The township of Hamilton in south-western Victoria is the largest town in the Southern Grampians region. With the rise of architecturally significant regional galleries, the Hamilton Gallery, along with the Southern Grampians Shire Council and various community stakeholders, is undertaking a master planning and scoping study for the New Hamilton Gallery (NHG) project. The NHG is envisioned as a ‘new world-class gallery for the Southern Grampians Region’ aiming to revitalise the township and attract new tourists markets by creating a destination cultural arts precinct integrated with civic amenities. The NHG provides an opportunity to create a new point of interest in Hamilton and, at its core, celebrates architecture which has the potential to be fascinating, tactile, adaptable and transformative. Through a creative response to place and landscape, NHG will investigate the role of architecture in acting as key anchor for the revitalisation of Hamilton and the surrounding region.

Hamilton is a major centre located in the south-west of Victoria, which in the federal Division of Wannon, and is the largest town in the Southern Grampians region. The town is at the intersection of the Glenelg Highway and the Henty Highway. The Hamilton Highway connects it to Geelong, and also on the railway line to Portland. And is easily accessible to the Great Ocean Road, Coonawarra Wine Region, and the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park The town also with highly diverse landscape resources, Grange Burn run though the town, Lake Hamilton is located at the eastern end of town and is surrounded by parkland. The fertile soil of the region also brings out more possibilities for land use, for example, available for plantation, cereals, pasture...

When I focus on the four different parameters ( Site, topography, networks, landscape) and understand the site, its can found that the town is located on a volcanic basalt plain in a broad and deep valley formed by Grange Burn, a tributary of the Wannon River which winds through the city to Lake Hamilton. Hamilton also has diverse natural environment , and offers a number of attractive parks, gardens and recreation areas. such as Botanical Gardens feature a significant collection of pine and oak trees. The Community Parklands, located at the northern end of town, are an important recreation and conservation asset and includes lots of native wildflowers. The richness of the surrounding land which was also used for farming, grazing, manufacturing. For road networks, main infrastructure lines(highway and railway ) making the area of hamilton accessible and connecting it to its surrounding.

Zoom in to the site, the site is located in the center of the hamilton, which is opposite to the Melville Oval, and surrounded by Lonsdale st,Thompson Street, Gray Street and Brown Street. The site features attractive tree-lined streets,

small shops, and impressive

churches. the Hamilton Gallery is also included in the site, Darker colors represent buildings that can be retained or demolished, --shops, Hailmton Gallery and Church, which will be considered in the future design. In addition, 4 existing access points from different street are marked on the site plan. , and it can be seen that there are many existing parking lot within the site.

Related to the previous site plan, the streetscape elevation of four access point in different street better shows the details of existing conditions. The big entrance to Lonsdale Street is open to traffic and pedestrian as it is close to IGA. The Entrance to Brown Street, where Church is located, is also open to both pedestrians and traffic , there also offers plenty of parking lot. The Gary Street entrance is pedestrian only and requires a permit, while Thompson Street is pedestrian passable.

Minor Project 1 - Feedback [in-class] [2022/1/10]

Simona / Dayne: look at the existing site and save some of the learnings from analysis of different landscape, or different uses of landscape might form part of design. building or gallery could be about gardens, could be about open space, open community, natural reserves, there's lots of things. so really take a landscape focus as well.

Minor Project 1 - Feedback [final presentation] [2022/1/12]

Vicky: entry point- from wide space to narrow space - will create different atmosphere

Simona / Dayne: entry point -they're all converge or there's an intersecting point the different types of entry, about atmosphere. what is the atmosphere of entrance and how does that signify entry into this building? the most straightforward thing to look at would be is there a center or is there a heart of Hamilton? what is that heart? Is it a building? Is it a public space?is an open space? start thinking about the design of your gallery and Civic Square and all that other spaces around it for master planning strategy.

The Heart of Hamilton “ The heart of Hamilton beats with nature, with culture, with civic memory.”

The New Hamilton Civic Centre is a cultural and artistic highland, combining the functions of “urban park” and “cultural square”, bringing a new type of experience space to Hamilton. It can be used as a daily leisure space as well as a venue for activities of different sizes. New Hamilton gallery, existing buildings, redefined transition space, native garden, and multipurpose civic square constitute the town’s living room for the local community and visitors, invigorating the town constantly. Focuses on the existing buildings and access conditions, the intervention proposes a set of grids based on the current entry points. Break and manipulate; the geometry blocks are arranged according to the existing topographic conditions and set up for different functions and activities to enhance spatial experiences. The new hamilton gallery, located in the centre of the grid, is a vibrant social hub that becomes a symbol of the town’s cultural diversity and belongs to the community, the town, and nature. The project also aims to merge the architecture with its surroundings and landscape to facilitate the memory of the town’s history with the natural resources. By blending nature and art into the culture, promotes the creation of new memory and experience of Hamilton. Thus, it serves as a node to revitalize Hamilton on the basis of sustainability and balance.

