As I look back on the last 10 years, I recall why we embarked on this journey—to create a catalyst for
growth in a region that once enjoyed a vibrant tourism economy, to provide access to the arts and bring music back to one of music’s most revered sites, and ultimately to help improve the quality of life in the community where I have lived and worked my entire life. Today, we see a bright new future taking shape in our county and our region, and we are proud to have helped to “keep the lights on.”
That sense of community extends throughout Bethel Woods and is part of our magic. Our community
includes our neighbors, our Board of Trustees and leadership team, as well as each of the more than two million guests who’ve visited with us, along with each performer who’s graced our stages, each employee or volunteer who ensures your stay exceeds expectations, and each donor, member and business partner who supports these efforts.
We also have a steadfast commitment to quality in all that we do, so that each guest who visits with
us comes away with an exceptional experience and a desire to return again with friends and family. That commitment extends from the caliber of artists we present to the stewardship of our historic site, from each of the 1,408 trees on our grounds to the lush green grass for which we are famous.
When Bethel Woods transitioned from a project of The Gerry Foundation to a 501(c)(3) public charity
in 2012, it became critical that the organization become self-sustaining. Today, like any non-profit organization, charitable support is necessary to ensure long-term growth and sustainability. I’d like to thank those who have given their time and dollars to support Bethel Woods’ mission. Without you, it would not be possible to increase Bethel Woods’ impact on the underserved, expand education and outreach, and preserve the historic Woodstock festival site for generations to come.
I’d also like to recognize those who helped to make Bethel Woods a reality, including my daughter Robyn,
who planted the seed to purchase and preserve the festival site, and all my family, who continue to support the organization. Also, without the support of our state, county and local representatives, as well as our team of architects, visionaries, contractors and builders, we would not be here today.

On our 10th anniversary at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, we celebrate our
organization’s many successes. Since opening our doors in 2006, we’ve worked hard to help transform our community by inspiring, educating, and empowering individuals through the arts and humanities.
We draw inspiration from our unique place in history, preserving and interpreting the
historic site of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair for generations to come. As proud stewards of an important legacy, we have conducted a Cultural Landscape Report that will guide the use and preservation of our historic site for decades to come. Through The Museum at Bethel Woods, we are becoming known around the world as a thought leader exploring of the lessons of the sixties.
Our reputation as a world-class venue for live music is unparalleled. Known for our bucolic
beauty as well as our exceptional guest experience, Bethel Woods annually ranks among the top amphitheaters around the world. Countless musical legends have graced our Pavilion Stage in the past decade, including the New York Philharmonic, Sting, Elton John, Phish, The Eagles, Taylor Swift, Jimmy Buffett, Jackson Browne, and Brad Paisley. Our intimate Event Gallery featured musicians as diverse as the Wailers, Southside Johnny, and Maureen McGovern, as well as some of the world’s most respected classical performers.
As our Education and Outreach efforts have grown, we’ve opened The Conservatory,
providing a platform for young and old to express their creativity, connect with other cultures, problem-solve, respect diverse viewpoints, and gain self-confidence.
We have become a resource and a catalyst for our community, sparking entrepreneurship
and economic development, attracting tourism, and creating an environment designed to encourage new investment and growth in our communities. Soon, as significant new attractions join Bethel Woods in fueling the region’s tourism renaissance, guests will find more reasons to visit, more places to stay, and even more to love about the Sullivan County Catskill region.

June 2 is a sunny, spring day. A warm breeze rustles the grass at the historic Woodstock site. The international media descends on Bethel with cameras, recorders, and notebooks. Live remotes transmit, feature articles appear around the world, social media comes alive. The Museum at Bethel Woods opens, and we are recognized by The New York Times, Good Morning America, The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post as the premier sixties cultural and exploration center. A multi-media thunderstorm rages in a re-creation of the festival, and everyone boards the hippie bus. The Museum becomes the Center’s interpretative focus, bringing people together to discuss the sixties. Families, friends, and classmates

Across from the Main Exhibit, we introduce a new, intimate performance venue, unparalleled in the region. The Turtle Island String Quartet, Brazilian Guitar Quartet and Time for Three are the among the first to appear in the Event Gallery along with David Bromberg and Richie Havens, representing diverse music in the elegant, glass- and cherry-paneled room. On The Pavilion stage, the Jonas Brothers’ “Burning Up Tour” is the first sold-out concert. Journey, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and The Steve Miller Band also heat up the summer nights.

They are doing great work at Bethel Woods.” —Michael Shrieve At age 19, Shrieve was Santana’s original drummer and the youngest performer at the Woodstock festival. He continues his legacy working with gifted young musicians from Seattle’s various cultural groups. He has written, produced, and performed on albums that have sold millions of copies worldwide and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
The heart and soul of our efforts, our volunteers donate their time and talents. Going forward, nearly 200 volunteers help shape our future through their devotion and continued hard work at Pavilion concerts, The Museum, Education, and Community programs, and administrative projects. Volunteers enjoy the camaraderie of being part of the Bethel Woods family and have a lasting impact on our community. And, they always smile.

