Interview CELEBRITY

JOHN MAYALL In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has included some of the most famous blues and blues rock musicians. They include Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Don “Sugarcane” Harris, Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser, Johnny Almond, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and Buddy Whittington. With over 70 original albums released it’s no wonder he’s known as the godfather of blues in Europe. Mayall is a key figure in contemporary music and a creator of new standards in blues rock. Extensively touring the globe since the 1960s, John recently celebrated his 80th birthday and as a special treat to fans decided to go back on to the road again. Taking in no less than 76 cities on both sides of the 4

Atlantic, he doesn’t do things by small measures! Performing his vibrant and comprehensive review of the blues genre at the Teatro Cervantes, Malaga on March 5th 2014, it will surely be a master class by the godfather himself. What first attracted you to blues? I was always drawn to music as a little kid and when I discovered the blues I felt a connection with my own feelings about life. Did your background in art influence your musical taste? Probably not, although I was able to reflect the music in my artwork. Right from earliest childhood I always thought I would have a career in art but turned out music won the competition. Blues has always seemed to me to be an outlet for many personal experiences in an artist’s life. Do you find this to be true and

John Mayall, OBE (born 29 November 1933) is an English blues singer, guitarist, organist and songwriter, whose musical career spans over fifty years.

I have to say, music is my main focus in life

have you ‘vented’ personal problems in your music? Blues is not limited to personal problems but to everything around us in the world we live in. It is a great outlet for opinions and feelings in all categories of emotion. Apart from music, do you have any other passions in your life? I have to say, music is my main focus in life. You’ve played and recorded with so many artists, do you have a favourite to work with? I always get asked this but to tell you the truth, anyone I’ve chosen to work with has given me great artistic rewards. I think every musician I’ve hired has brought unique qualities to my music. Do you think that turning down The Beatles in 1962 - and missing out on the world’s biggest selling

band - reflected in Decca signing you a few years later? I don’t think there’s any connection at all. Decca signed me originally for a single and a live album that didn’t do well at all. House producer Mike Vernon talked them into reconsidering me after the buzz around the clubs indicated that Eric Clapton and I were getting talked about a lot. What do you think of today’s music? I like the fact that there’s quite a lot of variety although I can’t say I like anything going on in popular rock and pop, plus I think rap music sets us back thirty years or more. What can we expect from your concert in Malaga? With the band I’ve had for the past five years you can expect a lot of hard driving excitement. Rocky Athas is one of the great guitarists

and Greg Rzab on bass with drummer Jay Davenport really rock the house. I imagine most octogenarians would be very envious of you. How do you manage to still tour 76 cities on both sides of the Atlantic? (I’m tired just thinking of it!) The energy comes from the music itself as we work together. The fact that I don’t drink alcohol, have never used drugs and have good family genes, all goes a long way. Can we forsee another tour when you turn 90? I hope I have the good health to still be out there.

Back in the 90s when Britpop was to-

pdog, the BRITs used to be a bit more rugged and unpredictable, but over the past few years the organisers have been making the event slicker and smoother, moving it to the 02 Arena in London and installing James Cordon as a safe pair of presenting ‘funny-at-times’ hands. Now it all seems a bit formal, I’m sure it’s a great atmosphere if you were there in person but that really isn’t coming across on the old tele-box. I would suggest remedying this by having a few clusters of civilian audience members around the stage, like they successfully do at the Grammys, otherwise the whole dinner party vibe which is currently being given off is a bit underwhelming. Thankfully it was James Cordon’s third and final year presenting the BRITs and finally it is time to move on and find someone a bit grittier. I would love to see Russell Brand or Ricky Gervais hosting the event next year. David Bowie capped his surprise musical comeback by winning best British male at the Brit Awards 2014, using the occasion to make an equally unexpected intervention in the Scottish independence debate. At 67, Bowie has the distinction of being the oldest artist ever to receive a Brit. The win came 30 years after he last won the same award. His rivals for best British male – Jake Bugg, James Blake, John Newman and Tom Odell – were not born when Bowie last won in 1984, after a year that produced the hits Let’s Dance and Modern Love. Then, his fellow winners included Culture Club, Spandau Ballet, Paul Young and Prince. Ellie Goulding picked up the Brit award for British female solo artist – despite not having released an album in the past year. The singer and songwriter recently topped the UK album charts with 2012 album Halycon some 65 weeks after its release, making it the first No 1 album of 2014. This year’s award is Goulding’s second. In 2010 she won the critics’ choice award at the Brits, as well as the BBC’s Sound of… poll – this year, soulful singer Sam Smith also received both accolades.

