February 7th 2014 Hello again friends! Today our artist Ms. Molly showed us a picture of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. We have never seen a building like it and have a lot of questions! What materials is the building made of? How often do you go to the museum? How do you get there? We noticed it’s surrounded by water —do you have to swim or take a boat? What type of art is in the museum? We would like to tell you more about the project we are working on. After our community walk, Ms. Molly showed us an artwork called “Asterisms” by Gabriel Orozco. Gabriel collected objects from an island in Mexico and arranged them at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. We talked about how objects tell us something about the people and place they are from. Then we made a list of all things we see in our neighborhood and each of us picked one object to make as a sculpture. Some of the objects we are making are a broken bottle, a penny, and a winter glove. We started making our objects by drawing them and deciding how big or small we wanted to make them. After we finished our plans, we made skeletons for our objects using recycled things like cardboard tubes, empty egg cartons and yogurt containers. Even though we are each making a different sculpture, when we put them together they are a collection, just like Gabriel Orozco’s artwork! Here is one of Gabriel Orozco’s photographs that Ms. Molly showed us, and a photograph of some of us making skeletons for our objects. What projects are you working on? Talk to you soon!
