Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) holds a huge variety of events throughout Northern Ireland which will not only entertain you, but will showcase the work that staff at NIEA do, and give you ideas on how you can help to protect our environment! These events include living history re-enactments at our many sites and monuments which bring our history and heritage to life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you will learn a few things about life in times gone by! We have seasonal events for smaller groups of people who wish to interact with nature. These include bat and bird walks, seal watching, photography, painting and other nature walks and talks.

Our large scale celebratory events are fun and will satisfy all the senses with many forms of entertainment and learning experiences for all ages! From bog snorkelling, following treasure trails, enjoying theatre, music, and local organic food events, to exploring special sites and properties that would normally be closed to the public. As part of NIEA’s contribution to the City of Culture 2013, we have made a marked effort to encourage a wide range of activities both within the city and beyond! By working in partnership with several organisations, we hope that these events will help to highlight Derry~Londonderry’s rich and fascinating heritage, while contributing to the year’s themes of exploration and joyous celebration. Look out for our unique Archaeology Days events in June, and this year’s European Heritage Open Days Weekend in September which will feature an impressive series of events also contributing to the celebrations in the city and across the province. You will find a very handy and simple map, highlighting a number of NIEA properties to take family and friends to for great days out.

Medieval life at Kirkistown Castle, Saturday 25th May, 1 - 5pm Celebrating Rory Dall O’Cahan at Dungiven Castle Park & Dungiven Priory, Friday 17th May, 2 - 4pm Limavady Borough Council will be unveiling a specially commissioned artwork by Alan Cargo and Eleanor Wheeler, celebrating the music of Rory Dall O’Cahan and the connections to the ‘Londonderry Air’ and ‘Danny Boy’ in the Castle Park. This will be followed by music from the Dungiven Harp School in the presence of a Living History monk in the chancel at Dungiven Priory, an Augustinian priory with a 15th century tomb of Cooey-na-Gall, an O’Cahan chief, who died in 1385. Our Living History Man-at-Arms brings this medieval Tower House to life. Learn about his life defending the Lough as one of the most esteemed soldiers of this period, and see and handle his formidable artillery. Killard Natuaral Nature Reserve Botanical Biodiversity Guided Walk, Saturday 29th June 11am – 2pm Guided Seal Watch at Cloghy Rocks Nature Reserve, Saturday 1st June 12pm – 4pm Coinciding with the annual Strangford Lough Maritime Festival, join Northern Ireland’s Environment Agency experts for a unique opportunity to watch seals up close in their natural habitat. This Reserve is the best place from which to watch seals in Strangford Lough, as at low tide, both common and grey seals haul out on the rocks to rest. Experts will be on hand to point out interesting facts about the seals – their features, behaviours and habits. Come along and experience the rich biodiversity of Strangford Narrows. Summer Solstice Celebration at the Giant’s Ring, Saturday 22nd June 12.30 – 5pm Join Lagan Valley Regional Park and NIEA for the Summer Solstice at the Giant’s Ring. Bring the family and a picnic to meet our ancestors, while celebrating this summer astronomical event. Our Living History Bronze-Age people will bring pre-history back to life with demonstrations of flint knapping, spinning and wood turning, as well as showing their weaponry as they tell stories of life in early times, and the significance of this unusual celebration. Igniting Carrick! Living History at Flame, the Gasworks Museum, Saturday 8th June, 1 – 5pm Meet some of the characters who ran the gasworks and learn how it brought light to Carrickfergus. Our living History ‘Thomas O’Hara’, the first manager of the gasworks from 1855 along with some of his staff will be on hand to give an insight into how gas was produced and used to light up Carrickfergus. Join a Living History bus tour around some of East Antrim’s most important historic sites. ‘Defences of Culmore’ at Culmore Artillery Fort, – a walking tour: Sunday 2nd June, 12 – 2pm Explore the history of this important artillery fort by taking a tour with Manus Deery, a principal conservation architect within NIEA. Learn about the evolution of the site and how its military function influenced the surrounding area and the importance of the fort during the 1689 Siege of Derry. ‘The book of Kells, the great glories of Western art’ at the Tower Museum, Book launch and lecture, Wednesday, 5th June, 6pm James Joyce claimed the The Book of Kells is “the most purely Irish thing we have”, yet the book may well have been created in the late 8th century on the island of Iona in Western Scotland, where a monastery had been founded by Colmcille. A new acclaimed edition of the Book of Kells by Bernard Meehan, Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College Dublin, offers new insights into its history and iconography; join him for a special illustrated talk on one of the great glories of Western art. Excavation with living history at Prehen House, Friday 7th, 14th, 21st June, 2 - 4 pm & Saturday 22nd June, 12 – 4pm This exciting excavation will be open to the public every Friday during June so that everyone will have the opportunity to find out what the archaeologists are discovering. On Saturday 22nd June, from 1 – 4pm, visitors will also have the added bonus of meeting one of Prehen’s earliest residents from the 17th century, who will tell stories of the characters who lived at this Plantation house over the years, and the events that took place there. Enjoy the view which includes its twin in Greencastle, Co Donegal and it’s setting in Magilligan Point Nature Reserve. Manus Deery from the Historic Buildings Unit of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, provides a personal contribution to the ‘City of Culture’ with this exhibition. This unique showing illustrates the development of the city’s architecture over time through 72 watercolour sketches, supplemented by brief explanatory notes. Today’s city is a complex place, influenced by its site, available materials and local traditions, yet displays influences from ideas across the world. It is a city with places of great beauty, and a robust character making it a city to be proud of.

