The spare change that changed America In the winter of 1784, Spain lost a shipload of spare change that would have saved their colonial North American empire. The El Cazador was a brigantine of war, loaded with coins from the Mexico City mint, bound for the port of New Orleans. The precious cargo was desperately needed by the Spanish to help stabilize the money system in their Louisiana territory. When it disappeared, Spain was left no choice but to sell to the French. Play it again Sami Walk the streets of Casablanca on a cool Moroccan evening and you can’t help but whistle “the tune.” Few songs fit the city more perfectly than “As Time Goes By.” The old hotels and nightclubs still cut the same skyline as they did in the 1940s and palm trees still tower over the Boulevard de la Corniche. The 1945 Léman Timepiece is inspired by a classic from the most famous of vintage Swiss watchmakers. This watch only looks 100 years old
There are only a handful of truly pivotal events in the history of watch making. In 1656, the pendulum clock was invented. The world’s first tourbillon appeared in 1795. The mechanical stopwatch was patented in 1930. And in 2012, Stauer created the Opus Timepiece. This watch deserves a place in the legacy of timekeeping legends because it was directly inspired by them. After years of searching auctions and private sales, I dreamed of the ideal vintage watch. Everything I found came close, but nothing was perfect. That’s when I decided to stop looking and start working. One day, he was strolling the bombed-out streets of Palermo in dusty olive drab. Months later, he’s headed uptown in a grey flannel suit.
