ADAPTIVE REUSE : process of reusing an old site or building for a purpose other than which it was built or designed for.

TARGET : ESCOMPTO Building. Previous functions include bank, hospital, and office. Located in Jakarta Old Town.

Location

ESCOMPTO is located close to many important historical sites of Jakarta:

ESCOMPTO is located in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Specifically, in the Old Town area or “Kota Tua”. The neighborhood was the original downtown area of Jakarta during colonial times. Today the area is preserved as heritage site of “Kota Tua Jakarta”

ESCOMPTO previously functioned as one of Batavia’s major banks before it was acquired by the government of Indonesia. It stays true to its original function even to this day as it now serves as archives and office for Bank Mandiri. 1859 – Used as bank by Nederlandsch Indische Escompto Maatschappij 1949 – Became Escomptobank NV 1960 – Became government-owned Bank Dagang Negara 1999 - present – Was restructured & became part of Bank Mandiri Present use: office, part of Bank Mandiri

is often a social experience. Most visitors come in numbers; couples, tour groups, friends, group of hobbyists, etc.

Another characteristic of the Old

Town experience is the intimacy: close distance between performers, visitors, and even vendors. Everything is on the same level & interactions happen directly

As with many other tourist sites, Kota Tua (and Escompto) become part of a spectacle especially when it preserved in other
