congratulations on being accepted to the ucla anderson mba program. As you consider your next step, ask yourself, “What gives someone an edge in today’s global marketplace?” We believe it’s the ability to “think in the next.” This means seeing possibility in every challenge. And if the challenge is daunting, then it’s all the more interesting. It also means remodeling business models for future success. Or figuring out how to be sustainable yet profitable. How to rebuild the overall economy, and use shared knowledge for the greater good. It’s all about understanding the now, but thinking in the next. / / / / / Being in the right MBA program at the right time isn’t luck, it’s a choice. a market-facing curriculum that prepares you for maximum career impact. Employers expect MBA graduates to be ready — from day one — to add value to their organizations. When you decide to pursue your MBA at UCLA Anderson, you are supported by a curriculum that puts you in charge of your learning experience; gives you the classes you need when you need them; gives you the deep preparation you need for your chosen career; and directly ties your academic experience to the current global marketplace.

01 academic experience is built around four key components. As a first-year MBA, you will start by building crucial leadership and communication skills delivered via two separate classes in leadership and communication — each led by thought leaders in their fields. Second, we allow you to customize the sequencing of your core classes so that your academic experience is aligned with your career goals. You can choose when to take Marketing, Finance and Strategy in the first year, which will ensure that you accelerate your learning in the field that most interests you. Third, we help you build depth of expertise in your chosen industry or function through the pursuit of tracks and specializations. And fourth, we put the finishing touches on your academic preparation with the Applied Management Research (AMR) program — where you can serve as a strategic consultant to a major company in the U.S. or abroad, address organizational and competitive challenges, and provide recommendations for action.

year 1: A focus on Leadership, communication and a customized core experience

Leadership Foundations // This unique, five-day, mandatory two-unit course is designed to enhance knowledge of and competency in leadership. The course offers different perspectives on leadership, emphasizing the development of skills that support effective leadership. The combination of readings, lectures, cases, experiential exercises and class discussion allows entering MBA students to determine their own leadership strengths and limitations, and to develop a plan for improving their strengths and overcoming their limitations. Management Communication // The Management Communication Program is designed to help students strengthen the relationship between their analytical and communication skills. The program’s components complement work done in selected core and elective courses and in the Applied Management Research (AMR) project. The first component is a four-unit

class taken in the first two quarters of the program, aimed at improving students’ verbal and presentation skills. The second component is part of the AMR project and includes communication workshops and coaching to improve the quality of written and verbal communications. The third component is an advanced elective for students who would like to raise their communication skills to an even higher level. Customized Core Sequencing // Customized core sequencing is designed to prepare you for internship interviews, which get into full swing at the start of the winter quarter. In the fall quarter, all students take accounting, statistics and economics to build a firm quantitative foundation, but then choose between marketing and finance. If you’re aiming for a career in marketing or consulting, enrolling in the fall marketing class will probably be the best way to prepare for the case-based interviews commonly used in these fields. Alternatively, if you’re aiming for a more quantitatively-oriented career, the finance class will give you the knowledge and skills you need to impress in the interview room.

During the winter quarter, you’ll pick up whichever of the two classes you did not take in the fall. You’ll then have the option to take the core strategy course or pursue an elective course of your choosing. For some students, such as aspiring consultants, it makes sense to prepare for internships by taking strategy earlier in the year. If you intend to take the finance or marketing track, then there are elective offerings that will help you get off to a strong start. Learning Style // Core classes meet for approximately 1.5 hours, twice weekly. Most courses include a midterm and final exam or project, and many classes incorporate levels of group work within the curriculum. In the first year of the program, students are placed in a cohort section and take required core courses with their section. Learning teams of five students with diverse backgrounds are assigned for core courses. Learning teams are used for case analysis and write-ups, experiential exercises, presentations and other exercises.

Q&A with professor rakesh sarin You started with the UCLA Anderson faculty in 1979. What’s kept you engaged so long? Every day I come to work, I am amazed at how collegial and helpful my peers and cohorts are. This is a delightful place to work. In my tenure, the faculty has always been the school’s greatest asset. There is no secret why. Its hirings are all world-class. The faculty is obsessed — and I mean that in a good way — with uncovering new knowledge and passing it on to their students. There is no default button here for “business as usual.”

In my 30 years at UCLA Anderson much has changed. But the constant is this: Do whatever is best for the students. We work at one of the world’s greatest research universities. Yet, as much as our faculty is dedicated to research, its first love is teaching. I have attended many of our young professors’ classes and am transfixed by how knowledgeable, articulate and inspiring they are. What is the key benefit of a UCLA Anderson MBA? Our approach is to give students a deep foundational understanding of business, organizations and functions. To prepare them on an array of levels. That way, our graduates can take up challenges as they arise. Personally, I also try to give students a longer view of life — to show that their personal well-being is key to any success they may have. When you are emotionally secure, you are more productive and contribute more on all levels. How would you persuade a student to come here? I would say this is a place where you can truly become the best version of yourself. That the amount of fresh, original thinking that will come from your professors, peers and you is staggering. This is a high-energy environment that encourages collaboration as something that’s integral to individual success. From here, you can reach out to do good for society, as well as for yourself.

“ There is no default button here for ‘ business as usual.’”

The possibilities for sports marketing in Los Angeles are unlimited. With my Anderson background, I’m setting my goals high. I plan to become a marketing manager for a professional sports team or league, or a marketing consultant with an agency.”

