2008 Site: Borough Market
Borough market is a specialist food wholesale and retail market. It is London’s oldest food market, occupying its present site for nearly 250 years. Over 160 traders come to Borough every week from all over the British Isles and farther afield to supply 4.8 million customers per year with high quality produce. Thursdays: 11am - 5pm Fridays: 12pm - 6pm Saturdays: 9am - 4pm

The Proposal
I based my site research on the market’s main features and characteristics that have contributed to its vast popularity through the years. A thorough on-site study has been undertaken along with research on other popular markets around the world such as the Syrian and Turkish markets. For my final proposal, I have replaced yet kept the market’s general authentic style by adding functional organizational features. The redesign basically consists of a market ‘face-lift’

Target Area of the Design Proposal
There are two main areas in the market: 1. The Middle Road Market, which is our target area. It provides mostly immobile stalls. 2. The Green Market which offers mobile stalls is also used as parking space on nonmarket days, hence, high flexibility is a main requirement.

Design Scheme
1. The Middle Road Market All existing caging is to be removed and a change in the layout of the existing electricity outlets & storage spaces will take place. Concrete panels are also to be placed giving the market an easy to follow route. Those panels will also serve as utility outlets, space dividers and canvases for graffiti artists. 2. The Green Market Wooden stalls will be introduced here as a ‘product’. Traders have the choice of keeping their existing stalls or replacing them with our new, suitable and more efficient designs.

The chosen materials are timber and concrete which two main qualities: minimalism and durability. For the timber stalls, basic mechanisms have been used in order to preserve the rustic feel and simplicity which the market is known by. Concrete is a durable material, it has the ability to last a long time without significant deterioration. Durable materials help the environment by conserving resources and reducing wastes and environmental impacts of repair and replacement. I chose to keep the raw look and color of concrete because it indicates strength and stability. It also provides the traders with a good medium to hang their own signs and banners on.

The stalls operate on a very basic mechanism as it was the manual and technologyfree approach I was after, a simple “open/close” concept. This flexible “open/close” mechanism also contributes to the privacy that each trader gets to enjoy, which offers flexible control over their private/public space. This is the ‘basic’ design of the stall, however, customized stalls are provided upon request to suit all needs. More compartments can be added as well as more shelving. Space for trader-customer interaction

• Display tables are packed inside the stall and can be taken out and placed when needed, they are fastened using an easy basic mechanism. • Shelves can be added onto the doors when ordering the stall, as each stall is customizable according to each trader’s needs. • Locked using a very basic, simple and efficient pad lock. • Stalls are kept in specified storage areas around the sides of the market. • Stall doors open and close using metal hinges. • Sturdy wheels facilitate the movement and storage of the stalls.

Graffiti has been known to the public as vandalism and a symbol of rebellion, however, with time, it became one of the most popular types of art, a creative way for people to speak out and publicly express their thoughts. The concrete panels are an open invitation for the public to express their creativity in a controlled manner. Most of the panel is covered with anti-graffiti coating, leaving the backside uncoated to be left for the art, this creates the ‘controlled chaos’ I am after.

Concrete Panels
1. Landmarks and utility outlets for the stalls. 2. They create a pathway thought the market, providing direction and a sense of ‘journey’. 3. They provide a double function as ‘canvases’ where visitors can leave their marks and express their thoughts about the market (on market days), and for graffiti artists to express their art (when the market is shut). They are strategically placed to create an exhibition area that can be enjoyed and visited at any time.

2007 Site: Angel Meadow Park, Oxford, UK
The brief for this project was to choose a favorite artist and to design a space that caters to him and his work. The space needed to provide the artist with, home, office and display/exhibition areas. Detailed functions for the overall space was left up to the students depending on their chosen artist, in my case i chose the legendary Lebanese dress maker, Elie Saab.

2006 Daniel Libeskind Little Universe, 1979 FreeHand Drawing / Imitation
The brief for this project was to choose an architect and to pick out an art piece done by them then to basically recreate it. I chose Daniel Liebskind and his drawing “Little Universe” which is a part of a long series of drawings (Edition no. 24-30) of similar style. Medium: Silk screen on paper 65 X 90 cm “The invention of perspective enabled painters and architects to recreate their surroundings in a natural but scientific way by geometrical means, finding a mathematical logic in everything.” -Unknown I was particularly drawn to this because of its complexity within the simplicity. Pretty much like architecture, start with a concept , a line, another line ending up in pages full of drawings that make sense (if intended to, unlike is this one) and which can lead to the creation of real life functional architecture.
