An Exploration into Dialogical Architecture Ye a r : 2 0 2 3 So f tw a re U se d: Rhino, Revit, Photoshop This third year project explores conversations as architectural tools for creating designs. The conversations I had with the diverse people of Westgate allowed me to understand the city a lot more and create architecture that belongs to the ethos of the city. Drawing from William Leddy’s theories on dialogical architecture, this project sets out to explore the complexities of conversations within the built environment. Through a multifaceted approach that includes the perspectives of passers-by, university students, and workers, we seek to unravel the intricate web of social interactions that shape the site. The project weaves together a tapestry of interrelated dialogues of the surrounding architecture, culminating in a proposal that artfully blends elements from the surrounding architecture, while remaining steadfast to the ethos of the environment.

3 Dynamic Conversations In Circulation Spaces S ki l l s L ear nt : Model maki ng These models draw inspiration from research done on Conversations by looking into Kathleen Fu “Strangers in the Sky”, convinval architecture and responsive architecture. I explored the creation of conversations in circulation spaces. As these are often neglected spaces where one can have simple conversations. As a response, I designed models in my first term that aimed to encourage interactions and respond to the flexibility and importance of indeterminate spaces with multiple uses. Through these models, I was able to communicate specific characteristics and atmospheres that I believe are integral to the character of a space.

A Wa l k T h r o u g h We s t g a t e So f tw a re s Use d: Adobe Illustrator Cardiff, the diverse capital of Wales, attracts a denser population on matchdays due to the popular principality stadium which is close to the site marked in red. While walking through the city, I was captivated by the varied people I met, sparking conversations. Upon leaving the Cardiff Central train station, the area’s urban potential becomes immediately apparent. The Cardiff Council’s vision of establishing “a gateway to the Capital” is evident in the towering, glamorous architecture that adorns the streets. These strikingly beautiful buildings offer an irresistible visual feast, captivating the senses and inviting exploration into the depths of this developing metropolis. Through engaging in dialogue with individuals, a deeper appreciation for the site’s hidden treasures was achieved.

Building up from my conversations with friends, this first diagram was an abstraction of the memories I've recordeed on these trips with friends.

A Dialogue with Time So f tw a re Use d: AutoCAD, Illustrator The unit brief underscores the notion that buildings should respond to their intended functions, which can significantly influence the design process. However, in contrast to the typical approach of demolishing and rebuilding multiple buildings to cater to different functions, this unit brief proposes a different solution - designing a single building that can adapt and transform over time to accommodate multiple functions. The design incorporates a range of scenarios that have been rigorously tested to ensure its adaptability.

Dialogue with People II Sk ills L e a rnt: D iagrammatic Representation As a result, a booklet titled “Conversations with Friends” was produced. The dialogues emerged from various conversations, including discussions about different routes taken, skateboarders’ routes, routes taken on matchdays, as well as conversations about the site’s history, such as the Betty Campbell statue and school field trips. These diverse uses were to be highlighted and celebrated within the site, leading to the development of the informal pavilion.

DIALOGUE WITH PLACE

Borrowed Architecture Sk ills L e a r nt: Adobe Illustrator The primary design concept for the proposed building is to create a harmonious relationship with the surrounding urban fabric. The final elevations of the building are carefully crafted to seamlessly integrate with the neighboring architecture while still presenting a unique and contemporary aesthetic. Inspired by the historic Bluecoat building, the proposed design draws upon the use of surrounding materials, including natural stone and brick, further emphasizes the building’s connection to its context and ensures a timeless quality that will age gracefully over time. In this diagram, the various elements that make up the proposed building are illustrated, inspired by the borrowing of architectural elements found in The Bluecoat.

Render of final interior proposal The Colours of a Conversation S of t w ar e U s ed: P hot os hop, V- r ay As one strolls past Ty William Morgan from the east, a captivating sight unfolds—a columnade of ever-changing seasonal plants emerges, these respond to the already functional columnade around the site but this infusion of greenery breathes life into the concrete jungle. The Concrete walls and concrete floor slabs create a rhythm with the peaks of the winter garden eavesdropping from the sides. The atmosphere is busy with the people of Cardiff as they go about their day. Another element of the brief explains how buildings are to be discovered, the various elements like the reflective columns the symmetrical nature, the celebration of informal appropriation and so on. These are the hidden tresures within the final design.

REFLECTIONS

Photography Film Ca m e r a : O lympus Series I have used photography as a way to capture and record moments of the conversations I had with various people on the site. This served as a mind map for me to understand the various events of this city and intimate moments within the city.

Stories Retold Sitopia Reimagined Ye a r : 2 0 2 2 Sk ills L e a r nt: Concept Development In the heart of Caerphilly, amidst the remnants of a bygone era, lies a forgotten land that has long been abandoned. Over 500m2 of derelict waste and tar, once a testament to the Mining and Industrial Works that once thrived in the area, now serve as a haunting reminder of the past. But the people of Caerphilly refuse to let this space remain barren and lifeless. With a deep desire to promote sustainability and foster a connection with the land, they have set out to revitalize this site, to breathe new life into this space and nurture it back to its former glory. Communities have come together, united in their quest to grow new crops and vegetation, to promote a more sustainable way of life. Inspired by the concept of Sitopia, which explores the journey of food from production to consumption and its potential to change our planet, the people of Caerphilly are setting out to make a difference, to transform this forgotten land into a thriving hub of sustainability and nourishment.

SITOPIA REIMAGINED DEVELOPMENT

Design Development H an d D ra w ing/ Process Work The architectural drawing presents a visionary design inspired by the Caerphilly mines’ history, using steel and polycarbonate to create a metaphorical, enclosed dwelling hanging over the town. The fragmented model represents the interconnectedness of the community, while steel symbolizes strength and permanence, and polycarbonate signifies adaptability and transparency. This design honors the town’s heritage, blending the past and present, and invites contemplation on resilience, collective strength, and the transformative power of embracing both tradition and modernity in shaping Caerphilly’s future.

A FRAGMENT OF INDIA

The Cusp Of The Old And The New Ye a r : 2 0 2 2 C o m p e tition The Maharaja Agrasen Park is situated at the cusp of Old Delhi and New Delhi. The name refers to the different pieces of India the pavillion encompasses. The pavillion represents the transition and amalgamation between the old and the new architecture. Spotting references from mashrabiya common in Old Delhi and the bold and complex geomentry of the New Delhi Architecture.

The pavillion reminds people of the beauty of the vernacular architecture while encouraging a bold step towards innovative architecture.

Digital Art and Social Media Experience Sk ills L e a r nt: Poster Design As part of a collaborative project, I digitally designed an album cover using Photoshop, symbolizing “A New Blessing” and representing the concept of a fresh start. This opportunity allowed me to closely collaborate with the artist, creating a drawing that served as an ekphrasis of his music. Through this project, I gained valuable experience and developed new skills in translating musical expression into visual form.
