Music City! is a day long celebration of gigs, festivals and performances from dawn ‘til dawn. The city will become one giant stage and everyone is encouraged to take part. So get out, listen to or make some music and get involved. *All events are free, unless otherwise stated.
Dawn Chorus - An Grianan Grianan of Aileach 4.30am
Sky Orchestra Across The City 6.30am & 8pm Seven hot air balloons will take off across the city, each equipped with its own sound system, prepared to give residents below an experience like no other, in a unique piece of work created by Luke Jerram. Prepare to be amazed by this once in a lifetime experience as the skies come alive with the sound of music!
Music City! begins with the Dawn Chorus at Grianan of Aileach, one of Ireland’s most spectacular ancient sites, led by the Inishowen Gateway Choir. This free event will see hundreds join in the celebrations of welcoming a new day and the start of Music City! Traffic and access restrictions will apply and parking is available nearby. Later in the evening, from 9pm – 1am, Grianan of Aileach plays host to The Awakening Of The Horsemen, a theatrical feast of processional sculpture, aerial theatre, dancing fire and much more! Sync Initiative/Practice Makes Perfect: 4pm – 8pm The ground-breaking SYNC initiative has been taking place four nights a week in each neighbourhood of the city. SYNC is a ‘Music Promise in the Community’ initiative that offers free access to innovative music creation, vibrant collaboration, performance, production and mentoring opportunities for young people from all areas of the city. 4
100 Years Of Danny Boy Guildhall Square 12pm - 12.45pm The words to ‘Danny Boy’ were penned by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly in 1910. 100 years later and Danny Boy is one of the world’s most loved songs with hundreds of recorded versions by acts as diverse as Elvis Presley, The Pogues and The Muppets. At 12.30pm the children, adults and choirs of Derry~Londonderry will come together for a massive outdoor performance of ‘Danny Boy’ to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the world’s favourite song!
Neil Cowley Trio St. Augustine’s Church 1.30pm Neil Cowley, UK City of Culture 2013 Musician in Residence, returns with his trio for a unique, one-off performance in the confines of St Augustine’s Church. In keeping with his penchant for musical drama, pianist and composer, Cowley gathers some of the city’s leading voices to create The Mount Molehill Voices, a specially assembled choir to perform with him in the city’s oldest church – in surround sound. Some of the local acts joining Neil include Glenn Rosborough, Jeanette Hutton, Ruairi O’Doherty, Tracy Moore and John Deery. The One Voice Youth Choir are the special guests for this highly anticipated performance, their remarkable renditions of classic tracks having struck a chord with Neil on his first collaborative outing at the Nerve Centre during the City of Derry Jazz & Big Band Festival. 5
The Firstsource Singer Songwriter Stage in association with The Jammhouse
The Craft Village 12pm - 8pm The Craft Village will come alive as Firstsource join forces with The Jammhouse to host a singer-songwriter stage featuring: Our Krypton Son, Ard Ri, John Deery & The Heads, GRIM, Ronan Kearney, DAN , Rebecca Harkin, August, Paul Tully, plus the Winners of Firstsource Singer Songwriter competition Nate McCartney and Aoife White & Sharon White. Worry Dolls, winners of the Are You Legenderry competition, will also join the bill.
A Taste Of The Fleadh Across The City 1pm - 11pm Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the biggest celebration of Irish culture anywhere in the world, will arrive in the city from 11 – 18 August with a stop off along the way in Guildhall Square as part of Music City! to give an insight into what to expect during the week long festival. Organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will be an event of truly historical significance with the Fleadh taking place north of the border for the first time since its foundation in 1951. A Taste of The Fleadh will include performances at: 1.30pm: The Big Céilí @ The Guildhall 2.30pm – 5.30pm: Music from the Four Corners at An Cultúrlann featuring performances from Comhaltas Groups from Ireland’s four provinces. 6.00pm – 11.00pm: Guildhall Square performances There will be live music from some of Ireland’s finest trad musicians including Donal Lunny, Pádraig Rynne and Sylvian Barou; Dave Munnelly, Mick Coneely, Ryan Molloy, Rua McMillan Big Band. BBC Blas Ceoil will broadcast live from the event from 7pm - 9pm.

