Working in between ground levels In the first weeks of the semester, we were given the task that enabled us to understand the spatial relationship between different ground levels using the concept of point line and plane. The first exercise required us to make a hole on a card and create a model that relates to the above and below ground. I made 3 consecutive holes on one side that had pipes protruding from below to the upper level. These pipes would gradually become one while going through another hole on the other side of the card. In here, I used the idea of putting point line and plane together with the holes as points, card as plane and pipes as lines, forming a whole new composition. I was also able to use this concept for comprehending on how to work with the above and below ground.
Concept of Growth/ Progression The second exercise asked us to produce a podium that explores the ground space using the development of point to line to plane. I started with one cube then another, piling them on top of each other to create a podium, which varies in sizes and colour for displaying certain objects. I then cut a hole through a card, taking the idea from the first task, and inserted the base cube halfway through it. With this, people were not able to touch the object, but were able to see it from above. Inspiration for the podium design

Working through the ground; Light and Dark Concept In weeks 4 and 5, we began to work with the concept of mass. The exercise introduced us to the solid ground, light, darkness and experiences. It required us to illustrate a section through a ground with light and dark spaces carved in it. In here, I formed a structure that had three holes cut through its ceiling or walls, allowing sunlight to penetrate the dark and voluminous space. This had carved out staircases that bring more light into the underground space where a water feature helps illuminate the area. Unfortunately, I did not focus on the brief of the exercise, which was to mostly work through the solid ground. However, with this task, I was able to understand the contrasting factor of above and below ground, and how the concept of light and dark can further emphasize these spatial grounds.

Working above ground; Views and Transparency In weeks 6 and 7, we were presented with the above ground space with the concept of frame and infill. The exercise was to produce a composition above ground or into the air with views on it from a 2 bays by 2 bays by 2 bays basis. To further help us with this task, we were to make this structure with flat, 1-fold, 4-fold and solid elements that created spaces for entry or circulation for the users. I made a house on a natural landscape that played with the frames and the elements, which formed balconies and large windows for people to view the scenery. From a basic 2x2x2 frame, I have suspended and recessed these borders to create spaces that overall developed into a house structure. With this exercise, I was able to comprehend the above ground with frame and infill, and its idea of transparency and suspension to create different experiences and places.

The initial task for the project was to research on spaces that demonstrated secrets as precedents. I have used some of them as the basis for integrating secrets in my design. We were then to visit Herring Island, the site for the project, and generate a site analysis for choosing an area in the given site. In here, I have done various studies on Herring Island’s adjacent public green spaces, circulation routes and use of spaces. With this, I have chosen an area where there was least interaction and use by the visitors that is at the southwest of the island. In here, there is also an artwork called “The Audience”, which inspired my main experience and design for the project, naming it “Performers to Audience”. We were also asked to create a conceptacle that would be the starting point for the project as well as the guide for relating the three spaces or zones of the ground. My idea came from the pathways in the island that showed ideas of growth, links and overlapping. This helped me realize how I would divide my architecture into three spaces whilst connecting them into one structure.

A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETS Idea of progression and growth and working with the ground with different levels and slopes
Point Line Plane
The site had a complex topography with varying slopes, which assisted in understanding how to produce the spaces and secret spaces.
Idea of light and dark
Mass
This is to emphasize the experience of performers to audience by the users, and to guide the design of the architecture and the materials to be used. Idea of suspension and transparency
Frame & Infill
The suspension is to make the various spaces in the architecture. The transparency is to create a floating experience and allow users to view their surroundings in the upper level of the structure. This also becomes the main component in dividing and connecting the inside and outside spaces, initiating the stimulating Architecture Design Studio: Earth 20027 effect of the secret spaces. 5
