Protective Hairstyles

Protective Hairstyles, as the name suggests, are wore to, most importantly, protect the hair and at the same time, give it time to rest.

Protective hairstyles help to decrease the amount of tension and damage that are usually apply on the hair on a daily basis, such as detangling, flat ironing, etc.

They are advantageous to natural kinky hair because they give the hair time to grow in peace.

There are a variety of protective styles, but in this volume of the magzine, the focus will be on Box Braids, Faux Locs, and Faux Bun,

I, myself, have been natural for almost three years now. I big chopped* my very first semester of college.

The transition from having hair, to an almost bald head is quite hard.

Most of the time, we are clueless of what to do with our twa** In the many articles in this magazine, I will try to help and guide those of you who need help, just like I needed help at the beginning of my “Kinky Coils� journey

Box Braids

Boxing braids are one of the most worn and cheap Protective styles. It is made of multiple french braids done on the hair, using Kanekalon Hair.

Some people wear them for one to two weeks, while other wear them for more than a month. It is an easy to acheive type of hairstyle. However, it not recommended to wear it for more than 2 months as it may become dammaging for the hair.

Faux Locs

Faux Locs, one of my favorite, can be the most expensive or the cheapest of the list, depending on the type of hair used* Faux Locs, as again, the name suggests, ressemble the real dread locs.

They have the ability to be worn for the longest, because the hold is really strong.

However, if done wrong, or too tight/ too close to your roots and edges, it may break your hair

Faux Buns are more of fancy hairstyle. They are not as protective as the two other hairstyles discussed previously.

Faux buns can be high or low.

Most of the time, naturalista with a twa use kanekalon or marley hair (depending on their hair texture) to acheive the look.

Also, naturalista with longer hair do not really need the fake hair in order for them to make a low or high bun, but they use it to add volume to their hair.

Unfortunately, faux buns do not last as long as faux locs and boxing braids. They can go up to a High Faux Bun with Marley Hair month if they are well taken care of

There are many other brands of kanekalon hair Also, keep in mind tha this same type of hair can also be used for the faux bun As long as it matches your natural hair pattern. They usually sell 3 for $5

Let’s talk about protecting your hair with the LOC Method The LOC Method The LOC Method stands for: Liquid (water based leave in), Oil (to seal in the moisture) and Cream (a gel or a styling cream).

The Leave in may be used on a daily basis, or every other day as it adds moisture to your hair. The Oil is a seal in. It does not add any moisture, as it isn’t waster based (DUH!) but it seals in the moisture. So the hair can remained moisturized for a longer period of time. The Styling Cream or/ and gel, are used for syling. These should not be used on a daily basis, as they can damage the hair.

Hair Regimen

Also, it is not required to wash your hair every week *SAY WHAT?!* The shampoo has the ability to dry off your hair, at the same time it’s removing dirt, it is also getting rid of your natural oil So on a bright side, you can co-wash.

Co-wash will not clean your hair as good as the shamppo would have. But it will get rid of the major residues Therefore, depending on your daily lifestyle and the amount of product you use, it is recommended to wash your hair every two or three weeks.

Myth:

My Natural Hair will not suit me

Chances are, if you were born with it and it grows out of your scalp, it will suit you.

Taking care of natual hair demands time, patience, and above all LOVE. You must LOVE your hair to take very good care of it.

Look/Search for hairstyles that will fit you.

Most importantly, know your hair texture.

Is your hair a type 3 or a type 4? Is your hair an a, b, or c.

Google and youtube will be your bestfriends during your hair journey, as these two sites contain many tutorials and advices coming from naturalistas.

Moreover, be very careful when whatching youtube tutorials. Learn from someone who has the same/similar hair texture as you.
