INTRODUCTION TO TACTICAL URBANISM
Street for people competition, Tiruchirappalli Site A: Karur By-pass link road Flagship pilot site.
"Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper," - Eric Reynolds ‘‘An approach to neighbourhood building and activation using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions and policies.”
Referred to as "guerilla urbanism", "popup" urbanism" "city repair" or " Do it yourself – DIY-urbanism". We can define tactical urbanism as the use of simple or temporary revisions to realize long term changes.
- Mike Lydon and Anthony Garcia
ENVISIONING “
To Promote Tactical Intervention in neighborhoods and local communities where anyone can propose to organize DIY (Do It Yourself) events to enhance livability of urban spaces in our cities.

IDENTIFICATION OF SITE LOCATION •
Karur Bypass Road from Salai Road Junction (Kohinoor theatre) to Tiruchi-Karur Highway junction, has emerged as an arterial stretch in recent years.
•
It is one of the most heavily congested stretch.
•
It has become a commercial nerve centre as a clutch of retail showrooms, hotels and eateries have come up on the road.
•
The road is now an important entry route for vehicles coming from northern and western districts of the State.

ESTABLISHING BASELINE DATA; PRE-INTERVENTION STUDIES Location of Bus Shelters
Parking and Vendor Sitting Location
Location of Vendors
• During peak hours Bus shelters result in over spilling of passengers on road thus affecting the effective carriageway
• Two wheelers constituted most of parked vehicles. • Vendors flock to pedestrian hotspots and are therefore a sign of a walkable neighborhood and resulting in encroachments.
ESTABLISHING BASELINE DATA; PRE-INTERVENTION STUDIES Location of Trees
Location of Utilities
Signal Transformer Electric poles Street light
• While there are no trees within the street right of way, several mature trees exist along the edge of commercial buildings which provides respite from heat to the pedestrians.

• People visiting the road are of diverse age group, gender etc. hence it calls for diverse programming on the street.
• Very high volume of traffic during peak hours
R
• Not much speed control measures.
• Existing conditions are suitable for Non motorized Transportation infrastructure which can be included with minimal intervention.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Section AA’ (All Dimensions in Meter) • In the new design, • existing median alignment is retained • effective carriageway of two lanes each side is maintained.
• The space left between the carriageway and footpath has been further analyzed based on the adjoining land-use to determine the quality of pedestrian environment on the road. • For example, addition of cycle lanes, place making zones, parallel car parking's wherever necessary. • Towards the street frontage, a clear walking zone has been identified to increase walkability and eliminate pedestrian-vehicular conflicts on the street. To facilitate this, shifting of certain parking's especially 2 wheelers is recommended.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Section BB’ • Heading towards the bridge, the bridge involves redistribution of carriageway. Having lesser width of right of way the new design involves • Including cycle way in both directions • And the other side involves the clear walking zone connecting to bus shelter ahead.

• In order to provide respite from scorching sun on the wide footpaths, addition of painted gunny bags have been used to provide shading as an alternate and immediate solution till the trees grow to full heights when planted. The coloring has been done to make the element exciting and attractive.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Intersection 1; Ending of Bridge
Explanation of one of the Intersections • The intersections have been re distributed and spaces have been reclaimed for the pedestrian. • Pedestrian crossings have been given at each intersections for easy movement of people on foot. • The reclaimed spaces have been painted using triangular patterns and bold colors to make it look attractive and noticeable by vehicles. • On the starting and ending of the bridge a circular pattern of colorful graphics have been used as a traffic calming measure to maintain speed on road Bus Shelter Pedestrian Crossing: Zebra Crossing Reclamation of pedestrian Space; Creation of Bulb outs using geometric shapes that can be painted in short time during tactical urbanism event

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Intersection 4; Starting of Karur Bypass Road
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT • The proposal uses various kinds of patterns on footpath, junctions, pedestrian crossings and shadings with gunny bags with the help of paints. The main purpose of this is to attract pedestrians to use the asserted crossing and footpath to ensure safety and promote a lively ambience.
