BULLETIN Masaryk University Career Centre 2015

Masaryk University Career Centre is a recruitment-consulting agency of Masaryk University that connects students and employers.

Šárka Karmazínová Managing director of MU CC

Our mission is to facilitate entering a job market to students and graduates of MU. We create development programs that are focused on competencies which are key for employment. We provide employers with recruitment services and we help to raise student's awareness of employers at the University.

In the year 2015 we won for the fourth time the National award for career consulting. This time we were given the award for „continuous quality of our services to students.“ We will continue to improve and develop our services. At this moment we are preparing a new MU recruitment web portal. The year 2015 was represented by many changes on our side. We created new web pages, updated the content of courses and we also broadened the list of services offered to employers. We would like to thank to everyone who supported us in the year 2015 and we look forward to continued cooperation in upcoming years. New web pages are a unique platform for employers who can use it to draw student's attention to advertise vacancies, trainee programs or projects that they offer. The ten newest job openings are announced every day on web pages from the Job market section of the Information system of MU. Employers can use an order form to communicate even more effectively with MU CC. After registering, students can enrol in courses, workshops and events organized by MU CC. The information about events that MU CC holds are updated in the calendar of events. Thanks to a new application called Career counselling, students can ask questions about a job market, their future career or about functioning of MU CC, all anonymously. Questions will be answered by our career consultants. All registered students have easy access to manage their personal profiles. They can create their own career plan, upload their CV and by these steps they start to build their career during their studies. Students continue to work with their career plan at individual consultations. Services to Students

Counselling The mission of MU CC is to aid students in finding answers to questions concerning their future career. Students have a chance to realize what they want to do after their studies and to discover how to get their dream job or they simply focus on other areas of their interest. During individual consultations students meet with career consultants and discuss particular issues and goals. Career Plan Consultations Students use a career plan to specify in what area they want to professionally grow. They set specific goals and plan time to achieve their goals during their studies. On the new web page of the Career Centre in a personal profile students can fill in a draft of a career plan. They can subsequently arrange a meeting and discuss the plan with a CC consultant. CV Consultation During the spring semester students discussed their CVs at the office of MU CC. With a winter semester a new concept of providing feedback on CVs came into place. CC consultants visited faculties directly.

Faculty of Social Studies Faculty of Economics and Administration Faculty of Informatics Faculty of Law Professional and Personality Testing In the year 2015 MU CC organized 2 professional - personality tests. The aim of these tests was to discover strong and weak character qualities of an individual in connection with his or her professional orientation, job search or studies. Professional and personality testing is a paid service provided by MU CC that can be ordered not only by students of universities but also by students from high schools.

lecturers Mgr. et Mgr. Radoslav Pittner and Mgr. Pavla Horáková

Students of this course discovered their strong and weak personality qualities, planned their professional direction, analysed job markets, created a well presented CV and their elevator pitch, a general presentation portfolio that can be used at a job interview. External experts were invited to lecture at this course (e.g., Daniel Šmíd, stylist and professional image consultant, gave students tips on how to impress an employer at first sight). The whole course ended with a model assessment centre after which students received final feedback.

Courses and Workshops Courses in the spring semester focused on adequate and effective presentation in front of an employer, mainly then on writing one’s own CV, self-presentation and the overall image. Courses were created to broaden student’s knowledge about the job market and obligations they have when they enter a job market. Courses were very well received throughout both semesters. Students valued the positive attitude of lecturers and the practical orientation.

Meet Your Career Self Many students do not know what they want to do in their lives. Do they want to control things or make things happen? Do they prefer to work with people or would they rather be alone? Do they need to have their tasks commanded or do they prefer the liberty to do them their way? The job market offers unlimited possibilities. This course was designed to help students to discover their strong and weak character qualities and to understand what kind of work environment suits them the best and how they can gather information about where they can find similar job offers.

LinkedIn: Let the Employment Find You LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools of HR. Almost 89 % recruiters found an adequate employee through LinkedIn. It is not necessary to search too much into the depth. It is sufficient to filter well-managed profiles. LinkedIn can be considered a real online CV, only more detailed and sophisticated. The aim of this course was to show students how to work with this tool and how to use it effectively to their benefit to make themselves visible to head-hunters.

Code Speech of HR Specialists i.e. How to Read Job Advertisements Every single word in a job advertisement has its own meaning. The course reveals how CVs and cover letters should look like and what should be mentioned at a job interview. It is not always easy to decode job advertisements. Students at this course learned how to correctly decode key words in work advertisements and how to use them to their benefit at a job interview.