Tour the historic city walls of Derry with Ruairi O’Baoill, archaeologist with Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork at Queen’s University Belfast, and author of “The Archaeology of Derry City and its Environs”.

Founded in the late 5th or early 6th centry, Killevy Church has been called one of the most important monasteries for nuns in early Medieval Ireland. Its founder, ‘Darerca, Daughter of Erc’ was affectionately known by her community as ‘Moninne’, and has been termed as ‘Ulster’s most notable woman saint’. The Peatlands Park narrow gauge railway has been associated with the area since the 1950s and is a big attraction for the young and old alike! The diesel locomotive can pull up to 40 passengers at a time on a 1.5km journey through leafy tunnels and restored open bog. Two of the carriages have been specially adapted to take wheelchairs. The revised Ulster Way route and accompanying website were launched in September 2009, providing a new 625 mile, (1,000 kilometre) circular walking route around the best landscape and scenery that Northern Ireland has to offer. This walking route presents walkers with an opportunity to view scenery and nature, encounter myth and legend, as well as sample the local culture through all the counties of Ulster. Many partners have worked together to develop this recently established route, which can be explored online at www.walkni.com/ulsterway or on foot around the country near you! The route also showcases the work of those who manage, protect and enhance this living environment. Meeting rooms and audio-visual facilities at visitor centres may be booked for holding meetings, seminars and conferences, provided they are not required by NIEA or other official bodies at the time. During the year we run a number of events at our properties at which crafts, local produce and other products are on sale. Should you wish to use such events to market a suitable product, NIEA would welcome your enquiry. A list of sites and properties (including contact details) suitable for such purposes can be found on pages at the back of this brochure.

Some NIEA sites and properties are suitable for holding special events, exhibitions and visits. These places include our country parks, countryside centres and larger historic monuments. Country parks are well-suited to events associated with the promotion of an active, healthy lifestyle and for sponsored walks. Historic Monuments, Nature Reserves and bird hides may be better suited to group guided walks and tours.

Please contact NIEA staff about any of the above opportunities and they will give you all the information and assistance you will require, including application forms, details on availability, conditions of hire and insurance requirements. For some activities you may need an NIEA permit. Applicants should also understand that acceptance of bookings outside normal opening hours cannot be guaranteed and will depend on the availability of staff.

NIEA will welcome applications from individuals, community, youth, church and environmental groups, charities, historical and other societies, and in some instances from commercial companies and tour groups, to use our more resilient sites and properties for their own events, exhibitions or outings. These must not damage the special features of the venues or reduce the enjoyment of other visitors. Our properties may not, however, be used for the public promotion of political parties or religious views. 54 A

There is generally no charging for the non-commercial use of open spaces at our sites or properties, unless there are specific associated costs that need covered. Group reductions may be made available for those sites where entry is charged such as Carrickfergus Castle and Dunluce Castle and for the ferry to Devenish from Trory Point. Non-commercial organisations will be charged for the use of facilities on a cost-recovery basis. For example, an evening event requiring staff to work overtime and the use of light and heating, may be subject to additional charges based on these costs to the NIEA. Commercial organisations will be charged at a full commercial rate and stallholders may be asked to pay a concession fee. NIEA staff may be able to offer extra services for specific events, including catering arrangements, guided walks, living history tours and so on; or they may be able to put you in touch with others who can assist you with your event. There will be a charge for such extras.