Anderson has a strong global focus, unparalleled flexibility in its curriculum and an alumni network that is growing at an incredible speed internationally. Besides, Anderson has consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in the world and its reputation as a leading center for learning and research increases every year. It is a very interesting, exciting and challenging place! How did UCLA Anderson support you as an international student? The admissions team put me in touch with other present and past Anderson students with similar backgrounds, so I felt at home right from the beginning. In addition, attendance to the International Student Organization Days (ISOD) was instrumental to learn useful hindsight on a variety of important issues confronting overseas students. Finally, the University Apartments office provided all kinds of information concerning housing opportunities, which helped me meet my specific needs and preferences.

AN Alumni network as international as it is successful and responsive. As a student at UCLA Anderson, you’ll begin an enriching relationship with a successful, worldwide alumni community that numbers 35,000.

Support is lifelong and worldwide. UCLA Anderson alumni support students and each other in all 50 states and a vast number of countries around the world. Alumni expand their social and business networks by participating in regional, industry-focused and diverse alumni chapter events.

q&a with alumnus bill gross // class of 1971 Bringing out the ‘inner entrepreneur’ to lead within organizations or start the next Apple, Facebook or Google has always been a strength of Anderson. We find a way or make one.” bill gross / / mba ’71

// CO-founder & co-chief investment officer // pacific investment management company (pimco) newport beach, ca

In 1971, Bill Gross (‘71) founded PIMCO, launching with $12 million in assets. Today the firm manages the world’s largest fund and now oversees more than $2 trillion in assets. Talk about your time at UCLA Anderson.

I graduated in 1971. In those days, Wall Street was still a kind of cottage industry. The high that year was 950. My classes here were routinely innovative. When I launched PIMCO, my education had really prepared me.

Talk about “thinking in the next.” Unraveling the financial future is absolutely critical for the U.S. and global economies. We face huge challenges. Technology is great at profit creation, but it hasn’t produced many jobs here. We’ll need to look to manufacturing here as a way to stimulate growth. What about the level of opportunity in the current global economy? There will always be a place in business for bright people with bright ideas. That’s a real strength of UCLA Anderson. And with more and more focus on international exposure, the school is preparing MBA students to start here but work anywhere.

THE WAYS AND MEANS TO PAY FOR YOUR MBA

20

Merit Fellowships // Fellowships are awarded based on an assessment of your academic profile, the strength of your admissions application, your educational and life experiences and your personal interests. Fellowships are awarded in a range of amounts to both domestic and international admits. Need-Based Grants // Need-based grants are offered to domestic and international students who demonstrate financial need. U.S. citizens and permanent residents must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). International students must complete the UCLA Anderson International Aid application.

Donor Fellowships // Through the generosity of corporate, individual, alumni and foundation donors, awards are offered to exceptional MBA students. We award more than $1.3 million in Donor Fellowships based on donor-specific criteria such as target industries and career interest. Teaching Assistantships // Serving as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA) is a great way to increase your financing options. Approximately 20% of our second-year students serve as TAs or RAs in the full-time MBA program. By becoming a TA or RA, you could be eligible for reduced tuition, salary (up to $27/hour), as well as reduced health insurance costs. See the Graduate Division’s website at www.gdnet.ucla.edu. Veterans // UCLA Anderson participates in the Yellow Ribbon matching program for out-of-state veterans under the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. Once you receive your certificate of eligibility from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (www. va.gov) , contact the UCLA Anderson Financial Aid Office for more information. If you are an in-state student, contact the UCLA Veteran’s Affairs Office at www.veterans.ucla.edu.

(U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents and

Unsubsidized Direct Loans are available to students regardless of need. Interest (6.8% fixed) accrues from the time of disbursement. The maximum loan amount is $20,500 per year.

International Students)

Graduate Direct PLUS Loans are available to credit-worthy individuals. Interest (7.9% fixed) accrues from the time of disbursement. The maximum amount you may borrow per year equals the cost of education minus all other financial aid awards. Repayment on all Federal Direct Loans begins six months after you leave school or graduate. Repayment terms range from 10 to 30 years depending on total debt. Options for income-based repayment, deferment and forbearance are available to borrowers. Students who are enrolled in school at least half time qualify for deferment of monthly student loans currently in repayment.

Private Loans are offered by lenders. Eligibility for private loans depends on the borrower’s credit score. Private loans typically have variable interest rates based on LIBOR or PRIME. Many lenders offer lower interest rates to borrowers with cosigners with good credit scores. Students can borrow up to the cost of education minus other financial aid. International students without a U.S. cosigner can borrow the Eli Lilly Federal Credit Union Loan. For more details, consult the financial aid section of the admit portal. Outside Fellowships // Fellowships from outside the school are available from many sources — companies, churches, civic groups and other organizations that fund education. Securing a fellowship from an outside source can be a long process, so we encourage you to apply early. For fellowship resources, visit the admit portal.

Why B-school? After six years in advertising, I realized my interests were moving toward marketing and tech. I knew an MBA would help with my transition to marketing by accelerating development of my skills while I built my professional network. Why UCLA Anderson? The convergence of technology, media and entertainment is gaining momentum in Los Angeles like nowhere else. When I was accepted to

Anderson, the admissions committee, faculty, students and alumni all made me feel like part of the family. No other school could compete with that. How is UCLA Anderson helping prepare you for your post-MBA career? I took a leadership position with the High Tech Business Association, and I’m also a member of the Marketing Association, African American Students in Management and the Japan America Business Association. Being involved with these organizations is a great gateway to career opportunities, and they are a phenomenal complement to the services of the Parker CMC.
