Hard Work Pays Off! A note from Dean Lindquist’s desk… When you’ve invested a lot of hours and hard work into something, it’s always good to see it pay off. I’m happy to report that this seems to be the case within the nursing programs at MCCC! A lot of hours have been spent working on curriculum and planning program options over the last several years to ensure that quality higher education and nursing education at MCCC remain synonymous terms. Below is a synopsis of achievements: The PN to RN option was fully approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing during the spring of 2016. New students were welcomed into the inaugural cohort in May and have transitioned into the traditional program this fall. We’re very excited to support their goal of academic progression toward an associates of applied science in nursing degree and will be monitoring progress closely. Initiation of the program option was a big undertaking and many thanks go out to the faculty and staff that worked diligently in getting this option off and running. I’ll be monitoring student progress closely and hope to be able to report more good things by way of student achievement in the future. The results are in….and awesome! NCLEX pass rates for both the RN and PN programs are WAY above national averages. The 2015 RN NCLEX pass rate for students (on the first attempt) was over 94.59%, over 12% higher than the national average for the same time period. So far this year, I’m excited to report that the class graduating in December of 2015 had a 100% pass rate and the overall pass rate for 2016 thus far is 96.3%, once again surpassing the national average of 83%. The PN program is enjoying tremendous success as well! The 2015 NCLEX pass rate for PN students (on the first attempt) was over 90%, 9% higher than the national average. The class that graduated in December of 2015 had a 100% pass also, this time surpassing the national average for PN students by 17%! Two things are certain at MCCC: 1) MCCC has outstanding nursing students that work very hard and represent the college, program, and profession well within the community, and 2) MCCC has effective and dedicated faculty and staff who work diligently to ensure students receive quality education and have the skills and abilities they need to enter the work force and provide safe, quality care. I’m proud of both of them and am honored to be associated with such a reputable program providing quality education in preparing the next generation of nursing professionals.