Arctic Monkeys can do no wrong in the eyes of their fans but they’ve caused a stir following their acceptance speech at the ceremony when Alex Turner used it as an opportunity to ramble on about the resurgence of rock n roll with some viewers calling the band “arrogant.”

The ‘R U Mine?’ hitmakers won the coveted British Album award for their fifth LP ‘AM’ and British Group at this year’s ceremony held at London’s O2 Arena but it seems they may have started their celebrating a little too early as Turner appeared to be drunk when they hit the stage to accept the album gong at the end of the night. His bandmates looked a little bewildered at his speech and I was cringing whilst watching it.

WINNERS

BRITISH MALE SOLO ARTIST - David Bowie BRITISH FEMALE SOLO ARTIST - Ellie Goulding BRITISH GROUP - Arctic Monkeys BRITISH BREAKTHROUGH ACT - Bastille BRITISH SINGLE OF THE YEAR - RUDIMENTAL - Waiting All Night CRITICS’ CHOICE - Sam Smith BRITISH GLOBAL SUCCESS - One Direction MASTERCARD BRITISH ALBUM OF THE YEAR - Arctic Monkeys - AM BEST PRODUCER - Flood and Alan Moulder INTERNATIONAL MALE - Bruno Mars INTERNATIONAL FEMALE - Lorde INTERNATIONAL GROUP - Daft Punk BEST VIDEO - One Direction - Best Song Ever

With viewing figures the lowest they have been this century, let’s hope the producers change things up a little for next year’s bash. Bring the fun back to the Brits!

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

a l e t s o p m Co SANTIAGO DE

The capital city of the Galicia region in north western Spain, Santiago de Compostela is famous as the final destination of the traditional pilgrimage known as Camino de Santiago. Also called the Way of St. James, this pilgrimage dates back to Medieval times and is important to many because it is believed that Santiago de Compostela is where St. James, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, is buried. Today, the city attracts thousands of visitors every year for both its religious tradition and history.

10

significance of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage while the Museum of the Galician People showcases the culture and history of the region.

The arriving point for most pilgrims is the main square, Praza do Obradoiro. Situated in the heart of the city, this bustling plaza is the scene of many important landmarks, particularly the Santiago Cathedral where the tomb of St. James is located. Other historic buildings here are Gelmirez Palace, Rajoy Palace, Catholic Kings Hostal and San Jeronimo College.

Trendy shops, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants can be found within the city’s New District, Zona Nova, as well as a variety of pubs and clubs offering a wide range of music genres, dancing and live performances. Local food and drink specialties include boiled octopus and queimada, a brandy concoction mixed with coffee beans and fruits that is set on fire prior to drinking as a tradition of warding off evil spirits. Santiago de Compostela is small enough to walk around although buses and taxis are available.

The Pilgrimage Museum is a good place to learn all about the history and

Santiago de Compostela has a humid oceanic climate, with drier summers.

The prevailing winds from the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains combine to give Santiago some of Spain’s highest rainfall.

DARIELAS CAKES

Sugar craft heaven

What is the concept of your company: A creative pastry workshop, sugarcraft shop, cooking school or a little bit of everything? It’s everything you just mentioned and more. We have workshops that teach many different techniques and in the Sugarcraft shop, you can buy all the tools, materials and ingredients you may need to make all your creations. We also produce cakes for all types of events, weddings, birthdays and any kind of celebrations. How did the idea come about? At first, this kind of baking was a hobby, making decorated cookies and cakes for family and friends. Then I saw my own potential and decided to get involved professionally so I attended a pastry course at the Hotel-School training center in Mijas, other courses around Spain, and at Peggy Porschen academy in London. 12

What sets you apart from other shops? I’m a graduate in early childhood education, so one of the things I most like and enjoy are the workshops with children as I have adapted them especially for children. Also the quality of products, everything I do is with high quality raw material. The store & workshop is very bright and welcoming, and we are also totally adapted for disabled. People also celebrate birthdays at our workshop with a cake personalized for the event, where kids can enjoy the party whilst making pastry creations with all their friends. What kind of courses do you teach? Creative pastry workshops, for both children and adults: cakes, cookies, cupcakes, sugar flowers, amongst many other pastry decoration techniques. We also offer specialized

workshops for jamón serrano or fruit cutting, Sommelier, cocktails, etc. We are soon planning to have international food courses too, such as sushi and Moroccan cuisine. Can you order cakes for weddings, or other special occasions? Yes, we accept orders for any kind of celebration and depending on the event; we have desert and candy tables, all uniquely styled, themed and decorated to perfection.