Impress an Employer at First Sight The subconscious plays a significant role in decision-making. That is the reason why it is so important to leave a good impression at a job interview. A job applicant has approximately 30 seconds to do so! Only 7% of what the applicant says influences the employer, much more important is the appearance, dress, manners and the way the applicant enters the door (55%). This course explained how to leave a good impression. Students learnt basics of ethics, dress code for interview that suits their style and body type. Attention was also paid to body language.

Labour Law Does Not Bite It is not always easy to understand labour law. Although one who does not know it well can lose a lot of money. This course briefly introduces students to some logic and rules of the law to show them their rights and obligations. This course focused on different types of work contracts, what students should pay attention to before they sign a contract and explained how they can protect themselves against an abuse of authority.

What do you think about services provided by the Career Centre?

Marta Kuchařová Faculty of Social Studies MU

I have tried the services of MU CC several times and it was always absolutely professional. The toughest experience was an assessment centre where we were thrown into the reality of a workplace. We tried to defend our own project, experienced ups and downs and passed all kinds of psychological testing. Thanks to the task mentioned above I realized I must work on myself more.

If I had to choose one course of all courses provided by CC I would recommend CV consultation. You show your CV to a recruiter with a certain belief about what image you are sending out but you will learn that the recruiter looks at it completely differently. Thanks to that I realized many things I did not think about before.

Martin Pruška Faculty of Informatics MU

Martin Pruška got his first job thanks to his performance at an assessment centre organized by MU CC.

Andrea Mužiková Faculty of Social Studies MU

During a conversation with a career consultant we first talked about issues I deal with related to my career and what I would need to help with. After this session we agreed that it would be best for me to attend coaching that MU CC offers. A career consultant even referred me to a specific coach that she believed would be the best for me. She mainly helped me to understand what it is that I need to focus on.

The Career Centre provides a complete recruitment service - preparation of job interviews, pre-selection of adequate candidates or evaluation of chosen candidates. Among other offered services are personality testing and tailored assessment centres.

Meeting with Students

MU CC organizes opportunities for students and employees to meet face to face at university or during development workshops adjusted to specific needs of the company. MU CC also organizes events outside the University at JobChallenge, a job fair for students and university graduates.

Long-term Cooperation

MU CC develops relations based on an objective of long - term cooperation between employer and Masaryk University. It offers services made to measure packages that fit to the individual company. MU CC discusses launching new projects together with its partners and thanks to their feedback it implements innovation.

CC MUST WEEK a meeting with representatives of Career Centres from universities from all over Europe MU CC invited representatives of Career Centres from European universities to take part in a conference called CC MU MUST WEEK. The conference was focused on building relations with employers. tres Cen eer r a s 16 C tate 10 s ops h orks ts w 8 c roje 39 p

Participants of the conference searched together for answers to questions as how to create a well functioning business strategy, good service and attractive offers to employers with emphasis on the role of the university in the whole process. Representatives of the company Infosys were invited to attend the conference. They presented to Career Centre speakers the vision of what they as an employer expect from them. The first part of the program was oriented towards the transmission of experiences that representatives of MU CC obtained during the year 2014 at universities in the USA and in the year 2015 at career centres at the British universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

What was the vision of the conference MUST WEEK of MU CC and what are your plans for the future? Our intention was to interconnect similar university workplaces and open a discussion about establishing a European network of Career Centres. It was the first time an event of this kind focused on relations with employers as a key objective. In future the conference will deal with topics such as individual or group career consulting or technologies used at providing career services. Eliška Gončarová Main coordinator MUST WEEK KC MU

14

What is the vision of your CC?

Our vision is to develop a university recruitment - consulting agency. We want it to help students to find the best suitable job positions and to serve as a primary tool for employers to recruit MU students and graduates.

Radoslav Pittner MU Career Centre

Vision? In an ideal world there will not be the need for us to be present. Students will be capable to acquire the tools and abilities needed to find a job and build a career they desire. This scenario is not quite possible so we try to do our best to at least come as near to this scenario as possible.

Philippe Ory Career Centre of Ecole Polytechnique FĂŠdĂŠrale de Lausanne in Switzerland

I would like to modernize our consulting. It is extremely time consuming to do it face to face. We want to experiment by trying new models (e.g. peer consulting or e-learning). Susanne Orth Career Centre of European University of Viadrina Germany Participants of MUST WEEK CC (event)

JOBACADEMY CONFERENCE 2015 Career stories of successful graduates of Masaryk University Do you need education to be successful? What is success? These questions among others were questions of interest at the 3rd year of JobAcademy conference.

Successful graduates and speakers at the conference of all nine faculties of Masaryk University

Thirty successful graduates made an appearance at the conference, including the director of studio ČT MA Jan Souček, the Olympian sportswoman MA Šárka Kašpárková and the sales director of Czech google Ing. Jan Vraný. Students and graduates spoke in the panel of main lectures about their personal experiences and career stories and motivated the audience to take action and be proactive. The second panel consisted of workshops with interesting companies from local job markets and focused on job interviews. The accompanying program offered visitors a possibility to have their CV picture taken, practice a job interview (dry run) or discover how to cope with deciding paralysis.

