WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial Space is space viewed from a distance and it cannot be entered or circulated through according to Le Corbusier. Due to it is limited to a specific perspective, the object will ultimately be resigned to frontality.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings is attributed to the pure extension and the constellation of objects wedge together in that insistent continuity of edges that the Purists called “mariage de contour”. These two properties are pitted against the use of black and texture. The omission of black and the lack of contrast in Le Corbusier’s paintings results in a sense of continuity in his paintings.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIX PROJECTION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) A Pictorial space is the space limits to a single point of view, therefore allowing the vanishing point extended to infinity and creating realistic scenes. Which means it is more flexible and less precise in lengths and angles. However, Projection provides the full capacity of objects and more precise dimensional view using parallel lines without distorting the perspective.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) A xonometric projection first arises in the twentieth century, avant-garde artists wanted to go beyond the artists’ traditional role of interpreting the world to imagine an art capable of constructing new worlds. Axonometric projection becomes an ideal tool to delineate this new world. Due to its ability to transmit the abstract information and measurable and precise nature.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD This Mario World is a landscape with a limited colour palette. It incorporates small green plantations as decorations, which is set in front of the cylinder trees with the circular pattern, and these trees create a sense of distance by arranging in different heights and orders. Everything behind the tree is ambiguous and blurred. This suggests there can be a certain space between two worlds, so I put a rampart between them. Because the main colour tone of the world is green, in order to avoid the colour blended up, a bright aquamarine river is added to connect with the rampart and going down to the underground as a waterfall. A block of the cloud is floating in the sky, and it conceals a part of the highest tree, Hence I add a castle with a veranda on the top, which recalls the brick block showing in the second world. In the first world, a tube in the water is shown. I extend it to the underground and connect it with a cage to create more storytelling and enrich the overall effect.