Roaring Meg Busking Competition Waterloo Street, Magazine Street and Shipquay Street 12pm - 5pm Gasyard Wall Féile are calling on all buskers to take to the streets for the Roaring Meg Busking Competition with the opportunity to win a multitude of cash prizes. Entries are encouraged from performers and buskers of all abilities to get involved in the event which will see the streets of the city centre come alive. Performers and buskers are being sought to perform for a maximum of two hours with hundreds of pounds in cash prizes up for grabs! Confirmed prizes include: £1,000 for Best Act, £200 for Best U18, £200 for Best Senior, £200 for Best Group, £200 for Best Male, £200 for Best Female and £100 for Spirit Of The Festival! All acts taking part will also be considered for a performance at Gasyard Wall Féile 2013. The winners of the Roaring Meg competition will be announced in Guildhall Square at 5.30pm. Walled City Tattoo
Double Bastion, City Walls 3pm - 5pm The Walled City Tattoo will take place at Ebrington Square from 28th – 31st August. At Music City, the organisers will present a taster for the event on the walls of the city with performances from Sontas & Colmcille Pipe Band. By drawing on the musical styles and influences of both their Irish and Scottish backgrounds, and filtering them through a musical bedrock of contemporary playing styles and arrangements, Sontas have truly developed a sound all of their own, both unique and exciting. Colmcille Pipe Band celebrate their 35th anniversary in 2013 and the Shantallow based band are former World Champions Grade 4a.
Beyond The March
The Playhouse, Artillery Street 7.45pm - 8.30pm & 8.45pm – 9.30pm Since November 2012, composers Brian Irvine and Sid Peacock have worked with the Londonderry Bands Forum, sharing insights into their own music making and compositional techniques, taking band members on a journey ‘Beyond The March’. Day. 10am - 10.30am: Eve Blair presents a special music-filled edition of Pure Culture live from the BBC Studios at Ebrington.
Sewing Machine Orchestra The Shirt Factory, Patrick Street 1pm & 7pm Quebec composer Martin Messier is a fan of old sewing machines – but not in the way you might think. He resuscitates old Singers put to sleep years ago in order to release, in some magical ways, the luminous and sonorous presence of the past. A complex and leftfield arrangement, the old machines are brought to life in a way never thought imaginable to create a sound like no other.

Community Hi-Fi Reggae Stage Mute Meadow 2pm - 9pm Community Hi-Fi is a Dublin-based sound system founded when, after many years of attending reggae sound systems dances in the UK and Ireland, a group of friends decided to assemble their own sound. Committed to playing roots reggae in a King David style, expect to hear uplifting music and vibes that everyone can enjoy.

Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club The Venue 2013, Ebrington 9pm - midnight Over the course of the 1990s, Buena Vista Social Club revived a forgotten repertoire (son, bolero, danzón and guajiro) that is now world famous. The line-up includes new musicians to take up the Buena Vista baton, such as the incredible singers Idania Valdes and Carlos Calunga, trumpeter Guajirito Mirabal and pianist Rolando Luna, in addition to veterans such as the great trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal. Gerard McChrystal & Craig Ogden Across the city all day As one of the world’s finest saxophonists, son of the city, Gerard McChrystal has collaborated and worked with Philip Glass, The Soweto String Quartet, tenor Tommy Smith and The Smith Quartet amongst others, at locations across the globe. He teams up with Australian guitarist Craig Ogden and returns home for a series of performances throughout the city that look to involve all of its residents.

Féile Grianán Áiligh join in the Music City! celebrations with a spectacular event at Grianan of Aileach. At midsummer, as the sun reaches its highest point and the northern nights are shortest, the Augers gather at the Sun’s Nest, Grianán Áiligh, examining the sky above and listening to the sleeping horsemen of the underworld below to glimpse what the future holds.
Get your dancing shoes on and get to the Nerve Centre to witness one of the most influential figures from the UK dance scene. Enjoying hugely popular residencies in the early eighties at Wigan Pier and Manchester’s majorly influential Legend, he became a pioneer of mixing in the UK and the first ‘dance music’ DJ hired for a regular weekly session at Manchester’s now legendary Hacienda club.