We offer 27 Community and Education events as we advance our efforts to provide continual learning, connecting people to ideas past and present. Our programs serve over 60 schools and 2,000 participants from five states. Our Three-Day Teacher Workshop with the National Council for History SULLIVAN COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COUNTY-WIDE PICNIC DAY
Education and Arts & Education Conference are resources for educators from the elementary grades through high school. College students gain real-world experience through our internship program, gaining hands-on knowledge in accounting, public relations, production, development, and more. It’s a pivotal moment in the history of Bethel Woods that charts a new course, increasing community involvement and assuring a vibrant future under the leadership of independent, creative, experienced, and dedicated professionals who are working with staff to map our future. There are new opportunities for our friends to contribute. Commemorative Pavers at our entrance make it possible to leave permanent messages as a greeting to everyone who enters. We welcome 140 guests at a community fundraising event, our first Wine Pairing & Fundraising Dinner. The highlyanticipated five-course event sells out a month in advance, and raises $27,000 for youth initiatives, with increasing income each year. The family of innovator and philanthropist Richard O. Ullman creates a Memorial Fund to honor his memory and Mr. Gerry’s vision to support the Center’s role as an outstanding cultural resource for the region.

Support for our ever-expanding Educational, Outreach, and Museum offerings TEACHER WORKSHOP brings 51 programs and events to the Bethel Woods community this year. Four World Stage Series programs highlight the music and culture of countries as diverse as West Africa, Israel, Cuba, India, China, the United States, and the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico. Our staff collaborates with the National Council for the Social Studies for a three-day workshop, “Issues of the 1960s,� empowering teachers with stimulating content and innovative techniques for reaching their students. Governor Cuomo arrives at Bethel Woods, along with State Senator Bonacic, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and other dignitaries, with the news that Sullivan County has been awarded the only casino project in the region. The new Montreign Resort Casino will join us in revitalizing our economy and communities. As the Harvest Festival celebrates its 15th year, a new autumn tradition is brewing. The first annual Craft Beer Festival brings 25 regional breweries to the Market Sheds, along with food vendors and live music. The Wine Festival continues to grow. Local farmers, merchants, brewers, vintners, and craftspeople attract visitors from near and far. To guide our future, Bethel Woods’ leadership and Trustees embark on a comprehensive strategic plan to review past work, survey our current operations ALL THAT JAZZ
and forecast best practices going forward. As responsible stewards of this historic place, we commission the firm Heritage Landscapes to produce a detailed study of the landscape past and present that will strengthen interpretation and guide the preservation of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair site. Low clouds roll by, twilight descends, and a small plane passes over as Richie Havens’ ashes find a final resting place at the Woodstock site. Thirty members of his family, invited guests and fellow musicians pay tribute to one of the Woodstock “originals.”

In a tribute to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Museum at Bethel Woods presents Speak Truth to Power. More than 40 stunning photographs by Pulitzer Prize winner Eddie Adams, accompanied by stories collected by curator Kerry Kennedy, document human rights activists from around the world. Balancing political abuse, racial hatred and slavery with courage, service, and tenacity the exhibit powerfully documents the lessons of the sixties. More than 1,000 brave a chilly August 15 evening to celebrate the 45th Woodstock festival anniversary by watching the four-hour Director’s Cut of the 1970 OscarŽ-winning documentary Woodstock. Festival alums along with music and history buffs of all ages gather around a 30- x 40foot screen on the original festival field, recreating the 1969 event. Funds raised go to the preservation of the historic site.

PROJECT: IDENTITY
As public schools face new teach-to-the-test challenges, our ever evolving programs for students of all ages help to fill the arts and humanities enrichment gap. Project: Identity begins with the goal of inspiring creative expression for area teens. It concludes with performances in the Event Gallery, causing one participant to declare, “I felt like a changed person.” Mission accomplished, but there is so much more to do. Recognizing that our families are vital to a healthy community, we also include them in Saturdays at the Woods and our full-day summer P.L.A.Y. programs. 2015 This year our Education, Community Outreach and Museum programs reach nearly 30,000 children, teens, and families, as our donors help us expand opportunities, touch more lives and continue to inspire visitors of all ages. They participate in creative learning, exploration opportunities, and collaborative art-making with youth mentors, graduate students, and arts educators. Donations and grants enable us to offer assistance in the form of earned scholarships and transportation benefits. We collaborate with artists and scholars and community professionals creating arts-based programs on and off our campus, including partnerships with the School of Performing Arts at The New School, Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies, Boys and Girls Clubs, regional school districts, Community Teaching Artists, and Vital Theatre. We continue to develop exciting new initiatives like Bethel Woods on Main, which carries our presence into surrounding communities. And, our Artist in Residency will bring those with special talents to the area, making them available for in-depth experiences.

The Museum celebrates the freedom of expression found in the colorful fashions of the sixties with the special exhibition Threads: Connecting the ‘60s & Modern Rockwear, drawn from the collection of musician, designer, and stylist Andy Hilfiger. A festival-themed runway show featuring the collection raises $20,000 for our programs and is a fashionable way to welcome back the color and spectacle of Mysteryland on Memorial Day Weekend.

A day of high performance racing at the Monticello Motor Club generates over $21,000 and the Annual Wine Pairing Dinner amasses over $132,500. 2015 Estimated Economic Impact of Bethel Woods* Annual operations produced 519 direct jobs, which equates to 86 full-time equivalents. Including the indirect impact of Bethel Woods, an estimated 150 full-time equivalent jobs were created in New York State, of which 104 were based in Sullivan County. A total of $9.18 million in salaries and wages were generated in New York State in 2015, of which $4.58 million were earned in Sullivan County. Including the construction and continued operations of Bethel Woods through 2015, over $460 million dollars has flowed through the New York State economy as a result of the project.
