Hard Work Pays Off! A note from Dean Lindquist’s desk… Let’s see…student interest in the nursing programs at MCCC remains favorable. The number of applications to all programs is on the rise. Student achievement (NCLEX) outcomes remain way above the national average. And all is well with our accreditation agencies and MBON. So what is there to do moving forward? A lot! As we know, nothing ever stays the same in healthcare, which means nothing ever stays the same in nursing education. To remain competitive and provide students with the highest quality education, it is imperative that we persist as experts in our field. Faculty are charged with staying abreast of the latest and greatest in the world of healthcare, including emerging technologies and unfolding evidence-based practice. As educators, it is imperative that we educate ourselves on evidence-based and best-practice pedagogical strategies that advance teaching and learning. Fortunately, there is a lot of interesting research out there providing insight into how we can connect with students in the classroom, lab and clinical environment and how we can help them master the amass of knowledge unique to nursing. I encourage all of you to spend a few minutes each month learning about student learning and effective teaching strategies. Read a book on pedagogical best practices or the adult learner. Google an article on effective clinical teaching practices or assessment of student learning. Attend a conference promoting student engagement in education or watch a webinar on student-centered learning techniques. The options are endless and with a minimal amount of time, our proficiency as educators grows exponentially! I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to our students. I am confident that the education they receive at MCCC is stellar and the reason why the program and graduates are so highly regarded within the community!

New Initiatives in Nursing Education at MCCC MCCC is working to meet the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM)/Future of Nursing initiative to promote seamless academic progression in the nursing profession. This initiative will help ensure that nurses practice at a higher level in nursing to accommodate the aging population. It also supports seamless progression to enhance the number of nurses able to practice with advanced degrees. Therefore, MCCC is currently exploring options with university partners such as Eastern Michigan University and Siena Heights University to coordinate programs that would allow students to seamlessly progress from the ADN to the BSN .

Faculty present at the National TRENDS conference this fall! Trends is an annual conference held in the State of Michigan to provide education for faculty and staff teaching at occupational programs offered at various community colleges around the state. This year the conference was held in Detroit, Michigan at The Renaissance Center. MCCC was well represented. Nicole Garner, FT faculty presented, “Creating a Clinical Evaluation Tool” which highlighted her efforts in the development of the current clinical rubric used in the RN program for student clinical performance evaluation. Use of the tool has been very effective in documenting student achievement of program learning outcomes during clinical by students. Way to go Nicole! The lab staff, consisting of Monica Rancatore, Dawn Borgerson, Michelle Costlow and Lori Biggs (Nursing Program Coordinator) presented, “Innovation of Skills Assessment in the Lab; Use of the Interactive Validation Assessment Tool (IVAT)”. This is a new model used in the lab to evaluate student skills performance through the use of critical thinking, thus avoiding the use of rote memorization by students during skills evaluation. A special thanks goes out to the lab staff for their professionalism and teamwork on this initiative!

Annual Nurse’s March Students during N210 (Nursing Leadership and Management) have attended the Annual Nurse’s March held at the state capital in Lansing each winter for the past few years. Students have had the opportunity to get involved in their government at the state level by learning about and discussing the issues facing nurses in the workplace. They speak with state representatives and enhance their knowledge of legislation affecting nurses. A special thanks goes out to one of our faculty, Denise Robinson for organizing and facilitating the students’ participation at the March! MCCC was well represented by the total number of students in attendance.

What’s New for the ADN Program? The Delta Mu Chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society, currently in place at MCCC, has been well received since its inception in the fall of 2016. 3rd and 4th semester students are eligible to join based on the following criteria: 3.0 GPA overall, attainment and maintenance of a 3.0 GPA in all nursing courses and demonstration of professional conduct both on campus and in the clinical setting. Students were involved with a Capstone Stone project over the past 2 semesters which included volunteering in the lab by assisting 1st semester students and lab staff in general. All of the feedback from the Delta Mu Capstone Project has been favorable from everyone involved. The students who are volunteering have really enjoyed interacting with the 1st year students as well as helping the lab staff as needed. The lab staff have responded favorably as well and look forward to these volunteers in the lab. Those students who have benefited from having the 3rd semester students time and attention have been extremely pleased with those interactions. A special thanks goes out to faculty Dawn Lymond for her oversight of this outstanding group at MCCC!

RN Reminder! RN Pinning Ceremony is Tuesday, December 12th at 6 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater. Adjuncts welcomed!

SNA (Student Nurse Association) The SNA has been busy! The students have been busy with bake sales raising over $600. In addition, T-shirt/sweatshirt sales have also helped to raise funds. SNA members also volunteer at the RN pinning ceremony each semester. This semester they are gathering cards for Sophie (a stage 4 kidney cancer patient) and will be having a book drive that will support ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital and DMC Children’s Hospital. They have changed the SNA Scholarship to the Mariya Heinzerling Memorial Scholarship and through various donations, will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships this fall in memory of Mariya. Before the end of 2017, they will be adopting a family for Christmas and hosting the Medical Reserve Corp (MRC) training here on campus. Lastly, KUDOS to the SNA faculty advisor Dawn Lymond and her SNA members for winning Student Club of the Year for 2017. Great job all!

Tragic Loss for the MCCC 4th semester nursing student cohort MCCC experienced a major loss on July 27th, 2017 when senior student Mariya Heinzerling was tragically killed in an automobile accident in LaSalle Township, MI. Mariya will be greatly missed by her fellow classmates, peers, the faculty and staff at MCCC. Our condolences go out to her family.

PN Update Currently there are 12 students completing the PN program and anticipating their upcoming pinning ceremony on Thursday, December 7th at 6 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Center, Meyer Theater. The PN NCLEX pass rate for the class of 2016, based on information received to date, is 100%. KUDOS to the faculty that helped to achieve such outstanding program results for our students!