CONCEPT - 2022/1/14 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

The special location of the site has determined that it is the heart of the Hamilton, because the project aim to integrate the new civic center into the daily life of local community and the travel routes of visitors. Therefore, the existing attractions and community center are marked on the plan, and try to re-link the affected area with the site, to form the new civic life circle. This might enlivened the community around new civic Square and attracted all kinds of visitors..

DIAGRAM - 2022/1/15 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

As i put my Focuses on the existing buildings and access conditions, the intervention proposes a set of grid based on main existing entry points at first. The old gallery and performing centre were identified as the retained buildings, and also leaving areas to be set back for the IGA and the southern buildings. Placed geometry blocks with different function in sequence according to the existing conditions. Break and manipulate, insert the road networks, and add green space, courtyard as transition space between different blocks. The main purporse of the proposal is to create a pedestrian friendly site.

SITE PLAN DRAFT - 2022/1/15 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

SITE PLAN DRAFT - 2022/1/16 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

A key concept of the project is to integrate the site appropriately and harmoniously with its surroundings, so the placement of the building’s functions is closely related to the existing building typologies. A multipurpose Civic sqaure located on the londale st, incoppertae with the opposite oval to enrich the civic life; cafe and retails near the square to provide a place for people to rest and chat. The church will be redefined as the information center as it near the main entry point. NHG, located in the center of the site, connecting with old gallery and performing center, become symbol of diverse culture of Hamilton, A scenic corridor (The viewing gallery) connects the new gallery and the artist workshop, and its inclined Angle allows for better views of the Civic Square and the Oval. The artist’s residence extends from the existing hotel on gray st, and is surrounded by a native garden.

SITE PLAN DRAFT - 2022/1/16 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

ORIGINAL CONTOUR - 2022/1/17 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

The changing level of the new proposed landscape still contain a similar fall- 5 meters with the original landscape. Steps and forecourt are added on the site , to acts as transition things between different buildings at different leveling.  Draw the sections from two directions helps to better understand the leveling conditions of the site.

ISOMETRIC - 2022/1/18 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

Minor Project 2 - Feedback [in-class] [2022/1/17] spatial diagram /Relationship Diagram and then creating an interesting forecourt between the two. how the new gallery reframes or deals with this existing building that’s been there for the last 50 years How to make that a bit of building work better in conjunction with all these new buildings and this new wing design, which is a really strong project, because it’s very aspirational. It’s not just a brand new gallery on the site, but it connects with everying, or thinks about this building and how that currently works. interface with IGA, opening up to the back of the IGA that really needs a bit more consideration. Build 3d model to have an understanding of the contours and how the forms kind of sit on that and what kind of connections are going to draw between,

SITE MODEL (in-progress) - 2022/1/19 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

Minor Project 2 - Feedback [final presentation] [2022/1/19]

Simona / Dayne: The integration of built form in relation to the existing buildings. nice use of an artist residence adjacent to a library. questioning whether the curved wall that faces to courtyard, community garden was the right decision? because it'll eventually overshadow that community garden and sort of opening up to the back of the house. And the orientation of that is to the IGA. But with some careful screening, OR sort of opening up to pick up that Eastern elevation , there'll get some really nice light in there . organization is working well- civic space, that would be a great space. before a cricket match or a football match at Melville oval, people could go and sit there and have had a pie from the bakery, have a drink, have a cup of coffee, have the gallery behind.

Simona / Dayne: great to start seeing the development of the project in section continue to refine whether these forms overlap, whether they intersect and how that kind of materializes in terms of plan as well as start getting into the details of the floor plans. help to make some really kind of informed decisions about the site levels as well, which can continue to explore. useful seeing it in 3d in isometric view build the existing context and the detail because that will give the proposal so much more meaning later on this semester fill the oval, really helps to ground the project.

GF PLAN DRAFT - 2022 /1/21 , BY: WENJING (KARRIN) LI

Imagine taking a journey for new heart of hamilton. If walk, we can enter directly from any laneway, of course we can choose to enter from Brown St, the largest pedestrianentrance, or visit our new centre before heading to the Oval for the match. When we enter, we can get some food in the backery and cafe, sit in the square and watch the match of Oval on the opposite . Then we go to information center , get a map and start our tour of new gallery. Entered the gallery, bought tickets and deposited bags, temporary sculpture exhibition in the foyer . The staff entered the private office area through the small door here. As we continue on, we can choose to take the elevator to the multipurpose room on the first floor, or continue on through a small courtyard to the main exhibition area, where curved glass walls guide us to explore the space, the activity room ,and the open space at the end of the corridor where temporary exhibitions are being held. Hamilton’s story plays in the fixed exhibit. When we came out , we were greeted by a garden full of native vegetation and even could hear the sound of water nearby. We felt the nature of Hamilton and then chose to enter the artist’s studio to learn the local handicraft culture.
