Dial-E for Education Guided by Prof Alka Hingorani This project aims at improving language learning methods in the remote areas of Himachal Pradesh. We aim to do this by invoking methods of story telling, human computer interaction and art installation among others. This project shall continue as a major project in my second year of Masters. After the field visit, I am borrowing from the artworks and stories created by the children to in turn create montages from the same. Following are frames from one such montage.

Typoday Runner-Up Logo Contest The high contrast modern font Pistilli Roman is used for ‘Typoday’. Pistilli Roman is a fine example of sensitivity and fineness in a font. It was hand designed by John Pistilli and Herb Lubalin and later digitized. It is a metaphor of attention to detail; made in the high point of the modern age. A sans serif raleway is used to balance the high contrasts serif. It’s rendered using patches of brown black ink to subtly hint at the practice of calligraphy and overall fluidity of the logo.

The aim of the class assignment was the information visualization of the 2014 General Elections. There was a lot of learning derived from Edward Tufte’s principles, here I employ small multiples to allow easier and overlapping comparisons.

Application Flow Design and Brand Identity for Lucedius’s UnHack App As part of a Visual Design Elective, I did the brand identity and application flow of a security app for Android OS. I offered Branding solutions, design guidelines and UI to the company. There was a focus of Micro-interactions in the assignment. The logo is inspired from the Fates, three sisters in Greek Mythology who are the incarnations of destiny. They weave the fabric of life and can cut the thread of any person’s life. They are daughters of necessity and responsible for maintaining order. The scissors cutting a thread is symbolic of them. UnHack maintains balance by cutting out the threads of applications that are unsafe and in doing so is the controller of their destiny. Bright yellow/ Gold is used to represent the authenticity and richness of the application, it being a Golden opportunity in itself.

Wearable Art Project - Shoe Art I intended to design shoes that reflect the opinions of the wearer, shoes that make strong statements, to wear such shoes would be an experience of its own make. These shoes allowed me a peak into entities, art, literature and personalities that inspired people. From Maya Angelou’s poems to Frank Zappa’s music, I was able to cover a largish spectrum. Furthermore the shoes led my work to be covered in a few fashion magazines and newspapers. Shoes: Art Class; tribute to Vincent Van Gogh

Comic Excerpts I have a keen interest in creating graphic novels, not only from the focus of an illustrattor but also as a story teller. Before joining IDC I worked on a comic called ‘The Question of Courage’. Later in college I have been working on a children’s story book about gender bending and alternate sexuality.

Paintings and Sketches I put my faith strongly in Art. Invoking art in the design process is most essential to me, and not just by means of aesthetics but the very meaning and politics of art. My work was exhibited once in Kuzart Lane and later in the Navbharat Centre; both at Hauz Khas Village. I enjoy working with mixed media. Image: Life Sketch, Charcoal pencil on paper
