URBAN INFILL 2016 @215 W JONES AVE., SAN ANTONIO, T X.

This urban infill project is located adjacent to the world-class collection of the San Antonio Museum of Art. In teams, we were challenged to design three different buildings within a dense site, and to develop a new amenity for the museum as a shared space. We decided to extend the museum’s outreach to a plaza which can be used to display sculptures, and will create a memorable experience for the pedestrians. Each team member had to design one building with different height requirement and different program. In my case, I had the tallest building (limited to 7 floors, and no more than 2 apartment units per floor) with a yogurt shop at the ground floor. My main design goal was to create more social experiences within the program requirements, and to provide good sunlight despite the building’s conflicting orientation.

@DREAMHILL ESTATES NEIGHBORHOOD, SAN ANTONIO, T X.

Dreamhill Estates is a historic neighborhood located in San Antonio, TX. This project purpose was to re-imagine the community’s existing structure to accommodate a new building with a multi-purpose room for different classes, activities and events. The design intent is for it to be flexible, economically efficient and durable.

In order to be economically efficient, the structure design was thought to be lightweight and simple. The multi-purpose room has exposed structure and translucent walls shaded with operable louvers for adaptability. The idea is to use the existing bamboo on site to fabricate all the louvers. Garage doors are located on the short ends of the room to allow for exterior interaction and ventilation. The plan has a central corridor which separates the private and public activities. This allows the private spaces to be kept closed. A rain-catching system is proposed with sloping roofs and a stormwater canal.

SUNDAY HOUSE 2015 @BOTANICAL GARDENS, SAN ANTONIO, T X.

The San Antonio Botanical Garden wants to re-design the existing area of the community garden. The program consists of a “Sunday House that can provide a classroom space, and a small kitchen that would be used to teach families and children about a healthier way of living. The overall design idea for this project is an interactive building that can be innovative, and respecful with the Botanical Garden existing infrastructures. I will achive this through selected materials, and an exciting building form that will save energy and improve the environment.

The proposed design wants to create a learning environment through the integration of sustainable elements that will help to maintain some of the building’s utilities. The form of the roof and the building itself emerged from the idea of integrating the building with its natural envi-

ronment. A sloped green roof was created to collect and direct water back to the land. The proposed system will save energy by irrigating the planting beds with the harvested water using an underground sytem with positive pressure. Inside the building, the floor level increases from the entrance to the back end of the classroom to maximize daylight penetration. The windows are located high on the walls and can be fixed to control natural ventilation.

BUS STATION 2015 @1001 BROADWAY, SAN ANTONIO, T X.

This project is a bus station located in downtown San Antonio. The program consisted of having two terminal services with baggage storage, a waiting area, public restrooms, offices, and a staff break room. It is a two-story building with an outdoor canopy space to receive the buses. The ground floor plan was developed after the concept of directing people to the main areas of San Antonio Downtown, the Tower of the Americas and the Alamo in one direction, and the river walk in another direction. The internal circulation is directed with this concept by locating the main two entries at those end-directions. The abstract shape of the canopy for the outdoor areas has the purpose of inviting people into this new space that wants to socially connect with the adjacent Maverick Park. The general design goal is to make a memorable first impression of the city.

KAYAK CENTER 2013 @MISSION ESPADA, SAN ANTONIO, T X.

Mission Espada is one of the three preserved missions that form The San Antonio Missions National Historic Park in Texas. This project consisted in the design of a Kayak Center which program required a reception area for kayak rentals, a Sports Cafe and an outdoor pavilion. The design concept emerged with the idea of the growth of a flower opening up for the people to enjoy its beauty. It evolved into two separate structures that together with the pavilion, opens a view to the San Antonio River ready to invite people to the kayaking experience.

The building design is divided in two triangular masses representing the city’s different cultural growth on the north and the south. Part of the concept intention is to create an expressionist archietcture that can inspire students and attract the community. The materials and terraces are intended to create views and connections with the Historic Pearl and Downtown Broadway Areas.

Design Architect: Meg Jorn Client: The Marine Military Academy Project Phase: Schematic Design Renderings: Karla Astudillo Site Plan Draft: Karla Astudillo The Architect’s intent is to have a simple building structure with a facade that could symbolize the strong profile of marines. We also wanted to harmonize views and material finishes with the Iwo Jima Memorial located at the site. We planned to incorporate the navy-blue granite used on the Iwo Jima monument for some exterior walls; that can be also used for memoriam inscriptions. The front facade is composed by a tall and long porch with an exihibit of massive columns. The porch provides nice outdoor gathering space and shade for a storefront glazing that has an amazing view to the memorial.

1958 PROPOSED SITE PLAN

Architect: Interiors - Meg Jorn; Exterior - John Percy Client: Cameron County Project Phase: Finished Project I worked alongside with the Architect Meg Jorn on all the interior design renovations of this project. From the early stage of schematic design to the finished construction and furnishings. I produced most of the final Construction Documents for the Interior Renovations, and assisted on selecting interior finishes palette. I was also in charge of coordinating and keeping the Consultants on the loop during design production and construction administration. The gray-carrera marble panels from 1958 on the exterior facade started to fall-off the building due to its aged attachment system that was unable to support the heavy weight of the panels. On its place, Aluminum Composite Panels were installed as part of our renovation project. Architect Meg Jorn decided to reuse and salvage the exterior marble panels on some interior rooms. We also salvaged most of the original wood doors and the original green marble at counters and columns. The mayor challenge of this project was the tight schedule for construction. This required a lot of communication and weekly meetings on site with the Contractor, the Owner, and our Design Team. We were very proud for being able to finish on time for the period of 6 months for construction.

Photo on the right shows the marble panels being reused for lavatory counters and wet walls. By reusing the exterior marble panels on the interior, we were able to tell a story and to maintain the original essence of the building. They were also used on all the Courtrooms as the center piece for the Judge’s bench. Through the project, we also salvaged most of the original wood doors and green marble at the transaction counters and columns. A nice palette of accent paint colors and flooring textures was chosen to brighten and harmonize the new additions and the existing finishes. LED retrofits and new light fixtures played an important role for the finished interior apperance.

CENTER FOR INNOVATION & COMMERCIALIZATION 2018 @307 RAILROAD ST., WESLACO, T X.

Architect: Meg Jorn; Chris Sias Client: The EDC of Weslaco; funded by The U.S. Economic Development Administration Tenant: The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Project Phase: Finished Project This federal funded project is a renovation of what used to be an empty shell part of the City Hall and the EDC of Weslaco building. The vision started for a Center of Innovation and Bussiness Incubator; proposed by the NSF I-coprs of UTRGV to the EDC of Weslaco. But when both the City of Weslaco and UTRGV envisioned the potential that this project could be, they decided to increase the project’s vision to accomodate the Ph.D. of Business program and 3 extra classrooms as a start for the University’s vision of having a new Campus in Weslaco. I participated in most of the client meetings from schematic design with Architect Meg Jorn to design development and construction administration with Architect Chris Sias . My tasks were producing construction plans and renderings, as well as administrative work through all stages of the project. I was part on the decisions for building finishes and furnishing selections on both the interior and the exterior of the building. As project administrator and part-manager during construction, I was the main point of contact for the Consultants and the Contractor. Architect Meg Jorn couldn’t live to see the project finished, but we know for sure that she is proud in heaven. She was able to finalize the floor plans and most of the exterior design. All finishes and progress modifications from Design