16

What is the biggest benefit of the JobAcademy conference according to you? For me, it is without doubt the motivational power and encouragement to enter a job market. Thanks to the speakers I got the idea about broad opportunities of employment for graduates and university students. I learnt about valuable tips on how to behave at job interviews. I was also pleased by the overall content of lecture panels. The hidden message that I took with me was that it is not that important whether you plan your career future or whether you listen to your heart. Both ways take you to the destination. It depends only on the character of each individual. Markéta Brašnová Faculty of Arts MU

According to me, the biggest benefit of the conference was the real chance to get the answer to questions I am interested in. It is very likely that there will be someone who deals with similar issues as I do. All is at one place. The only necessary thing is to be at the right moment at the right place. Lukáš Astaloš Faculty of Informatics MU

The merit of the conference is the opportunity to meet young, successful people who are open to sharing their knowledge of how to self-develop or conduct business with others.

Gabriela Pirklová Faculty of Natural Science MU

JobChallenge Conference 2015 „What do employers want“ Organizers prepared JobChallenge conference to prepare students on a contact with employers at JobChallenge fair and self-presentation. The conference took place on the 22nd October 2015 at University cinema Scala. It was followed by a free e-mail course that applied all the knowledge presented at lectures at the conference.

89 exhibitors In the year 2015 89 exhibitors introduced themselves at the hall of the job fair. It was one third more than in the last year. Employers from public, private and state sector searched students from 13 different areas of focus.

21 lectures in 3 panels The accompanying program of the job fair was divided into three panels: the panel on soft skills developement, the panel focused on practical tips that could be used during a recruiting process, and the panel on employment where representatives of selected companies presented themselves.

What kinds of advantages have MU graduates at job market?

prof. JUDr. Naděžda Rozehnalová, CSc. deputy chancellor for student affairs

The main advantage is the flexibility that MU offers not only by vast range of areas of study but also by choice of courses, specializations and direction of studies and practical experience. One of the biggest mistakes is having a belief that graduates are non-employable because they are not practice oriented. We should not misplace practice with the amount of knowledge. Theory is something completely different. The high level of theoretical education with adequate level of capabilities and contact with practice already during studies may change a lot in this area.

What did this year job fair bring to you? I left the job fair JobChallenge 2015 more than satisfied. I learnt how to write a CV correctly and how to present myself at job interviews which will become very convenient in a near future. I received important information about Smaller Earth, a company thanks to whom I get a chance to spend a summer in the USA! All is still in process but I hope I get a job there. I found very interesting the brochure about all exhibiting companies where I could find useful information. I will definitely look in it when I search job.

Karolína Šimková Faculty of Education MU

Why are MU students interesting for you? During cooperation with MU and CC we had a chance to see for ourselves the real capabilities and skills of MU students not only at solving model situations during assessment centre but also when meeting students at the KB stand during JobChallenge. Students possess theoretical knowledge that is a basis for their potential, which will develop into practice. Thanks to CC they have an opportunity to be in contact with real situations in a job market and by that raise their competitiveness. Lukáš Mašek Komerční banka, a.s.

References and contacts Cooperation with MU Career Centre is fruitful for creating meaningful programs with clear results. MU CC representatives come with new and fresh ideas that we make come true together. We are looking forward to our future cooperation on next projects. Lukáš Mašek, Team leader HR Marketing and Recruitment

Event Let It Be Your Job at Faculty of Informatics was organized with the help of MU CC. For Net Suit it was the first event of this kind. MU CC created the whole concept of the event, designed the graphics and took care of marketing at University by various channels. On the day of the event it provided us with utility rooms, catering and support. CC ensured that the whole event went smoothly and as planned. We were satisfied with the number of students who participated as well as with their quality. Lectures and networking were very pleasant and feedback from all sides was positive. It is definitely not the last event we asked CC to coordinate for us. We would be happy to use their services in the near future for our events. Lenka Kastierova, Recruiter

Concerning the conference JobAcademy I was absolutely thrilled. I loved it; it was exactly how I imagined it. I hope it was enriching to students the same way as it was to me. Alice Hrubá, Senior HR Specialist

I would like to thank CC for the perfect organization of the fair. My colleagues and I agreed that the whole event was managed on a professional level and that it surpassed our expectations. The choice of the location was great as well as the preparation of stands, catering and care of hostesses and satisfaction of exhibitors. We really appreciate your creativity and visual concept, especially the idea with coloured oval boards with names of departments - it helped to navigate and communicate with visitors of the fair.
