January 31st, 2014 Hello! We are Ms. Sach’s 4th grade at PS 86 in the Bronx. The Bronx is a borough of New York City and a borough is an area. In New York City there are 5 areas: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. We are 24 students in the same class but we are from 9 different counties and we speak 6 different languages! We are from the United States, Bangladesh, Ghana, Pakistan, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Mexico and Gabōn. The languages we speak are English, Spanish, French, Bengali, Ga and Urdu, but in school we mostly speak English. What countries are you from? What languages do you speak? This year our artist is Molly O’Brien and she is teaching us about community. The communities we are learning about are our classroom, our school, the Bronx and now your community! To learn more about the Bronx we took a walk around our school neighborhood. Ms. Molly is teaching us that artists look at the world differently and notice things that other people don’t. As artists we saw many interesting things, like restaurants, houses, birds, trees, leaves, graffiti, school buses, cars and so much more! What do you see in the community around your school? What is your artist teaching you? Here is a photograph of our class at the Guggenheim Museum and a photograph of our community walk. Did you know that photograph means “drawing with light”? Write back soon!
