SYNOPSI S SYNOPSIS

You only desire what you can never have. But what if there was a way? What if you could have, just for a moment, whatever you have always wished for, longed for, worked for? Here’s the deal. Trade something that is worth what you want, and walk through the Door – see your dreams come to life; your deepest desires realized. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? But venture with caution. There are two catches: you will never regain what you traded, and be warned – what lies behind the Door is merely a mirage. Untranslatable into real life, what you will experience is but a transient simulation of joy. Trade something you believe is expendable, for pure – but ephemeral – bliss.

Would you bargain?

Welcome to the Cambridge University Chinese Society Variety Show 2016! Your presence will surely be of great pleasure to us. Have you ever dreamed of something that you would never be able to achieve? If there was a chance to see your dreams come to life for just a mere moment, would you sacrifice part of “yourself” in return? This is a quest on which that each of our characters endeavour. The temptation of that fleeting simulation of joy is irresistible; however, it buries them deep in the soil of regrets… While our characters are trying to find their inner strength, there will be fantastic live performances lined up for you. We have talented singers, bands and a breath-taking hip-hop dance duo that will surely amaze you. I know it’s cliché, but time does indeed fly. I had the first meeting with my committee members not long ago - and now, they are my buddies for life. I am very fortunate to have such an enthusiastic and responsible committee. They are irreplaceable. I would also like to take this moment to show my appreciation to the script writers, cast and members of the production and backstage crew for their efforts - without whom this show would not have been possible. We hope you enjoy this show as much as we do, but most importantly, we wish you will never forget it...

A word from the

DIRECTORS

“Too often, the thing you want most is the thing you can’t have.”

What is that one thing that you are willing to sacrifice to get yourself to your goals? Success? Happiness? Freedom? All things come at a price. The CUCS Variety Show 2016 is all about the law of sacrifice. Through the show, we hope to prompt the audience to think about what they treasure most in life and how far they would go for their treasures. We would like to thank all of you who have helped and contributed to the show. This show is more than a stage that allows the actors, dancers and musicians to show off their wonderful talents - it is a platform that unites the Hong Kong community in Cambridge. Many of us have been working extremely hard to make this show happen. We truly hope that the show would prove entertaining to our audience and our team. Special mention has to be given to the upper years, who provided invaluable comments to our team, particularly the Variety Show committee 2015. Let the show begin! Heidi and Shirley

A word from the

SCRIPTWRITERS

Some have said that the quest for happiness is what drives us on as humans - it is fascinating to imagine what one would give up for what one desires the most. I can think of a dozen things I would want, but would I give up something that I cannot get back, in exchange for them? At the moment, no, but I could picture the circumstances under which I would be willing. It so often is the case that we are so intent on pursuing our own definitions of happiness that we end up missing out on the other trials and tribulations in life. So, what is happiness? That is essentially the question we are asking. Is it simply having what you want most, or is it something more? It would seem obvious that happiness is intangible, so who can give it to us, if anyone? The answers lie within ourselves. Kaya, Shirley, Kenneth and Steph

Felix Joy

The youngest of the trio, this emotionally unbalanced 18-year old has always had a rocky relationship with his father, especially since the death of his beloved mother. Obsessed with the promises his mother had made, he is willing to sacrifice anything to see them realized and to see her once again - even if it means giving up what he should hold dearest to his heart.

This young businesswoman feels out of place in an office full of slick, highoctane magnates. Still, she remains committed and principled, believing that her perseverance will one day propel her to the upper echelons of the dog-eat-dog business world. However, all that is put to doubt when a condescending co-worker gets his own way at her expense, prompting a trip back to the Manager’s stall where she makes a decision she cannot turn back from.

Abigail

This fun-loving young lady is very protective of her two best friends. Sharp-eyed and fully content with her life, she is not tempted by the Manager’s stall. Yet, at her friends’ persuasion, she revisits the carnival, and what she believes to be a harmless venture beyond the Door may soon be a mistake she will regret.

霞姐

This loquacious waitress at the three friends’ most frequented local restaurant has also had her fair share of experiences at the Manager’s stall; her vivid narrations pique Abigail’s interest, convincing her to see for herself the alleged wonder that lies beyond the Door.

SHIRLEY WONG

I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things. All I know is I feel better when I sing, because music sometimes speaks way better than words do.

GEMINI

Gemini is a duo with two 1st year students, Rachel and Shirley, who share a passion for music. Surprised by the compatibility of their voices, the two decided to perform a soft but emotional piece - a duo version of Sam Smith’s “Writings on the Wall” from the James Bond movie, Spectre, to showcase their soothing harmonisation and vocal talents. They will surely wow with their powerful vibrato and vocal range!

EVANGELINE & EDWARD We are here to entertain ourselves.

THE VIBE

The Vibe is a hip-hop dance duo made up of two first year students, Rex and Shirley from Sidney Sussex College. Tonight, they will perform a short, but powerful choreography to Jason Derulo’s Bubblegum (feat. Tyga). With their perfect blend of individual styles and techniques, they will surely bring the atmosphere up and contribute to making tonight a memorable experience for the audience.

S.A.K.E.

Hello, the name of our group is SAKE, the intials of all four of us put together. We are going to do a cover of Sugar by Robin Schulz. We hope this is a refreshing and fun take on the song, and most of all, we hope that you enjoy it!

SIDNEY JOKERS The Sidney Jokers consist of two third year students Justin and Kelvin. Having performed at last year’s variety show, the duo decides to return to the stage for what is possibly their last performance of 無賴. While all good things must come to an end, the two are determined to put on a performance that will move your senses. Tonight, they will be bringing you back to memory lane. Being an acoustic set, they hope to present you with a simple, yet soothing arrangement of a few classics. With Kelvin’s incredible guitar skills and Justin’s indulgently mellow voice, the performance promises to be a treat!
