What the pair has created is The Femeconomy Effect. Their website provides a search tool to connect shoppers with a wide range of products and services, as well as a support community for women. With women-owned businesses currently one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy, the pair is creating a community of leaders across Australia who are value-aligned and willing to explore new ways to advance gender equality. Without it, gender equality won’t be achieved in Australia for another 216 years according to The World Economic Forum, and as Alanna says, five generations away isn’t good enough for our daughters or our sons. “At Femeconomy we’ve identified which companies have at least 30 per cent women on the Board of Directors or are 50 per cent female owned,” Alanna says. “So, we are asking you to choose Woolworths or Coles over ALDI. Sorbent over Kleenex. And Shell over BP Fuel. At Femeconomy, women can press for progress every day by using the power of the purse. By choosing a female-led brand you will help create gender equality.” Find out which companies to support and how to get your company on board at www.femeconomy.com

CHANGING WOMEN’S LIVES
for the better
As a woman ages, her body undergoes changes that can sometimes cause a variety of issues. These include stress incontinence, painful intercourse, vaginal irritation or dryness or vaginal laxity. In the past, women would usually suffer these problems in silence – but that is no longer necessary. reViva is a non-surgical, non-hormonal, temperature-controlled radio frequency treatment, which gently heats the vagina and labia tissues to rejuvenate collagen and restore vaginal thickness and lubrication, without discomfort or down time from work or important activities. The treatment takes three 40-minute sessions, which are usually carried out one month apart. A single top-up treatment may be required after 12 months.
While this treatment is relatively new to our region, reViva (known elsewhere as THERMIva®) has been used in the United States since 2015. Patients that we have already treated are reporting very pleasing results. Find out if this new treatment option could help you. You can contact our practice at the Nucleus Medical Suites at Buderim Private Hospital by calling my practice today to find out more, or visit our website at www. revivasunshinecoast.com.au and find out how reViva is changing women's lives for the better. Childbirth and the natural ageing process can cause changes which may affect your wellbeing. Problems include vaginal prolapse, dryness and bladder weakness. The effects of menopause can also cause physical and functional changes. These situations can rob women of their sense of wellbeing and happiness.

NOT FALLING PREGNANT?
what to do
The first step may be to consult your GP, and discuss your situation. If you have been trying for 12 months, with regular cycles, or for six months if you are approaching 40 years old, further assessment would be appropriate. Your GP can order some initial investigations, and arrange a referral to a Fertility Specialist. If you are not sure, and just want some advice, you can phone our fertility clinic, Queensland Fertility Group Sunshine Coast (QFGSC) on 5314 3500 and speak to one of our nurses. Following a first visit with a specialist, further investigations will include blood tests for both partners, a sperm analysis for the man and an assessment as to whether the fallopian tubes are patent for the woman.
What to do? For couples who are having difficulty in achieving a pregnancy, there are sometimes obvious problems. In other cases, there may be no obvious explanation. Our team at QFGSC here on the Sunshine Coast can offer all the simple and complex procedures that are associated with fertility treatment. Our services include ovulation programs, intrauterine insemination, IVF, sperm injection, embryo biopsy to check for chromosomes or other genetic problems. We have sperm freezing, egg freezing and surrogacy programs. We also have an active donor program, including treatment for same sex couples.
VISIT DR MOIR’S WORKSHOPS AT THE EXPO See page 17 for more info
In summary, we have a wide range of fertility options for you. They may be significantly less expensive than you might believe. Each program is flexible, individualised for your needs and commitments, and cost effective. We have a good track record with results. And the final message, particularly for women, is don’t leave it until it is too late. Women’s fertility declines steadily with age, and fairly rapidly after the age of 35. Our IVF clinic is located at Suite 21, Ground Floor, 5 Innovation Parkway, Birtinya. QFG Sunshine Coast, 5314 3500. Dr James Moir Clinical Director, QFG Sunshine Coast 5444 0799

