HOUSING ON THE HORIZON Low-rise, High-density Housing Strategies for Luanda’s Expanding Periphery Angola is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in Africa. Rapid urbanization, coupled with severe housing shortages, has produced sprawling informal settlements throughout the nation’s capital, Luanda. This thesis explores strategies and prototypes for sustainable and affordable low-rise, high-density housing on Luanda’s periphery. The design portion of the project explores a model neighborhood for a micro-financed, not-for-profit development that offers residents the opportunity to own their units. It is intended as an alternative both to bottom-up, informal settlements and top-down, high-rise, governmentsponsored housing.

Late Colonial Period (1948–1975)
As a Portuguese settlement, colonial Luanda grew from a town of 60,000 in 1940, to a wealthy city of 475,000 by 1970. 26.3 % of the population was European. The late colonial period was characterized by racial tension and an anti-colonial civil rights movement.

Offshore Petroleum Deposits Discovered (1990–2002) After achieving independence from Portugal in 1975, authority was handed to an alliance of the three nationalist groups which quickly evolved into a brutal 27-year civil war. The city’s population swelled dramatically as refugees fled from the warfare in rural areas.

Luanda’s History Timeline
With the end of the civil war in 2002 Angola began rebuilding its economy, which grew rapidly due to oil reserves and diamond production. This new-found wealth inspired a major reconstruction boom.
Pull Migration due to opportunity
Luanda’s population has grown dramatically in recent years, due to both pre and postwar-time migration to the city. Rapid, ongoing urbanization coupled with severe housing shortages has produced sprawling informal settlements.

Incrementality has been incorporated into all units to accommodate flexibility. Living spaces on grade-level units can be converted into streetoriented retail spaces, as can terraces. On upper levels, at least one bedroom in each unit has been left open as a terrace to reduce the construction cost and pass the savings on to the buyer.

PROPOSED MARKET
Prompt architecture aims to use the strategic and incremental planning of donated shipping containers as a foundation to encourage piecemeal growth of public space and informal commercial infill. The project provides a 10-year economically sensitive vision plan for a vacant plot of land within the Ikhaya Le Langa township and incorporates a means for capturing rainwater for future use.

MAKER DISTRICT WORKSHOP
The workshop proposal is a superimposed axial intersection on the Somerset Bayswater site situated within the Hintonburg neighborhood. The proposal aims to carve an exciting new passage for pedestrian movement and maker activity. This urban axial approach creates new “streets” lined with workshops and art studios. The site’s workshops and residential facilities are separated by pedestrian paths. One of the paths form a shortcut from the western intersection of Hilda to Bayswater Avenue at the sites eastern edge. An outdoor public plaza enclaved by the artist studios and workshops create a second passage from Somerset to Wellington St W. The building also adapts to the seasons. In the summer large doors on the east-west axial path may be opened to let in fresh air and to encourage outdoor-indoor engagement. Through the workshop’s axial organization, the project aims to create a new artisanal district in the hopes of housing the up and coming craftsman within it’s innovative “streets”.

myBLOCK A New Artisan District myBLOCK takes the mass-produced spirit of today’s development industry and combines it with the community and privacy of suburban family homes. A prefabricated unit system can allow for multiple unit types interlocked into various formats. The assembly of the blocks creates spaces for unique gardens, private terraces, and public spaces. This strategy provides each unit with a sense of identity. With mass production becoming increasingly affordable and efficient, myBLOCK imagines a future with the midrise typology softening the clash between high-rise and low-rise, to create more harmonious environments.

THE STORY COAST Water, Cities, Equity Within the Kadıköy neighborhood in Istanbul, the most prominent cultural activity is the film industry. For this reason, our team focused on incorporating a new mixeduse development and a tram line that would highlight the industrial Heritage of the site while giving it an exciting new character with the addition of a movie studio.

Made in Şişhane
The Made in Şişhane project started in 2006 in order to reveal the potential of the Şişhane-Galata district. The aim is to show more creative visions for urban transformation and to point out other possibilities in the relationship between design and production. The project aims to reposition Şişhane as a creative district and contribute to the sustainability of the production networks there. This map shows the production process and the journey of the parts that were made to assemble the final product within the city. Textile

Timeline Visualization with Game Engines A Conceptual Frameworks for Disseminating Historic Architecture and Archaeology A current focus for research communities is the dissemination of architectural heritage and archeology through game engines. Interactive applications can facilitate the delivery of knowledge usually limited to specialists and make data easily accessible to interdisciplinary actors in the Cultural Heritage industry. Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and animated Walkthroughs are effective tools to aid in visualizing the timelines of historical assets both online and onsite. As an interactive component of the Virtual Historic Dublin project; The following research examines the application of game engine platforms (Unity3D, Unreal Engine 4 and Twinmotion) as storytelling tools for the Irish parliament’s contextual morphology.
Figure Above - Describes the Unity Engine libraries in use, b. Given reference names of game components and variables, c. Reference name for a function that. isolates the timeslider’s value, d. Function that disables/enables the mesh render based on conditional statements
