HAMPSHIRE COMPANY LOBBY RENOVATION
CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL LIBRARY ADDITION
Hampshire Company Lobby Renovation Downtown Bridgeport, CT
Hampshire Company desired a major update and circulation rework of two entrance and elevator lobbies, including security stations. The dated interiors were transformed into sleek spaces with durable materials. Working with existing conditions and systems, multiple contractor personnel turnovers, and changing client requirements throughout the project was a continuous challenge; this is when I grew to love Construction Administration.
Congregation Beth Israel Library Addition West Hartford, CT The library and museum space in Congregation Beth Israel was insufficient for the synagogue’s collections. The integrated school also required larger, updated rooms with technological improvements. A small courtyard was the only place for expansion on the landlocked site, and care was taken to improve the appeal and functionality of the courtyard when the addition was built. Modern meets traditional in this small but complex addition. Many people from the synagogue were involved with this project, and I was able to help design a successful solution to satisfy a committee of clients and an ever-changing budget.
RIVER OAKS MULTI-USE DEVELOPMENT
HISTORIC MARQUEE THEATRE RENOVATION
River Oaks Multi-Use Development Simsbury, CT River Oaks: a hotly contested multi-use development just outside a quaint New England town. Much care was taken to assure the architectural style blended with the surroundings, traffic flowed smoothly, and small shops would not be overwhelmed by big box stores. River Oaks was designed as a community with many housing types, outdoor spaces, walkable streets, screened parking and anchor stores. The town of Simsbury was widely opposed to the development, and I was introduced to the sensitivity of town political situations, and to the importance of the Architect’s role in selling a project.
Historic Marquee Theatre Renovation Downtown Winfield, KS
A community organization has long envisioned restoring this old movie theatre into a live dinner theatre. Preliminary designs and renderings were created for fundraising purposes. Integrating new theatre technology and mechanical systems is a typical challenge in an area of town where many building basements still have original coal shoots and ice-cooling systems in place. The project is phased and emphasis is put on the initial code compliance updates. It is very satisfying to be involved in the initial planning of a project and help create a dream.
NAUGATUCK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY BUILDING
VIOLA RESIDENCE ADDITION AND POOL
Naugatuck Valley Community College Technology Building Waterbury, CT NVCC’s new Technology Building provides accommodations for the college’s Horticulture, Automotive, and Culinary Arts programs. The building serves as a new entry to the campus, and is highly visible from the adjacent interstate. Indoor and outdoor gathering spaces were created, and a bridge links the project to the adjacent building and main campus thoroughfare. Being on-site full-time during construction provided me with valuable insight into construction “culture” and administration procedures, and allowed me to become more assertive and confident in my skills.
Viola Residence Addition and Pool Arkansas City, KS
Originally a small farmhouse, this large home had been extended in nearly every direction, but was still lacking a large gathering area. This addition provides a large, very modern living room, a more traditional screened porch with outdoor kitchen, a garage and mechanical room, and a complicated pool addition. Gaining the clients’ full trust and successfully fulfilling a large wish list in a limited space is a rewarding experience.

A design-build project, this medical office building is adjacent to the town’s brand-new hospital. Budget was a large concern, and modifications were made throughout the project to ensure the budget was met. The fast-tracked project had tight deadlines and client design change complications. Working with the contractor to meet shared goals while adhering to a tight schedule is an enjoyable challenge.
Woodlawn United Methodist Church Master Plan Proposal Derby, KS The Request for Proposal from the client asked for a preliminary master plan, in addition to a firm’s qualifications. Phasing was a major consideration, as well as creating a workable program for the long list of needs given by the church. One of the challenges was to decide what existing space to use, what to add, and which functions to place where. Fundraising had not been started, and each phase needed to be flexible in its initial scope. This ambitious project required programming and space planning at introductory stages, and a fluid concept which was likely to change with budget.

ELLIS RESIDENCE - U.S. DEPT. OF VETERANS AFFAIRS ADDITION
Newkirk City Operations Building Proposal Downtown Newkirk, OK
Following a growing trend, the city of Newkirk is planning to combine their city operations (Fire, Police, and City Government), into one facility. Many proposals have been shown on various sites. A proposed “city corridor block will demolish unused, dilapidated infill buildings and replace them with continuously populated city services. The architecture blends with its surroundings without duplicating them, and these initial renderings and plans will help sell the building to the community for fundraising and tax support.
Ellis Residence U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Addition
Affected by Agent Orange in Vietnam, our client is funding this project with help from the VA. The bathroom, closet and storm shelter addition will allow him to stay in his home with a caretaker instead of moving to a specialized facility. Government regulations were strictly adhered to, and additional paperwork was required for all aspects of the project. Though the majority of the existing house is accessible, emergency exit accommodations were required. At a compact 175 square feet, this addition meets all of the client and governmental requirements efficiently.