5 easy tips
WORDS BY KALI GRAY, APD Nutritionist My Food Culture www.myfoodculture.com
FOR MINDFUL EATING In health and nutrition, there is rarely a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Yet whether you’re struggling with overeating, digestive complaints or virtually anything in between, chances are that mindful eating will offer profound benefits to your health and wellbeing. In fact, I’m yet to meet a client who doesn’t benefit from this beautiful practice! Here are five simple steps you can take to invite greater mindfulness into your meal times. Dedicate a mindful space. Research shows that almost 50 per cent of Australians eat dinner in front of the TV! I encourage you to create a pleasant space in your home that’s free from television, where you can enjoy a meal in peace and mindfulness. Breathe before you eat. In today’s busy world, it’s easy to bring the rush of the day to our dinner tables. By simply taking a long slow breath in and out before you eat, you can calm the nervous system and breathe some spaciousness into the experience of your meal.
Practice gratitude. Take a moment to consider where each individual component of your meal has come from. Most food on our table is the fruition of collective work from folk all across the globe. By appreciating where our food comes from, we are more likely to slow down and savour the gift of the meal before us. Take a body scan. Many women I work with have lost their connection to appetite; after years of dieting and feeling guilty around food, they tend to oscillate between under and overeating. A quick body scan to check into how you are feeling throughout the meal can be a simple way to reconnect with your body’s natural cues for hunger and fullness. Make a joyful meal. One of the fastest ways to discover the power of mindful eating is to create a meal that you love! By lovingly cooking a favourite dish and giving yourself full permission to enjoy it, you can surrender into mindful eating with greater joy and ease.

DERMAPLANING WORDS BY NADINE DAVIN Skin Therapist Nurse Jodie Clinic www.nursejodie.com.au
• • • • •

• • • • •
Dermaplaning is a gentle and fast exfoliating technique where a specialised super-sharp blade is used to skim over the facial skin, removing dead skin cells and vellous hair. The result? Baby-smooth skin that glows immediately after treatment with no downtime. Dermaplaning stimulates the production of fresh skin cells, after the treatment, your skin is so smooth that skincare products will absorb more easily and make-up application is smoother. With no pain or downtime, this is the perfect treatment before a social event (hello flawless skin in your selfies!). It is a comfortable, relaxing procedure that can be combined with other services to improve their efficacy. Is Dermaplaning right for me? Dermaplaning is a great treatment for women with different skin types and colours in their 30s and older who want to improve the health and appearance of their skin. You will have noticeably brighter, softer skin that glows with renewed health straight after your first treatment. How often should I come in for treatment? We recommend coming in every four weeks to maintain results and continue to see improvement in skin tone and texture. Results are cumulative so your skin will continue to improve each time you come in. After a series of treatments, you’ll also notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation and acne scars. Is Dermaplaning safe? Dermaplaning is a safe procedure that can only be performed by a licensed and specially trained practitioner. Ask if your treatment provider has been professionally trained so you can enjoy optimal results. womenslifestyleexpo.com.au

