More boho babe than beauty queen, the newest curls are a study in free-flowing fabulosity.
Painstakingly painted pout? Don’t bother. Color that looks kissed off is equal parts pretty and cool.

DIFFUSED LIPS 1 2 3
SPRITZ a texturizing spray onto damp hair
and blow-dry, using your hands to give the roots body and volume. Keep it messy and imperfect; smooth hair is not the idea here.
EXFOLIATE with a gentle lip scrub to
get rid of dead skin. Slather it on, then use a toothbrush—or the handy vibrating tool below—to slough away the flakes.
GRAB a rotating curling iron, as they’re
designed to create relaxed, beachy waves with the press of a button. Position the clamp about 2 inches above the ends. “This gives you that loose feeling so your waves aren’t too done,” says hair stylist Nathaniel Hawkins. It also helps to work in sections slightly larger than the diameter of the curling-iron barrel so you get softer, less defined waves. Rule of thumb: If your barrel is 1 inch, the sections should be 1½ inches.

PAT on a hydrating lip balm. You want to
smooth out any lines and cracks along the surface. Then blot off excess with a tissue.
SWIPE a pencil onto the center of your
lips while your mouth is closed, and blend out the color with your fingers for a soft, lived-in look. “Let the color set for a few minutes, then press it with a tissue so the hue appears a bit sheer and worn off,” says makeup artist Daniel Martin. (He says Kate Bosworth swears by this technique.)
FINISH by misting on more texturizer
and adding a shot of dry shampoo. “If it comes in an aerosol can, don’t shake it up a lot,” says Hawkins. “This way, not too much powder comes shooting out. You want a subtle spritz to leave hair with a gritty, modern vibe.”

Drop the Brush
“The trick is to not brush out the curls, since that produces too much volume,” says Hawkins. “Instead, turn your head upside down and shake it to loosen up those curls, then quickly rake your fingers from the scalp to the tips of your hair three or four times.” If you want more separation, apply a little texturizing cream.

Make It Pop
For a more high-def pout, apply lipstick straight from the tube, and blend it on your lips with your finger. “You achieve a certain payoff that a brush can’t replicate,” says Martin. To highlight the shape, trace concealer around your mouth’s perimeter with an angled brush or crayon, softening the edges with your finger. InStyle / YOUR LOOK 2014

onto your skin with a buffing brush. What’s that? “It’s like a giant toothbrush,” says Martin. Unlike a wedge sponge or traditional makeup brush, this new tool is shaped to easily glide around the contours of your face, and it features a pad of bristles that evenly distribute particles, sans streaking. Working the brush in circular motions, blend foundation onto your skin starting in the center of your face and moving out to the edges, says Martin, “the way you would wax your car. This technique creates a beautiful airbrushed effect.”

Forgot the rules of eyeliner 101? Good! A rebellious feel is the goal now—think bedhead for your eyes.
It’s OK to fake it. Hairpieces do more than just supersize your length—they’re also a great way to boost volume (and hide hair loss).

APPLY primer to your lids first for longer-
lasting color. Then trace around your eyes with a dual-ended eye marker, one tip with black liquid liner and the other with metallic green, blue, or purple cream shadow. (Jewel tones flatter most complexions and eye colors, says Martin.) Work the liquid liner over the top lashes and dot along the bottom, then blur the edges with a pointy cotton swab. “This update is smudgy and sexy—it’s a party-girl eye,” says Martin. “Plus, it’s easier than a hyper-finished smoky version.”

The beauty of this look? It’s less dramatic than the standard smoky eye, so you don’t need to go bare everywhere else. Try a berry lip stain or balm with a touch of sheen, says Martin. A contoured cheek works too. “Just sweep a bronzer into the hollows of your cheeks and underneath the cheekbone for a little definition,” he says.