FINDING THE
feminine
In recent times, words like ‘hustle’ have been glorified when it comes to women and business. I think it’s time we moved beyond this word as it is from an old way of being – a masculine way of being. When we operate our business from the masculine we put ourselves into action without meaning, often translating into being incredibly busy for the sake of being busy. Not to mention the effect of too much adrenaline and cortisol on our bodies. As empowered women we can choose to operate from a more feminine place. What I mean by this is from a space of focus, energy and attention on our business … without the masculine hustle. Operating from the feminine means moving into the receiving mode. When we are in the receiving mode we are able to give to ourselves first and foremost – whether it be self care, money, time or simply doing something creative that inspires us. In business, this translates into doing fewer actions that bring greatest impact (aka flow).
WORDS BY RACHAEL YURKO Financial Advisor Thrive Financial www.thrivefinancial.com.au
Some of the common things I hear from my clients are, that they earn decent money, but don’t understand where it goes – or that they’re living pay check to pay check, without ever seeming to get ahead. So, if that’s you, know that you’re not alone. But whatever your money story is, it’s not too late to make a change! What we teach at Thrive is a philosophy that puts you in the driver’s seat. It’s about making a switch to conscious spending, instead of force of habit. We believe if you learn to expect the unexpected – you can be prepared for it. If you’re ready to make a change, a great place to start is to think about which societal expectations you’re bowing to – at the cost of your family and financial future.
womenslifestyleexpo.com.au
When you give to yourself first and foremost, you can begin to receive in all other ways. In fact, this is when the masculine shows up to give to you – this could be in the form of the literal masculine (i.e. maybe hubby stepping up with the home duties) or perhaps more clients and money showing up in your business. So how do you know if you have lost some of the feminine and have moved into the masculine? Perhaps you are working hard in your business without real results, on the health front you may have some ‘spare tyres’ around your waist you can’t seem to shift (by product of too much cortisol) or you may have even seen money slow in your business. If this is you, perhaps it’s time to start moving into your feminine energy and balancing things up. It’s time to learn to ask and trust you will receive.
CONSCIOUS
When it comes to budgeting, sometimes, the hardest thing is to start... And after 10 years of helping people with finances, I can honestly say, money has never made anyone happy BUT without a doubt, lack of money can and does lead to a whole lot of heartache!
28
WORDS BY GENINE HOWARD Business Coach for Female Entrepreneurs Iconic Empires www.geninehoward.com
spending
There are two key concepts to making a budget stick – and the best thing is, they’re simple. First, you’ve gotta tie some emotion to your plans. So, write some goals. Be bold. Be audacious. But most of all, be you. Make sure you’re emotionally connected to your goals if you want to succeed. And second? Get organised! It’s so easy to throw money away unnecessarily when life continually takes you by surprise. So, if you’re not using an online calendar, sign up. Get your partner on board. Reach out to someone you know who meal plans. Look at how many gifts you plan on buying for the year and actually PLAN for them! If you know what’s coming up, you can grab things when they’re on sale, instead of rushing out at the last minute, wasting time and fuel and paying full price for something you probably went past last week at 30 per cent off. Give yourself permission to take control of your finances today. What are you waiting for? Your future self will thank you. You’ve got this.
DEMENTIA DEALING WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS
WORDS BY TANYA DAVE Gerontologist IAgeWell www.iagewell.com.au facebook.com/iagewell Dealing with loved ones who display difficult behaviours stemming from dementia or Alzheimer’s can be confronting, emotionally and physically draining. Behaviours such as paranoia/suspicion, agitation, verbal aggression and anger can throw carers into a downward spiral and emotional heap in no time at all. The constant badgering can be taxing on the mind and soul. Below are a few coping strategies to keep in mind. When you find yourself being drawn into the verbal battlefield, step away or just listen. Do not take words to heart. Understand that this is all part of the disease consuming your loved ones mind. Learn to confabulate, in other words, where necessary go along with the story they come up with. Don’t attempt to correct your loved ones version of events. Filling in the blanks to a story they can’t remember is part of their coping mechanism. Trying to redefine their version of events will only add to their frustration and anger. Direct your loved one’s energy and attention to a favourite song, memory, or game can help shift attention away from the feelings of paranoia or hallucination and bring them back to a calm and relaxed state. Keep a diary. Look for patterns and root causes behind these behaviours. Signs of pain and discomfort. The more information you collate the easier it becomes to manage your loved ones challenging behaviours. Organize your life. De-clutter. Too much clutter adds to the confusion. Routine should become your best friend. Give yourself a break every now and then to recharge your batteries. Do something you love. Never lose yourself fully in your caring role as it can lead to anger and resentment towards your loved one. Build a support network around you and delegate the workload. Keep those who find fault with how you are caring for your loved one and don’t contribute, at arm’s length. They are not walking in your shoes. Learn to trust your judgement.
If you could have five minutes with your younger self what words of wisdom would you impart? We ask our event sponsors to share their advice for their junior selves... Dr James Moir, Moir Medical Find your passion and follow it. Get out of your comfort zone. Seize the day. Will you look back one day and regret the things you’ve done, or the things that you haven’t done? Don’t work too hard, find a balance. You know what I would say? Look at all that stuff and then steer your own path, provided it is not illegal, immoral or damaging to others. Take a step back and look at what you have. A few years ago, I heard an interview with a young man who had become a paraplegic after an accident. He said “18 months ago, there were about 10,000 things I could do. Now there are about 9,000 things I can do”. He was excited. Make the best of what you have. Be good to yourself and you will find yourself being good to others. Elizabeth Fairon, Life Law Solutions
